The Hartfield Mysteries #1

Manuscript for Murder

Rate this book
Alexa Hartfield. Author, local celebrity, fashion connoisseur. She chose Fairbury for its close proximity to Rockland, its small town atmosphere, and its low crime rate.

Then someone made her life a literary cliché. A mysterious accident with a light bulb sparked an interesting idea for her latest novel—and for Fairbury’s new serial killer. The first replication infuriated her. The second left an even worse taste in her mouth. The third blasted more than her self-confidence, and the fourth beat her down so far she’s considering giving up writing completely.

Who is killing Fairbury’s citizens, and furthermore, why and how are they using her novels to do it?

Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.

Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25

Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.

They’re for you.

When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.

Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.

And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”

Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached.
What does that even mean?
It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.

But I do.

And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.

I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.

Is there a way to sue for sleep loss? This book was too good, too suspenseful, and too intriguing for me to stop reading, and I must protest by reading the rest of the series. 😤😉

Only Chautona Havig could take a quirky, unique character living every author's secret dream and imbue it with such deep themes while making it still quite fun. My heart broke as each new layer of Alexa's backstory and complicated relationships was revealed. I enjoyed the detailed fashion and writing moments, everything about Joe, and how open-hearted Alexa was despite people's opinions of her.

The mystery was both haunting and fascinating (hence the stolen sleep), and there was one moment that really, really shocked me.

I'm not usually one for series, but I'm hoping to try the other books in this one.

CW: stalking, child neglect, chronic illness, negative family interactions, infertility and a hard backstory to it. Murders happen throughout the book in various ways, including an explosion, but with no graphic details.

I loved this! It took me a little bit to get into, and understand what was going on, but the story was well worth it and I enjoyed it very much. It kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end! I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

The best phrase I can think to describe this book is "disturbingly interesting." I found the idea of Alexa's writing preceding murders, but at the same time, there was that disturbing/sick element of the motive for the murders (which, I suppose is the purpose of murder mysteries--they aren't supposed to be enticing).

Spiritual content... I didn't catch a strong hint of a spiritual line throughout the story. And a few references Alexa made of "Lord" seemed used in vain--like she wasn't praying, but uttering it flippantly. That could be me misreading it. There were mentions of God and praying, but like I said, it wasn't a strong thread at all.

Clean content... this almost makes the "squeaky clean" category. There were a few minced oaths used as well as a reference to a "youthful rebellion" stage of someone getting pregnant out of wedlock. Nothing too detailed, but it's enough to lead your mind there.

Romance content... was not super strong in this book. There was a hint of a romance triangle, the aforementioned reference to pregnancy of wedlock, and some interested, but the romance felt natural and not overriding the entire book.

If you like a hint of mystery balanced with strong character-driven plots, you'll enjoy this book.

3.5 stars.

I really enjoyed the character of Alexa. She was mysterious, eccentric, independent, but also kind and generous and very real. This novel kind of reminded me of a modern day Agatha Christie book. My only complaint is that I felt like it was wrapped up too quickly and smoothly. I understand this is to be a series though so I'm sure there will be more to come from these great characters.

It's no secret that Chautona is one of my new favorite authors. When this book came up for tour with Celebrate Lit I had to jump at the chance to get it and also insist that Kristin from A Simply Enchanted Life did as well. I mean what is the point in having a book bestie without also sharing new favorite authors so they can love them too? While not my favorite Chautona noel thus far, 'Manuscript for Murder' has all the elements I need in a book. Defined characters to love (and despise), a mystery that keeps me a bit on edge, and satisfying conflict and drama and conversation. And...oh the ands I could add.

Alexa is so far from cliche' that she becomes cliche'. I love that about her. She's the embodiment of her own person down to the choice of wardrobe that brings so many questions and sometimes unwanted attention. While setting herself up to live and dress as she wishes (part of non-cliche') she draws attention to herself for her period-esque wardrobe that adds to her allure as a murder mystery writer (making her cliche'). Wardrobe aside she's like that in most every facet of her life. She makes her own choices, much to the dismay of her family, goes where she wants when she wants. And writes books about murder, and justice. And she explains it so much better than I ever could.

However, when her work in progress comes to life the rest becomes back drop and filler. I mean it's not even a book yet that someone can read and copycat, it's a work in progress that no one has seen. No. One. Well, outside the parts she writes while her cop friend Joe is hanging around the house. Writes sorta kinda maybe on purpose to try and create a diversion. Even that comes to life. The red herring becomes a herring, the what the gravy becomes grits and gravy it really just turns full circle and I don't have enough 'Fizzyisms' to cover it all. What does seem possible is and what seems impossible isn't and it wraps you up in a nice warm shawl and becomes and amazing book.

Why? I know you are begging for me to tell you why it's only 4 stars if I loved the book and adore the author. Well, it pains me to state this but I felt sorta lost through parts of the book. Hints were dropped that left me confused for long parts of the story which I felt like detracted from other things. I get why it was handled that way and I get that I'm frequently more confused than not. But... I feel like the way some things from Alexa's personal life was revealed throughout the book would almost have been better if the hints hadn't been dropped. And that things were hinted and and danced around that were never quite resolved for me. That's me though, not you. This book is an amazing mystery (and yes it did keep me guessing almost until the end) with all the things I never realized a murder mystery needed until I met Alexa.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by CelebrateLit. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

I have read almost every novel written by Chautona Havig. I can say that about several authors, but as much as I read, that doesn't add up to a large percentage. Either way, for the first time after finishing a novel by Ms Havig I had no idea how to write this review. I was suddenly stuck. This has happened before with other novels, but never ones by this author.

So I am going to use a review system some have suggested.

What did I like about this novel:

The first thing that came to mind as soon as I finished it was that Alexa and Joe had such chemistry and both of them seemed blind to that.

Second was the self confidence that Alexa always had...and parts just got stolen by an evil individual.

Third, was that as much as he took away parts of her, she did not relent in living her life and doing what she usually would do. At least for the most part.

Fourth, I loved her explanation as to the role of justice and how that relates to her novels.

What I didn't like:

The ending. Not because it ended. I didn't like who the person was that was behind this. Or maybe I totally got off track from the beginning from what seemed like a book group meeting and then became an individual with a vendetta. They just seemed to not coincide. (That is not usual for a book by this author, so as I suggested, the issue is most likely mine and a misunderstanding.)

For some reason the characters of Martinez and Darren really bugged me. Martinez is just clueless and why Varney puts up with him made no sense. Darren was kind and good for Alexa but at the end he seemed over eager and just bothered me.

Sometimes I felt the novel skipped around or I was missing pages, although I wasn't. Again, this may just be me.

Overall impression:

I really enjoyed this novel. I think I need to reread it again. I was struggling with a migraine, so that may have influenced some of the "issues" I had.

I love the character of Alexa, in general, as well as with Joe and the two kids down the way. I love her self confidence and just who she is as a person. I truly hope she doesn't stop writing or sharing her novels or changes genres.

I recommend this novel as the first in the series (I have read the others and loved them).

So go see if you can figure out who is creating all the mayhem in Fairbury, and beyond, and how they are imitating her writings almost exactly.

Let me start off by saying I’m not a big fan of murder mysteries. The idea has never appealed to me, and had I not read and enjoyed many of this author’s other books and been introduced to Alexa in other places, I probably wouldn’t have even tried this one.
I’m still not sure what I think. I liked Alexa for the most part. Sometimes I didn’t get her, but not many people do, I suppose. While some of the argument about why and how Alexa justifies writing books about murder made sense, there are other ways to show justice and truth prevailing without resorting to murder even of fictional characters. (This fact was left completely out.) And I didn’t like that it was implied that if she didn’t write murder mysteries that showed justice being down you’d only be left with Christian books that were syrupy sweet romances, or something like that.
And why must the moms of so many characters in books be either manipulative, controlling, or a mixture of both? I get that there are such people, but Alexa’s mom frustrated me. (I think she was supposed to.)
As for the mystery, I had the murderer pegged as soon as that person showed up in the book, and I pretty much had it figured out how it was done too, so there wasn’t much suspense (I am not a fan of suspense novels, so that was nice). The person who did it all under the very warped view that it was up to that individual to play God and teach Alexa how horrible she was, needed some serious help!

There were a few places that left me hanging and remained unresolved. I couldn’t tell if they had just been edited out because the book was "too long,” or if they were never there in the first place. I mean, I want to know WHY

Overall, this was an okay book. I’ll try the next in the series some time.
This was a Christian book, and it was clean.

Manuscript for Murder by Chautona Havig is first in the Hartfield Mystery series. Alexa Hartfield, mystery author extraordinaire, leads a very independent life, wears vintage clothes, and has been labeled an eccentric spinster. Living in a small town where crime pretty much consists of jaywalking, murders have begun occurring—murders that copy the stories that Alexa has just begun fleshing out on her computer! How could this happen? Who could be reading her manuscripts? Why is this evil happening to Alexa, making her feel violated and vulnerable? Should she quit writing so the murders will stop? Can Joe, the handsome and charming Fairbury police officer, help find the killer? Havig does a great job of keeping the culprit’s identity a mystery till the end of the book, which makes for a good suspenseful read. I loved Alexa’s confidence and self-awareness that allows her to see the needs of others, whether emotional or physical, and be willing to step out and meet them. The author has threaded a romantic tension throughout the story with two different potential suitors for Alexa. Will one of them win her heart and ease some of the loneliness she sometimes feels? As the book concludes, there is no cliffhanger ending, but there sure is an anticipatory feeling that the author has a lot more story to tell her readers about Alexa and her friends. I can’t wait to read the second book in the series, Crime of Fashion. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own. This review is part of a CelebrateLit blog tour.

Alexa is a larger than life character with her fondness for vintage clothes. Her quirky character is the force that keeps the narrative moving. In that sense, the novel is a character driven mystery. The motive for the murders and the murders themselves center on her. The murders would not be nearly as interesting had they not revolved around Alexa and her work.

There was quite a bit of halting romance woven throughout the narrative. I felt that aspect of the novel was a bit of a distraction from the mystery aspect. Another reason to definitely describe this novel as character driven.

The most interesting aspect of the novel for me was the discussion about Christians and the reading or writing of murder mysteries. I am an avid reader of mysteries and appreciated Alexa explaining why she, as a Christian, wrote novels about murder.

I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy a character driven mystery that has as much potential romance as it does mystery emphasis.

Manuscript For Murder by Chautona Havig is a Christian murder mystery which I really enjoyed. It had me guessing from the start - who was committing the parallel crimes? Once again I suspected many characters but failed to guess correctly.
The lead character is wonderfully eccentric in her dress but with a heart of gold. I immediately warmed to her as she spread goodness wherever she went. She wasn't holier than thou, she had a past but in Christ she was a new creation. I loved her kindness and her quirkiness. She reminded me of Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote.
I loved the references to Jane Austen who is the author of my all time favourite novel, Pride And Prejudice. References to other books and famous people were included too.
Manuscript For Murder despite being a murder mystery had a lightness of spirit to it - like a Hallmark movie in the middle of the afternoon.
A delightful and entertaining read.

I downloaded this book because it was called a Hartfield Mystery, and I wondered whether there was a Jane Austen connection. There was, in that the heroine sometimes likes to dress up in Regency period costume. The premise for the mystery is that as soon as the main character starts writing one of her mystery books, somebody, seemingly omnisciently, commits a crime in exactly the way described in her manuscript. One thing I didn't like about the book is that sometimes the narrative seemed patchy, for example, after a disaster had occurred, and it was unclear whether everyone was alright, the next scene was two characters having breakfast, as if nothing extraordinary had occurred.

When I consider that this is a Christian young adult murder mystery about a seriel killer (yeah lots of conflict for the reader!) I must confess that it was well written with interesting characters. I do have to say the when the conclusion arrived, it seemed a bit tossed together without an adequate buildup.

I pretty much expected to like this book before I even began to read it. Why? Because it’s written by the fabulous Chautona Havig, and I have yet to meet a book of hers I have not liked. This book was no exception to that rule – I liked it a lot! And as much as I would like to comment on the entire body of the book, my mind keeps coming back to one specific part.

Alexa is a no nonsense character. She did what she did, and quite frankly didn’t care about what others thought. Personally, I loved this about her. She was quirky – what person wears clothes from the past that are not in style and yet doesn’t care? What person will wear regency clothes after writing a book? (side note – I am now wondering if Chautona does this) She was not afraid to share her thoughts on things, and I have to be honest here. She reminded me of the very person who wrote about her.

About half way through the book someone questions Alexa and how she can claim to be a Christian, and yet write murder mysteries? I had to pause for a few minutes when I read this because I just could not get over the boldness of the character who asked the question. And yet, I wonder how many Christian fiction readers today might think the same thing? Alexa’s response was wonderful, and while the other character may not have understood, I got it loud and clear. Bravo Chautona Havig on including this in your novel. I hope readers who love murder/mysteries read this and are encouraged by it.

Aside from this, yes I enjoyed the story. I did not, however, enjoy the whodunit. I was really hoping for a particular character to be the offender because it would have changed some dynamics tremendously. (can’t say who because I don’t want to ruin it for you) Looking back and rethinking some of the scenes in my mind, I can see how it all came together. And really, don’t let this stop you from reading. This is simply my opinion on how I thought the storyline should go. You may simply love it as it is!

I hope mysteries lovers will check out this book. You’ll be glad you did! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Manuscript for Murder" by Chautona Havig is a Who did it book and the first in the series"The Hartfield Mysteries".

This book makes me wantt to read the rest in the series. The title definitely fits the story.

This story had me guessing at who the real murderer was and why right up till the last chapter, I was ok ------- did and it was because of this and that. Boy, was I wrong.

Ok, Maybe I liked the book because it was about an author's story being acted out in real life.

This story has plenty of suspects and even laugh out scenes, like ice cubes down characters shirts, we all have been in that scenario, right!

I loved Alexis's spirit of generosity.

This story also has a touch of romance ( clean) between the pages.

This story has it all murder, mystery, an author and children and a fan who is ill. Allthe elements of a good book.

But, I have to say one scene really had me almost in tears, thinking No, I can't finish the rest of this book. But I did finished it and no I cannot say anymore or I will be giving a spoiler alert.

One thing that really stuck out in this novel was the way she described the reason that she felt no guilt over writing murder novels and being a Christian. This was an important factor in the storyline. Ok, guess I will close the review because I find my thoughts wanting to type spoiler alerts. I will just say read the book and find out why!

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

I adore this author and it killed me (no pun intended) to give this book a two star. I have the pleasure of being in a facebook group with Chautona and she’s so sweet, funny and great.

But, I couldn’t force myself to love this book. I am a firm believer that it is impossible to love every book that you pick up. That’s what happened with this one. Would I read Chautona’s other stories? You betcha.

So, let me explain what I did and didn’t like about this book. I hope that I’m capable of expressing that while this was a two-star for me—it may be a five for you.

My biggest complaint was that Alexa’s wardrobe was its own character. Yes, her wardrobe. At first, I found Alexa’s love for quirky outfits to be an adorable character trait. In fact, I pictured her as a not so goth version of Abby Scuito—one of my favorite NCIS characters. But, the outfits became too much of a focus. I felt that they could have been written into a character guide as their own entity.

Second, some of the sentence structure confused me. It’s not that I’m an incompetent reader but there were times when I was completely lost. An example of this would be when a little boy is discussing Alexa’s pregnancy. I couldn’t distinguish that this was gossip as Alexa didn’t correct him in any way. So, imagine my surprise when pages later she’s popping a hydrocodone.

Last, I wanted to love Alexa. Again, I saw her as this quirky Abby-type but she was so overbearing that I had a hard time loving her. She was like—Crabby Abby. I tried so hard to force myself to adore her. I wanted to and it wasn’t for lack of trying. But, I couldn’t connect with her.

This story is well written and there is a certain Nancy Drew vibe that I did love. I’m interested in future installments to see if she grows on me because I loved Chautona’s humor. I just wasn’t clicking with Alexa.

Manuscript for Murder is the first book I've read by Chautona Havig, and I certainly hope to give some of her others a try.

There were several things I enjoyed about the book. Alexa Hartfield was an intriguing character to follow, lots of layers to get to know. The story jumped right into the mystery from early on, building up an strong interest level from the beginning. There were other fascinating characters as well, and getting to know them kept the story moving.

Then there were things that I didn't enjoy so much. The quirkiness of Alexa and her wardrobe was a fun part of who her character was. However, details of her obsession on occasion seemed to overshadow other elements of the story. There was a sense of "scattered-ness" in the story that sometimes made it hard to keep up with both details and people. Even the ending seemed rather scattered as the details of the mystery were tied up.

All in all, I consider the story worth my time spent reading, and I hope to read other books by Chautona. I would recommend this book if you enjoy light mystery with some unconventional characters.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for providing a copy of Manuscript for Murder. I was happy to share my thoughts in this review.

This is a smooth and captivating read that makes it easy for the reader to want to hang on through the myriad twists and turns! This whodunnit is decidedly challenging – the author provides precious few clues as to who is targeting Alexa and systematically doing away with Fairbury’s residents. You’ll be savoring each breadcrumb as you consider the means, motive and opportunity of the various suspects!

I was particularly intrigued by the protagonist’s explanation of why she, as a Christian woman, chooses to write murder mysteries (yes, you’ll have to read it yourself to discover her reasoning).

Although the ending initially felt a little rushed I realized my feelings were because I hadn’t wanted this book to end. I am grateful Chautona provided a smooth seque into the next in the Hartfield Mysteries series! Phew!

Another 5-star winner in this author’s wonderfully creative, inventive, original and always well-written oeuvre!

My favorite thing about this book is Alexa. She is such a great character that knows what she likes, is confident, and possess a courage in fashion I wish I could possess. This mystery hovers between a cozy and suspense, describing enough to give it a little edge while not going so far as to make it hard to sleep at night. For those of you who don’t like a lot of romance in your mysteries, you might like this one; there is some, but not overly so. My understanding is that it grows with the series.

I have to admit that it was hard for me to get into the story initially as is started slow and took awhile for someone to die (that’s such a morbid thought; I was sad someone didn’t die quicker). About halfway through I found myself really draw into the story and wanting to know how it all ended. The slower start is more typical of the first book in a series, but at the same time, some of you might tend to give up too early and miss a solid story; I encourage you to stick with it.

I received a digital copy of this book from the author/publisher for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.

The tiny town of Fairbury, sometimes compaired to Mayberry, is home to an author. Alexa Hartfield spends her days writing murder mysteries and dressing in all kinds of vintage clothing. Frankly, that sounds absolutely awesome to me. However, Alexa's easy going, predictable life is being altered.

I have a connection to Alexa with people being shocked that such a lovely Christian woman spends her days whipping up murders. Ah, so much that people don't understand sometimes. With someone bent on destroying her, are they trying to silence her underlying messages or are they simply targeting her because they can?

I found Manuscript for Murder to be an inserting story. It occasionally jumped about a bit, but it wasn't anything that I can't follow or enjoy. I appreciated the clothing and the characters in this book.

My copy came from Celebrate Lit. My thoughts and opinions are my own. I have left this review of my own free will. God willing, I will get to read more of Havig's books.

My favorite thing about Chautona Havig's books is the unique themes and characters. As always, her characters are strong, likable, and a little bit quirky. As a writer, I connected with Alexa on a deeper level. Although, I'd never be able to wear the types of clothes she wears. I'm not normally a mystery lover because I have no patience to wait until the end, but I loved the way she designed this book.

I struggled to put it down and didn't want it to end. I would've liked to spend more time immersed in Alexa's fictional world. A small amount of romance made my swoony heart happy without taking away from the plot.

I loved the book, but I did struggle with small amounts of head hopping. If I wasn't a writer, I wouldn't have noticed it. I didn't feel it detracted from the book.

I highly recommend this book and give it 5/5 stars.

I first read Manuscript for Murder about a year ago. I don’t normally read murder mysteries, but because Chautona Havig wrote this book, I decided I would read it. I was not disappointed—this is another good book by a good author. Yes, there are murders, but the book doesn’t focus on them. Instead, the main focus is the relationships between Alexa and the other characters. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her learning to know Joe, the cop and Lorie, the sick girl in Chicago. Some of the conversations were quite thought-provoking, like the one about why Alexa dressed the way she did (“I wear what I like when I like, and I don’t worry about what anyone else likes or wears.”) The conversation about why she, as a Christian, would write murder mysteries, was quite good, too. If you enjoy Christian fiction that makes you think, give the Hartfield Mysteries a try. If you want to know more about the book, my longer review is here.

I wanted to give this 4 stars out of author loyalty, but it was probably a 3 star story for me.
I've loved Chautona's other books, but I was underwhelmed by this one. This is the first of her mysteries that I've read, and it felt much too obvious and much too scattered. I had the mystery figured out in the first quarter of the book. Boo!
The reactions of the characters to the events around them were apathetic and unrealistic, and events that needed to be explained happened with no explanation and a calm acceptance by the characters of things that didn't make sense without more context.
Mysteries are my favorite, and while I know that not every author is an Agatha Christie, the mystery angle of this story left much to be desired. I'll definitely read her other mysteries but I'm hoping they are better than this one.

I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story as I was a little confused as to what was going on, but once I did, I had a hard time putting it down. I was intrigued by what was happening and wanted to know who was doing it and how. The story is told from the view point of several characters (some more than others): An unnamed "stalker" (for lack of a better word), Alexa Hartfield, Lorie Thorne, Darrin Thorne, Jordan Freidan. I look forward to reading more Hartfield Mystery books in the future.

I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received.

A thriller read, grab your magnifying glass and lets be on our way, Dear Watson. I love Alexa and how she is brave to wear vintage clothing not caring what others think. I wish I was like that, I mean past eras clothing were so cool. Someone is able to access what she writes before anyone else even knows what she wrote. Creepy, (shivers)!! Shhhh, tip-toe through these pages and be aware!! Be very Aware!!
Great read!

Blessings,

This is a wonderful start to a new mystery series. I love Alexa. I love her different choices in dress and her great attitude. This is a fun murder mystery with a bit of romance. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. I really enjoy that she is a writer and from a small town. I received an ebook copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

A clean and entertaining story with engaging characters and a great plot. Alexa writes murder mysteries and someone is obsessed with getting her to stop writing those kinds of stories. Add in several other people of interest who muddy the waters, one cop who is inept and one who is good at his job and does his best to keep Alexa safe. I couldn't figure out who the killer was until right before it was revealed.

The first book in the Hartford mysteries series.

Alexa Hartford is a very successful author of crime books. She’s quirky, has a love for retro clothes, and is an all round good hearted soul. So when murders that are akin to the plot of her new, and as yet, unpublished author, the race is on the find the culprit. With a close circle of friends, she’s struggling to think who might be reading her work, and more worryingly, acting the plot out.

Alexa is working on her newest mystery book, but every time the serial killer commits a new murder a copycat murder is happening in her small town. How is someone learning what she is writing and reusing this as a muder scenario? Can Alexa discover what is happening before more murders take place?

Quick, easy to read murder mystery.

Once again, engaged

Once again I have become engaged with a character! After running into Alexa in previous books, it has been fun getting to know her. A book of mystery and maybe a romance in the making.... On to the next in the series.....
