The moment the stick turns pink Lainey Keeler's life is turned upside down. She's still aching from past hurts, and single parenthood wasn't planned, but, marveling at the tiny life fluttering inside her, Lainey knows she'll do anything for this baby—on her own.
Firefighter Ben Lawless is tormented by memories of the friend he couldn't save, and a pretty pregnant woman living on his land is an unwelcome distraction. Still, as Lainey's determination and spirit tempt him out of the darkness, he wonders whether he can have the family he's convinced himself he doesn't deserve….
Two-time Golden Heart Finalist Ami Weaver has always been a writer, but once she started penning 'romances' in middle school she never looked back. She's come a long way since then--and learned what romance really is. Now she is an award-winning author of warm contemporary romances for Harlequin Romance and Harlequin Special Edition. Ami's manuscripts have won the Maggie, the Marlene, and been finalists in Harlequin's SYTYCW and Mills and Boon's New Voices contests, among others. Ami lives in Michigan and balances writing around four great kids, three crazy cats, and one very supportive husband. This debut by Ami Weaver was a wonderful read! Ami has a warm voice and an easy to follow writing style. Both Lainey and Ben are engaging characters that you can help but care about and root for them to find their HEA. I'll definitely be looking for Ami's second release in September. :-)
This story is really sweet! It's about how Lainey's life takes a 180 when she finds out she's pregnant. The father? Not in the picture. She wants to keep this baby, even if her flower shop is not doing as well as she expected and she has to do the pregnancy/motherhood all by herself. Ben, a hot firefighter (well, show me one that is not hot), haunted by past actions that led to the death of his best friend, is searching for redemption. That's all he wants. What he isn't looking for is a cute, sexy, single, (very) pregnant woman to enter his life. While Lainey tries to deal with her flower shop, her hormones and a tormented firefighter, Ben is learning how to let the past go and maybe, just maybe, be worthy of Lainey.
As I said, the story is sweet, with funny parts and really touching. Lainey came from money, but did her best to succeed on her own. You could see how hard she struggled, but did it knowing she was capable of keeping her business and rising a child. I love this type of heroine.
Even though the story had a great pace at the beginning, I felt that the last +-50 pages were so rushed. It's like the author had a page limit and tried to squeeze the rest of the story in these pages. That's why I gave 3-3.5 stars.
An Accidental Family is the debut title from Ami Weaver. After reading it, I find myself greatly looking forward to seeing her writing as she becomes more seasoned.
Lainey came from a privileged family, but after the breakup of a disastrous marriage approved by her parents, she decides she will make her own decisions from then on. She opens a flower shop, and lives in a modest apartment in the same building. We find Lainey reeling when she finds out she’s pregnant after a one-night hookup with the quarterback of her high school at her reunion. For many reasons which are revealed throughout the book, she’s left to raise the baby on her own. Read More
Great debut book. Though Ben's internal conflict is serious and Lainey's external conflict high, the book itself was a quick, light read which I enjoyed. Really looking forward to this new author's next book!
