I loved reading this book; Darcie & Caleb were great characters and the designer dogs were a fun addition to the story. Good mystery & suspense as well as romance.
This was actually a very good book. It starts off with a woman named Darcie and she’s working as a maid at the Fairmont Estates. She decides that she wants to go check out the dog kennels that are on the grounds because Mrs. Fairmont breeds multipoms (sp?), the very same dog that her mother was given when she became very sick. Upon approaching the kennels, she meets Caleb; a man that she assumed was just a painter. Together they decide they are going to check out the pups. When they walk into the office of the kennels, they find the kennel manager dead on the floor. This leads to a whole domino effect of events for Darcie and Caleb. Caleb belongs to a group that helps falsely accused people to clear their names and regain control of their lives. Since Detective Samuels is looking at Darcie suspiciously, he tells Darcie that he will help her any way he can. Throughout the book, Darcie’s apartment has been rummaged through (the only proof that she has is a quilt that was moved in a box), she is almost kidnapped when leaving a restaurant with Caleb, she finds out the true relationship between Mr. Fairmont and her mother and she herself is actually kidnapped towards the end of the book. Darcie isn’t sure what the thieves are looking for because all she has is her mother’s dog Percy and a shoebox with the few remaining items that she has left of her mother, not to mention the horribly gaudy collar that Percy originally came with. I don’t want to give away what happens in the book as far as the relationship between Darcie and Mr. Fairmont because it’s the biggest part of the book that can spoil it for others should they choose to read it. What I can tell you, is this book definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I recently lent my grandfather a book (The Gunslinger, Stephen King.) So when I stopped by his house he was eager to show me some books he'd been sent by a relative. All of them where suspense romance novel with large print, large print being something he needs but are not that common where we live. He offered to loan them to me if interested, and this was one of two I selected.
There was nothing until the Dear Reader at the back of the book to indicate this was the third in a series, but I never felt like I was missing out on anything so I'm not really bothered by that, just thought it was interesting.
The book is pretty decent. The mystery was ok, the romance was pretty much non-existant and I'm not even quite sure why they would hook up at the end. The characters were fairly religious in a superficial way. Well, the main guy is quite religious and is sure god "talks" to him in the form of him feeling nudged to do certain things. Ok, crazy pants.
I really liked Caleb in the other books in this series, but this one was a little different. I'm not sure why, but he felt like a much stronger role in the other books. This was a good story. The plot was good. The characters were good, but there seemed to be a missing element. I guess my final input would be that the suspense part of the story was good, but the romance part not so much. Caleb and Darcie spend all their time running from the bad guys but there is more attention paid to Caleb's previous relationship that turned him off woman than on anything that might pull Caleb and Darcie together as a couple.
Stacie Wiley has moved to Georgia for a fresh start after her mother's death. She walks into a room at her new employer's kennel where a man has been murdered. Over the next few days she faces nearly being kidnapped (rescued by Caleb Buchanan, who was with her when she discovered the dead body). And they both are run off the road. All while trying to convince the lead detective that she had nothing to do with the murder. Oh, and she and Caleb also discover there's more than puppies that are being sold at the kennel. What's hidden in the dog collars that accompany them to their new homes?
Darcie is trying to start anew but runs into trouble on the first day of her new job. Caleb is one of the good guys but she doesn't know him and it takes a while to trust. Trying to find the trust puts them both in danger and it may not be easy to get out of it. Some of those after her are not revealed until near the end.
I love Caleb's story, especially since the physical attraction betwen him and Darcie isn't the focus of the beginning of the relationship. The only thing that bothered me is Caleb's relationship with Anita (the thing that soured him so much throughout the course of the book) is never really resolved.
I found a new favorite author! Yes! :) Excellent book, great suspense, loveable characters (Have to read the other books in this series)unique story with a satisfying ending :) Love, love!!
