Rate this book
-Ποια είναι η φύση της "αγαθής κοινωνίας";

-Έχει μέλλον το έθνος σε μια εποχή παγκοσμιοποίησης;

-Οι εκλογές προάγουν τη δημοκρατία ή απλώς την πειθάρχηση και τον έλεγχο;

-Πώς οργανώνεται η κυβέρνηση;

-Πρέπει να αλλάξουν οι δομές της κυβέρνησης;

-Γιατί κάποια πολιτικά συστήματα είναι πιο επιτυχημένα από άλλα;

One of my many resentments about Goodreads is that it does not have sufficient number of active users who are interested in non-fictional material (political science in particular). Dostoevsky fans can discover on Goodreads, sooner or later, recommendation to read Huxley or Dickens but it's hard for an admirer of Arundhati Roy to discover Slavoj Zizek or Noam Chomsky in similar fashion.

It is understandable, in some sense, as theoretical stuff is generally considered as boring and dry, so anyone who reads for pleasure would not wish to undertake its cultivation. It is a great loss for anyone who is interested in non fiction because it is extremely rare to find good recommendations and intelligent reviews (except in case of sensationalized books or authors).

Be that as it may, this is the worst book on political science theory except all the other books that I have tried on same subject :p Extremely balanced, objective and lucid- anyone who is compelled to know the basics of political society should read this book.

Some people here complain about the writing style of Heywood, which I don't see. As a textbook it may be boring, so if your professor made you go through it cover to cover, that's her or his fault and that way this book will kill you!

During my BA and MA I used it more as a first introductory step to research or writing essays. That way you don't forget anything. So an essay on, e.g., federalism, I'd read the chapter on decentralisation (and only that) and then take it from there.

So I use it more as a work of reference. I'll be honest. Long after my Master's degree I still often go back to this book. Not only to get the basics right, but to get back to basics. Because -- let's be honest -- political science isn't exactly rocket science and the field hasn't developed many irrefutable key insights that it takes superior intelligence to grasp.

If you could split political science into on the one hand political philosophy and classical scholarship, and on the other hand the behaviourist science-y stuff, I feel this book is more of the former and gives the latter it's deserved (read 'small') space.

So, as a work of reference, wonderful.

The most interesting parts for me were the sections on ideologies, it works as a sort of primer for debates you're likely to see when embarking on some sort of political understanding. So in that sense what you gain from this is a framing for political issues through the presentation of varying opinions on a wide range of phenomena. Yet still most of the discussion circles around very mainstream discourse, which is the books chief flaw, for instance; there's no mention of sortition democracy outside of half a sentence on the Athenian executive body. I think this misses out a serious part of the conversation on democracy because the implications of the various instantiations of a sortition representation system are far reaching and have the benefit of overcoming a variety of flaws in current representative liberal democracy.

If the book had a subtitle it should be ': an introduction' since its method of approach is dealing with topics at the level of appearance. It does however warrant re-readings and it's easy to forget in which way the various fields developed interconnect. Overall I can't say it made any great errors and I'm not sure if you'll find anything that succeeds any more in the realm of impartiality.

This was the textbook we used during my introduction to political science class in fall 2014, and even though the writing style of Heywood is boring, it was never required of a university textbook to be 'satisfying' from a stylistic point of view.
I will definitely come back to this book on various occasions in the years to come, if you're interested in politics this is a good introductory guide.

This was a slog. Thorough, to be sure, but I had to put it down because I literally could not keep my eyes open on numerous occasions. Plus it is full of typos and other errors. All told - a frustrating read and I wouldn't recommend it, there must be other good introductory politics textbooks out there.

Mind-opening úvod do štúdia politológie. Zdanlivo jasné a všeobecne známe pojmy a procesy vysvetlené a interpretované rôznymi myšlienkovými smermi.

I found couple mistakes.First big one-''Serbs occupy Kosovo 1999''. How can be posibble when Kosovo was a part of Serbia in 1999.How can one country occupy their own teritory.For me (graduated political scientist)this book is shallow,weak ...I am not sure book was a part of any academic program.

I can see why a book like this would be boring to many (every person who saw me reading it asked if I'm studying and they looked very surprised on hearing that I'm reading it out of interest). Personally I did not find it boring at all, and I read it cover to cover. It was interesting and informative with lots of historical examples. I enjoyed comparing my own country and especially enjoyed understanding the different ways of going about politics. I would like to read more about anarchism, Islamic politics, and the different ways monarchical rule has been done. In that sense, this book focus' more on liberal democracy which the author says most countries have nowadays (perhaps I still don't understand enough because I struggle to see how that is true). Another thing I would like to read more about is secessionist politics, which was also only briefly mentioned in the light of nationalism and ethnicity. Really a great book for those who want to understand better what actually is happening when they stand in the queue to vote.

Good introductory for knowing more about politics. One of my disappointment from this book is the writer rarely discuss deeply a specific theory that has a great significant in political science development in a specific section. Much political theory discussed too brief to bring a good understanding, and scattered too, so it often makes it difficult to refer to it.

Maybe my disappointment come from my expectation for a book which intends to be a textbook for a specific discipline would have a deep explanation about theory with a clear and specific section for each theory. But overall, this book gave a reader a good introduction, especially for political students.

4/5 for the richness of the information this book brings.

"Politics" is a new kind of politics textbook. Stimulating, succinct and accessible, it offers a truly comprehensive introduction to the study of politics, written from an international perspective. This second edition takes full account of new developments such as debates about globalization, the impact of the mass media, and the shift from government to governance. It also includes new boxed material on major thinkers and key concepts.
