《大学用书：古文字学简论》在阐述于省吾先生“以形为主”的古文字研究方法时，对古文字客观存在的字形和辞例这两方面属性，强调了应以前者为基本出发点，但也指出了要辩证地对待两者在考释古文字中的作用。因恐怕读者片面理解“以形为主”，在本次再版时，对辞例的作用作了一定的补充。
