Rate this book
As if going off to college isn't hard enough, Rayne discovers she has other challenges beyond roommates or first-year workload.
She discovers the fate of the world resting on her small shoulders, not to mention the creepy whispers that taunt her in her sleep each night.
In the haze of her dreams she hears it, 'You're dead. You're dead and I just forgot to tell you.'
The sentence is alarming in itself.
Add to that, the voice whispering to her is her mother's and you have a real nightmare.

But what happens when the whispers in your sleep are warnings and the ghosts in the water are your friends?
What happens when the guy you fall for freshmen year is your family's oldest enemy?
What happens when the only sleep you get is when you lie with the dead, and the only way to save yourself is to murder your parents?

With the help of her new friends and old lovers, Rayne discovers her destiny has very little to do with midterms and more to do with the fate of humanity.

I loved the ideas presented in this book. Fresh and unique. However, it was all over the place. I had to read and re-read pages to understand the story. Characters appear out of nowhere. Settings change mid-sentence. The story almost reads as if it skips 100 pages, adds a paragraph, skips 100 more pages, etc. so so strange. I stopped at about 2/3 of the way through the book. It seriously gave me a headache. How on earth this was published as-is.....? I really wanted to like this, but couldn't battle the non-cohesive plot and editing.

“My” personal opinion Tara Brown is a breath of fresh air!

She created and twisted and put her own stamp on it!
I have read a lot of books. Seriously, I have never heard, read about or imagined the things that await you on the pages. Rayne, I am just going to say the name. My mouth hanging open, sitting here picking jaw off of the floor! Tara Brown penned us one of the most originals books ever! Every page she weaves and tangles just a bit more..
I loved every attribute of each one of these characters. I didn't know rather I wanted to be sucked dry by Constine or Burned to death by Wyatt.
Poor Rayne is thrown into a life she would of never dreamed to be in. She thought college was a tough decision. You have no idea! whew!! What do you do when you find out that you have been born before and Rayne is born for a purpose. it cannot be reincarnated to fall in love with her soul mate. NO way, nope Rayne has such a huge destiny, that will be hard to alter. Will she die trying? Well people I will tell you this much, she dies every time she sleeps! I was so enthralled with this book that I couldn't put it down. The characters are complex and rich with histories to learned. We meet Angels, Nixies, Van Helsings, Fae, Witches, and Lucifer. Each page just gives you more.
We have action, humor, love and mystery. You will slammed with questions that will get answered as the story goes along. It keeps you twisting and turning until the end... Next book? When? Date please, you will be in big trouble.. lol! I did find in a chapter or two that it seemed to jump in time, but it was minor and did not hinder the story. Great job Tara Brown! I am excited for everyone to enjoy this book, and add Tara Brown to your list of favorite Authors!!!

I have to be honest and say that I found this book slightly confusing to start off with! It wasn't that it was confusing but when the paranormal element started to come into it I found myself having to pay close attention to every little detail to actually be able to follow the plot and understand the paranormal element but apart from that this book had a lot of potential! Sometimes it also felt that the book switched scenes so suddenly that I actually had to go back and re-read the page before! I have to say though that I didn't lose my place in the book when I put it down! The plot was original with new paranormal aspects such as Van Helsing's being introduced and I really enjoyed it! I loved the characters as well! Rayne was such a strong character and she was really pushed to her limits in this book to basically survive! Mona and Michelle were so supportive of Rayne and they helped her so much throughout this book even though Michelle did betray Rayne at one point! There was a love triangle in this book between Rayne, Constantine and Wyatt! Constantine and Wyatt were so different to each other but they both wanted Rayne to be safe and protected! I thought that Wyatt was going to betray Rayne because of who his family are but I was genuinely surprised with what side he did pick! I wasn't really sure what to think about Constantine to be honest but I liked him but I have to say that I am Team Wyatt! The ending was such a cliff-hanger! I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series because of it! I also love the cover and I think that it represents the book well! Big thank you to Katy and Tara for having me on the Blog Tour!

First of all, I love the blurb. It had me intrigued right away and also thinking this book was going to be about something completely different. Boy, did Tara surprise me with a world that I wish I could live in! Mixed with demons, vampires, witches, and more...it was certainly my cup of tea! Rayne discovers who she really is not long after arriving at college. Amidst a cute boy who's fighting his instincts that want to kill her and an urge to do all the things she swore she wouldn't, she soon learns her purpose. And she learns that she's lived through this many times before. I liked Wyatt and Constantine and am not sure where my loyalties lie at this point, as I believe we don't know their true intentions yet. Rayne is an interesting character torn between the lives she lived before and the one she wants to live now. I couldn't put this book down and I am so excited to read the next one. Trust me, this is a must read!

The Good: A twist on some paranormal creatures and an interesting way they all fit together.

The Issue: There were a few times I was a little confused with Rayne's decisions (especially concerning Wyatt), but not enough to distract me from the story.

In summary. 4.5 stars. A great start to a series and an author I'm looking forward to reading more from.

Loved Rayne right off, she's blunt, can be rude but mainly she's blunt. "Innocent?" I laugh, "I'm not a nun. I'm just not a whore. I'm also not some bimbo who's going to be passed around by dirty frat boys. Look at you with your charming school boy looks and smooth moves. Please, like I'm going to have a drink with someone who has used his best moves on every other girl in the room. Yummy. Nothing like being last in the line up." First love interest (as well all know in Tara's books there's ALWAYS more then one) is Wyatt and when I found out his hot ass had tattoos that was seriously my undoing, I'm routing for him no matter what. "He is still in his boxers on the bed. I notice for the first time he has tattoos. A black band around his left bicep and a blade coming up the underside of his right arm..." Hot I know! Her second love interest is Constantine, still not sure how I feel about him yet. I know how I felt about that damn cliffhanger, the thing was BRUTAL!!!

I just read this book for the second time so I could have the series fresh in my mind for book 3's release, and hole..eee...chit! This book is so amazing! a whirlwind of "what the heck is happening" and "who can you possibly trust." I could not put it down or manage to achieve anything productive because I just couldn't stop! Tara Brown just has a magical way with her words and making you feel for and connect with her characters, and this book surely does that! With all the suspense and craziness that goes on, there is definitely no lack of comedy here, she always makes me laugh, even in the most inappropriate places! So much goodness!

Unnecessarily complicated. Lots of people knowing things and saying they don't want to tell main character til later. That gets old quick. And u just have to roll with the mixed mythology and religion stuff cause they don't really blend together cohesively. But the tv references and inner monologue'ing are worth the price of admission.

Good first book. Very little editing errors. I do kind of feel like we should have maybe seen a little bit of the wild side from Rayne when she was drinking, partying, etc. instead of skipping over it, but it was still a good book.

- Review taken from my YA book blog Little Paper Rose

'The Light of the World' had a very interesting storyline.

I didn't like the first chunk of the story and still feel that if it'd been cut out of the book entirely (in other words, if the beginning had been done differently), it wouldn't have made a difference nor affected the storyline or the characters. We meet Rayne when she's just started college and meets her roommate, Mona, old friend, Michelle, and an annoying flirt, Wyatt.

This will be the key group of characters throughout the story and I have to say; some I were okay with and some I just never liked.

Rayne was okay. She wasn't a stupid girl, she had some backbone. But again, the beginning of the book just put everything in a distasteful light. There were so many, unnecessary sexual references and odd, unrealistic situations.
Rayne gets sick and stays and sleeps at a total stranger's dorm for two days which her "friends" find to be completely fine since he says he'll take care of her. What.

From one chapter to the other, very early on, two months has passed and Rayne has gone from okay to several degrees below that - carelessly sleeping around and partying, basically having hit her head.
Sure, she suffered from major heartbreak from a guy she barely knew but could not live or breathe without (oh how this bugged me; but all would later be explained). Though, I don't see why it was necessary for her to go through such a drastic change in personality. I just couldn't help but like her much, much less.

There was so little for you to hold onto in Rayne that made you relate to her and really like her as a character. I would've wished for more of Rayne's emotional thoughts, something that'd make you feel with her and understand her.

Mona was the good friend and support throughout the story, but hers and Rayne's friendship didn't grow on me, nor did Mona. She didn't have much substance and didn't bring anything to the story. The upside was that, without Mona, Rayne would've been running around for the majority of the book on her own, which would've been lonely (and, perhaps, boring.)

Rayne is supposed to have known Michelle since before, but there's literally nothing that makes you believe that they have been friends earlier.
Michelle having originally been Michael was interesting, cool, something new. But holy [insert choice of word] did I feel like this character had dropped from another planet to be in 'The Light of the World.' So out of place, irrelevant, and melodramatic.
Rayne's vision of their friendship was quite sappy, with little explanation as to why she loved Michelle so much.

[SPOILER ALERT!] Even after Michelle had tortured her. With a sword. While she hung from the ceiling, arms dislocated. Yet again. Say what. And really, the whole thing about Michelle spontaneously deciding to stay at a church and become a nun (which we'll later learn did her absolutely no good. You'll see) was just, regretfully, comical. I was glad to get her out of the story for the moment. [SPOILERS ENDED.]

And Wyatt. This guy. Incredibly cocky and confident. I didn't like him and didn't want to like him, so it came as a shock that I ended up warming up to him (which I especially did when strange, uncanny Constantine came into the picture.)
What I didn't understand was the sudden "relationship" between Rayne and Wyatt. His kind was supposed to despise her but due to an unknown reason, he didn't. He just constantly wanted to make out, claiming he could never love something like her, but she knew he did. And she secretly loved him, too, when she wasn't hating on him. It was such a push-and-pull situation. Just... what is what, now?

She'd let Wyatt or Constantine be horrible to her and then call them up, laugh and joke, and claim to "need them."

This girl lacked some good sense.

[SPOILER ALERT!] While in a dead-serious situation, having kidnapped a priest and tied him up to get answers, she STILL had the time and sense to recall her and Constantine's sexual past, and try to seduce him in the room. Really, just really.

She risked her life returning to Wyatt's home where his whole family wanted to kill her and had attempted so, after learning that he was planning on killing her as well, just to get a peek of him. I mean, come on! And it all ended up with her fleeing for her life, as expected. [SPOILERS ENDED]

Also, there were multiple times that "he" and "him" were mentioned and you'd have no idea who Rayne was referring to until a page later. Sometimes it'd be Wyatt or Constantine or even her father or another random character; you had to guess back and forth. Is it Wyatt? I think so. No, wait. It could be Constantine. But I'm pretty sure it's Wyatt. Or Constantine. Oh, she's talking about her dad.

Throughout the entire story someone would be mentioned (Ellie this, Ellie that... who is that?) and things would happen without explanation until you, somewhere down the road, managed to connect the dots on your own.

And what was up with every single person cussing for no reason at all? "Shit" was said 57 times throughout the book, and "fuck" 32 times. I just had to look it up.

Yes. I had a lot of issues with the characters. I feel that they need a lot of work and love to be likable, strong characters.

The story was very fast-paced. Settings and situations would change abruptly. From one word to another, Rayne would be someplace else entirely and you wouldn't know if it was a dream or a new scene or if she'd plain out teleported. Sometimes it was hard to keep up and you'd find that the story was zooming in and out, flashing from left to right.

However, despite my rant (honestly, I had no idea how much I had to say about this book before I actually sat down and started writing this review). Believe it or not, I did enjoy 'The Light of the World.' It's an interesting, very intriguing storyline involving many supernatural elements - witches, vampires, faeries.

I didn't get invested or attached to the story, however, it kept my attention and had many unexpected turns. I really liked the idea of it (which my three points are for!) I think with adjustments and more work 'The Light of the World' could be really great.

The most important question to ask about this book is "did no one triple check this book for errors?".
There were so many errors that I couldn't enjoy the book. A pity because the story would have been interesting. I am a fan of urban and contemporary fantasy, but the writing here was just so insufferable. I don't even have words to describe. Spelling mistakes like loose instead of lose. The grammar makes most times and in the same paragraph, two different scenarios are mashed up. I am not even going to discuss the characters because then it would deserve a negative star rating and unfortunately for me, but fortunately for the author, such stars do not exist.
I had to give it a break to read another book because I just couldn't.
I was so excited to read this series but I think this is where it ends. And I am the type of book dragon that hates DNFng series, even if I hate that series, I make sure that I finish. But not this one. I don't think I have the patience to endure another disaster. Also I don't have time to waste. So yeah, one star for the fact that Tara Brown had the actual gall to put this book out there. She is brave.

Secrets And Lies

•••NOT for the homophobic, transphobic, closedminded or faint of heart!•••

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read "The Four Horsemen"!

Rayne has always been able to hear the dead. They whisper around her and create sparkles in the air. She has odd crazy dreams saying she was born dead and is still dead... That she dies every night. Her mother Willow has kept her vegan and doing yoga and tells her she can't have sex ever. She promises she will stick to these rules when she goes off to college. Can she survive in the real world? Why do her dreams tell her she is dead? Can she keep her promises? What will happen if she doesn't? Who is the guy she can't stop watching?

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy modern fantasy set in a world similar to ours but filled with supernatural creatures :)

The first Tara Brown series I ever read was Blood and Bone, and I became an instant fan! One thing with Tara Brown is that you will never know what kind of twisted, fantastical story she will pull together. I actually passed over this one several times because the description didn't sound interesting to me. But true to form, you can never anticipate what a Tara Brown novel is actually about and likely will end the book screaming WHAT JUST HAPPENED !?!? I love the ride! Now, she will also confuse the heck out of you and it may be necessary to reread entire chapters to wrap your mind around it, but it will all come together at some point... Anxious to dive into the second book right away!

4 Stars!

The Light of the World is a pretty good read. It’s about Rayne who just started college and some pretty strange things start happening. There were a few parts of this book I got frustrated with like how she would run away from Wyatt and Constantine because she doesn’t trust them but then go right back to them or call them for help. Some of it felt a little wishy washy. But I will continue reading the series and see how the second book is.

Great plot

I had a hard time following this story. Usually that doesn’t happen with me when it comes to this authors books. There was many times I thought I skipped a few pages or even a chapter. But, nope. It just jumps. Jumps hard. I’m hoping it isn’t like that in the next book because I absolutely love the plot. Getting a bit tired of the head games they all do and wish she’d stop it! Well , for all of them to stop it. Lol. Wanna scream “ TURN IT INTO A WHY CHOOSE!!” Ha.

This book was hard for me to put down every time I picked it up. I love the characters and the storyline is u like anything I have read before. Rayne is a character I very quickly took to heart. The way she grows through out the book amazes me. Her strength is unbreakable even when she thinks she's at her wits end. I love e that she's faithful to who she is, all aspects and all lifetimes.

I can't wait to see where her story takes us next.

what is going on….

This book started off pretty good. And then it got weird at about 20%. Rayne and Wyatt have know each other maybe a week. Rayne gets bitched slapped by Wyatt. Two months later Rayne has spiraled down a dark hole of booze and sex because she’s just so heartbroken. There wasn’t any true attraction for those five days. Why did she spiral so hard? I get what the author was trying to do but honestly it was just weird and poorly timed… it’s a no for me.

I honestly don't know how to rate this story...
The ideas and some of the things happening had me hooked and were awesome and interesting and new and something I'd never read before and I did enjoy the story and at times I liked the characters and the messages about transgender and being gay etc and that there is nothin wrong with being any of them from the book, I liked that but then sometimes I didn't, sometimes I wanted to put the book down and give up b I never did cause then it'd change and I'd like it again but the story to me was just all over the place like my thoughts are, I hated the characters at some points and the story, it felt like it would jump a chapter and I'd be left caught up wondering what the eff is going on and other times I had to re read pages because I was so bloody confused and didn't understand a damn thing!! This book had me all over the place. And I'm so confused with how I felt about it and whether or not I enjoyed it!! It could've been a really good book I just think it needed a little more time to be flushed out and re read and edited to make more sense, I mean some characters seamed to appear out of thin air and I just didn't get why they needed to be there or who they were especially with that Constantine guy like random much?!! He came out of know where at like 70% of the way through and it felt like we were supposed to already know him, like he should've been there throughout the whole story but he was just added in at the last minute like ohh this'll be good lets put him in here and throw the story for another loop, it felt too mismatched like things were just getting out in or hell even taken out and I'm here just like what the hell is this story and where is it going!!! It was like five story's meshed into one honestly. I'm just real confused and conflicted about this book honestly. It just had too much vampires, ghosts, Angels, fallen angels, lucifer, Lilith, witches, Van helsing, sin eaters and the list goes on and on!!!The writing was good in most places too but again in others it felt weird or was confusing............ But then again I finished it and I kind of actually enjoyed it sort of...

Eh... That was a bit painful to get through. It's shocking me to considering I've read other Tara Brown books and most have been decent, but this was dreadfully written. The only thing that kept me going was the plot. I found it unique and wanted to find out more. Otherwise, wow. That was a tough pill to swallow, but thankfully it was short. Don't think I'll be getting the second one.

I really want to love this

This story is fast paced. It was pretty hard to follow. There was a part where she was talking to Mona about willow, but than not long after worries she forgot her. Even though she just talked to her after some stuff went down. I’m going to read the next boo. I love the story line, characters, and want to know what happens.
