Uden at menneskeliggøre dyrene lykkedes det ham at skrive moderne dyreromaner.

Svend Fleuron (1874-1966) was a Danish writer. He worked as a nature writer and above all as an animal writer. He wrote especially about animals living in the wild, which he was able to portray with great linguistic skill in their instinct-driven nature. Without humanising the animals, he succeeded in writing modern animal novels.

This is not a cute and fluffy book suitable for young children or the sentimental. It's more along the lines of "nature red in tooth and claw." It is a good book, however, and worth reading just for the descriptions of the Danish countryside, and of the cats themselves. The author must have been very observant.

First off, DO NOT read the foreword unless you like spoilers.

This is the story of a year in the life of Grey Puss, who lives on a Danish farm. When we first meet her, she is very pregnant and trotting off across the fields to find a safe place to have her kittens. She's determined that this litter of kittens will survive and in order for that to happen, she has to hide them very well, both from the humans who will drown unwanted kittens and other predators as well. And to keep them fed, she'll need to be a predator herself.
