""Teddy bears are meant to be loved and cared for, not kicked into corners and left out in the rain.... Poor Teddy is abused and ignored until he is left in the park and then adopted by a new, more caring child. The honey-brown bear is the focal point of each full-page illustration, and his bedraggled charm is endearing.... A lovely choice for bedtime sharing with a child and a beloved bear."" School Library Journal ""Weninger sketches Ragged Bear's personality, but in the handsome oversize format, Marks's soft, fluid watercolors give this bear his lovable form. This bear is a very appealing fellow.... Deceptively simple, deeply satisfying."" Kirkus
I loved this book! Its about an old rugged teddy bear owned by a group of children who do not take care of him. The Teddy bear is so mistreated and rugged that he gets left in a park and eventually thrown in the trash where another young child finds him. He's given a bath and fixed up and becomes even more beautiful than before. He is also well loved by the new child. The art in this is quite lovely and the whole idea of rehoming the teddy bear is great. The idea of finding the bear and fixing him up I think encourages children to take care of their toys and if they are given a hand-me-down or find one, that a little love can go a long way. This is a great theme to show children the truth behind "one mans trash is another mans treasure" and that even an old rugged teddy bear can find happiness and love.
I love this book. I grew up reading it, and it has always put a smile on my face. The story is about an old ragged teddy bear. The bear belongs to a group of children who do not take care of the bear, nor do they really care for the bear. The bear spend most of his time sitting in a corner ripped and torn. The children decide to take teddy to the park where they forget him when it begins to rain. Teddy is left there alone for many hours, when a young child comes by and picks him up. The child takes him home, bathes him, repairs him, and shows him love and kindness. For the first time teddy has a warm bed to sleep in, a child who loves him, and he is happy. It is a quick read, but very worth it!
I read this book before giving it to my pregnant co-worker for her unborn baby. It is a sweet story about an unloved, abandoned bear who is rescued by a kid who really truly loves him. It's sort of like the Corduroy story, but the bear in this book is in much worse shape.
This book is so much like Edward Tulane. In this book te bear gets left behind and then a new owner finds him and he gets loved all over again. Childern can relate to this if they have lost an animal or toy before.
