Don’t fear the army of genetically engineered perfect killers. Fear the cripple who leads them.
An alpha empath, Danyael Sabre is powerful, rare, and coveted, even among the alpha mutants who dominate the Genetic Revolution. Betrayed by his friends and abandoned to a life sentence in a maximum-security prison, Danyael receives freedom and sanctuary from an unlikely quarter—the Mutant Assault Group, an elite mutant task force within the US military. Physically crippled and emotionally vulnerable, Danyael succumbs to the warmth of friendships and the promise of love he finds within their ranks.
Friendship and love, however, demand his loyalty, and Danyael rises to the challenge of training and leading the assault group’s genetically modified super soldier army. The super soldiers are faster and stronger than the military’s human soldiers; their animal instincts spur ferocity and fearlessness in battle. Who is the perfect weapon, though, the super soldiers or Danyael, the alpha empath, who can, with a touch, heal or kill?
Adversaries swarm like vultures around carrion; the pawn is once again in play. The threads of betrayal that sent Danyael to prison spin into a web, ensnaring him. When a terrorist group strikes Washington, D.C., how far will Danyael go to defend a government that sent him to prison to die?
PERFECT WEAPON is the third novel in the award-winning Double Helix series.
Jade Kerrion, an award-winning author, got her start in fan fiction. She developed a loyal reader base with her fan fiction series based on the MMORPG Guild Wars. She was accused of keeping her readers up at night, distracting them from work, housework, homework, and (far worse), from actually playing Guild Wars.
And then she wondered why just screw up the time management skills of gamers? Why not aspire to screw everyone else up too? So here she is, writing books that aspire to keep you from doing anything else useful with your time.
She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with her wonderfully supportive husband and her two young sons, Saint and Angel, (no, those aren't their real names, but they are like saints and angels, except when they're not.)
This is book three in the Double Helix series. If you haven't read the first two books, then you should take a hint and go read them before you finish reading this review. The Double Helix series has already won a number of awards for author Jade Kerrion and it is easy to see why with this latest installment.
The story picks up over a year after the events of Perfect Betrayal. Danyael Sabre, the protagonist of the first two books, an alpha empath with remarkable healing powers is chained up like a rabid beast in a super-max prison, with an electric collar around his neck that electrocutes him every 60 seconds. The good days are the ones where the guards come in and spray him with freezing jets of water, because then the shock from the collar knocks him out for several hours and at least then he is free from pain until his nervous system comes back online. Luckily, the super-max is hit by a militant group, called Sakti, that seeks to liberate imprisoned mutants and Danyael is one of the many they rescue. When Danyael does regain consciousness, he finds himself in Elysium, a retreat for human derivatives that is out of the reach of the public and given clemency by the US government. But when Danyael seems finally to have found a place where he can live in peace, Elysium comes under attack and somehow a fail-safe is tripped, which results in the compound blowing up. Danyael manages to escape with Reyes, the man who ran the retreat, but is shocked to learn that the Mutant Affairs Council (like the X-Men) were behind the attack on the retreat and that they were looking for him. Incredibly, it is the Mutant Assault Group, a military task force and the people who had ripped out his memory in the first book, that offer Danyael safe haven. But all is not as it seems . . .
Danyael Sabre is probably one of the most interesting characters in science-fiction, his empathic and healing abilities making him the perfect Christ figure, bearing in mind the amount of pain that is afflicted on him, and it is easy to see why readers can become very attached to this character. To add spice to this is his inability to have a normal human relationship, due to his psychic shields that have the side-effect of repelling people, despite his desperate need for love and friendship. His closest friends have all betrayed him in the past and the one person who was like a brother to him has been psychically brain-washed to hate him on sight, and the woman he is love with is a stone-cold mercenary that has a very complex attachment to him.
The plot is much more focused than the previous installment, with plenty of twists and depth. The pacing is much better than the previous installment, but there is a point early on where I felt that it could have done with slowing down a little to build up more of a sense of loss when taken away from Danyael. The world-building is just as solid as before and continues to expand the reality in which the story is placed. The writing itself is fluid and descriptive without drawing attention to itself.
When I read the first book, Perfection Unleashed, I compared it to Heroes and Alphas, and whilst this series still bears some resemblance to the lore of those television shows, Double Helix is far more exciting and hi-octane and in a league of its own. This is a well-deserved 4 out of 5. Near perfect but just shy of greatness.
It has the same weaknesses as the others, Danyael is still too good to be true, the story comes across as artificial, some characters and plot lines were introduced and then abandoned (e.g. the telepathic doctor who regularly stole Danyael's blood - it was to explain Danyael's shild in the first installment - it somehow vanished from the story...)
I still don't like Zara, still don't see why she needs to be so unearthly beautiful and seductive.
Galahad is more and more just a template, not a real person, he changes according to what is needed to further the story.
Perfect Weapon is the third book in this collection and as usual fits perfect in this set written by Jade Kerrion. This one is in my eyes the darkest one in the collection and made me feel the worst for Danyael, one of the purest souls there is! And even when he knows he is being played and manipulated he still does what he feels is right to help those who can’t help themselves and to prevent innocents from getting hurt. There are not many selfless people like him out there. Even knowing the worst consequences his actions can bring, he still goes ahead. The character development this author does in this third book is absolutely amazing, and even when you want to shake your head about him, you eventually understand why he does the things he does, even when you know you could never do the same thing. The plot in this book is even more intricate and still has even more twists hidden that are just really well developed and fit beautifully into the story. I am not sure how the author comes up with this story, but she did and I for one am very thankful since I couldn’t put this book down. I just read one book at a time and set my limits that way.
I get that most people don’t understand the military the way I do, but SOLDIERS DO NOT ABANDON THEIR POST TO SAVE THEIR FRIENDS!!! Especially not highly trained and disciplined soldiers like in the Mutant Assault Group. You can’t have it both ways.
Also, military boots are not “knee high.” They just aren’t. A woman wearing heavy patent leather knee high boots is not wearing military boots.
Spoilers . . . . . . . Where did Zara get the dagger after she broke out of her cell? Or Galahad?
Where did the eye cameras come from?!?!? Handwavium of the worst kind.
Zara isn’t really a Mary-Sue, but her abilities strain credulity.
The wheels came off the bus for me. I can’t continue with the series. Nobody is allowed to change or improve except Danyael, and he has to continue going through hell. The world is becoming thinner, not deeper, as the books continue.
When I first saw the synopsis for Sicarius Soul. I was surprised. Here was a whole series I didn't know about and it sounded great. Amazon said I already owned several and a quick look into my reading queue and I found the earlier books. I immediately moved them to the head of the list and I was not wrong to do so. I quickly read - Miriya, then Perfection Unleashed (Double Helix #1), Perfect Betrayal (Double Helix #2), Perfect Weapon (Double Helix #3), Perfection Challenged (Double Helix #4) and then Sicarius Soul.
An incredible world Jade built with diverse interesting characters, all with a different challenge, and yet all intertwined. I definitely read way into the night on every one of these stories. The great news is that there are several more stories in this world for me to read.
At the end of Perfect Betrayal, Danyael Sabre is wrongfully arrested and sent to what he thinks (and has been promised by those closest to him) will a mutant containment facility where he will be pardoned and eventually released. Instead, he is sentenced to life without trial in a maximum security prison, where he is ruthlessly tortured every single day for fourteen months.
The first chapter of Perfect Weapon left me aching for Danyael. How much pain and betrayal can one man take before he breaks? How much more will the author make this character suffer?
At the start of this series, I wanted Danyael Sabre to grow some balls. I wanted him to let go of his inhibitions and kick some well deserved ass. I realise now why he is the way he is and why the author has made him such a tortured soul. Not only is Danyael the physical embodiment of the perfect human being, he is also one of the most powerful creatures on the planet, able to kill with his emotions and his mind. As such, he must maintain masterly control over his emotions, something which takes a lot more power and courage than just letting go and being the superhero he was meant to be.
As for Zara and the rest of Danyael's friends, the third instalment in the series find them questioning their alliances and their motivations with regards to Sabre. The stubborn, beautiful, emotionally labile Zara has grown on me, although I still want to slap her sometimes. Miriya is finally back in this book but is not the same powerful, passionate woman we met in the first book, as a result of the psychic link she maintained with Sabre during his fourteen months of hell in prison.
Although I have mixed feelings about the way Perfect Weapon ended, I still think it deserves a 5 star, if only because of the tears I shed reading this book and the emotional roller coaster the author put me through.
I wanted some closure for Danyael and he does get some from an unexpected source. But this is still not the happy ending I wanted for him. I doubt he will ever truly have a happy ending but he deserves some space to heal (which he kind of gets), love (which he still doesn't really have), good friends (which he sort of has but he doesn't trust them and who can blame him really! If it was me, I'd get the so called friends in a room and let the psychic barriers down for a while. Just to watch them squirm and freak out for a bit. It could be fun) and to be left alone and in peace (considering there's a fourth book coming out this year, my gut feeling tells me he will soon find himself swept up in some sort of catastrophic event where he will be used and abused once more).
As for Galahad, he is finally starting to show his true colours at the end of the Perfect Weapon. Somehow, I also thought he was a suspicious bugger the moment Zara clapped eyes on him in the first chapter of Perfection Unleashed.
Now, will Danyael Sabre's final act involve a showdown with his infamous genetic twin? God I hope so! No one deserves to kick ass more than Danyael and no one (bar Zara) deserves to have his ass kicked more than Galahad!
Another brilliant instalment in this stellar series. I can't wait for the next one!

Once again applause is in order for another brilliant delivery. Compelling too the very end this emotional Sci-Fi book will capture your imagination and thoughts too the end. Drawn into the life of Danyael Sabre as more truths are discovered. Struggling with the emotional betrayal of friends after his fourteen month of confinement under the most horrific torture any man could endure. After a daring break out and plopped into the arms of his enemies he had no idea who was friend or foe. Who he can trust in the ever present world filled of hate and betrayal was the ever growing question. Emotions escalating all around him and new friendships are formed. Restricted in a military base he came to terms with his fate and helped the program off Super Soldiers. With a mere soft word and touch he controlled fifty deadly soldiers with the mind set of curious toddlers but ready to kill at a mere nod off the head. Meeting another woman Major Amanda Chandler who not only was his friend but lover. She supported him through all his emotional turmoil helping to grasp at normality. While still fighting immense pain from wounds inflicted by Lucien in Book 2, with no help from his friends. Miriya was the only one still tapped in his thoughts that reach out to him through the whole ADX ordeal. Coming to grips with her own turmoil of addiction and self loathing, knowing her part in the deceit. Zara really made a turn for the better but then a child would do that to a person. It does not matter how hard she tries to be. Her love causing her to help Danyael in every possible way. Galahad struggling with the issue of perfection. Jealous because of people turning to Danyael in his obvious unperfection, women he falls in love with, leaving him. On a undetected killing spree, only noticeable by Xin. All the characters throughout the books developed into their own skins. Becoming realistic in the fight for justice and freedom. Except maybe Lucien. On the one hand you could feel sorry for him, his mind altered so that he would cut away from Danyael but on the other hand I was really annoyed with him. The history they shared was more than just friendship. They became brothers in the true meaning of the word, so with that said he could surpass the emotional blockage and stretched out a hand of compassion. But he never once did. He became cold, heartless and distant and I really hope that we will see a restoration of this friendship in book 4. I can not wait to read the next book. I loved the way the book ended and would really hope to see the results of the ending continue in book 4. A great read with many twists and turns leaving you wanting at every turn of the page. Entertaining and thoughtful, well written and fast paced, well developed and gripping. All good components of a great book and series.
I was addicted to this book as I was with the last two on the series, to see my reviews click Here and Here. I found myself sneak reading this book at work while the boss wasn't around or outside my son's pre school while waiting for the doors to be open.
Danyael feels the betrayal of his friends deeply which leads him straight into the grasp of General Howard the leader of the mutant assault group who as manipulated Danyael's every move. Danyael however sees the General as the man who saved him from going back to ADX where he was electrically tortured every half hour of every day for fourteen months. The General offers Danyael recuperation and safety. It isn't long until Danyael realises that General as ulterior motives, he wants Danyael to train the super soldiers The telepaths have so far had no luck and the General believes that Danyael would succeed where they failed.
Lucien still doesn't have his memories back and still hates Danyael. he wants to get his memories back he is angry that someone as messed with his head and asks Miriya to help.
Zara is falling in love with Danyael as is Miriya *I cant blame them* Zara as news she needs to share with Danyael, she as a daughter which tests confirm are Danyael.
Xin is still manipulating everyone she is almost replacing Zara in my hate for her. although her reasons are sound I cant help but feel for the people who get hurt because of her.
Galahad's templates are turning up dead although only Xin as noticed the pattern. Galahad is also struggling with being in the real world, he cant understand why everyone cares for Danyael but they keep leaving him, he hasn't learnt social behaviour and no-one as the time to teach him.
I loved this book, every time I read another instalment I love Danyael more. the characters are well thought out and rounded. Jade Kerrion really does a great job at fleshing out each character, we really get to see what makes each character click.
I cant wait to see what else Jade Kerrion as to offer with the Double Helix series, I am really hoping Danyael will get the happy ending he really deserves.
This series gets stronger and stronger with each book. The action is hard and fast paced and the characters are rich and draw you in. Yet again I find myself almost in tears at the things done to the hero of this series. Jade draws you in and makes you pray that this time someone will save him and understand him.
His physical twin Galahad is outwardly what every woman would want but inwardly he never got a chance to grow understanding. I can't wait for the next installment which will hopefully be easier on poor Danyeal.
The pain and emotional agony of this one character shows just how cruel and down right rotten most people are. That they rarely look into the eyes of those they despise to see the real person inside. Another amazing work of fiction. Lets get the next one out soon!
I received a copy of this trilogy in exchange for my honest review. This was such a great science fiction series, one that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was almost nonstop action and lots of suspense as they uncover the true reason behind creating “the perfect human”. Jade Kerrion made her characters extremely realistic. So the novels were easy to get involved in and very difficult to put down. I loved the fact that although it was similar X-Men, the “powers” were a realistic possible human development. This is definitely a 4 star series and worthy read.
The series continues with Danyael imprisoned for life but that obviously can't last long because it wouldn't be much of a story in that case. He gets sprung goes somewhere safe but it isn't safe for long. The trail of bodies gets longer and deeper behind him. I'm getting a bit tired of Danyael and his need for dealing with pain. Let the guy get healthy for crying out loud. I hope the next book in the series is better.
i couldn't sleep till i finish it.... then i couldn't sleep because i was frustrated by the end that i wan't expecting... great book that kept me up all night.......:) can't wait till the next book
Fourteen months of torture only made him stronger. Now he leads fifty super soldiers who will die to protect him and he must sacrifice them all to save his friends and his country...but not himself.
I can't say enough good about this series. This author has an enormous talent and it's displayed in this novel. The plot is fantastic and engaging, the characters are well developed and yet somewhat fluid, much like real-life, and the action with the superior soldiers is beyond description. Danyael's connection to them and their bond has such a bittersweet scene that I was very moved (emotional even). On to book 4.
