When Slade McKennon comes looking for Mia Cooper, the Dawson sheriff's only mission is to keep her safe. But the wounded DEA agent isn't ready to trust the man whose past is so entwined with hers. Slade lives by his own code of honor—one that prevents the widowed father from pursuing the woman he's known most of his life. But for the first time in ages, Mia feels safe. And she's finally starting to seal up the scars on both her body and her heart. Can Slade and his sweet but aching son provide the healing touch of love?
Brenda Minton lives, procrastinates, writes, drinks coffee, raises her kids and is wife to her husband, in the Ozarks.
Okay, now to first person because a third person bio sounds like someone else wrote it about me, and is just license to create flowery prose about myself.
I grew up on a farm in the Ozarks. It was long ago and far away, in a land before cable TV, video games and the internet. To pass the time we read books, watched (gasp) network TV that rarely came in clear, and had friends over on weekends to play music on the front porch, or card games in the dining room.
The result of growing up 'country' was an active imagination. For fun I wrote stories to entertain myself and I dreamed of being an author. Oh, but first, before writing, I wanted to be a jockey.
Writing won out over being a jockey. In the spring of 2006 I got the call that made those dreams come true: the call that welcomed me into the Steeple Hill family of authors.
This book really had it all. It had a cowboy, angst, mystery, deep emotions, fulfillment, spirit and most important, a strong woman. We're not all dainty, you know.
I loved the struggle that the characters had becuase of their emotions. They went deep. There was no trivial immature moments between this couple. A man lost the woman he loved. Now five years later he is falling for her best friend. How do you not feel guilty?? How do you move on?
LOVED IT!!
However, and a big however at that; this should have been listed as Christian lit. Though I am happy it wasn't at the time because I would have never read it. Despite the great story there was a little too much, "I'll pray for you", "God loves you", "He will create your path", "Go to church and pray harder"... yeah a little too Bible-thumperish. And with that said.... no sex.
I never understood why Christian romance can't have sex. Are they saying Christians don't have sex? They are all like the Virgin Mary and bear children by immaculate conception? Yeah, that's what I thought... LOL
Though dissappointed that I didn't get any hot under the collar scenes, I closed off this book with a deep sigh of contentment. Closure of a good story. :)

The Cowboy Lawnman is the fifth book in Cooper Creek series, but it reads fine as a standalone. Good quick read, but did not really stand out for me. I was hoping for my cowboy fix, and did not really get that. Thought it was sweet and easy for one of those days.
Mia Cooper is back in town after getting injured on her job and watching her partner/one of the good friends die - leaving behind a pregnant wife and children. She is having a difficult time because she is a DEA agent and now there is a strong possibility that Mia will never be able to use the arm she does everything with. So through the book she struggles with all kinds of pain of not being able to do things anymore - and now people are offering her help and she doesn't know how to live relying on others.
It was a clean Christian Romance and I did like Slade. I though he was rugged, and a good father - but aside of him being a Sheriff I could not picture Slade as a cowboy. He comes with his own package. He is a father to a boy named Caleb and knew Mia since they were kids, he also married Mia's best friend even thought Mia has been in love with him like forever...but never really said anything to him.
So they spend most of the book trying to figure out if their attraction for each other is right and if they should do anything about it, since his late wife was Mia's best friend and it is now awkward. Mia does a great job filling the role of a mother to Caleb and it did hold some very touching moments between them that made my heart melt. I also liked the fact that Mia's family who has adopted or fostered her, is so wonderful to her. The mother and father as well as her brothers all accept her and there is no resentment of any kind.
There was also a bit of a suspense thing, because of the case that Mia had been undercover working on when she got shot. Well the guy got out and was now looking for his missing money. The ending happened pretty quickly in the last few pages of the book and there was a lot of rehashing between Mia and Slade rather or not going forth as a couple is such a good idea.
Anyway, nothing spectacular, but a good quick, light read anyway.
Lmfao. 3 stars because it kept my attention during a dark winter. 2 stars because the 5 year old talked like an adult man, and there were NO sexy scenes,, as I was led to believe
I like Brenda Minton’s books and looked forward to reading another of the Cooper Creek stories. Mia Cooper is an undercover DEA agent who gets shot in the line of duty, plus loses her partner at the same time. Not only is she coming home to Dawson, Oklahoma to recover from being shot in her right shoulder, she’s working through issues of her partner’s wife and young children being left on their own. Will she ever be able to use her right hand again to work or defend someone in need? How can she grieve her loss, when her partner’s wife is left alone, with two little children and about to give birth to a third child? Slade McKennon is a Dawson deputy Sheriff that has known Mia since she was adopted in the Cooper family when she was seven. Her adopted brothers are Slade’s best friends so she’s grown up with Slade. Slade married Mia’s best friend Vickie, but loses her in an accident, leaving Slade to raise his son Caleb by himself. Mia is drawn into helping take care of Slade’s five-year-old son, wanting a relationship with both the father and son, but feels guilty about taking what Vicky had, plus feeling like she can’t, and shouldn’t, take Vicky’s place. This story is a great mix of small town/ranch life, mixed with horses and rodeo, and true life situations. One of the side story lines I wish would have been worked more into the story is Mia’s hunt for her little sister, Breezy who she hasn’t seen since the siblings were split up when their mother over dosed. Breezy is found during the book’s story, but just cooks when Mia comes home. I’m hoping there is a book on Breezy in the future to add her to the Cooper Creek “family”. I also wish the author would have reviewed the characters in the past Cooper Creek books to refresh my memory, so I could revisit them again. I think it would also help readers want to read past books in this series. Readers get invested in the characters of favorite books and always want to keep in the “family loop”. Overall, The Cowboy Lawman is a good book, and Brenda Minton is a great author to follow. I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest review from Netgalley. Thanks!
Great story, now I want to read more about Cooper Creek. Good clean story dealing with life changes. Mia Cooper does not know who she is anymore or what she wants to do next in her life. She has returned home after being shot in the shoulder. Mia feels guilty because her partner was killed before she could react. Thier cover was blown. With Mia's injury she does not know if she will be able to use her right arm. She can't lift her gun. She is a undercover DEA Agent. She has local police driving by her house once a hour because someone stole some money. Someone leaked who they were, maybe someone in the DEA even. Mia wants to find the leak. She also is searching for her little sister that she saw last when she was seven. Her mom OD and all three of them went to different families. She loves her adopted Cooper family but she wants to find Breezy too.
Slade McKennon is a Dawson deputy Sheriff. He wants to help keep Mia safe. She was his wife's best friend. Plus his good friend's little sister. His wife died 5 years ago and he has raised his son Caleb by himself with help of his family. Mia's always been offbounds. Slade keeps thinking about her now.
Mia has always been a tomboy. She was a rodeo barrel racing champion and went to nationals 3 times winning once. She always kept up with her brothers. Now she is lost. She helps baby sit Caleb when Slade's mom has a heartattack and shares her memories of his mother Vicky with him. Mia has loved Slade but knew Vicky loved him too and he did not see her that way. She can't feel Vicky's shoes.
I love all the different characters and want to read more stories about them. Mia's grandmother is a hoot. She hit the jackpot with her adopted family. I want to read more books by Brenda. I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest review from Netgalley.
Publisher: Love Inspired (April 1, 2013) 224 pages ASIN: B00ALTWPVM
One thing I'm really learning about myself from reading the 'Cooper Creek' series by Brenda Minton is that I apparently am starting to really like cowboys. Not that I want my husband to quit his IT job and become one, mind you; but I'm starting to understand the appeal they have to people. Ok, now that's out of the way . . . the book. I REALLY appreciate how Brenda's books (well, the ones I've read anyway) have the characters that fall in love start out as 'just friends'. Granted, there's that spark of attraction there, but she really brings out how the best relationships are based on a foundation of friendship and respect. I also enjoyed this story in particular talking about what it means to 'wear many sets of shoes' and to know how to find what our true identity is . . . who we really are. This is the last of the 'Cooper Creek' series that's currently (as of May 2013) published, and it's going to be hard to say goodbye to Angie, Tim, and their family for the time being!
Mia's dealing with grief: grief at losing her work partner and grief at possibly losing the job she loves due to her injury. Slade's dealing with an older grief: the loss of his wife (who was also Mia's friend).
Mia wants to be independent. I think this stems partly from her upbringing where it seems she had to count on herself to take care of herself and her siblings, and partly from her job. It's tough for her to accept help. I think Mia feels she's always playing a role--she doesn't really know who she is at this point--and she's not sure what she'll become.
Caleb is a cute kid and his presence helps bridge the gap between Slade and Mia. There's a tough scene where we realize he misses his mom and how little he knows about her.
I think Mia's been in love with Slade for a while but hasn't acknowledged it because Vicki claimed him long ago. She feels disloyal to Vicki if she loves Slade.
It was nice to see Mia find her sister, Breezy--but I felt like it happened kind of fast. I wonder if there's more story there that will be told in a future book in the series. (I also haven't read other books in the series as far as I remember so it's possible there were other references to Breezy there that I don't know about.)
Can broken hearts heal each other with God's help?
Mia and Vicki were best friends. They both grew up with Slade. Mia went off and became an undercover agent for the DEA. Vicki married Slade. Vicki is killed in an auto accident. Mia is shot and her partner killed. Can two broken people find love? Great story, strong characters, and a mix of humor, romance and suspense. Who could ask for more?
All through out I kept wishing this story was written under the suspense love inspired and included more suspense elements. It was a good story and enjoyable for the most part. It seemed to be lacking though.
A wounded DEA agent comes home to heal and runs into her former best friend's husband who was now a widower. She tries to keep her distance from him and to regain use of her injured arm but neither of those things happen.
This is the 8th book I read by Brenda Minton. I liked the Christian theme in this story. This book's storyline was heart breaking 💔 & sad 😢, but I'm sorry it didn't grab my interest.
1) I absolutely LOVE BRENDA MINTON books. 2) I’m immediately drawn to anything with a cowboy … and typically love it. 3) I’m immediately drawn to anything with a lawman.
If you put a cowboy hat and boots on a lawman, in a story written by BRENDA MINTON … well now I’m in Heaven.
I can’t think of a single story by MS. MINTON that I’ve read that I haven’t fallen in love with the hero. That alone says a lot about her ability to weave an amazing story. THE COWBOY LAWMAN was no exception, but a rule to MS. MINTON’S storytelling.
I love the Cooper family, and every character that sets their eyes on a Cooper member. I loved Slade McKennon’s character and his story. I often fall for the hero, but it takes an amazing writer to get me to REALLY like the heroine as well, and MS. MINTON accomplished that, too in this amazing read.
Slade McKennon feels it’s his duty to keep Mia Cooper safe. Only problem is, Mia doesn’t need a man to keep her safe. Especially not the handsome lawman she’s known most of her life, and was married to her best friend. She does just fine on her own.
THE COWBOY LAWMAN will have you swooning over Slade McKennon. It’s filled with interesting, three-dimensional characters with a touch of mystery and suspense. Your heart will race and your body tingle as you read the most amazing lines MS. MINTON delivers.
As always, BRENDA MINTON has roped me in and taken me away with her storytelling. Once started, you cannot seem to part with it until you have finished the very last word, and even then, you are left wanting more.
I have just one question … When’s the next one due out!!!!!
I feel a “Breeze” coming. Read the book and you’ll get it.
This book tell the story of Mia, injured from her job as a cover and witnessing the death of her partner in her arm is back at her hometown, trying to recuperate from her injury. Due to her injury, she may not be able to work with the authority again and it scare her shitless. She is clueless and wonders what the future holds for her. Slade, Mia’s best friend widower, understand her grief and sadness. He has gone thru it all when his wife was killed after an accident. Mia doesn’t understand the attraction that she have for Slade and is struggling to suppress them from development more so when Slade is her best friend husband. Mia is always the one who is taking care of others but as her identity as an undercover burst and is now in danger, Slade is around to protect her although it was not welcome with her.
This book have a good story line and I like all the other characters in this book. It make the story very much livelier. The plot of the story focuses on friendship and the progress of how it developed to love. One would have questioned why only now that Slade is having feeling for Mia but the author have indicated that Slade has been warned by Mia’s brother not to mess up with Mia and hence he did not pursue her when they were young. Overall, this book is a good read with interesting sideline story.
Slade McKennon has been a lawman in Cooper creek for a few years. Five years ago he lost his wife in a car crash; Mia Cooper was his wife’s best friend as well as one of his best friends. He has yet to be able to move on. Mia Cooper is an injured DEA agent who comes home to cooper creek to recover. Only to discover that her life is in danger, and Slade wants to protect her. Neither can let go of the past and move. Mia has loved Slade since she was a teenager but when her best friend said she loved him Mia kept her feelings to herself not wanting to hurt her two best friends.
I enjoyed The Cowboy Lawman then again I love all the books that I read. I love that the Love Inspired line is a romance line that puts God and faith at the center of the relationships and the romance in the book. It is nice to be able to pick up a romance knowing that it is going to be “clean” and PG. I cannot wait for the next book in the Cooper Creek series. Brenda Minton has written another winner.
I received an e book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Really interesting tale that had my attention the whole time. The pace was wonderful and the characters engaging. Great dynamic in the relationship that made it very believable. Beautiful storytelling that entertained the whole time!
It had really great flow and did the job of making me think at times. I love a book that taps into my emotions. I am a real sucker for a sexy romance!! I laugh, I cry and I wish the hero were real so he could be mine! LOL
I would love to see more from this author! Definitely one to watch in the future.
Cooper Creek. A wonderful place to visit every few months. This is Mia's story. Mia is one of the many foster children that Tim and Angie Cooper took into their family when she was a small child. Now a grown woman, she looks for her little sister whom she was separated from when their mother died. Mia has become a DEA agent and while undercover, her partner was shot and killed. Mia was injured. Now she has return home and needs ot figue out what she is going to do with her life. Enter Slade McKennon. Best friend to his wife, Mia has loved Slade forever but when Vicki claimed him Mia vowed to let her love him. Vicki has been dead for 5 years now and it's time for both Slade and Mia to get on with their lives.
Another great Cooper Creek story by and amazing author, Brenda Minton.
A sweet and clean romance that tends to drag along. Mia, a DEA agent injured on the job and now recuperating back home, struggles greatly with who she is without the badge.
That's understandable.
She is also struggling with her feelings about the "cowboy lawman", her childhood best friend, Slade. Mia knows she could never fill Slade's late wife/her best friend's shoes. She cannot be the wife to Slade or the mother needed for Slade's son, Caleb.
This struggle is a very long one.
There is suspicion surrounding Mia's injury and her DEA partner's death, but you don't really get to it until the end of the book and even then, it is so quick that it left me unsatisfied. I was expecting more to happen.
I did like the way Slade finally gets the girl, I even cried a bit.
Brenda Minton has such a wonderful way of creating incredibly interesting and addictive Christian romance stories. I am absolutely in love with the Cooper Creek series, and "The Cowboy Lawman" was just another amazing installment. It was so good I could hardly put it down, and I finished it in a day and a half. I loved reading about Mia and Slade's story. They had both gone through grief, loss, and guilt, among other things, but managed to come out ahead together. Slade's five-year-old son, Caleb, was so adorable; The three of them really made a perfect family. This truly was an amazing story, and I can't wait to read the next book! Keep 'em coming, Brenda!
Mia was a DEA agent who had just had her partner die in her arms. She is wounded and questioning herself. Slade is the local sheriff who only wants to keep a long time friend safe. Slade has lost his wife who was also Mia's best friend. Both find it hard to move on and with Slade's son to consider, they do not want to complicate their relationship. Mia's large family try to help but sometimes family only add to the confusion. A good read. See if Slade and his son can help heal Mia's aching heart.
I really liked this book. I didn't think the "shoes" were corny I thought it was special. Also perfect for the shoe hangup!!! I am working both directions of Cooper Creek as I unknown to me started in the middle with "The Ranchers Secret Wife" really one of my favorites. So I have just ordered the ones preceding. Then I will read these again. Always read favorites more than once.
I usually like Cooper Creek books better than this, but I had trouble getting past improbabilities in this story. Would an experienced law officer offer to care for an especially precious child alone in her home shortly after it had been broken into by someone still on the loose who might return and be a threat? Would the child's dad agree to that risk? I don't think so.
