Warning: Do not read this book if you haven't read the first two. Also, spoilers ahead if you haven't read them.

The book starts with ex-reporter Josie Jessup attending one of her former student's funeral. She is living with a fake identity and teaching journalism in the local community college, due to the threat to her life as evident from the last two books. She is dead to everyone, except Charlotte, Aaron, Gabriella, and Whit.

The funeral is of Michael, the same whom we met briefly in the first book.

In O'Hannigan's Tavern, Brendan O’Hannigan is drawn to the television when an announcement comes about media mogul (Josie's father) Stanley Jessup's hospitalisation. It's been three years, and he hasn't been able to forget anything about her, since her 'death'.

Josie's mother was European royalty. So now it's clear why she is also royalty, in a way. An American princess.

She risks everything, her and her son's life, to visit her father. She wants him to know that she's alive, and also to introduce him to his three-year-old grandson, CJ.

It couldn't have been a more perfect cover. Little CJ with his bright red curls. I love how Charlotte is still present here. She is the most badass of them all.

When Brendan finds Josie in the hospital, she fears for her life as he was the one sent to kill her three years ago. While he is also angry with her, thinking she deceived him and seduced him for a story. He knew it was dangerous to get close to her. Brendan's father was the much-feared Dennis O'Hannigan, Chicago's crime boss.

Little CJ (Charles Jesse Brandt, named after Charlotte, aww) is so cute and courageous. And he will 'p-tect' his Mommy, even from Brendan.

When I read the first two books, this wasn't linked with them, and I had totally missed it. I re-read the first two books again. And finally, Josie Jessup, who's mentioned in the first book, and whose father plays an important role there, gets her own book.

"She was too scared to thank him and too smart to trust him."

And from there all the action starts.

There was a threat to her life because she was reaching for the truth in her last exposé, about who killed Brendan's father.

It is such a thrilling ride. Brendan and Josie not able to trust each other, again and again. But they get there in the end. And then the enemy comes out to be a totally unexpected someone. And not one, there are multiple villains. More the merrier. It has a perfect ending with an epilogue bringing all three stories together.

Very good book, action packed from start to finish. When Josie hears about her father's injury and heart attack she feels that she must go see him. She hasn't seen him in more than three years and he has no idea she is still alive. When she gets to the hospital she and her son are attacked, then Brendan comes to their rescue. Josie was involved with him years ago when she was investigating him as the son of a mobster. Now she has no idea whether to trust him.

I liked both Brendan and Josie. Josie had been a very intense investigative reporter who showed a real talent for getting deep into a story. Several years ago she had purposely gotten close to Brendan in order to snoop around into his life and try to prove the rumors about him. She didn't expect to fall for him. When she started receiving threats the Marshals Service faked her death and put her in Witness Protection, sure that he was trying to kill her because of things she may have found out. Now she is desperate to see her father and make sure he is all right. When she is attacked as soon as she tries to see him she is stunned to see Brendan coming to her rescue. She is grateful for his help but she still doesn't know if she can trust him. She does start to feel guilty about keeping his son's existence from him, especially when she sees the instant love between the two. As they have to work together to escape whoever is after them, Josie begins to see that she may have misjudged Brendan, but he still has secrets that eat away at her trust. I liked her love of her son and how hard she worked to protect him. I also liked the fact that she didn't try to keep Brendan away from him once they were together. I also liked the way that she kept her cool at the end and helped make things come out right. I also liked the way that becoming a mother also caused a maturing of the way she looked at things like the way she went after her stories.

Brendan was great. I really liked the way that he was so determined to make his mission successful. When he got involved with Josie he didn't realize at first what her job was. Even when he did he couldn't bring himself to break things off with her and blamed himself when he thought he had caused her death. He was stunned to see that she was alive and more so when he saw her son. He knew that he needed to protect them and to do that he needed to be able to regain her trust. I loved the way that his love for his son was so immediate. Just seeing him take care of CJ and do things with him showed Josie that maybe there was more to Brendan than she had thought. I felt so bad for Brendan because he knew he could gain Josie's trust if he could just tell her the truth but he was still worried about whether he could trust her with the information. I loved his actions at the end and how he realized that she was all he could ever want.

The constant action in this book kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. I had my suspicions about part of the conclusion but another part was a complete surprise to me.

Josie Jessup is an heiress to her father's media empire. She is a gutsy journalist who will go to any length necessary to get her story, even striking up a love affair with Brendan O'Hannigan who she believes is the new mob boss. She didn't plan on falling in love with this wonderfully gorgeous man. When Brendan discovers the reason why this beautiful woman has spent the last several months in his arms and in his bed, he is furious and brokenhearted. Shortly after the shattering breakup, an attempt on Josie's life almost takes her out and while she is in the hospital she finds out she is carrying the mob boss's baby. She goes into the Witness Protection Program and another attempt on her life is made. This time her handler has help in faking Josie's death and setting her up with several aliases, replanting her in another state for her protection. She is now know as JJ Brandt and her son, CJ, is three years old and he is a crackerjack sweetheart. Unfortunately she believes, as does her handlers, that Brendan O'Hannigan is the person trying to kill her. Four years after the attempts on her life her father has been attacked and she decides to quietly return to her hometown to check on his health. Little does she know this is a set up to draw her out.

Brendan O'Hannigan, lost his father, a mob boss, to a murder that was never solved. To his surprise, his father named him as his sole heir. Stepping in to take over the 'family business,' Brendan has ulterior motives. When he hears about Josie's father he makes a trip to the hospital to check on the old guy. To his utter shock and surprise he sees Josie there at the hospital and the curly-headed little boy who is holding her hand looks suspiciously like he did as a child, except for the hair color. He will do whatever it takes to protect Josie and his son.

I really liked this book. I will say that, for me, the beginning was a bit draggy although it did give us all of the important background information. I was ready to jump into the meat of the story before that happened. Even though this book had a sweet HEA and was a great find, I refrained from giving it a five-star rating because of the path the story took at approx. the 75% mark. There were a few things that Brendan could have cleared up earlier on that would have helped Josie and her son trust him, feel they were safe with him and prevent her from putting herself in so much danger. He did not trust her with that info although I feel she had earned it. He was advised to be honest with her but he didn't take that important advice. It took him down a few notches in my opinion. Withholding the truth made me somewhat doubt his love for her. And lastly, I feel Josie took the blame when it was not really her fault. Someone was trying to kill her and she did what she had to do to keep her son safe. Those situations could have been avoided with the truth from Brendan.

In Childs’ romantic suspense novel, after spending years in witness protection, Josie Jessup and her son return home only to walk into a deadly trap. Her former lover, FBI agent Brendan O’Hannigan, comes to her rescue and is willing to go as far as it takes to protect them both.

A good addition to the Royal Bodyguards series.

To sum up this book by a proverb: God sends meat and the devil sends cooks.
It started as good ideas and I was stuck. As the stories piled on, they became inconsistent, and sometimes directly contradicting. The biggest problem was that there were a lot break lines came when I least expect them to, really distracted.

This book represents why I still read Harlequin Intrigue novels. It was action-packed through-out, and had so many twists that kept me reading. I enjoyed Josie & Brendan's interactions, and I found CJ to be oh-so-cute!!

I really enjoyed this title, and definitely recommend it!
