Clue Meets Bewitched and Nancy Drew With a Touch of Hex!
It was all planned. A weekend away at an exclusive hotel in the Hollywood Hills where vampire PI Nick planned to have some alone time with his hexy honey, Jazz.
Except Stonegate Manor isn’t what it appears to be.
Jazz isn’t impressed. The hotel doesn’t boast spa facilities and that seriously upset magick bunny slippers Fluff and Puff. A celebutante psychic is seriously ticking her off. And what’s going on with the rooms? Not to mention the old-fashioned bellhop is a zombie.
Where’s the romance with a kitchen that doubles as a slaughterhouse, guests turning into dry husks, and rooms that change in the wink of an eye. And what exactly is going on with the hotel manager?
There’s no relaxation this hellish weekend for Jazz and Nick as they search for clues on what’s going on at Stonegate Manor. And Jazz goes up against an ancient evil that just might be more than this hexy witch can handle.
I'm a multi-published author since 1979 and now writing paranormal romance or what I like to call witch lit. 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover came out this past March and Hex Appeal comes out in November with Halloween promotion and will also be carried in Target.
My witch series has also been optioned to be shopped around as a TV series or movie. So here's hoping!
Jazz the witch and Nick the vampire have been invited to attend the opening weekend of a new haunted house hotel. But they quickly discover that the house means to do them and all the other guests harm. Can they save the day and free the guests before they all end up dried out husks? Of course they can.
Hotel Hex is quick and cute. Nothing too surprising but it's good fun if you like that sort of thing.
A standalone short story, 4.5 in the Hex / Jazz Tremaine paranormal romance mystery with a shot at horror, focusing on Jazz and Nick Gregory, a vampire PI.
My Take Ho, ho, Jazz is so not impressed with this “romantic getaway”, and I can not blame her one tint bit. I think I’d’ve gone screaming!
The wallpaper, the doorknobs, carpeting, and more are so incredibly disgusting. It’d give me nightmares! Of course, it gets worse when Jazz encounters the alternate kitchen. *shudder* Wisdom does enhance these feelings through her use of third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Jazz’s and Nick’s perspectives. Ick.
I can think of at least one theme weekend, based on Jazz and Nick’s experiences this weekend. And it wouldn’t encourage return guests! That Laird Manfred would seem to provide great inspiration for those themes Babbington is considering.
I do adore Jazz, she’s such a feisty lady! Combine that with the usual image of a lady who shops and you’ll be needing chocolates too.
I do love Fluff and Puff, but this is the first time their speaking has been readable. It’s previously been Jazz’s interpretation of them. And it was irritating. They sounded like the average couple of kids. As for Jazz and Nick, they've had an on-again, off-again relationship for decades, and it seems as if this one might last a bit.
Whoa, the two lady guests are nasty! Full of tacky insults and too full of themselves. So far, anyway. Luckily, Jazz is good with a response, lol.
It’s a bit of Pandora’s box combined with "Zeus and the Jar of Good Things" in that a container is a valuable “weapon” that one must struggle to reach.
The Story It’s the hotel’s opening weekend with only six, invited, guests in which the management will consider possible theme weekends in the future.
It’s a house in a constant state of change, from cozy to gory, from inviting to horrifying. A promise of great threat awaiting its guests at the end.
The Characters Jazz Tremaine is a witch who specializes in curses, mostly eliminating them. Fluff and Puff are Jazz’s animated, fluffy omnivorous bunny slippers. Irma is the ghost who has haunted Jazz’s T-Bird for decades. Some of the other thirteen exiled witches include the butt-kicking Maggie and Thea, who is the romance writer.
Nick Gregory, a.k.a. Nikolai Gregorivich, is a vampire and a private investigator. He had been with the Protectorate, a policing organization for vampires.
Stonefield Manor had been . . . . . . built by Randolph Perry in the late 1800s and has been revived as a hotel managed by Mrs Babbington. Zorak, a seven-foot zombie, is the bellman. Puck is the most lascivious pen.
Guests include Derwood Grantham, a travel writer; Beatrice Fairfield, an opera singer; and, Sylvie Vandemeer, a psychic.
Jazz’s curse eliminating background includes Raymond Carruthers and Leon Aaron and his office desk. Dweezil is, um, something. Something nasty and Jazz’s boss at All Creatures Limo Service.
Back in Scotland The manor had once been in Scotland as Manfred’s Keep and belonged to an evil Laird Manfred.
Back in the day Amira had been a sorceress originating in Babylon, created by her father.
The Cover and Title The cover is a mostly black background with splashes of gray from the wavering old-fashioned post lamp whose light reveals the trunk of the leafless tree behind it. There’s a full moon on the left that helps silhouette the wicked looking old house up on a hill with bats flying around the roof. The red-haired Jazz herself is in a purple witch’s hat and scoop-necked dress with puffy capped sleeves. Her head tilted to the left, her right arm cocked on her hip, Jazz’s left hand appears to be holding a carved jack-o-lantern filled with goodies and a black cat. I think the brown shape behind the pumpkin with its glowing eyes might be Fluff or Puff. The title is to the right of Jazz’s head with the first word in a deep pink-to-red gradient and the second word in red. The author’s name is at the bottom below Jazz’s waist in white.
The title is truly about “Hotel Hex” and its unholy magic.
“Hotel Hex”, 4.5 in the 'Hex' series, is a long novella which, depending on your point of view, may be a good or a bad thing. One of the defining aspects of the series to date is the author's ability to witter on and on about anything that strikes her fancy, often abandoning the plot for a while. Some people love it. Me? I'm not so sure. Anyhoo, this is a very linear plot with little or no distractions along the way. Jazz and Nick attend the limited opening of an exclusive hotel. They, and a few other guests, expect to have a memorable weekend. And they do, but not in the way they expected. It resembles a darker version of 'Scooby Doo', complete with a shambling zombie and a maniacal sorceress. On oddity is that Fluff and Puff, who have tagged along, can suddenly speak English (they never did before!) 3 Stars.
I love Jazz and Nick´s stories. This Hotel Hex was pretty crazy and horror scary. It felt a bit different. For a novelette or a short story it was great, perfect. It had everything it needed. A bit of romance, some action, magic, haunted hotel, weird characters, insane villian. Just perfect. I just hope that Nick and Jazz will keep appearing in the last two books. The end of this one suggested that.
Jazz and Nick check into a haunted hotel that is more haunted than they expected. I love the bunny slippers as always and the mystery was cool though short and a bit creepy.
My Thoughts Normally, I'm not a big fan of short stories but this is one of my favorites by far. We get another adventure featuring Jazz and Nick, and it's as dangerous as ever. This time the couple has decided to have a weekend getaway in an exclusive hotel but things are not as they seem. Jazz is her usual sassy witchy self, and dislikes certain guests right off. She also senses that things are not as they appear to be. As little things change, Jazz writes them off but soon her and Nick are thrust into a dangerous plot by an evil enemy. Once again, it's up to Jazz to save the day. Nick and Jazz are such a wonderful couple to read about and this time it's not their relationship that is rocky. They mystery and danger in this short story is even better than in the full length novels and leaves you guessing whether or not Nick and Jazz will save the day. You meet an eccentric group of characters that all play a vital role in the plans of evil. It's such a fun and thrilling story that I guarantee, lovers of this series will devour. I couldn't put it down and had to make it to the end to see how and if Jazz and Nick could figure out what evil was playing havoc in their lives and save themselves along with Jazz's mischievous sidekicks, Fluff and Puff. Do not miss this short story in this great witchy series. Warning: violence and some explicit content.
First of all, let me say that this is the last book in the series so far and that it is a novella and not a true novel. IE: it is basically a short story. BUT it is well worth buying IMO.
I LOVE this series and I love all the Witches, but I have to admit that Jazz is my favorite (I think it's the bunny slippers and the later on the "alligator high heels") Somehow, I have a strange idea that Jazz might be related to Dorothy and/or have visited Oz! :) That's NOT to say that Linda Wisdom copied Frank L. Baum's books!!! Jazz and Dorothy are both someone that people of all ages can relate to. Both of these characters are engaging, likable, and make mistakes. The difference being that Jazz has been a witch for centuries and has no surprise at meeting other witches.
Also, let me add, that the Bunny Slipper "Fluff and Puff" have been written as having their own personalities and as such have become characters in their own right (and the same goes for the alligator high heels in the last few books). :)
I'm not sure that I LOVE Nick but I do think that he keeps Jazz grounded and as such is a good match for Jazz.
I texted the author from the email I found on her website and asked her why there haven't been any books in quite a few years in this series and she said that she was having trouble getting the rights to these books from her previous publisher and she doesn't know when it will be resolved. :(
This was a fun, quick read following Jazz the witch and Nick her vampire boyfriend on a so-called romantic weekend away, only as you would expect, things don't quite go as smoothly as they would like. The hotel they are staying in is supposed to be haunted and the other residents invited to stay are all humans with some possible powers.
When the rooms and furniture start changing and faces keep appearing the fire's flames and in the mirrors, Jazz and Nick know there's something amiss with this hotel. When one of the other residents is found dead, all dried out like a husk, Jazz and Nick put their sleuthing skills to the test to find out who or what it is before they are next on the list!
Although is was very obvious as to whom the perpetrator was, it was fun watching Jazz trying to solve the mystery without any magic! And as usual Fluff and Puff were hilarious and were desperate to leave and go and stay at the Hilton Hotel instead! I liked the naughty little Puck as well.
I love this series and always find it highly entertaining and definitely worth a read if you haven't already.
I've read some of Linda Wisdom's Hex series before, so it felt good to be going back to characters I already knew. However I didn't realise that this is only a short story. Somewhere between a novel and a novella. I'd paid over £3 for it on Amazon and felt for the story I got, it wasn't really worth the asking price.
You don't need to have read any previous books in the series to understand what's going on. Witch Jazz and her vampire lover Nick have been invited to a complimentary weekend in a themed hotel, but on arrival it looks to be something more sinister going on.
From building up the evil force behind the strange hotel I believed I was in for an epic near-death battle of magick for Jazz and Nick. But sadly is was all a bit rushed and just a bit too easy. There was no gripping tension. It was an engaging enough read, but I felt more effort could have been put in; I was left feeling cheated.
The read lasted just over an hour. There are better novellas available to buy for less. Not sure I'll be back to read any more of this series.
Ms. Wisdom has definitely lost her way with this series, which is a shame, as the first several full-length stores were fun. There wasn't enough material here to make a full-length story, so I think she was right to make it a novella, but it still lacked substance. The sloppy editing - misspellings, missing words, inconsistency with character names (!) - was distracting. But the biggest problem was the lack of fleshing out of the villain, and the abrupt and relatively simple way that the problem was solved - very weak.
I've missed Jazz and Nick since there hasn't been a Linda Wisdom book out in a little while and while this one was a bit bloodier than most of her stories, it was still fantastic. I wish there had been more to it, but I feel that way about most novellas. I was heartened by the small cliffie at the end but of course, that means more waiting...and we all know how good I am with waiting...ARGH!!!!
Typically funny, entertaining, easy read with Jazz and Nick in a strange hotel for a romantic weekend. They end up in a strange situation with walls changing, guests dying, and Jazz's magic on the fritz.
I have been a fan since book 1. I often re-read the books to "hang out" with these enjoyable characters.
I love reading this series by Linda Wisdom and this enovella did not disappoint me. I love all the unique and funny characters in them. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and can't wait for the next one!!
i liked it but it was a bit more gruesome than I expected and too much for my taste. i think LW is a fantastic writer and this was a fantasy world rich in vivid detail and delightfully snarky.
I enjoy this series, the reason for the 4 is that I think the books need to be a bit longer. The content is great & I enjoy the characters, but compared to some other authors they are on the shorter side, but that can also get into publishing frequency deadlines.
Hotel hex is well written and light hearted. It's a quick read that tells the story. You don't get bogged down with heavy details. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a little romance, magic and a mystery to solve.
Jazz and Nick together for another great adventure. The crazy bunny slippers were a nice add to the story...but I missed our ghostly friend. All in all another good read from Linda Wisdom.
An OK book, not a great one like the full length novels. Feels like it was written in a rush- mistakes with names (calling Jazz Leiticia, and Sylvie Kiki), no explanation for how Fluff and Puff are suddenly speaking English instead of their own language, things like that.
Brilliant as always but over far to quickly. I read this in one sitting but it was good to have a bit more of Nick and Jazz. I can't wait for the next instalment.
If you have not read Linda Wisdom's witch series you need to! I hope to find more of these mini stories to keep reading about the witches I know and love!
