So many painful backstories on this volume :’)

I’m not too attached to Shizuka as she only appeared since the previous volume, but I respected her bravery for running away from a messed up life and admired her courage to give herself up when the Roppo Ichiza gang had to fight to protect her. Her backstory was horrible, and I’m glad Kanji helped her become a singer and she befriended Tsubaki too.

Oh boy, Tsubaki fighting in heels? So darn cool, I’d say ❤️‍🔥 and I loved seeing the twins fighting in sync—I want more of them!

And as much as I wanted to hate the villain gang in this volume, I could not really do it to the full extent; in the end, they’re kids with harsh upbringing, having nothing good in their lives. I love that after all the bloodied punches, Tsubaki knelt down and urged Suzuri to live a better life. He was adamant to help Suzuri, knowing full well how bleak life was without being able to have something to love and dream about. Tsubaki’s truly a precious one 😔💗

I feel that girl. I dunno about y'all, but I think she was very brave to surrender herself like that. Call it stupid and all, but brave nonetheless. I know this isn't some seinen/ H, but look... A rich, old, ugly guy "buys" her. She of all ppl should know what kinda future awaits her. Despite all that, she doesn't want the only people who showed her happiness pay the price for it. As long as she stays there, I doubt if the other gangs will stop tryna take her back. It ain't happily ever after if you continuously see the man you love get hurt over and over tryna protect you. If she’s running to the brawl trying to help, then yes, she’s stupid. But she came to stop the fight once and for all, then that’s really logical. Everyone ever being a heavy burden for others will choose to act like her. Her relationship with the bar guys is not that deep since they’ve just met recently and she’s always on the receiving end, that’s so damn stressful. Just think back on how many chapters it took for Sakura to finally rely on his friends.

The fact that Tsubaki can fight in heels is soooo cool, i barely can stand on them. XD The twin's are fighting so damn well, they're so in sync and it's freaking awesome to see it
Queen Tsubaki, MOTHER!!!!! I am at your mercy!!!

And those boy's life That's kinda sad. It happens in real life too, parents are to blamed for having kids even if they don't have the capacity/means to raise them. When the only feeling you've ever known was hunger, getting preached by dreams and love feels like a luxury too. A passion will never fill an empty stomach. But also giving up on a dream will never fill an empty heart. It's two sides of the same coin. I understand their pain and suffering but as Tsubaki said we all are different and we all are going through something different just because someone wears good clothes doesn't mean they're not suffering or just because someone is smiling doesn't mean they're happy. As well as their suffering doesn't justify what they're doing it's wrong in every way.

When i started reading this manga i didn't expected it to be this deep, especially for a shonen. the amount of amazing perspective it brings to the table is actually insane.

"That's a good thing. That's what I wanted. Everyone can eat their fill...and everyone will get along. That's all I wanted. It's good. This is...good. This is the only path we can walk...regardless of who we have to take from to make it happen."

When I say I cried during the fight between Tsubaki and Gravel's leader, I mean Satoru Nii is once again aiming to make this series the Power of Friendship: Shounen Manga Edition. And I say that as the highest of compliments. This volume almost entirely consists of the fight between Roppo Ichiza/Furin and Gravel, yet it still has the time for both awesome fight choreography and the acknowledgement of the suffering at the heart of this battle.

Nii has never been one for subtlety and this volume is no different, especially in regards to Shizuka and Gravel's leader, Suzuri. I really enjoyed the Nii's commentary on poverty and violence. I was not expecting a topic like that to be a plot point in a shounen series. It's still unclear who put this bounty on Shizuka's head and for what reason, but as the fight goes on, it almost becomes a moot point. The bounty becomes her punishment for desiring a better life; for trying to be something that she is not. Suzuri is her guilt and societal pressure manifested to come drag her back to reality. But this is not to say Suzuri doesn't have his own issues.

As always, I like how the fight progresses from an all out brawl to a favorite theme of this series: two characters communicating with their fists. It's nice to see Sakura still learning from his fights with Shishitoren and KEEL. It seems this fight will also bring to conclusion themes Tsubaki's appearance introduced, mainly learning to love yourself as you are and, by extension, loving what you want to do. Passion and love are vital for true strength.

“If only I was stronger”…

ME CAEN GENIAL.

I find it interesting how Sakura is always the one who holds Suo back. I think most people who haven't read the manga would assume Sakura would be the one needing to be held back...

Sakura continues to be one of my favorite MC's in anime/manga. To me, he's not just a tsundere. He has more character and depth than just that...

Anyway, this volume was great. A few cheesy lines, but the story is still interesting to me.

I hope this all gets animated in season 2. The twins were also pretty cool.

ch 75
sometimes you have to lose i hope that gets explored more
and i cannot be mad at shizuka for wanting to help when nirei did the same thing a couple chapters back and no one was calling him a dumb bitch hmm

ch 76
okayyy tsubaki being the great older sister

ch 77
usage of twins in a fight is unique can't wait to see that animated

ch 78
fighting in heels is CRAZY

ch 79
tsubaki putting on makeup which makes them stronger and which makes them fight better yeppp

ch 80
tsubaki talking about their love for shizuka ahhh <3 i hope we get more female characters down the road

ch 81
ok damn why does every "bad" guy get such a sad backstory like even this suzuri guy (still waiting for suo btw)
valid tho bc who wants to hear about love and friendship when you're literally starving
umemiya's philosophy of fights being a convo is everything to me

ch 82
what a kind ending for the gangs. ik not everyone likes how the enemies who are trying to beat up furin and co are then forgiven bc the readers don't forgive that easily, but this is fiction. it's easier for me as a reader to sympathize when given both sides of the story even if our main characters were hurt. (reminds me of AOT when gabi went through pretty much the same thing as eren, but everyone hates her and loves eren. just bc we had so long with him and we barely knew her + she killed sasha). all that to say, while irl i'm not so easy to fogive and forget, this is fiction where we can explore ideas in manageable ways, including kids with nothing at all fighting for something to grasp onto.

OK, so I wasn't sure what this fight segment would lead to going in. I knew a few things going in:
A) Tsubaki was going to win no matter what since this is her first debut fight and is a Four Kings leader.
B) We would get something from the Roppo Ichiza, either fighting style, dynamics, or a secret third thing.
C) Sakura would learn something.

*Spoilers from here* !!!!!!!!!!!

A) Tsubaki did kick major ass while taking some blows that would seriously hurt and then going, "Not as bad as being closeted" LMAO very good. love. Besides that? Fights are conversations, and the conversation held felt really good. I say things in this series are important a lot, but they cover very relevant topics and *are* tackling real world issues! Like poverty and what can happen as a result of major job market crashings in cities that rely heavily on certain pillars. It shows what happens growing up in it and that some people do what they can. Things aren't black and white, Gravel isn't a villain but a result of doing what you can to keep afloat.
B) Honestly, it was pretty chill from Roppo Ichiza's end. They were set on the goal of protecting Shizuka no matter the cost, which...
C) Sakura was kinda right! Letting your fighters down in order to confirm their goal of the fight is stupid. I actually had thought Kanji was in his 20s, but he's 18? Makes sense, that was a stupid call. I respect he wants his not-girlfriend to be safe, but damn bro. You're really gonna let your team you lead fall?

The first half of this volume had me a little disinterested because it was very fight heavy and followed the more lackluster vol 9 to boot, but it eventually reeled me right back in!

As always, what I find so compelling about this series is the characters. The mangaka is especially good at giving the antagonists an interesting and unique enough backstory that it makes you not only understand the characters, but also root for them to be better. This volume is just another prime example of that.

The leader of Gravel is ultimately a very interesting character to me. He’s a prime example of someone who comes from rough circumstances but still has enough heart that he wants to help the people around him (he’s just going to do it in a not so wholesome way). He’s jaded with life and is afraid of wanting anything because he can hardly count on having what he needs.

Suzuri’s confrontation with Tsubaki leads to Tsubaki genuinely wanting to help him after understanding his situation. Still, with that offer of a helping hand, Suzuri’s first question is about his crew. He doesn’t want to be “saved” on his own. He wants to know his group will be good too, and I think that’s beautiful 🥺

Ultimately, I’m gonna keep loving this series because it’s about boys from different walks of life who might do bad things, but there’s a chance of redemption. So far, no one has been irredeemable. You can continue to dislike characters, but you can’t say any of them are entirely good or bad. Those are the kind of characters I’m always going to love following!

Another batch of thugs getting the concepts of love and friendship pounded into them 🤭 TBH this didn’t make a lot of sense to me - why send SO many guys after a single poor girl that apparently spurned a “client”? And for the Gravels, I understand that they grew up in extreme poverty (though let’s be real, chronically malnourished kids do not get this strong) but as teens/young adults, is there a reason it never occurred to them to loom for jobs? For that matter, if they’re getting jobs as a team, do they still have zero money? This seemed like an odd thing, that they all had this idea that it was either be thugs for hire or starve.

notes:

- the 'i want to stay with everyone' reminded me sm of the sanji moment in wci when luffy asked him about his wishes
- tsubaki is so fucking cool. i love love love love him omg, the twins' fighting style is so cool too omg
- my heart is bleeding for suzuri. he fights to survive, fights to protect others. he's just full of suffering. the conversation between him and tsubaki - ahhh, it HURTS, in a good way. well done.

I was going to write a review of this book, but it's been a few days since I read the book. I couldn't write the review right away because it was late at night and I was very tired, then I had to work and then I kept forgetting to write it and other things came up. I finally decided to do it today, but when I sat down and write it, I didn't know what to say. I even flipped through the book and I couldn't remember what I had wanted to say about this book while I was and after reading it. So for now, I'm just going to leave it and if I remember, then I will update this.

More of our fighting arc from the last volume. The fights are really easy to see in the art, I appreciate that so much. I just don't really care about the enemy dude and we are now in the weeds of our deeper understanding of why he is the way he is and it seems like its cause he was lonely. But I am just not connecting as much with him. I don't really get why he is after the singer but I love Tsubaki!

Once again, I find it so amusing that these kids are in fighting gangs.

Some of the antagonists in this series are so creepy, so many props to the author for how creepy they've made these characters look and act. At the same time it's also really nice to see a positive outcome for the antagonists. They're not just beaten to a pulp and left to slink away in defeat, half the time the main crew reaches out a hand to help them become better.

Tsubaki fighting in heels!!! It was so fun to see Tsubaki and the twins fighting finally. And I love the way this series humanizes the “bad guys”. The villain in this arc was so sad and I’m so happy that Tsubaki and the others knew what to do to make things right. This was so touching.
