Good story. I could see this being a super hero movie, plus it leaves lots of room for a sequel. The writing was a little too explain-y throughout the first half of the book - you could probably delete every other sentence and make the storytelling much tighter. But the second half was well-written, matching the pace of the action.
The author contacted our podcast to ask us to read this book, and because I'm the sci-fi lover, I got the honor of reading this book. It is always a thrill to dig into a well written book, but finding a self published well written book feels like finding the holy grail. Michael, you need to sign this book, because after they make the movie, this copy is going to be worth big bucks.
309 is a science fiction novel written about Lisa Hudson, a journalist living in Pittsburgh. A disaster changes Lisa’s situation and life, causing her to observe things she never thought were possible. She and a team have to work together defeating aliens and the struggle to achieve peace is when the story becomes interesting.
The author touches on new elements of fantasy and science fiction in such a way that it felt as though the concept of the storyline was novel. I particularly enjoyed the title of the book. It was very fitting to the content of the book.
The pace of the story was steady and continued to be intriguing. Every scene, to my understanding, had a revelation which was surprising and thrilling to the eyes.
The literature was descriptive and I believe that made it be a delightful read. As a fantasy novel, I was expecting the exact standard of lyrical flow and I appreciated the authors skill in living up to my expectation.
Lisa’s character was drawn carefully and blended well into the storyline. Her journalist nature and personality were a skillful addition to the book.
I would recommend this book to sci-fi readers and people who like to read on aliens.
'309' by Michael Shotter has been a truly wonderful read! A sci-fi novel that is packed with adventure, mystery and a twist at the end I definitely didn't see coming. This is a superb read, highly recommend this book, you won't be disappointed!
I couldn’t put this book down! 309 doesn’t waste any time immersing you in the plot and action! I enjoyed it thoroughly and loved seeing the story unfold. There is a distinct playlist that runs throughout the book, and if I wasn’t familiar with the song mentioned, I would find it and listen to it before proceeding to read that particular section. This created a fantastic sci fi action movie in my head and it was exciting to not only see what was happening through the descriptive words, but to hear what was being listened to by the characters. There were some funny one liners the characters shared back and forth, and I loved the Pittsburgh references! Immediately when I finished it, I was hoping there was already a sequel. I can’t wait to see what comes next from Michael Shotter!
309 is an absolute must read! The descriptive imagery, diverse cast of relatable characters, and fast paced plot make it a fun read for fans of any genre. Get ready for compelling action sequences that simultaneously pull at the old heartstrings. 309 is a unique blast that you won’t want to miss, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!
Thank you to author Michael Shotter for this FREE Kindle copy of 309. And thanks to Goodreads for hosting the opportunity.
Very nicely done. Good story and flow, good characters to enjoy the ride with, good visual development, and an interesting twist at the end. All-in-all, a good read! Just a few editing issues, mainly with quotes (""), some of which may be from the conversion to the Kindle format?? Nice, simple cover. Recommended read.
Jamming out to great tunes while heading out across the country in an all out wtf is happening adventure. This book brings it all from sci-fi to self exploration. Set in the modern world but left with only nostalgia and a tape deck too keep the memories alive.
Disclaimer: I read this as a judge for SPSFC#3, as part of the Wayward Stars team. However, the following is my own personal review and does not reflect on the team's score.
309 represents some of the good and some of the bad of science fiction for me personally. It's all very subjective and I'm sure people will argue with me (I've seen reviews saying just that) but this is how I saw 309. The plot is good and was extrapolated well. However, I feel that some things let it down to the point that it felt a bit wasted. I would have loved to have some things taken a bit further on (the alien invasion felt a bit shaky and had a lack of purpose) but in general, the idea of made superheroes ("cometh the hour" etc) was great. The characters were interesting in themselves, all of them having their own quirks. These were all things that kept me invested until the end.
However, there were some issues that sometimes put that in doubt and it mainly concerned the writing. I felt that the prose and the dialogue were a bit stilted. Both was quite dry and basic, which left it feeling like a news report but without the sensationalism needed to convey an alien invasion. The dialogue, especially, brought me out of the story several times. I think this was the use of "Friend" in general speech, as in "Hello friend, how are you?". It just seemed like such an odd word to use that I found myself fixating on that and not really paying attention to the rest of it. It may be a me thing but it really affected my enjoyment of this book. As did the technological info dumps. I can see why they were there but they felt very heavy footed at times.
The ending was also a personal upset but not for the normal reasons. It was the big climate, the huge finale but it felt very rushed. I also expected to feel a bit more emotional after a certain event (no spoiler!) but it didn't seem to have the desired affect. I just didn't think that the prose managed to convey it well enough to give the tug needed. It is a shame but the events leading up to it where intriguing enough to get me there.
I hate to say it, especially concerning self-published work, but I feel that with a decent editor, this could be a really good book. As it is, it's not there for me and I doubt I would carry on with any further sequels.
