You won't find many biographies of this Separatist leader. This one is thoroughly researched and probably has every last important detail about him. Unfortunately, there are no portraits of Elder William and his descendants would very much like to know what he looked like. However, for a character portrait, this book does a very good job. It will leave you impressed with his morality and sheer courage, as well as his intelligence. It's exciting to learn what a key role he played in this part of American history. Highly recommended.

As a direct descendant of William Brewster, I have always been amazed and inspired by the life he lived-one that is truly worthy of being written about. From attending Cambridge and working for Queen Elizabeth to becoming the Pastor of the Mayflower and speaking the First Thanksgiving prayer, his life is nothing short of legendary. I learned a ton of new information about William Brewster, but overall, I thought this book could have been better written.

I am a descendant of William Brewster and we visited Plymouth this summer so it was nice to learn more about his life. However the writing quality is chronological and academic - so it doesn't bring to life the people in a compelling way, as a biography should.

I would rate the book a 5 for having gathered together the information about William Brewster and a 3 for the way the story is told. Very happy as a descendant to have this information to keep for the family.

My interest in reading this biography is because I am a descendant of William Brewster through two ancestral lines on my mother's side. He was an English official, Mayflower passenger, religious leader, and pilgrim colonist leader.
