A romantic slowburn about breaking away from the traumatic experiences that raise us, finding oneself in darkness, and sexy vampires.

Morgan Dante has done it again 😌🤌

Witch Soul functions almost like a coming-of-age story with Millie’s character. We meet the young witch during a surprise prison escape and the bulk of the story is wrapped in her inner turmoil regarding the entity that lives in her blood and constantly breaking away from her mother’s abuse.

It’s a dark story that carries that Morgan Dante hope all throughout.

Millie’s chemistry with León is palpable and it’s always lovely to see the physical embodiment of “I love my wife” in all his fabulous glory.

I’d stay in this universe with this group for forever if I could.

CW: recurring references to abusive parent, brief homophobia (including slur usage), brief fatphobia, brief explicit sexual content

A wondrous sequel, we return to the world of A Flame in the Night with Millie, an overly anxious witch with a sarcastic inclination, who is a pure delight to read and follow along. Set almost 100 years after the first book, we are now in today—where monsters and Doctor Who reruns coexist. Despite a sudden change in setting, it works well and pairs with the internal anxieties Millie faces throughout the novella. Dante expertly shows a matured and changed version of Leon and Claire, but never sacrifices their earnest personalities. I enjoyed seeing more of the two—and even the few hints of what Matthias is up to (cooking hah! Love it).

A more internal read with a lot of characters connecting over shared and differing experiences, Witch Soul was about accepting yourself and personal change—and, of course, one very surreal sex scene. If you want a captivating read about witches and monsters, you’ll be sure to have a good time if you pick up Witch Soul.

I genuinely finished this book and went, "Where's the rest of it?" The ending felt sudden and not necessarily unsatisfying but it did feel like the author went 'that'll do' and gave up.

Of course I was glad to see my goobers again, would have loved some more Matthias content but soup king is fine. I desperately needed more Léon and Claire content in my life so I'm glad I received. I love the little fun fact that they have matching frilly floor length nightgowns, that's so real.

I personally found the Millie and Léon relationship to be hella rushed but Léon is known for these kind things (And the author does primarily write short novels so I can understand what's going on). The gaunt storyline was also oddly pushed to the side? I feel like their is definitely a universe where Morgan Dante sat on this book for a little longer and we got 300pg+ book where the relationships we're fleshed out and a cure for the gaunts were actually found but slay.

★ 3.5 ★

Witch Soul is the cozy second installment of the New Age Gothic series, and we see the return of the beloved cast of characters from A Flame in the Night, as well as the introduction of a new pov character and a new addiction to the relationship dynamic!

I loved getting to meet Millie, and I also loved seeing the way her dynamic blossomed with Léon! I also really enjoyed the lore behind her family and their fallen angel. Millie’s character was a lot of fun to get to know, and I really appreciated the discussions of queerness and disability surrounding her!

Ultimately though, I think that Millie, her angel, and Léon were the driving forces of this book. It was very character focused, and I had trouble seeing a coherent line of plot. There were some points that I didn’t mind it, but others where it seemed to drag a bit more for me, and I think that the huge jump in time between books 1 and 2 also had a factor to play in my ability to get into the book. Although I think it was super interesting to have such a big time jump before adding a new person to the dynamic, and it’s really fun to get to see how the vampires react in the modern world, I feel like there was a lot of context that went over my head and gave me a bit of whiplash at the beginning just because of how different the state of the world and what the MCs know about the supernatural is.

I really liked reading about Millie connecting with her powers and her witch soul, but outside of that, the plot didn’t really capture my attention very much, I think I probably would have gotten more enjoyment out of this is it was in the context to a larger work, because we’re (re)introduced to the love-interests, but outside of Léon, we don’t see much interaction or development, and the story seemed to just... end.

I still absolutely adored these characters and this story, and I’m definitely going to be waiting eagerly for the next installment of this series, because I loved Millie and I’m excited to see how she grows to interact with the others, but this was definitely a very different read from A Flame in the Night.

Huge thanks to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I enjoyed this book thoroughly! It was so fun to return to the world of New Age Gothic, and Millie won me over very quickly. She was a really intriguing character, and I can easily see how she would fit with Léon, Claire, and Matthias, while still being able to stand on her own.

It's not that she ever doubted her womanhood, but she doubted her ability to ever fit into a box without disappointing someone or causing conflict, and she was never sure of the line between envying another woman and wanting to sleep with her.

I also really enjoyed the plot of this book. Where the first book was more character driven than anything, this is more plot driven that the first. There's a lot of intriguing worldbuilding going on, and I can't wait to learn more about the gaunts and Azoth and witch powers in the next book. I'd also love to read about how the supernatural world was revealed to the "mundane" world - there's so much hinted at in this book that would make for fantastic side stories, and I can't wait to see where Morgan Dante goes with this world.

Often, people are monsters, and so, monsters are people. Monsters can fight. Monsters can protect. Monsters can love.

While this was mostly a slowburn romance between Léon and Millie, we also got intriguing looks into his relationship with Matthias and Claire. I'd love to know more about their relationship in the 100 or so years between A Flame in the Night and Witch Soul, but even as it stands, it's a fun and cute relationship between the three of them, and Millie fits very well into their relationship I felt.

Léon is fabulous as always, and it's always fun to see how much he loves Claire and, now, Matthias. This book is significantly less smutty than the first one, but it adds a lot in terms of story, and while i wouldn't have minded the smut, I didn't miss it either.

Overall, this was just a rollicking romp that I finished very quickly! 4/5 stars for this one for me!

Unfortunately, this book wasn't really as good as the first in the series. I think it was mainly because I didn't get along well with the protagonist, who I found to be a bit irritating and immature at times. Although it could be argued that there wasn't much of a plot for the previous book, there were still events that occurred which felt like it justified the character progression, and the writing was really nice at times. However, "Witch Soul" not only lacked a strong narrative but wasn't quite as impressive with the language, which was a shame. I think had the story focused more on the hereditary demonic possession, and what distinguished Mille as a witch beyond her rudimentary powers, I may have felt more engaged. Instead I felt like at times the book was straining to make the reader feel empathetic by throwing various issues upon her that were never explored beyond brief references, which seemed slightly lazy.

Millie is great. I was particularly happy about the autistic representation.

Unfortunately, I didn't like part 2 any better than the first book.

In the beginning the description is very detailed, but the tempo increases and everything remains vague - which would actually be a nice change, but somehow it all seems so trivial to me.

The last chapters seem rather randomly thrown together without a common thread.
This is where I got really confused for a moment and kept turning back because I thought I skipped pages.

I'm really sorry for using such harsh words, I just don't know how else to describe it.

I think this book would do well with a few more pages and smoother transitions.

Of course, this is just my personal taste - I'm happy for every person who likes the book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you for your trust!

The cover of this book is gorgeous! I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. I was so happy to go back into this world as I absolutely adore the first book in the series.
This book takes place almost a hundred years after book one. A new character Millie Byron is introduced and we are reading the story from her perspective. She is the kind of witch that has soul-witch inside her that fuels her power. But Millie isn't able to access her power. She escapes prison with the help of her exes. As she doesn't want to cause trouble for them she runs off in the middle of the night to a cosy tavern. It is there that she finds the ever so charming Léon. He offers her help but they are quickly trapped together while on the run from a monster.
I was really intrigued to see this new character and how she would fit in with the characters from book one. Let's just say Millie won me over very quickly. I am excited to see more from her for sure! Especially her interactions with Léon were the best, they do really fit together.
I definitely recommend this series if you are looking for a fun vampire poly sex positive book.

I loved Millie instantly. A character that is intensely self aware, often to her own detriment, but has difficulty changing and isn't even sure she wants to. Loved the lore of how witches are made, and how specifically she is made. The angel sex was *chef's kiss* WITCH SOUL has built beautifully on what was established in A FLAME IN THE NIGHT, focusing on the characters still but also widening the lens to include more of the world they live in (I'd love side stories of how the main throuple lived in times leading up to now) to include more of vampire lore via Gaunts and how they've also impacted the setting. Not as much heat as its predecessor but I don't consider that a loss as there is so much room for potential growth in sequels and I looks forward to how relationships evolve in change with each iteration.

Unfortunately I liked this less than the first one, and the lack of editing is even more apparent; obvious things, like doubled up commas (on the first page!), sentences not beginning with capitals, and some conversations that felt like they'd been re-arranged but not re-read for sense. I'm not a person to get annoyed at small errors, but it felt like there was a lack of care with the manuscript that is a bit frustrating for a published, paid book.

Story-wise it packs a lot in to a very small page count. I like the returning characters from the first one, they're fun to see 100 years on, while Millie's exes didn't get much of a chance to make an impression. The witch soul idea and Millie's demon are quite cool ideas, but overall I think this book really could have used another draft or an editor to help bring out its strengths.

I received this as an ARC so I will not be spoiling this but overall I thought it was beautiful. Once again, the authors vivid imagery and her prose is stunning and transports you to that world. Her character work is phenomenal. Although this takes place much later than the events of the first book, the characters are still full of life, , verve, and deliciously witty. Once this is released, I’ll be able to give a much more in-depth review but overall it’s a wonderful sequel to the first book. Highly recommend reading!

I really enjoyed this one, although not quite as much as the first book. It felt quite N/A which isn't always my style but was still fun to read.

It felt a bit rushed at times but I still had a lot of fun reading it. I enjoyed the character dynamics and am now honestly just desperate for a third book that resolves the uncertainty at the end of this book.

I was hesitant about a new main character but I actually quite enjoyed Millie.

Overall, this was a fun sequel but I definitely don't feel as strongly about it as the first book.
