This is the final part of the series which started with the Fifteen Year Old Wife. It tells the difficulties and trials faced by Maria with her two sons who are now grown up. The elder son wants to make an unsuitable marriage and the younger son develops a life threatening spinal tumour.
All three books were banned under communism for their portrayal of "bourgois" life and religious sentiments
