Summary: Outliers ...in 30 Minutes - A Concise Summary of Malcolm Gladwell’s Bestselling Book

Rate this book
Outliers …in 30 minutes is the essential guide to quickly understanding the ideas and stories explored in Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling book, Outliers: The Story of Success.

In Outliers, best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell examines the fundamentals of extraordinary success and the people who achieve it. Claiming that society pays too much attention to characteristics like intelligence and ambition in successful people and not enough to the circumstances that shape them, he argues that external forces also propel the highly successful. Culture, family, demographics, chance circumstances, and hidden advantages can have as much or more to do with an outlier’s success as IQ or drive.

Gladwell uses compelling research and fascinating case studies to demonstrate his assertion that nobody achieves success on his or her own merits. From Canadian hockey players to Bill Gates, Gladwell knits together a fascinating story about success.

I’m a huge Malcolm Gladwell fan, and Outliers is without a doubt my favorite out of all his books. That is why this summary comes in so handy so often. Each chapter quickly gets his point across with just the right amout of support. Whether I’m using the 10,000 rule as an example for my children or refreshing my memory of the great story of Joe Flom, all the information is there and I don’t have to take the time to read the entire book again to find it.

I was delighted to find this concise version of a book I have been wanting to read. And I'm glad I did--what a powerful way of considering what creates an 'outlier'. There ARE things you can do to impact your ability to accomplish extraordinary things--talent and intelligence play a smaller part then you'd think. And if you are a parent, you should read this--it will change how you help your child/grandchild. I'm still pondering some of the key points days after reading this. Paradigm shift.
