ZERO STARS. Ok . . . I read the new short story that Sjd Petersen posted on Dreamspinner Press -- the name of it is Riveted. First, I am astounded by any positive reviews that exist for this "story". I don't know this author -- I am not one of her friends -- so, I will not blow rainbows up your butt and say this story was good or commendable.
Let me warn any reader who may think to pick up this piece of crap -- this story is sick and deranged. Do not be taken in by any number of press releases that this book is about love, it's not. It's about someone getting their jollies by degrading and humiliating a person who is physically submissive. And, for those who recommended this story glowingly on Facebook (and you know who you are), you should be ashamed, really ashamed. I am disgusted by the contents of this story.
Let's start by saying that this story is 58 pages long, but, it reads like it is 500 pages long because it is like wading through a bog of crap. A book, no matter how short, can only be described as interminable when you really dislike the subject matter, the two main characters have virtually no chemistry (with the exception that one treats the other as a possession (i.e. dog)), and the author's writing lacks any sweet subtlety.
By the way, if you think the title "Riveted" is a play on words for "compelling" or something like that, you are completely wrong. To be Riveted is the act of having a dog collar permanently riveted to your body so you are no better than a stray dog that can be repeatedly abused. Fortunately, the meaning of riveted only came up at the end of the story because once I read the dog collar rivet section, I was on the verge of throwing my iPad through the wall when I learned what this author believes love means.
This is yet another of this author's attempts to show the whole dominant and submissive sub-culture of gay life. On a personal note, I do not understand in any way how being degraded by one's significant other in public or private is thought to be sexy, something to write about, or something to glorify. Obviously, this author believes otherwise since this is one of a continuing group of stories in which she highlights this sub-culture.
As I was reading this disaster, I originally thought that the only thing that was positive in this book is that the author had the good sense not to have the dominant partner publicly degrade his partner in some leather or S&M bar. But, then you hit chapter 4 and realize that this author simply does not know the bounds of good taste. (Oh, she didn't have the character publicly flogged, but is that something to be proud about? Really? Is that how we are judging the worthiness of literature these days?)
The author lets us know that it is ok to leave your lover in heavy bondage for an entire day to get him ready for public humiliation. Maybe we were supposed to be turned on when the dominant character wraps a piece of leather around his partner's sex organ and forces him to wear it under his pants until his penis turns purple and his scrotum is on the verge of permanent damage. Mutilation of a partner, hmmmmm . . . Doesn't that make this story sound sexy? Come on folks . . . Let's see this for what it really is.
I have read other work by this author - in "Lorcan's Desire", for example, I described this author as being scarred by her view of a purported loving relationship. Her emotional scarring again comes front and center in this "thing" that I just read.
This story is free on Dreamspinner Press, and that is too much to charge to waste my time. Someone send me a note when this author finally decides to move away from her fixation with dominance and degrading stories. (But is appears from a note at the end of the story that this author is going to write another dog collar, degrading story in her next book as well.)
Here's the question for you . . . What rating do you give to a story and a genre that you despise? To give it any stars would be to acknowledge that it as any merit. I simply see no merit in this presentation. Zero Stars again for this author.
