It strikes me as a problematic oversight that I've never read "The Prince and The Pauper" but have watched many an adaptation on TV and am now reading a shonen manga version of the tale. I really do need to read that book one of these days.

That being said, this seems to be a fun interpretation. Astro (I know, I know. It's a fighting manga. Go with it) is a young orphan with a home full of even younger orphans who make up a ragtag family he's fiercely devoted to. After a run-in with a foreign (as in, from off-planet) noble, he catches the eye of Prince Barrage, who proposes that the pair switch places. This turns out to be a mixed blessing for Astro, as it does take care of the question of how to care for his family - but it also forces him to expand his definition, as the prince is charged with bringing peace to the land.

The art in this manga is really expressive, and I think the story has a good flow, even if it's a little on-the-nose at times. (Yes, Astro, we KNOW family is the most biggest, bestest, importantest thing in the whole world and people belittling it makes you angry. WE KNOW) but it's cute, and a little bit dark, and overall a pretty enjoyable manga. It helps knowing that the manga is limited in length - only two volumes, meaning it's not a big investment of time.

Paperback Book Copy bought from Amazon.
Language: English
Length: 192 Pages

I had bought both book Vol. 1 And Vol. 2, from Amazon a year ago.

I got my nephew to read this series as well.

But I ended up reading volume 2 first. Lucilly, I remembered to go back and read Vol 1. Its a nice story and had me rooting for Astro as Prince Barrage.

Astro is a real family man that cares about others and their family. Technically its a found family and it makes me sad how lonely he was before he met those kids. And now they live happily while trying to get by in life and troubles what may come.

He puts his all into protecting others and is such a sweet guy. Astro definetly has the qualifications of becoming a great King one day.

Plus, the orphan (abandoned) kids he collects and takes care of make such a cute family. They maybe poor and in tough times. But, they are just adorable as a family with Astro as their big bro looking out for them. Especially, that part with the repayment about how they repay each other back for doing so much for them was so heartfelt.

Astro gives me Deku vibes. His body moves on instinct to defend others and what's right. He truly cares.

It's a quick read with only two volumes to this series, but it is definetly worth the read. If you want to root for an mc as uplifting as Astro.

2.5 stars for a fantasy-ish sci-fi about a street kid who takes the place of the runaway prince he resembles to protect his country (well, his family of orphaned kids, really, but it works out to the same thing) from marauding aliens and brigands, using the prince's heirloom bracelet that transforms into an unbeatable trident weapon when its wearer recognizes an enemy.
Very similar in look and feel to My Hero Academia, with a theme of 'anything for family' taking the place of the common 'the power of friendship' manga trope.
An okay quick action read, though not too memorable, and only 2 volumes long so it's not a huge commitment. Fairly creepy how, in the meet-the-manga-studio-crew afterword, the author introduces his assistants by their name and...fetish?! Eww, Mineta, stick to favourite foods or hobbies or something ,:S

Content concerns: no nudity/sex, no alcohol/drugs, no swearing that I remember; fantasy violence (sword/spear fights, etc), people taken prisoner or enslaved by aliens; a few not-very-graphic deaths (nothing you wouldn't see in a Saturday morning cartoon)

Been quite some time since I’ve read a manga, and I’m glad I decided to start this one. Barrage has a lot to offer the reader.

The art, while busy, is excellent and character design is unique. Story-wise it resembles a version of the Prince and the Pauper, but only somewhat in my opinion. I’m highly enjoying that the story is more than just a re-telling in a different setting.

Overall, this one has heart (of gold when considering Astro… Barrage… Bartro). A fun read with more to come. Looking forward to seeing the second (and final) volume of the series.

Really liked this one! It's nice to read something else other than My Hero Academia by the author. I like the story so far and eventhough it should've been quiet rushed (because the manga consists of only 2 volumes), the story building has a very nice pace and the characters already got a good amount of depth. A really good work so far.

A fun story about a boy switching places with a prince and becoming heir to the throne. The story had a good flow, it had a bit of humour in it as well as action scenes, and there's a nice theme of what family means (not the main point of the story). Barrage is a two-volume series only, which is a shame because I would've loved for it to be longer! I recommend this series to everyone!

I read this volume because I saw it was by the author of My Hero Academia. Barrage was just good plain fun, full of action and humor. I enjoyed reading it, but the story didn't stick with me the way some other manga series have. The worldbuilding and characters needed more fleshing out. Overall, fun but not a favorite.

This series wasn't all that impressive to me. You can see Horikoshi finding his feet, but this lacks the charm of My Hero Academia. The character designs are super busy and it makes the art cluttered.

More of a 3.8 stars than a full 4.

Super fun read!! Horikoshi’s a brilliant mangaka, as far as I’m concerned, but this is definitely before he understood core components of story-growing—or at least how to bring things about more naturally.

But I LOVED reading this!!

Interesting storyline, poor execution in writing. The world building was very lackluster. Also hard to get into knowing that the series was dropped after 2 volumes.
