Like Hell Itself by Diane Major surprised the hell out of me - in an awesome way. What starts off as an indictment to the way the poor are treated in UK soon becomes a joyous wonderment full of thrills only to descend into uncertainty and fear as paranormal events take control. Brilliantly written and paced to perfection by the author.

Ellen and her friend are living rough on London's streets with barely enough between them to buy food of any kind. So what the heck, they drop their last pound coin for a lottery ticket. BINGO! They strike it big time. The author expertly keeps both girls feet firmly grounded as they go through the nervous times of instant wealth and how to manage that wealth.

Ellen moves to her dream house in the countryside where her life changes yet again when nightmares spill into her waking world. And so she investigates the haunting of her new home. It just goes to show money isn't everything. Brilliant stuff and I so loved this book.

Very highly recommended.

"Like Hell Itself" by Diane Major was a real surprise find for me. Recommended to me by a friend is sat on my kindle for some time until I finally got round to it.
The book is about two women who have fallen on hard luck until one day they win the lottery and are able to lead the lives they desire. Kind and modest in their spending they create beautiful lives for themselves and stay well on the ground of reality. They build their businesses and homes beautifully but then one of them gets haunted in her countryside residence by visions in her dreams and a paranormal 'ghost hunt' begins.
From the beginning I cared for the characters. I am also a big fan of ghost hunt stories just like this. The rural setting and the supporting characters round this novel up perfectly as do the supporting cast.
This is a lovely read in many ways with some romance thrown in but it is also a gripping and fast paced paranormal thriller with plenty of good suspense.
Excellent.

I love reading paranormal, romance, about nightmares people have, and mysteries. This wonderful book has it all. Poor Ellen just can’t seem to catch a break. Just when you think her life will become normal, with her romantic involvement with Graeme and….well, I don’t want to spoil it for you.

I love the fast pace and the continual search for the background and history of the Ellendale home, Ellen buys in the countryside. Those ancient tiles on her dining room floor had me hooked. The dreams that soon turned into nightmares, made my adrenaline rapidly increase. I had to find out what was going on.

I highly recommend you read this book.

Another imaginative outing from the author of "I Am Nine".

Two friends commit themselves to one last gamble for a better life - after all, things can't get much worse. Or can they?

Diane Major's story with its supernatural elements is a cautionary tale: luck can be a double-edged sword. Be careful what you wish for!

A recommended phantasmagorical short read.
