Rayce

Rate this book
Rayce is one of four Matik Masters, a wolf destined to take the role of Pack Master once his father steps down from the throne, but a centuries old war with the Belarus pack has left Rayce cold, dominant, and wicked, love never an ultimate ending for him. In order to end the war, he is suddenly introduced to La’el, future Pack Master for the Belarus pack and…his intended mate.

La’el is uncertain of their destiny. Pure, innocent, and never once eager to find himself in bed with a male, La’el is suddenly thrust into a mated relationship with the harsh Rayce. He doesn’t foresee love or kindness coming from the male, but through the wicked, black stare of Rayce’s eyes, La’el sees something that even the dominant Pack Master does not: possible love.

The first moment they set eyes on each other, there is a spark of heat. But, when it becomes clear that, in order to save the werewolf packs, flesh must be shared, will La’el run and leave Rayce without a mate or will he stay and take a chance on a new beginning that he never expected he craved.

This wasn't bad, but when I was done I felt like I had read the first chapter or two of a longer story and I wanted to know where the rest of it was. Our two main characters have never met before. One is comfortable with same sex matings, one has never even thought of them. They are forced to mate to settle the fighting between their two clans. One is happy about it, one has no choice. They have a short conversation, go through the private mating rituals, have sex and the next day there are the beginnings of love. End of book. So they met in the afternoon/evening, forced to mate, have sex, sleep, and the next day are falling in love, end. No character development, unless you count them having sex and magically falling in love because the lovin' was so super-duper awesome as character development. I don't. I just wanted more. I wanted Rayce to learn not to be a dick and La'el to grow a pair and kick everyone's ass for forcing him to mate and not really having any sympathy for what he was going through, plus I just couldn't see how he was supposed to be a pack master when he was just so... not alpha. I wanted to see him show some strength of character and stick it in everyone's face that being a physical and emotional brute (like Rayce) didn't necessarily equate to power. Instead, he has sex and suddenly everything is fine. *frustration* Anyways, the idea was good and I don't remember having a problem with the writing, I just wanted the rest of the book and there isn't one. *huff*

Not many authors can write a very short novella and really make it a complete story, but new Author JC Wells has managed to in her book, Rayce.

In order to end the century long war, Rayce agrees to take a mate from rival clan. What he doesn’t expect is a young and innocent La’el. While it is commonplace within the Matik clan for same sex mates, the same isn’t true for the Belarus clan…So imagine La’el total shock when he agrees with the mating only to stop the needless blood shed but to discover he is to be mate to another male.

To La’el amazement, the moment these two men meet, the sparks start to fly. The heat just leaps off the pages as we followed the slow and sweet seduction of La’el by the very dominant Rayce.

I totally enjoyed watching the development between La’el and Rayce and look forward to continuing to see how the relationship unfolds between these two incredible hot men as the rest of the story unfolds in future books.

This is a very short novella and I mean very short. Although my first read by JC Wells I thought she did a good job getting the necessary information into this first book of this series.

To end the war between the Matik and Belarus packs the Pack Master of the Matik pack proposes a mating of the two packs. The Matik pack was known for same sex matings so it was no surprise when the Belarus Pack Master agreed and offered his heir, La’el as the mate to Rayce the upcoming Pack Master of the Matik pack.

La’el was not thrilled about this he was meant to be with women to have a wife and children not be mated to a male especially one that was as dominate and ruthless as Rayce was said to be.

Rayce could not have been more thrilled to have had La’el he was beautiful and submissive yet had a fire to him that excited him more than he had been in a long time he didn’t care if La’el liked it or not. If he refused then the war would continue and no one wanted that.
This was a fast coming together and mainly centered on the mating between Rayce and La’el. Rayce has hundreds of years of experience with males and La’el preferring women however didn’t take long for Rayce to convince La’el that it was okay to enjoy his mate’s body. It was hot, raw and passionate and written in great tingling detail!! Ms. Wells definitely knows how to write a m/m sex scene that you want to read over and over!

This was a joining of two packs for peace but for Rayce it was already much more. Hopefully in the future we can see how Rayce and La’el have developed because there is so much potential for them that just left you wanting more for their story.

This was a super short, but complete story. It was good, but I needed more. I feel like by the time it ended, it was just getting started. It was on the cusp of something that could be really great if Wells decided to expand on the story or create another work staring Rayce and La'el. I would love to see a real love develop between the two of them.

La'el reminded me more of an elf than a wolf and fit the typical characteristics of a uke to Rayce's seme. Their dynamic made me think of Okane ga Nai. While he is more submissive in nature, I wish he'd been treated more of an equal than a trophy wife (or a sex slave as we're told in the next book). He will at some point be a Pack Master to his old pack, so some take-charge attitude would be nice. And with his sex scene, I wish he'd fought Rayce a little instead of giving in so easily. Nothing wrong with making him work for it a bit.

I liked the change in shifter/werewolf lore. Usually two wolves see each other, are hit with some magical aroma and know they're each other's mate. In the book, it's much more like a regular wedding and wedding night albeit arranged. I'm still not sure when and where this takes place or how the wolves are self-sustaining, but that's not something terribly important to the plot (I'd still like to know though).

At the end of the day, this was a good piece. The sex was really hot and you got a sense of the characters even though it was so short. I hope we get more of Rayce and La'el in the future.

Rayce is the first book in the Matik Masters series by JC Wells and what a start it is! Rayce is the oldest of the Matik Masters and is the one who will step in when their father steps down. His father surprises him with news of his plan to have Rayce mate with the heir of the Belarus pack to bring peace. He is ready to argue until he sets eyes on the beautiful male La’el. Immediately, he knew this male was more than just a body to drive into, but his wolf’s intended mate. La’el has never had the desire to be with another male, so this plan is not to his liking but with the threat of war upon his pack he does what’s right. When they are thrown together, they are both shocked at the feelings and passion that comes quickly and gives them hope for a real future. The sex between Rayce and La’el is done perfectly. With it being La’el’s first time the author didn’t make it seem easy and wonderful. There was worry and some pain, but like any real loving partner, Rayce takes care to make sure La’el’s experience is mind blowing.
I am completely in awe of JC Wells’ Matik Masters already with this first book. I simply cannot believe that what I read was only 50 pages! The depth of the characters, the emotional connections, everything came about in a way that normally takes an author a full length novel to play out successfully. I cannot wait to read more about these Matik Masters! Three brothers to go and JC Wells can’t write them fast enough in my opinion.

A short read, we barely scratched the surface of possibilities with this first entry in the series. I feel like the author set the stage and then yelled ‘action’ and we get a bit of porn muzak, some ‘no, we can’t, I don’t like men’ bow chica dow-down and then…CUT. We get introduced to the couple, though barely, they get mated and then we get about 30 pages (of the 37) about sex. The ending felt a little abrupt, though we do get an ending, but there’s clearly more to this story-however we don’t get it in v. 2. This author hasn’t written much, but this series has potential. I hope she plans to continue in this ‘world’ but perhaps flesh out the story and characters more. Great chance for potential here. One thing I don’t think I even got clarification on-with some of the descriptions and expressions used-is this an alternate dimension? Is this ‘the humans don’t know we exist?’ Is this a long time ago or a current setting? Confused, but intrigued, I soldier on with the series…

A centuries old war between packs has taken a toll on both the Matik and the Belarus Packs. Merdain the Pack Master for the Matik Pack has a plan to end the war. Will Treg the Pack Master for the Belarus Pack agree to this plan? But more importantly will the next in line to be the Pack Masters of these Packs agree?

The dark and dominant Rayce is next in line to be Pack Master for the Matik Pack. La'el who is more innocence and light is next in line to be Pack Master for the Belarus Pack. With this plan announced it is not just their Packs future at stake. An arranged mating is the plan and surprise, it is theirs. Will they agree to this mating to stop a war? Black mail and seduction equals a steamy story. *fans self* Thank the gods they have siblings. We will hopefully get more of the Matik Masters.

A great short story, for a quick read. It has some really nice character exploration, good world building, and an overall plot, that make it a complete package. Told in 3rd person, dual POV, we get to see both sides of the story, and a hint of the other brothers who will appear later in the series.

If there's one thing I'd be picky about, it's that it feels like the beginning of a larger story. I'm hoping all the books in the series link in together, to provide that "bigger picture" that I'm looking for. But, for a short installment, it had everything I could hope for.

A bit too short (or it would have had a 4 star rating) - but a good exploration of the harsher dominant man who needs to figure out what to do now he has to woo a mate and get that mate on board with the idea of being with a guy. Looks like it is the start of a series - and would definitely read more. I am a fan of the big guy and the smaller guy visual and here it definitely is a wowza!

Nothing really new with werewolves here, but I still enjoyed it. unfortunately a very short read. (and kinda pricey for only 37 pages...) Basically ended just when it was getting going. Will try to next book since I liked this one.

This was a great story, but I though from the blurb that this was a full length novel, which it wasn't. I wish it was, as it had promise and I'd love to see it expanded.
