I am a big Frictional games fan, I finished Amnesia: Rebirth yesterday, loved it, and it motivated me to do another The Dark Descent run, since Rebirth is like a direct sequel.
I was remined of this short story bundle so read this before re-embarking on that journey.
I love short story collections and this one sets out to enrichen the Amnesia setting so I was looking forward to it.

I am kind of hesitant to call this a short story collection, rather it can be seen as a collection of five out-of-order chapter to an interluding story leading up to the events of The Dark Descent, spanning three centuries. There are many overlapping characters and events and we get to see characters from the games during what they were up to before.
Every short story is accompanied by a fantastically brooding and atmospheric illustration.
The writing is okay, good in places bland and with grammatical errors in others. I really liked the historical nature of it all highlighting important moments from the 16th , 18th and 19th centuries.
I’d love an Amnesia game set in older times exploring more of the origin of the Gate Builders’ influence in our world.

What really was valuable to me is the fact that a bunch of these characters and events alluded to get explored in Rebirth, adding that much more to the setting and its implications.
My favorite stories were Old Friends, With the Blessing of the King and Waiting for the Rain.

I really liked the experience and am looking forward to how Amnesia: The Bunker and future Frictional games will add to this universe.

A fun little diversion of light (light!) gothic horror. I kind of feel like I can't give it a proper review until I've played the full game (I'm only a couple hours in at present). I can certainly see how it contributes to the mood and backstory of the game already, even though I still have no idea what the game is about.

The writing is clearly written by someone who hasn't written anything before, at least that's how it seems to me. Only the story is interesting, and the fact that it's short, though mostly my love of amnesia let me actually continue and finish it. Good enough, but still really disappointing.

I'm guessing one should have played the game to fully understand the stories, but they're definitely not bad and incredibly interconnected.

Cute little collection of short stories that help the world-building.

To put it simply, if you played The Dark Descent, you enjoyed it and you'd like to get a little more, this set of stories are for you. All are more or less tied to different parts of the game storyline and I find myself very easily wanting to know more about the whole story, since it wasn't really developed to its full possible extend. The book don't explain everything. Although it gives you hints here and there.

The short stories by themselves are very good. They are written in a classic style and have elements of classic horror. I would call them Lovecraftian. They also fit very well into the story of the game, they are a great compliment.
