Don't have internet, intentionally didn't pay it to detox from the online world. I'll be writing reviews on my phone until I pay it, or someone in the house becomes impatient and pays it, we will see what happens. I read this over 6 different times, sometimes the break was 15 or 30 minutes. I just kept getting sleepy, like this was the best bedtime story in the world lol I believe Peter Snejberg's art was the worst out of the entire event. I am not sure though if the problem was time and mismanagement of talents. Since this is a 60 pages story. There is many writers for this one but you won't even feel it. This is one of the best fantasy stories I ever read period. It's criminal that this isn't available in TPB. Annual events are always hard to read because it's double or even triple the pages of the monthly issues. And most of the time they aren't even this good, this event is the exception to the rule, and what a fabulous exception it was. Maxine stayed behind in free country. The bad guys plan was foiled. The children were saved. It was adorable how suzy claimed Tim as her boyfriend and him objecting over and over, sadly they will never meet again (Not to my knowledge anyway) The two deceased detectives didn't get their 10 pound reward for a job well done, sadly. Fresh Note now that I am copying this review over here : Isn't it awesome that such a rare event like this has 66 ratings on goodreads?!
Timothy Hunter "Bet this sort of thing never happens to John Constantine.."
This states it is the second part of The Children's crusade, and should be read as the last of the sequence otherwise if this is read right after The Children's Crusade #1 (of 2), the entire middle section is missing and it makes no sense. As I couldn't find the individual issues I had to settle with reading A Tale of The Children's Crusade: Free Country to get the background so this part would make sense.
The best part about this is it is a a multi comic crossover event involving characters from many other comics, namely the Dead Boy Detectives from Season of Mists, Tim Hunter from The Books of Magic, Suzy from Black Orchid and Maxine, the animal god, who has interesting conversations with animals.
Maxine, the Animal God "Would you eat ME?" Cheetan "No." Tiger "Yes." Wolf "Maybe"
The writing is great, the art is just slightly above average. All the threads tie together at the end.
This finale to the Children's Crusade is a bit of a let-down. The biggest problem is that it's all over the place. The first issue was a nice tale of the Dead Boy Detectives, but this one instead is largely about Tim Hunter. There's still some humor in, and some of the mysteries of the first issue are nicely resolved in this one. But it really loses its focus and tells a sloppy story.
