Hot Rods #6

Barracuda's Heart

Rate this book

Some hearts can be repaired. Others should just be totaled.

Hot Rods, Book 6

Carver always thought he could sense when Roman was on the verge of falling into his inner darkness. But this time, Carver misses those cues—and leads the police on a high-speed race to the ER, praying his Barracuda won’t die on the way.

When Roman awakens from the haze of painkillers and alcohol, he already knows the question poised on Carver’s lips. Was it an accident—or did he deliberately dance on the edge of death? How can he tell Meep that lust and laughter are no longer enough to help him cope with the rapid changes among the Hot Rods?

Part of him is happy for them. The other part is pissed. Because what he’s always wanted is Carver all to himself. Much as he loves his brother mechanics, sharing isn’t his strong suit.

Roman needs time—and distance—to get his head on straight. The only question is, when Roman comes home from rehab, will Carver still love the man he has become—or will their roads have diverged too far to cross each other again?

Contains full-throttle emotion, pedal-to-the-metal sex, and an answer to the age-old question—can there ever be too many mechanics under the hood? During one of life’s speedbumps, there’s a brief, non-explicit depiction of self-harm. But don’t worry—all drivers make it to the finish line in the end.

I have not a clue why I've not read anything by this author before nor why I started with a book 6 in a series. Oh wait, the cover played heavily in that second decision as did the blurb. I'm weak willed. What can I say?

This in all likelihood will be the beginning of a binge of this author's work. Despite its being a sixth in the series I was able to keep up and didn't feel too in the dark, though my curiosity is definitely piqued especially the hot rod couple that's two dudes and a chic what are married. Fuck yeah, homes. Cupcake will be reading that in the not too distant future.

Rylon definitely is experienced in brining the smut and the power dynamics between Carver and Roman were off the charts.

"Yeah, well… I dare you to drop the soap." Roman groaned as his cock inflated. Would the damn thing always react this way to Carver? He hoped so, even if they fucked themselves to death.

Meep smiled then squeezed his hand until the soap popped free and clattered to the ground. "Oops. Guess I'd better pick that up."

Perfect gif is perfect.

This story has meat on its bones I just thought the meat was handled in a trite and too neatly tied up bow for me to swallow, thus the 3 stars. The fact that Roman overdosed and went to rehab and was trying to maintain sobriety and had a horribly abusive childhood to face/overcome and finds he has a brother who's suffering a worse fate and has to rescue him and has to deal with all his psychological fall out seemed like overkill to me. But I'm glad the hot rods were there to save the day. And I will be backtracking to catch up with this series as well as the Powertools series of which this is a spin off. Yes indeedy.

I have been seriously looking forward to reading Barracuda's Heart since I finished reading Swinger Style back in July. I LOVE Roman and Carver together and I couldn't wait to have a whole book dedicated to them. As in the previous books, I hate the constant switching back and forth between the character's given names and their nicknames. I swear, I cannot keep them straight without a road map. That alone will keep me from giving any book in this series a full five stars, no matter how good the story is. Ok, that said...

Roman is one messed up guy. He comes from an incredibly abusive home and even though he has been with the other Hot Rods since he was around 15, he is still pretty broken. His coping mechanisms stopped working and he attempted suicide. And thank goodness, that very act prompted him to get some real help and get healthy so he can be worthy of Carver.

Carver has issues of his own, though. He really really really needs to be needed and he needs the sexual outlet that Roman gives him. Roman is a very dominant man and Carver loves nothing more than submitting to him. Hot.

Roman is also very possessive and doesn't really like sharing Carver. He likes some aspects of the Hot Rods sexual antics, but he really wants Carver for himself alone. Between that and him feeling like his dominance is unhealthy, he's got some stuff to work out.

While I think that Roman's recovery happened way too easily, I don't want or expect this series to go that deep into the realities of substance abuse and addiction. I am happy with the, more or less, glossing over it all. The one area that actually got this book 4 stars instead of 4.5 was

So, though I enjoyed this installment quite a lot, I do feel that Swinger Style was better. Still, definitely worth the read if you are a fan of this series.

Carver was so lost without him.

Then when Roman got out of rehab he wanted to confront his demon's meaning his child abusing bitch of a mom. He ends up finding out he has a brother that she beat and kept locked up in the attic and crawl space. Before he can save his brother the crazy bitch pulls out a gun..
By the time they can get the cops there she has hidden his brother.

When they sneak on the property to save him she had already beat the shit out of the little boy.
I absolutely love this story. Jayne Rylon is one awesome ass author. And Omg when Roman dominates Carver sexually it's hot and sexy as hell.

5 STARS

I was really looking forward to Barracuda and Carver’s story. Cuda has been an enigma from the beginning of the books and I really wanted to get to the reason. Yes, they all have their own problems and come from pasts that most of us wouldn’t survive but, Cuda always came across as angry and hurt. What was in his past that made him this way?
What a surprise Barracuda’s Heart was. Not only do we find out about his history but there’s a big twist in the storyline that had me reeling! Written with class and empathy, Jayne Rylon tackled a very sensitive subject with care and compassion. As Barracuda faces his past and looks to his future with Carver by his side, he opens another chapter to himself that will prove that he is a man capable and worthy of loving.
I can say, for me, this was a very intense book. Ms. Rylon took on drug addiction, alcoholism, child abuse, self-mutilation …. wow! She floored me with how well the subjects were all dealt with and showed me that a little tough love, a lot of compassion and a whole lot of loving (god, I love the group scenes) can go a long way into repairing the damages of the past and make you look forward to the future.
On the lighter side, we were introduced to new characters that are going to make this series even more interesting. She has me wondering just how much the Hot Rods and the Powertools are going to really interact. And, no matter how hard I tried, I kept singing Heart’s “Barracuda” whenever I opened my Kindle to read this story … I was really annoying myself! But, take the time and enjoy the next installment of Hot Rods. Jayne Rylon brought new light to some very hard subjects and wrote about them with the style and flare that only a good, conscientious author could achieve.

My Review:
This may be book #6 in this series, but this is the first that I've read from it. While the book worked as a stand-alone, I don't think I'd recommend it. This series features a huge cast of characters and all of them have a real name and a nickname which were both used throughout the story. As a result, when the story was in a group setting, I never knew who they were talking about. It was very confusing.

What did work for me in the story though was the relationship between Carver and Roman. These are two very angst-y characters and I loved the passion and emotion between them. The story begins with Carver rushing Roman to the ER after he's completely hit rock bottom. The rest of the story is about their recovery apart and together and finding their way back to stable ground. I love a good angsty read so this one worked really well for me in that regard.

I liked these two guys. They're very open with one another where it comes to their emotions between them. It's all the other stuff that is harder for them...but they are both very aware that things have to change for both their mental well-being. And after the trauma of the past few months, they are both on really shaky ground...trying to be strong for one another, but dealing with some incredibly hard emotional turmoil at the same time. Because they were so dedicated to each other it was easy to fall in love with their characters and really want everything to work out for them.

And while the majority of the book did work for me...I wasn't real sure about some of the final scenes. I think the issues with Quinn were resolved entirely too easily...even in a fictional world. I can suspend disbelief to a certain extent...but there were just too many obstacles happening there for it all to be tied up in a neat little bow at the end. And then the final group scene...maybe because I haven't read the whole series to understand the group dynamic...but I just didn't get the point of why EVERYONE had to be involved...*shrugs shoulders*. It didn't bother me...I just didn't see the need for it to that extreme.

Barracuda's Heart, Jayne Rylon
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: GLBT, romance, contemporary

Book six in the series, and although I hadn’t read earlier ones its clear that each book is complete, and about some of the same group of people that make up Hot Rods. I’ve had no problems with this in other series so I was really looking forward to this, but it just didn’t work for me for a couple of main reasons. That's just a taste issue and no reflection of book quality – what doesn’t work for me could be just what you want in a novel.
I had issues with the endless swapping back and forth of names. Each character has a real name and a nickname, and there’s no consistent use of either, then throw in that Roman is Barracuda and is also called Cuda and ....you can see where it gets a bit confusing. I could get round that though, but my main issue was that I just didn’t feel the tenderness and emotion I look for in a M/M romance. I can get with three – even sometimes four – people involved in sexual encounters, and still feel the emotion and romance but this just falls into what seems to be a group orgy, and though I think its meant to show how much they all feel for each other I just couldn’t get with it. I was a bit like Barracuda, and couldn’t see the need. He got past it by putting restrictions that allowed Meep to still get what he seemed to need, but kept parts of him for Barracuda only. I accept this scene works for some people – lots in fact by the reviews but for me I need more one on one tenderness and more story. There seemed to be a greater emphasis on sex here rather than story – there was one but its very thin IMO.
If you want hot, steamy sex with multiple partners and aren’t so bothered about solid story this could be what you’re looking for. Unfortunately I need more story.

Stars: Two – sadly this wasn’t one for me, but clearly its loved by others. That's the way it goes.

I held off on reading this one for a while, because I was absolutely bawling my eyes out at the end of Swinger Style (Hot Rods, #5) by Jayne Rylon .

I wasn't sure if I could handle the emotions today, but decided it has been far too long since I read one of Jayne's books.

I really enjoyed it.
Read it in one sitting (since I was home sick in bed). Part of me totally understands where Roman is coming from in not wanting to share Carver at all, but then part of me feels like it will eventually hurt the group dynamic (even though they have a fix for that right now).

I really did enjoy it though. And I am so glad that everyone is able to deal with their own demons in their own way, and everyone is there for each other.

The addition of Quinn was interesting.

I look forward to reading the next one!

★★★☆☆
I've read 1-3 of this series, skipped 4-5 (takes a lot for me to want to read m/f anymore, even though there is m/m thrown in this series) and figured I'd just read this one since it's m/m. So, little confusing for the snippets about couple 4-5 but doesn't really detract from this story.

This was ok - really couldn't get a sense of why his mother did what she did but he was there to save the day for his brother he knew nothing about. Typical suspension of belief that everyone sexes everyone else up that's evident in this series and the Powertools series that this was kicked off from.

I love the HotRods and I'd been wondering between them and the PowerTools gang when someone would be too possessive for the group thing to work....leave it to men to be the ones to have a problem LOL. That said this story was heart wrenching and intense, and while I know there are some people who aren't into the M/M scenes, there is a whole lot more to this story and well worth the read!

A dang good book

This book might touch some people in the wrong way. It has a deep layer going thru it that deals with child abuse, drinking, and self harm. But once you get past that you really see how a person or group of people can not only accept these issues but beat them.
I myself have been sober for 19 years. It's a constant struggle and I am happy to report that the author has written a true accounting of just how hard it is to not only get sober but to stay that way. In my opinion this book does an excellent job of showing people how triggers can and do effect an addict. So I hope you get as much good from this book along with all the extra hot steamy moments.
Happy reading

dirty dirty dirty

I liked these characters and their different natures a lot. So many individuals that make a perfect working family circle. Some families are chosen and some we are born into and even when life is at its darkest it can be the smallest things that make a difference - and that comes across in this book well. There's a lot of sex and it gets real dirty at times and if you like that in a book you should definitely give this a try. I've read this before but its been so long i didn't remember much but still liked it!

Oh my this was one heart-wrenching love story

Roman and Carver's love story has peeked my interest throughout the previous 5 books in the series. But actually reading it was, Wow! These two had so much baggage and the things they survived. It is a powerful love story. Definitely a good read.

Great Read

Roman and Craver are hot hot hot - even with problems they have they still love one another, but will they survive the feelings of unease when Roman gets out of rehab. And what about finding his brother Quinn living with his crazy mom.

Ahhhhh! I knew it would be good but it was above and beyond freakin' amazing!!!!

Okay, I am a little bit more settled down now, but not much. I have been waiting for this book for what seems like forever, but really, it was only a couple months. It was one of those rare, and they are rare, occasions, where I stayed up until 1 AM, my time, to go and buy, download and read the book. While the authour is always amazing, sometimes you are too worked up and the expectations too high - definitely not the case here

So we start the book with a race to the emergency room, Carver/Meep is driving for all he is worth with Kaige/Nova who has Roman/Cuda/Barracuda who has OD'd. Yes, all the Hot Rods have two names, one real and one for their nickname. Roman is lucky enough to have his nickname shortened. While it took a bit once upon a time, these characters are family now, so I can easily move between all the names and still follow along. If you haven't read the preceding books, you don't need to, but, I love the series and highly recommend it

We then have the heartbreaking story of these two coming to terms what has happened, what is needed to get Roman better, time apart, and accepting who he is and what they have. This works out all fine and dandy, then, there is the problem that Carver has issues of his own. While all the focus was on Roman, his troubles bubbled to the surface. Things get worked out, but wow, it was a wild ride!

The emotions are very raw here, have your tissues close. Whether good, bad, sad or sweet, everything seems amplified and heart wrenching. There is no glossing over what these characters have gone through, or what they are going through right now, it is out there to be explored. That isn't saying it is over the top, it is simply is intense

And the sex, whoa baby, there is a lot and it is crazy wild!! Unlike a lot of the other books, there isn't a lot of group activity, but almost exclusively focused on Carver and Roman. Now, it is a Hot Rods book, so there are a couple of scenes, one being ridiculously sweet while hot and the other is downright raunchy, and perfect in that aspect!!!

All in all, I don't normally read M/M, and my first was the first Hot Rods, but these characters are so well written, and so darn compelling, you forget their sex. The emotional connections, the perseverance and the raw truth of their feelings make everything else seem secondary. It is hot, it is sexy and it is amazing!

I love this series, and after the ending of the last book, I was on pins and needles to read Roman's story! This was an excellent read. Jayne makes her characters so real you forget they aren't. And Roman is the most mysterious of all the Hot Rods. This was a fantastic read, and I think this is one of the best of the series.
Roman was rushed to the hospital after overdosing on oxy and booze. Carver was beside himself with grief because he loves Roman more than anything. When Roman comes to, they talk and Roman decides to go to a rehab facility for six weeks. He needs to face his addictions and his demons, and he needs to do it alone. Carver needs Roman to need him, and with him gone, Carver does not do so well. They love each other, but their worlds have changed, and the two of them have some serious issues to work out. Roman thinks he is doing the right things with Carver now that he is not so damaged, but he is missing the boat not seeing what it is that Carver needs. And now that Roman is a whole new version of himself, how will all of them fit in the picture? And the story takes an incredible journey when Roman goes in search of the mother that nearly destroyed him. He was never prepared for what he would find. But the Hot Rods do what they do best, an some amazing things come out of Roman's journey through his own Hell. This series is off the charts good! And it would not be the Hot Rods if it wasn't sexy as all get out. This book in the series takes the crew to a whole new level and should not be missed!

Wonderful, Loving, Menage Story!

Can't believe it took me so long to read this. Bad, bad girl! i just love this Series & of course the Powertools Series too!! The love & friendship the men & women show each other is phenomenal! If One man & One woman, or Two men, or Two women could show that much to each other the World would so be a better place! Just imagine if we showed each & every person how much we loved them.

i identify with quite a few parts of Cuda & Meep's life. Addiction, abuse, selling sex, the need & desire to be loved are all parts of my past. i'm always grateful when i see examples of others working thru it all! Even if it's a fantasy story. :-D Some need to see that recovery is possible from somewhere, right? So Jayne Thank You! :-)

Enough of the Serious stuff. The sex scenes were, as usual, some of the hottest scenes i've read!! These guys know how to love! i stumbled upon Kate's Crew by pure luck. Every time i read another from the Series, i'm happy all over again!

Wow that's a lot of Exclamation Points, huh? Heck i'm not an Author, i have to get my point across somehow Right? LOL i don't think you'll regret reading this, especially if you've been reading the Series. If you haven't been, please go to the beginning either with Kate's Crew, start of the Powertools, or at least King Cobra, start of the Hot Rods Series.

Enjoy!!

Barracuda's Heart was totally amazing and Jayne Rylon once again proved why she is a must-read author for me. I have been waiting for Roman's story since the very beginning of the Hot Rod series and it truly was well worth the wait. The storytelling was gripping, powerful and full of raw emotions that really touched something deep inside of me. I could feel the pain Carver was experiencing as he rushed Roman to the hospital after an overdose, not knowing if he would live or die. I liked that Roman took responsibility for his own action and wanted to enter rehab on his own to battle his addictions and demons. The dynamics of their relationship changed and now they must figure it out before it's too late. Roman no longer wants to share Carver with the rest of the Hot Rods and even though Carver loves Roman, he's feeling unfulfilled in his needs. I love these two together so much and the dominant/submissive role they play when they have sex is scorching hot, hot, hot. This has been my favorite story of the series so far and I have loved all of them. The author introduced a new character that I really enjoyed and hope to see more of him in future books. I cannot wait for what the author has in store for us next.

Finally!

I have loved the Hot Rods series long and hard, how could you not? Barracuda's and Meep's story has been a long time coming but was so worth the wait. All of the Hot Rods have troubled pasts but Roman's haunts him in everything he does. Will he ever be enough? And the age old question drives him crazy, can I be enough for the person I love? Roman spirals out of control and does the unthinkable. He finally takes steps to make things right with his life while he still has one but is it too late? Carver can't function without his other half. He has his gang but it's not the same. Will his true love come back to him and can they move on? They are thrown some serious twists while seeing if they can rebuild and no one knows if it will make them stronger or finally pull them apart. Will a whole lot of Hot Rod love pull them through this time? Jayne gives us a lot of love, a lot of heat, and a ton of Hot Rod action in Barracuda's Heart. No one can write ménage like she can so if you can't handle more loving than anyone could want stay out of kitchen, or living room, or garage. You get the idea. This book tore at my heart and then built it back together again in pure Hot Rod fashion. Can't beat this series! Don't miss it!

Barracuda's Heart is the sixth in the Hot Rods series by Jayne Rylon. The Hot Rods are a spinoff of the kinky Powertools series. Jayne Rylons kinky men and women will have you cocking your head side to side saying can they really do that? The author informs me that if it is in her books it can be done.
Barracuda's Heart is not the kinkiest entry into this series but it may be the one to bring you to tears. I know I welled up. At the end of Swinger Style (Hot Rods #5) we are left waiting to see if Roman survives his overdose. Barracuda's Heart starts right where Swinger Style left off so you might want to read it first. This is a case of friends to lovers to more with a lack of communication thrown in for good measure. Like any Jayne Rylon book there is a great deal of hot lovin’ surrounded by a terrific story. Carver (Meep) and Roman(‘Cuda)s story is hot and sweet and will make you laugh, cry and sigh. My only problem with this series continues to be the way she switches back and forth between nicknames and real names. The cast of characters is large enough without doubling it.

I have been a fan of Jayne Rylon since I read my first Compass Book and have been a major fan of the Hot Rod Series. Barracuda by far is my favorite of all the Hot Rod book.

This story is about the Hot Rod Mechanic Roman or commonly known as Cuda for the Barracuda car he drives. This like all her other books is filled with hot exciting sex seen which I know we all love and enjoy and is never ever a disappointment.

What I love beside the hot sex scenes is how she tells this delicate story about friendship and love between Roman and Carter and the other Hot Rods as well as dealing with abuse and addiction and through hard work and support anyone can over come a bad situation regardless of how horrific it may be. The way these group of mitfits fit together so well and are there for them through thick and thin and how even though you may not agree all the time with somethi g the love is still there.

This is an amazing story that you will not be disappointed in. I am not a fan of spoilers so your just going to have to trust me and read it for yourself. Another beautifully written and amazing story. Cam wait for the next book to be released.

I love a good romance. I think this is my favorite book in the series so far. The previous ones for me concentrated more in the group sex than in the individual couple. Don`t get me wrong, I like that each person in the group complements the others, but I still would have liked more one on one from that books couple.

In this book we finally get Roman`s story. It was really sad what he went trough but I`m very proud that he got over it. If not for himself in the beginning then for Carver. Poor guy can`t take a break. But thankfully his brother didn`t have to suffer anymore.

As for Meep, I felt like smacking him upside the head. When you are in a D/s relationship communication is essential, more so when the needs of one of the individuals are not been met. Carver should have told Barracuda that he needed something more with their sex. Something stronger. That he was feeling the darkness encroaching him.

I can`t wait for Amber`s book. I hope is something more like this one as Amber is not in the "in" with the gang.
