About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Lestrade of Scotland Yard is making one of his frequent visits to 221B Baker Street, and he tells Holmes and Watson of a strange tale, that hints of some mania to do with Napoleon Bonaparte; for someone is going around destroying the busts of the famous Frenchman, and even committing burglary to do so.

Holmes is intrigued and Lestrade tells of the first event four days previous when a plaster bust was destroyed in a shop by an unidentified man. The bust itself was worth very little, and so it appeared to be just a case of vandalism. The night before lestrade’s visit though two more connected cases occurred, with the residence and surgery also witnessing vandalism of Napoleon busts, with the two locations over two miles apart. Obviously all acts of vandalism are connected.

Lestrade still thinks it is a case of mania rather than a “criminal” act, but of course Holmes concludes that there will be more cases, and asks Lestrade to keep him informed.

The very next morning, Lestrade sends for Holmes for burglary has escalated into murder; for during a robbery upon Mr Horace Harker, an unidentified man had had his throat slashed, though the man did have a photo of another man in his pocket

A broken bust of Napoleon was found in the garden of a house down the road. Holmes has to point out the street light to Lestrade to explain why the bust was broken there rather than somewhere else.

Atención porque este es el primer caso de Sherlock Holmes en el que adivino por qué el criminal estaba haciendo lo que estaba haciendo. A pesar de que no adiviné exactamente qué había dentro de los bustos de Napoleón, sí me imaginé que sería un objeto bastante valioso. Obvio no tenía manera de adivinar que se trataría de la perla negra de los Borgia, pero me sentí muy inteligente, jajajaja.

3 Stars. Most enjoyable - Doyle's writing is always superb, but I found this one somewhat simplistic. Perhaps a symptom of another time. It came out in 1904 in "Collier's" in the US and in "The Strand" in the UK. I've reviewed close to 700 mysteries and thrillers on GR; 120 years ago, there was not likely that number of mysteries ever published in English. The genre was relatively new. I can think of Edgar Alan Poe, Wilkie Collins, but not many other authors. The public appetite was massive. Every new Sherlock Holmes story was a sensation. To this reader of 21st century mysteries and thrillers, with all their complexities and misleading directions, some of the clues in " .. Six Napoleons" jump off the page. Inspector Lestrade occasionally visits Holmes and Watson in the evening for a friendly chat about the events of the day. He tells them of a perplexing case. A man recently went to an antique dealer and deliberately broke a plaster bust of Emperor Napoleon I. Last evening, he repeated the performance at Dr. Barnicott's practice. Lestrade calls it "madness;" he's sure the matter belongs in Dr. Watson's medical field. Holmes is sure it doesn't. (June 2023)

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. Interestingly, this is somehow a more light-hearted story than most of the Sherlock stories. The mystery is twisty and interesting, although the characters aren’t very nice. The interaction between Lestrade & Holmes was as enjoyable as ever, though, and the overall plotline is epic—and the ending is simply excellent!

A man who had read deeply about Napoleon, or who had possibly received some hereditary family injury through the great war, might conceivably form such an IDÉE FIXE and under its influence be capable of any fantastic outrage.”
“That won’t do, my dear Watson,” said Holmes, shaking his head, “for no amount of IDÉE FIXE would enable your interesting monomaniac to find out where these busts were situated.”
“Well, how do YOU explain it?”
“I don’t attempt to do so. I would only observe that there is a certain method in the gentleman’s eccentric proceedings.”

"The Adventure of the Six Napoleons" is the eighth story in the The Return of Sherlock Holmes story collection, the sixth publication in the Sherlock Holmes series.

Someone has been breaking into houses all over London, only to smash porcelain busts of Napoleon. But when a murdered body is also found next to one of the busts, Holmes is on the case.

Really enjoyed this story - It has weirdly low reviews, but for some reason this was one of my favourites.

مجرم يدخل البيوت والمكاتب ويأخذ منها تمثال جصي لنابليون ويقوم بتكسيرها وتحطيمها. وفي مرة يكون هناك قتيل بجوار التمثال المكسور وكان في جيبه صورة لرجل. يبدأ شارلوك بالبحث والتقصي حول التماثيل وحول الصورة. يخمن اين سيتوجه القاتل ويحذر اهل البيت وينصب له كمينا يدخل المجرم لذلك البيت ويسرق تمثال نابليون ويحطمه خارج البيت فيلقوا القبض عليه. تم حل قضية القتل لكن لماذا يكسر تماثيل نابليون؟ يكشف المحقق ظنونه بالتمثال السادس والذي اشتراه هو من مالكه بعد القبض على المجرم. فقام بتحطيمه ليجد جوهرة ثمينة مخبأة فيه ويحكي لواطسون وليسترد قصة الجوهرة.

اجمل مغامرة من مغامرات شيرلوك قرأتها لحد الان رغم اني قرأت معظم ما كتب ارثر كونان دويل لكن هذه القصة مميزة جداً حيث انني علمت ان التماثيل لها لغز لكن لم احدد سبب الجريمة وبذلك اصابتني الدهشة في نهاية الرواية

رأيي 🔍:
قصة كانت أحداثها متوقعة و لم تثر إعجابي الشديد ، أجد أني أنجذب أكثر للمحقق هيركيول بوارو من صنع المبدعة أجاثا كرستي ملكة الجريمة و لم يعد يثير إعجابي المحقق شيرلوك هولمز مثلما فعل من قبل

تبدأ الرواية بلقطة في منزل المحقق الشهير شارلوك هولمز يقف مع المحقق في سكوتلانديار ليستراد الذي يخبر هولمز عن حدوث عدد من ثلاث عمليات في منطقة واحدة لتكسير تماثيل لنابليون و تبدأ التحقيقات معها بحثا عن الجاني الذي كان يفترض المحقق ليستراد حاقد على نابليون لتطور مجريات الأحداث إلى حادثة قتل تقع بحديقة منزل صحفي مع الاستيلاء على تمثال لنابليون و إيجاده محطم على بعد عدت أمتار من البيت ليتبقى ثمتالين لنابليون من صنع مصنع واحد ليتوصل ليستراد لمعرفة شخصية القتيل بينما يربط المحقق هولمز بين القتيل و الجاني و التماثيل الستة لنابليون لي يتضح أن الجاني هو عامل في المصنع قد قام هو القتيل بسرقة لؤلؤة عائلة بورجيا الشهيرة .
حيث أن اخت القتيل تعمل في القصر مما مكنها من سرقة اللؤلؤة و استلمها منه بيبو العامل في المصنع الذي اخفاها في أحد تماثيل نابليون الستة قبل إلقاء القبض عليه و لكن توزعت التماثيل في ارجاء لندن لم يتمكن من معرفة اي تماثل يحتوي على اللؤلؤة مما دعاه إلى السطو على المنازل التي تحوي على التماثيل الا ان هولمز توصل إلى خطته و تم الإيقاع به قبل تنفيذ خطته ..
احد الروايات البوليسية الممتعة و ذات الحبكة التي لا تستطيع كيفية النفاذ إلى تفاصيله بسهولة .

One of my favourite Holmes mysteries that I read recently. I listened to the audiobook by Greg Wagland.

Lestrade brings news often and this time he brings news of a strange case - where a thief goes into establishments and smashes their Napoleon busts.

Immediately I knew that it was because something was inside but this time, it was fun to see how Holmes arrived to the conclusion of what was inside.

I noticed now how meticulous Holmes is. He always makes sure that he has proof and that he has documents that are signed with witnesses - be it a statement or a purchase. He is also a great diplomat - with Scotland Yard he doesn't dismiss their ideas while pushing his own and with other people, he makes sure to inform them when necessary and making them feel safe but also gets what he needs from them.

An interesting mystery taking into account when it was written and that it must have been fresh then.

“Well,” said Lestrade, “I’ve seen you handle a good many cases, Mr. Holmes, but I don’t know that I ever knew a more workmanlike one than that. We’re not jealous of you at Scotland Yard. No, sir, we are very proud of you, and if you come down to-morrow, there’s not a man, from the oldest inspector to the youngest constable, who wouldn’t be glad to shake you by the hand.”

Lestrade stops by Baker Street on the regular to collaborate with Holmes about cases.

In this case, someone apparently doesn’t like Napoleon and goes out of his way to break into people’s homes to destroy any busts of the man. All busts are identical, so Holmes believes each case is more than just a ‘singular’ hatred of Napoleon.

Holmes and Watson are later called to a scene by Lestrade to help with the same investigation, but this time, there is a murder, so the case isn’t as ‘singular’ as they first believed. Holmes concludes that the bust was worth the life of the dead man and that the person breaking the busts is looking for something within them as each one is broken near a lamp. The only clue is a photograph left on the dead man.

Lestrade wants to backtrack on the dead man’s happenings while Holmes wants to go his own way and compare notes later. So each set out on their ‘singular’ activities. His alternate route leads him to track down the sellers and manufacturers of the busts, where he also shows the photograph and finally gets a name. Beppo.

Holmes manipulates the press to his advantage with misdirection.

The three (Holmes, Watson, and Lestrade) meet up later at Baker Street where Holmes argues with Lestrade about who’s done the better job; Holmes’ tracking of the busts and Lestrade identifying the dead man and having a lead to the murderer. But Holmes has the edge as he knows purchasers/current owners of each bust and manages to beat the criminal to his next stop.

The loaded hunting-crop is Holmes’ favorite weapon.

Doyle likes to make things very ‘singular’ in his stories.

Holmes bounds like a tiger and the criminal is captured. It’s the man in the photograph, Beppo. Holmes examines the broken bust and discovers nothing. The next day brings forth nothing much until Holmes attempts to purchase the last bust on his list from its owner who meets him at Baker Street. There is an argument about price but he succeeds in buying it and then proceeds to smash it with his hunting-crop. Then, within the bust, he finds the famous black pearl of the Borgias. Of course, Holmes connects this case with an older, unsolved one, further impressing Lestrade.

Holmes becomes human long enough to appreciate and accept Watson and Lestrade’s applause. It’s quite endearing from Watson’s point of view as he’s so used to seeing Holmes as a cold and practical thinker.

Backstory - Beppo hid the pearl in the bust but was arrested and detained for six years. Later released, he tracks down the busts and attempts to obtain the pearl. The murdered man was an Italian employee who had helped Beppo in the theft but got in the way.

I really liked this one. The mystery is fun and well hidden if you don't know where to look. One of Doyle's better stories. Nice read and adventure.

Lestrade is back once more. He is chilling at Baker Street and he is diverted. Lestrade has a case that appears to be truly dumb and unusual, yet it's disturbing him. Holmes instructs him to spill it. Lestrade discloses to us that a person named Morse Hudson, who ran the 1890s adaptation of Pier One, had somebody crush a bust of Napoleon in his shop and keep running off. Lestrade at first suspected this was "hooliganism." But then a man named Mr. Barnicot had a similar thing transpire. He used to be the pleased proprietor of two rebate busts of Napoleon purchased from Morse Hudson. Be that as it may, some individual as of late softened up to Barnicot's home and office and broke his Napoleon busts. Each of the three Napoleon busts were produced using a similar shape. Lestrade is thinking about whether some insane individual has some kind of Napoleon fixation. Dr. Watson supportively takes note of that there are heaps of mental issue, so who knows. A debt of gratitude is in order for that tip, Watson. Holmes discovers this all tricky, and says to keep him refreshed since apparently idiotic cases regularly end up being significant ones. The following morning Holmes bursts in on Watson and demonstrates to him a message from Lestrade instructing them to go to an address. They do as such and locate a dead body.

رأيي الشخصي :-
الرواية قصيرة جداً ، أحب هذا النوع من الروايات كثيراً حيث أعيش مع المحقق والخبير الاستشاري العظيم هولمز ، رواية صغيرة وخفيفة وانصحكم بها ، النقطة السلبية في الرواية يمكن طريقة سرد الرواية لاتعجب جميع القراء 💙.

مغامرة بوليسية لاقيتها بالصدفة على اليوتوب بصوت إسلام عادل، وأنا مش من هواه القصص البوليسية لكن كانت تجربة حلوة.
مجرم المغامرة هتفتكره في الأول عنده مشكلة مع نابليون بونابرت وكل ما يشوف له تمثال بيكسره، لكن الموضوع كان أكبر من كده بكتير وكان له ضحايا وجرائم قتل لأشخاص بعيدين كل البعد عن علاقتهم بالتماثيل وعلاقتهم بالشخص إللي بيكره نابليون وأي تمثال يخصه 😁 ودي كانت مهمة السيد هولمز وأصدقائه عشان يفكوا لغز تماثيل بانليون.
