Ok, let me first start off by saying that I really enjoy this authors other work (Candy Shop and Juicy.
When i started this book I wasnt sure what to expect from the title. I thought that the story itself was a really good one it was original and it wasnt like any story i have read before. Cocoa is a young girl who grows up with a mother whose addiction is stronger than the love she has for her own child. Growing up Cocoa had to deal with a whole lot of things due to her mothers drug addiction and she had to grow up faster than she needed to. The only thing Cocoa actually wanted in life was the love of the woman who gave birth to her, but that just seems to never be coming for Cocoa who just cant get a break. Her life was hard, she did things she felt she had to do to survive out there in the world. Cocoa goes through so much drama that you wouldnt even believe, but you would have to read it to see all the things that happened to her.
If i were to just base my review on the story i would give it a solid 4 because again the story was a unique, but because when I do reviews i take everything into consideration I had to give it a 3.5. The reason I give the book this is because it had quite a few errors. Errors such as wrong tense at some points it was 3rd person like it had already happened and then at other points it was like someone was telling the story for her and sometimes it was in the same sentence an example was (when she's turns) and should have been when she turned. This made the flow of the book inconsistent in many areas. Something else was the wrong word usage such as here and hear. I also felt toward the end was a little rushed I would have liked it to be explained why one chatacter at the ended acted the way she did all of a sudden.
Other than that i enjoyed the storyline I wish it would have been fixed up a little so that i could have given it a higher rating but I will still continue to support this author and if you are looking for a book with a good story line then this is one.
I give this book 3 stars because it did keep my interest from start to finish. I feel like it could have been a 5 star read if only it didn't have so many typos and misused words throughout the book. The further I read the more distracting they became but I pushed through and tried to stay with the story. This was the first book that I have read from this author and she is quite the story teller! Nicety pulled on my heartstrings in the beginning and I really felt for Coco! Poor girl! She survived her crack addicted mother, the men in her mother's life, bullies, Drew, Dirty, Cassie and James, and Sin. It just seemed like she couldn't catch a break! She would come up only to fall hard! The biggest twist of the book was the game and I truly didn't see the ending coming! I really feel like the ending was rushed and would have like to see things played out a little differently. I'm left to ponder what happens to Coco, her unborn, Star, Treach, and her father's memoirs. I'm in need of a book two!
