"My village had become the home of 'the murder farm' and I couldn't get the story out of my mind. With mixed feelings, I went back. The people I met there were very willing to tell me about the crime. To talk to a stranger who was nonetheless familiar with the place. Someone who wouldn't stay, would listen, and then go away again."The novel narrates the story of a multiple murder of the Danner family at an isolated Bavarian farm called Tannöd in the 1950s. The points-of-view of the victims, the witnesses and the perpetrator are intertwined in 39 short passages. Through these largely separate testimonies, the reader gradually builds a complete picture of the events that lead a rural family, headed by a tyrannical, abusive father, to all be brutally murdered.
