My life has been a lie. I’m about to be eighteen, but my bithling blood could destroy the entire universe and the fate of all mankind.
...And he was off limits. He was beautiful. He was my stalker. He was my protector. He could have been my killer... and I could be his destroyer.
His world of Durt was adorned by alluring lavender moons, fascinating creatures, and had an undeniable Darkness... but still I wanted him. Would the cost be my life? And would it be worth it?
As a child, I was labeled as the kid with too much energy. Desperately, I did my best to conform to the ways of the world. Later, to realize I had to be myself. As a result, my imagination went wild.
These days,I funnel my energy, exuberance, and high-jinx into my debut series, The C. Walker Adventures, beginning with, The Curse of Yama. There’s no telling where my mind will take me–and you—next.
I live with my family in Mississippi, with my three dogs, five chickens, and pot belly pig.
I have to say at first thinking about reading a book called Dirt, wasn't appealing at first, however, straight from the start this book was amazing. K F Ridley started this book right from the beginning there was no boring easing you into the book mode, I loved every bit and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Dirt was full of action, passion, and FAIRY'S!! I have mentioned I LOVE Fairy's!! But let me tell you this is not your typical fairytale, its so much!! I was captivated by Dirt from the beginning!! I loves the imagination and thought that was put into this book, you don't see a lot of that anymore and that amazed me. I highly recommend Dirt to EVERYONE, and I so hope there will be a sequel, which with cliffhanger ending I am seriously betting there is one!!
Ashe was raised by her father, since her mother died after she was born. Her father is a bit strange and she has really taken care of herself. She really only has one friend, Taylie. Ashe doesn't date, her father's weird tactics are so extreme she wouldn't dare bring someone to the house to meet. She fears once they meet him they would reject her immediately.
Rowen shows up and Ashe's world is turned up side down, she is so drawn to him. So when he starts following her, she's a little bit scared but excited at the same time, I mean he's hot! Then strange things start happening to her, like the unexplained reaction she has toward her teacher.
Ashe soon finds herself in Durt with the fairy's. She is in for such a surprise not only does she learn that she is half human and half fairy, but her mother was royalty. Oh and evil is after only trying to kill her.
Ashe is now wishing she could go back to her normal boring life, where she doesnt have to worry about evil, forbidden love or fairy's. But then she wouldn't want to live life now that she has found out how love feels and now that she is responsible for humanity and the fairy's she doesn't know where her life stands.
I couldn’t carry on, I don’t leave many books unread, but I failed, I felt uncomfortable reading this novel. It felt like a cheap teenage magazine. That’s not my scene.
The characters were not well written and the short, cut sentences, meant there was no depth to the writing.
A simple lesson in show don’t tell, would improve this book.
Isn’t that an awesome cover? I shamelessly begged for an ARC of the upcoming novel, “Dirt,” by K. F Ridley. Shamelessly. I LOVE changelings. Seriously, one of my favorite children’s books (right after Ella Enchanted) is The Moorechild. I’m also a fan of Tithe, the Trylle series, and pretty much any other YA novel about changelings. They’re fascinating.
So without further ado, here’s the dirt on “Dirt”
I finished Dirt very fast. It was impossible not to, the book moved SO quickly that by the time I’d finished, I felt like I’d run…. well, I’d say a marathon, but I’ve never attempted that, I’m strictly a 5k kind of girl, but you get the idea.
The beginning was a bit slower, but that was good. I felt grounded in Ashe Leigh’s normal life. I was kind of surprised she was in college, because this is YA, and the school was in so little of the story it seemed to take more set up to establish it as a college than a high school, and the protagonist seemed much younger than a college student in terms of voice, but it wasn’t a bad surprise, it was a neutral one. It just threw me for a second. But in any case, I got a firm handle on Ashe Leigh, her friend, her family, and her fondness for art before the story went into hyper drive, which made me happy.
Once the action picked up, pretty much a scene or two before Ashe Leigh heads off to fairy land, also known as Durt, there wasn’t as much time for character development. The plot just had so much happening. It was exciting, and fun to read, but there were times when I wished it had slowed down just a little so I could really feel the impact of everything that was happening. There’s this big deal thing that happens to one of the characters, a tragic transformation I won’t go into by providing spoilers, and it should have been SO sad, but I couldn’t muster up the proper emotion because I met and lost that character in what felt like an eye blink. SO much happened in this book, and it was good stuff, great plot developments and twists, I just wanted more time to react and for the character to take more time to react.
But then again, pretty much every negative review of “Persephone” said I slowed it down too much in the middle, so wanting things to slow down is probably just personal preference, not a writing flaw (I hope). I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy when it comes out because I really am interested in the world Ridley has created here, and I love Ashe Leigh, and her best friend, and I want to get to know everyone else that much more. I just want to be clear that this isn’t a character development problem (it’s not a problem at all, it’s a preference). The characters are there. They are fully fleshed out and very clearly three dimensional. If they hadn’t been, I wouldn’t have cared one way or another how much time I got to know them. There’s a definite sense that the characters are there to get to know. It’s just that our main character doesn’t know them very well yet. This book takes place in less than a week (I think). The tragic thing with the character happened like the day after the protagonist met him. So the disconnect I felt, the sense of not knowing anyone other than the characters that were established in the very beginning, was very realistic. And I don’t think it’s a bad thing to put a book down and want more. That’s how sequels sell, right?
I wanted to like this book. I really did. I feel terrible giving it such a low rating but there were just too many things that pissed me off that I just couldn't give it a higher rating.
The Good: I liked the world of Durt that the author created. It was imaginative and I wanted to learn more about the different places and creatures that could be found there. The generally storyline was interesting. The whole thing with Ashe's blood and how basically every fae wants to kill her just because she was born was a good plot line and I was intrigued to find out why her blood was so special.
The Bad: Pretty much everything else :/ The characters I felt didn't show any development throughout the entire book. The romance was nauseating and that is saying something because I am a hopeless romantic. I just didn't get it. They knew each other for a week, barely spoke more than 5 words to each other and they're all of a sudden declaring their undying love for one another and how they would risk anything to be together. Like seriously?! I wanted to slap the two of them. You cannot feel that way about someone after a week!! Especially when this dude has been stalking you for god knows how long. The two of them pissed me off to no end! OK what else...the ending! Like how?! Ugh! There was also a lot of grammatical errors. I received an ARC copy so I don't know if these are in the final edition but some serious editing is needed. There are other things that pissed me off but I'll leave it at that or else I'll just keep going off on a rant for ages.
I really hate writing bad reviews and I'm really disappointed that I didn't like this book but that's just the way things go. I don't know if I'll read the next book when it comes out :/
I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I think I've read one fairy book aside from this and it was way different so I can't really compare it to any others. It kept me entertained, I enjoyed reading it, but it didn't have the IT factor I look for. There seems to be a lot of stories like it around right now with different paranormal creatures, but I'd probably read the rest in the series just to find out what happens.

Overall: Ridley's characters were well developed, the plot had unique twists and angles, and the language flowed smoothly. The few typos were not a distraction from the story and I truly admire how few of these there were (considering that this is a very small, independently owned publisher).
If you enjoyed entering the world of Oz, Wonderland, Hogwarts and Middle Earth, you will love this novel by K F Ridley! Not only do you travel to the world of Dirt but you also explore it with memorable characters.
The writing is very wooden and mechanical. Almost like reading a textbook or something. There weren't real emotions that came across. Sure the emotions were mentioned, but it wasn't really followed up with actions showing those emotions. Take this passage for example:
"We share a glance. I'm falling for him. I don't know what to do with my feelings."
That is it for the hot steamy romance that is Rowen and Ashe. At least in that part of the book. It doesn't really get better than that. See for me those sentences are like the entire book. Short, clipped, not really engaging me. There was nothing to follow showing me that she was indeed falling for him. Or struggling with her feelings. Only those few short sentences that are supposed to convince me of this. Expand this over the entire book, every scene and that is how it was for me.
About twenty percent of the way through you start to get answers for what is going on and man that was boring. That really read like a textbook. Put me right to sleep so I had to skim most of it. Thankfully, like everything in the book, it didn't last long.
The longer I read the book the more I found it annoying. Towards the end there are some big fight scenes, but even they were disappointing. I mean fighting the head bad guy should take more than a page. Freeing people who have been captured should also take more than walking into the dark Thorns place and taking them out. I mean there were barely conflicts. They took two seconds to resolve. There were no big climactic scenes to be like well at least there is this. Plus all of the twists at the very end made me roll my eyes so much. That and being reminded that Coll hates humans every two seconds...I was just like I got it! You don't think he likes humans, please stop reminding me every two seconds.
The writing style was just so odd I couldn't get into the story at all. I didn't care about any of the characters or anything that was happening. The book just was not engaging for me.
Dirt tells the story of Ashe Leigh Fair, who is plagued by an unknown illness that requires daily doses of medicine mixed by her Scientist father. She considers herself an ordinary wallflower with only one best friend, Taylie. Shortly after graduation she begins art classes at the local community college, and her life spins out of control. Ashe finds out that her long-dead mother is an Elven princess from a parallel world called Durt, her blood is special and an Adonis named Rowen is her protector. When she is attacked Rowen comes to her rescue transporting them both to Durt. She must fight for the man that she loves and against evil who would use her to control all the worlds.
I received the Advanced Reading Copy from Author K.F. Ridley. I wasn’t sure if I would like a book like this. I love fantasy but I am always weary of reading other Fantasy Authors. We all create such different worlds with common threads that bind us together. Sometimes those threads bind and strangle us. This is not the case with Dirt. K.F. creates a unique and wonderful world called Durt, where life is purer and more deadly. I loved how she weaved us into the story. We learned as Ashe learned. We felt it all through her. I can’t wait to read her next book and give this one 4.5 Flowers!
I was extremely lucky to receive an ARC of this wonderful book. It's presentation is beautiful. Ashe was raised by her father who is a little... lets just say essentric. Not quite the right word but close enough. He insists she is ill and makes her drink a glass of smelly yellow liquid everyday --I forgot to mention it tastes as bad as it smells-- calling it her medicine. Things start getting strange for Ashe first she notices a guy watching her between lessons. He's hot so she is in two minds about whether its a good thing or a creepy thing. Then she notices a car tailing her. She goes on to learn unbelievable things about her "illness" and creatures in the world that she always thought we're just in children's stories. Faeries. Her life gets turned upside down as the Faeries hunt her for her blood. Who will she turn to for help? is the hot guy after her blood too? Will she survive long enough to find love? You will have to read the book to find out.
The only words I can use to as an adequate description are PURE BRILLIANCE. I Love, Love, Loved it!
I bought Dirt after meeting and speaking to the author about it. I'll be honest, you never really know what to expect from independently published books, but I decided to give this one a try because the concept intrigued me. I was pleasantly surprised by Dirt! I frequently read YA Fantasy and many of the books run together because of their similarities. Dirt is a welcomed exception to the YA Fantasy norm. Ashe is a girl starting her first year of college and quickly learns that she is half human and half faery. The magical world her mother comes from, Durt, depends on Ashe to save them or else the hunt for her will destroy the world. The Durt world is quite different from the magic worlds I've previously read about. It is so different that I can easily separate it from other books. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes YA Fantasy and cannot wait for the next book in the series. Be honest, y'all know every YA book is a series these days. You had to have expected more :)
I've had this book for a while, and have been wanting to read it, just had ARC books to read and couldn't get to it, but yesterday I put everything aside and started. I read it within 24 hours and wasn't disappointed.
Ashe thinks she is a boring plain jane girl who does nothing for herself and takes care of her father. Strange things start to happen around her, strangers following her and teachers asking for odd requests. Her life is endangered and also of those around her. No one is safe. She has no clue what she is, what she can do and what her mother was and where she was from. Her world is about to change and I think by the end of the book, with the exception of the tragedy she faces she finally feels she's herself and has a real place in the world.
So excited about book 2, this is my first book by KF Ridley and I can't wait to read more!
Dirt has an awesome cover, a intriguing plot and an inviting premise. It lacks character development, any kind of emotional connections and the flow is off. I love fairy based storylines but I was completely unconnected. I'm just going to say this story is not for me.
I won a signed copy from K. F. Ridley in Sophie Davis's Fall in Love with Fabulous Giveaways. A new giveaway every day for the entire month of February 2013. Sophie Davis's Website.
I downloaded this book to my kindle for two reasons. First it was free. Second because it had an interesting premise. I liked the idea of the story it sounded fresh and unique. That is the only reason I gave two stars for my rating. The rest of the book was poorly written and had very choppy prose. I agree with another reviewers description. The writing was very mechanical and woody. There was no character development and even though there was a lead in to the next book I have absolutely no desire to read it.
I had mixed feelings about this book. I liked the characters, loved the world this author made up. I believe this book could have been bettered with more character dimensions. some of the characters seem very rigid and not put together all the way. There was also the dynamic between the two main characters that was a little hard to swallow. I mean a week seriously, and your so in love nothing else matters??? that was a little hard for me to work around. Overall, I would say a good short read.
I put this novel in the YA category as it fit the G rating. I skimmed the last quarter of the novel as I found the plot to be too simplistic and unbelievable and had by then lost interest. Like Swiss cheese, I felt the plot contained too many holes and I probably won't read the next books in the trilogy.
An easy read to finish in one sitting. Story moves very quickly and because the plot line moves so fast some of the character development feels lost. I'd have liked a little more development on all fronts. Still, the premise was well thought out and the action cleanly done.
I'm going to assume that this will eventually develop into a series. I have to say I thought the novel was alright but a lot of weird was going on. It seemed super childish at times and hardly believable even for fiction but it kept me entertained.
Interesting concept. I liked when detail was given about the world of Durt, wish it was given a little more. I didn't not like the scene jumps. The story to me didn't flow well. Felt like there was more to be said or done, but it would end and something else started up.
