The Songbird's Love

Rate this book
"Little Songbird. I want you. I want you to work for me, as a bodyguard and a hacker." Eden glanced at this Italian man, Dante De Luca, one of the Mafia Lords of Chicago. He made her an offer she couldn't refuse with threats. He had her dog and her best friend in his hand. All these years she kept her secret in this damaged and violent Chicago, did her best to stay out of trouble, but now... "...Fine. What's your deal?" "It's simple. Win a hack against Ghost." The Legendary Hacker, Ghost. One of the most sought-after criminal hackers on the Dark Web. Nothing is known about Ghost and nobody can catch him. Not even Dante... Ghost dared to stand in his way about sixteen times. "Beat Ghost?" She repeated unconsciously, completely baffled. She cannot beat she IS Ghost.

Let me start by saying that I’m a romance reader who needs a HEA in her books. So when I read a review that said this story had no HEA, I was unsure if I wanted to read it. But I really loved ‘The war God’s favorite’, another story by this author, so I decided to give this story a chance too. And I’m glad I did! Because even though this story didn’t have a romantic HEA (that one reviewer was telling the truth) for once I was okay with that (much to my own surprise!). I think part of this was because the last part of the story prepared me for a sad ending and another reason was that the epilogue left me feeling positive about everyone’s future.

The story takes place in 2130, in Chicago. The world has changed a lot and is defined between people living in the core (a safe place) and people living in the suburbs (a dangerous place). The people in the core have a good life, they are protected from the outside world where the air is polluted and there’s almost no nature left. The core people have clean air, a good job, money, food and a house with a garden. They have no worries at all. But all this comes with a price. They have to follow the rules and for the slightest misstep they are banished to the suburbs. The suburbs is where all the people who have been exiled from the core live. The air is bad and life is very hard. The Chicago suburbs territory is divided among ten mafia lords named after ten Zodiacs. Each Zodiac leader is dangerous and powerful, but also ensures safety for the people living in his territory in his own deadly way.

Eden is a young girl who lives in the Dragon territory and works as a hostess in a bar. Just like everyone else in the suburb, she has a hard life, to earn extra money to take care of her mother she’s also works as a criminal hacker on the dark web, her name there is Ghost. She’s one of the best hackers (with the help of her hacker friend Loir) and this also puts her in great danger. Many people want to catch Ghost because of the secrets he discovers on the dark web. One of them is Dante De Luca (the tiger), the Italian mafia lord, one of the most dangerous zodiac leaders. So when he comes to the bar where Eden works one night, she knows that she’s in trouble and she’s right. A dangerous game follows between Eden and Dante. Dante wants Ghost working for him alone, but Eden has her own reasons for refusing Dante’s wishes. But Dante goes far to get what he wants, he isn’t afraid to kidnap Eden and her friends to convince Ghost to work for him. But there’s another danger, the core is planning something with the suburbs and it’s nothing good. There’s a war coming and many people are in danger and a lot of people will die if the zodiac leaders don’t find a way to stop the core before it’s too late. Fortunately, they have Ghost on their side and another secret ally from within the core.

Just like the story ‘The war God’s favorite’, this was also a very long story, I like long stories so for me this was something positive. The story read smoothly and I was never bored for a second. Eden was a hacker so there’s a lot of computer talk involved and even though I’m not a computer specialist, I still managed to follow the conversations. So there was action in the ‘real’ world as well as in the dark web. Both were exciting at times. Just like in the other book that I read of this author, there were many deaths in this story, both strangers and secondary characters. That doesn’t mean that the story was dark, it was just emotional at times.

The story wasn’t perfect there were a few things in it that I had questions about. Like the air pollution, in the beginning they needed an air mask to walk outside but later in the story there wasn’t a mention of it and at the end, they were wearing one again. I found that a bit confusing, just like other little details. But I was so fascinated with the characters in the story that the imperfections didn’t bother me much. I loved Eden and Dante. The story was mostly told from Eden’s POV. Dante was a cold-hearted, dangerous, deathly, intelligent guy. During the story you could feel that he had an obsessing with Eden. He treated her different than everyone else. He cared for her in his own way and was very protective of her. Eden was an intelligent, caring and strong woman. She was independent and wasn’t afraid of danger or to stand up to dangerous people. She was also someone who went far for the people she loved and she had many secrets. The connection between Eden and Dante was hot. The secondary characters were also fascinating, especially Loir, Eden’s hacker friend, who was both intelligent and crazy. He drove everyone mad with his nonstop talking and crazy ways but he was a very loyal friend to Eden. You also had Jack, the bar owner, who was also a good friend to Eden. There was Rolf, Dante’s loyal second in command. He was distant but he had a soft spot for Eden’s puppies. We got to meet the Zodiac leaders and each of them was interesting in their own way. Just like the other hackers in this story. The secret ally of Eden and the suburbs stayed a mystery until the very end and to my surprise I didn’t guessed it. The end was also very different than what I thought it would be. The secrets were more complicated than I thought.
And as I said before, the story didn’t have a romantic ending but the future was good and happy in a different way.

Just like the other story, this is a story I know I will reread in the future.

I SHOULD NOT HAVE READ THIS BOOK. ✋️
INCOMING SPOILERS.....

IM such a crybaby and I cried at the end LIKE A LOT. I avoid books with endings like this for a reason because then I can't stop thinking about it for days on end, I'm the same with movies and shows. Sad stuff is NOT for me. So sad to say I regret reading this. This was a happy ending for the people BUT a tragic love story 😫😫😫😫.
Thats all imma say because I'm too upset right now. ✋️

This book is too tragic. The ending is very tragic. Everyone dies except the heroine. I just dont have any words left. I have never read any sadder story than this. I know my sleep is gone for some days now.

I think this book is really good , not really into the whole dystopian genre in general but this book really got me hooked. But I still felt some plot-holes here and there ….

For instance Dante was not supposed to feel any sort of pain then how was he having massive headaches also it was not really explained why with Eden is headaches disappear like it doesn’t make sense …maybe it was to try to connect with the whole Adam thing but it still doesn’t logically make sense as it’s not mentioned the exact reason and also he doesn’t get any headaches later in the story.

Also how many days or months actually takes place during the story coz it seems like all these events happens just in days after she was forced to work with Dante like in few days all these happened makes no sense .

I really like Eden and Dante’s chemistry but like I said before their relationship progressed this fast in matter of days ?? Idk if I missed something regarding the timeline but pretty sure it was not mentioned so yeeeeeeaaa……😐😶. But I do wish we got Dante’s POV coz it wud have made the story is character much more compelling…..like starting we see him as this dangerous mafia and then see his charming flirty side which is nice too but in the middle suddenly his personality is just being a obsessive puppy for Eden and just become a side character😪😓. Which cud get more is POV of the whole chimera thing that happens to him how he feels etc . Coz it feels like an afterthought coz we got no or minimum reaction of hearing all this from him .

Overall I really liked this book ….i still gave it 5⭐️ because all the characters were really well done , the ending was appropriate for this type of genre .

I love this book. I read it years ago when it was newly out and decided to give it a re-read on KU, and it didn't disappoint. There's a lot going on in this story, multiple concepts to keep track of and quite a few characters to meet, but the author has a real talent for introducing them and interweaving things so that you don't get lost and it all has its place.
There isn't a traditional romantic HEA but it's tragically beautiful and the MMC is every bit the dominant masculine possessive lead you'd hope for, without compromising the FMC's own strengths, which I always find a win. The end of the story leaves a feeling of hope, so in that case there kind of is an overall HEA.
This has dystopian, sci-fi, Mafia, romance and urban aspects and i think readers of a lot of different genres could enjoy this. A long read, but I enjoyed that aspect and it was packed and not drawn out at all. Love this story as with all of Jenny's work.

This book broke me. I am in tears. I can’t believe Dante and Loir died. But such an inspiring story at the same time. There’s so much darkness in this world, but it’s with fighting the darkness so people can live better lives. Eden went through so much but she changed the world for the better. Dante, even though he was heartless towards others, he loved her so much! He didn’t even care about himself, he just cared about her! And don’t get me started on loir, he cared too. Good book but it has a bittersweet ending. 4 stars because it’s an amazing book bur 1 star because it made me cry.

This is not the type of story I usually would go for as i am not into into futuristic books but I gave it a go as I love Jenny's other work. Let me say I was not disappointed! It felt like I was there with Eden and felt all her emotions. I love her hacking partner too....for some reason he made me think of the boiler man from Spirited Away 🤣 There were a few unexpected twists that floored me. If you love action, romance , kicka** heroins and weirdos, then check this out!

The Songbird’s Love

This story was amazing, frustrating, heart wrenching and romantic. I’ve never gone on a journey quite like this. I both love and hate the ending. It’s a book that I won’t read over and over again like Jenny Fox’s other books but it will certainly stay with me. I adored Dante and Eden. You should get to know them too. Highly recommend.

This genre is somewhat of a departure from Jenny Fox's regular books (still in the area of fantasy but with a focus on tech instead of magic) but no less engaging. She creates a unique world with compelling characters.

well written…

Honestly enjoy your writing and your imagination is 10 out of 10….

I’m very annoyed about the ending… Not sure why cos I should know better. You did the same thing in the War Gods Favourite. :(

You better allocate some time for this book cuz once you start you won't be able to put it down.
Great story, funny, witty and uff steamy. The dystopian future does make you start pondering your life choices.
Highly recommend, a must read for sure.

I loved this book. It was very easy to read but completely and utterly engrossing (is that even a word?). I haven't had a book make me feel all of my emotions in a really long time.

Ben echt teleurgesteld. Dit voelt als tijdverspilling. En dat dystopische gedeelte was ff verwarrend
