No Macedonian has commanded this old language so masterfully; no Maco has moved and stirred the Macedonian spirit, quite like Kosta Apostolev Solev.

We know Kosta as Kočo (nickname of Kosta) and by the surname Racin (which he named himself after the woman he loved, Rahilka Firfova-Raca). Kosta's first collection, Antologija Bola (Anthology of Pain) was written while he was a Partisan for Jugoslavija during WWII. He was not allowed to write poems, especially in his native Macedonian. A true poet, Kosta stole 31 notecards from his Serbian commander, and penned 31 poems to his beloved Rahilka, in his own blood.

A committed Communist, Kosta observed the inhumane working conditions of the Macedonian peasantry, and sought to raise class consciousness amongst the agonized peoples. Thus, he penned Beli Mugri (White Dawns) 12 lyrical, intense, heartbreaking, but triumphant poems about the harsh conditions that ravaged the souls of many.

An accurate and poetically justified English rendering has yet to be published. However, I will be publishing my translations soon on Substack. If anyone wants to read Kosta in English, feel free to message me.

Simply haunting. The book that got me interesting in poetry. Macedonian Socialist Realism at its best. A genre that unfortuanately hasn't be developed as it should've due to the revisionist character of the Yugoslav Federation.
