After a violent attack and a close brush with death, Chloe Adams awakens in a hospital with the terrifying ability to see the dead.
From the busy streets of London to the silent hallways of an abandoned New York asylum, she pursues the dangerous members of Abraham's Men, convinced that she must rally them to fight against the evil plans of the alchemists.
But somebody's been pursuing Chloe, and she's about to discover that in some fights, there are no good guys.
Kristen Selleck is avidly evil. Until recently, she worked as a mad scientist. After several diabolical attempts at world domination proved unsuccessful (most notably, building an army of robots from used pipettes, empty reagent boxes, and other things left lying around the lab), she decided to pick up the pen. She used the pen to poke an annoying lady at the gas station in the eyeball. Then she decided to write. She has been known to speak with a strong Russian accent. This is inexplicable due to the fact that she was born in Detroit. It has also been documented that she likes vodka, roller coasters, things which are purple, and blowing things up with dry ice. She abhors kittens, wood paneling popularized in the 1970's, and her arch-nemesis Jimmy (the Evil Overlord of Specimen Processing). She was last known to reside in Grand Rapids, and may be in the company of two tiny minions, and her devoted henchman, Shad. If seen, please contact the FBI immediately (she owes someone in Accounting a sandwich).
I skimmed this one as much the previous one although there were elements I enjoyed a bit more. {MUCH less Sam in this book—can’t really stand her don’t-expect-much-from-me-all-I-do-is-drink character.} The idea of seeing & interacting with ghosts is interesting but I’m not grabbed by the writing of these two books.
I will read the last one when in comes out next year, though.
I've been a big fan of this series since Chloe's horribly awkward first day at college. That girl has come a long way since she first walked through the doors of Kirkbride Hall with a head full of neurosis and the voices that tell her things she doesn't want to hear. She's found someone that she loves with all her heart. She's found a balance between the ghosts and real life.
And then she went to London. London, where BAD things happened to her. Bad things.
This is where I'm going to pause for a moment and say that no matter how nicely her mother coaches her reasoning about the things she's done to Chloe, she's wrong. Some bridges can't be rebuilt and when you continually lie to your daughter and put her in a mental institution KNOWING she's not crazy... well, there's no coming back from that. Not in my world.
So when Mommy Dearest shows up in Chloe's hour of need and drops a load of confessional information on her, I DON'T TRUST HER. I don't agree with her that Chloe's better off without Seth. In fact, I think it's the exact opposite. As dangerous as Chloe's quest for answers might be to Seth, they really are stronger together.
I appreciate that.
I also appreciate that we were given A LOT of answers to the questions that have been popping up as the series progresses. We find out some rather crucial information about both Abraham's Men and the Alchemists. I honestly don't know who to trust there. It's scary when you're not quite sure who the good guy is. SCARY! Meanwhile, things were hinted at (okay, more than hinted at, but I don't know how else to put it) with Chloe's friends that I think is going to have some big impact in the final book. THINGS ARE HAPPENING, PEOPLE. THINGS!
Bring on the finale. Chloe and her crew need to unravel the threads of information they've been given and figure out which way is up. I'm ready for it.
This might have been closer to a 3.5 for me. I enjoyed reading more about asylums, and why they were built like they were, and even learning more about the "bad ones" and Abraham's Men, but Chloe is really starting to get to me. Her naivete is starting to come off as stupid at times. I found myself wondering how she could be so stupid several times. I also need a little more development of the relationship between her and Seth. For the past two books I feel as if there as been more development between her and Willard, yet Seth is supposed to be her boyfriend, and they're supposed to be stronger together. Show that, don't just tell us that and then let it go. As another reviewer said, it's a bit bothersome how he calls her "kiddo." Almost makes the relationship come off more as brother and sister than boyfriend/girlfriend. In this book I did enjoy the fact that Sam was barely in it. I've hated her the last two books, and hopefully she'll show her worth in the fourth book if she's there. I also hope there's some development on Chloe's part that she'll start listening to Seth, and other people who really care about her, when they give her advice on who to listen to or not listen to.
OMG this book had me at the very first sentence. And to be honest I knew it would. This book is so well written and the author have thought of every detail.
Chloe has been through a lot during the series. She was released from a mental institution to attend collage as far from her family as she could get. There she meets seth and they fall in love. Chloe does what she can to hide her craziness and the fact that she hears voices no one else can hear. But as the story evolves he gets to know her secret and believes in her. They start to research a secret society called Abrahams men that are connected to the old asylums around the states. chloe is sure this has something to do with the voices she can hear. When we get as far as to the third book "The Kirkbride plan" the search has brought chloe to London and she has to face a lot of dangers and surprises.
This is a book that will capture you from the very first page and it will not let you go until you've read the very last word of the story and you wake up from the daze of being in the grip of Selleck's writing. I can't wait for the final book in the series.
What can I say about this amazing book? The story? Amazing! The writing? Amazing! The Characters? Amazing! I could go on in this fashion but I'm sure you're catching on to what I'm saying about this novel! This series has just the right mix of mystery, passion, friendships, a love story and ghosts. If you've not started from the beginning....please go back and start with book #1 because you're missing so much of the story and some really killer scary bits! I'm not going to get into my favorite pieces because I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, but in general terms this series grabbed me from the first page with the well thought out character. The adventures have me nail biting!! I just want to grab Seth and Chloe and plop them down at 'the end' because I love them so....and just want them to live happily ever after. Dr Willard? I'm not sure what to think about him and this whole Abhamson's Men vs The Alchemist?? Who's right and who's not?? Guess we have one more book to go. Kristen Selleck? You go girl! Never stop what you're doing cause you're doing a marvelous job!!!
Does it drive anyone else crazy that Seth calls Chloe "kiddo" all the time? How condescending. The asylum information in these books is fascinating, but the characters annoy me at times. Sam is a needy, destructive bitch, Chloe is a weak pushover, Willard was obvious and everyone saw it but Chloe. Mike is a child, and Debra is a piece of work. I think Seth is the only character I liked, and even he had me rolling my eyes at times. Granted, I did read the first three books in about 3 days, and I'm sure I'll read the 4th when it comes out, but I have a feeling that its going to be more silly Seth/Chloe stupidity based on the title...
Just as good as the first two! This series really grabs your attention, and won't let go. Total page-turner! I can't wait to read the 4th book, when it comes out in the next couple of months!
The biggest problem I have with this book, as I've said with the previous two, is that the editing sucks! I think it was even worse this time around. I really hope the author finds a new editor for the next installment.
This was supposed to be a book.... "A" as in singular book that I was going to read until the series I'm in released its new book. Here I am, book 3, heading straight on to 4. Guess I'm taking a mini break from my other series. :0) If you get a chance, read some of Kristen's old postings- they are hilariously good. Love some of her rants, got quite a few good laughs from them!
Things are heating up in this third book of the Birch Harbor series, as Chloe hits the streets in London. I read this book in one sitting. I had to! This was even more intense than the first two and I totally loved it. It just gets better and better. Highly recommend!
