Return to Beartooth in Unforgiven by B.J. Daniels, available from Harlequin HQN.
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
I think it was my good fortune that I read the first five chapters of the first book before I remembered this one existed. With some foresight, this story is a perfect set up for that book and has already answered some developing questions. It succinctly introduces the major characters as well as the mystery that plagues them.
It does end in a cliffhanger and my recommendation would be to have the next book in the queue. I'm much more excited now to get back to Unforgiven. This did what a prequel is supposed to do and it's short and so very not sweet.
I love the way that this prequel is written. Daniels gets right down to the nitty gritty of her story, drawing readers deep into the world of Beartooth, Montana, setting them up for the first novel in the series. She highlights her characters’ strengths & weaknesses, making them real people that you can identify with. At the same time, she introduces readers to the town and it’s tragedies in such a manner that it leaves you wanting & needing to know more.
This story really gives you a peek at the lives of the characters & sets readers up perfectly for the 1st novel in the series.
I have to read more! This will whet your appetite to read more of the Beartooth, Montana series. Ms. Daniels writes such interesting characters and mysteries.
I'm so intrigued on who the killer is. I have a feeling I know, but we shall see. This was a short intro to this set of characters. Bethany has been in love with Clete forever, but he just sees her as a little girl. But he does kind of hint that there could be something more when she gets older. Ginny finds out she's pregnant and has a secret boyfriend whom she tells and he promises to make everything all right. Things aren't always what they seem.
I’m disappointed that this novella is sold with a blurb that makes it sound like a romance that sets up the world, but it’s not a cohesive narrative. There’s actually no central hero or heroine and scenes jump between many POV. What it does do well is introduce the town and some of the major players, along with showing a bit of the story surround the events of a murder. The characters are well drawn and I’m excited to read more in this world.
However, the story needs to not be teased as a romance, and I am disappointed in that regard. However, I don’t think that’s the author’s fault, but her publishers.
I will probably return to this novella and enjoy it more after reading further in the series.
This is the introduction to the Beartooth, Montana series. Ginny West is the privileged daughter of rancher Taylor West and has been sneaking out to meet a married man. She thinks he will divorce his wife and marry her when she tells him she is pregnant. He tells her to meet him in the secret room under the stage of the old theater and it will end tonight. Her body is found by hikers. She was beaten in the head with a blunt object that left a dent in her skull. Her body was then tossed out of a truck. Sheriff Frank Curry sees where she tried to climb out of the gully and knows her injuries were bad. One leg was broken with the bone sticking out.
It was a simple enjoyable introduction to the Beartooth Montana series. As always Ms. Daniels pulls you right into the story, but I was very disappointed that there was nothing to let me know that this was a very short (approx. 40 pages) prequel to the first book "Unforgiven" in the series. It ends in a huge cliffhanger!
Currently Amazon and iTunes is charging $5.99, which I personally think is outrageous.
A little preview to the series about Beartooth, Montana. High school, college, careers, and romance. We meet a few of the characters whom I'm sure will be appearing in the future books in this series. Will Clete wait for Bethany to grow up? What will happen to Destry and Rylan? Who killed Rylan's sister? And what sort of secrets will Nettie reveal? And I think the sheriff is going to be playing a part in this too.
I like anything by BJ Daniels so I'm sure this series will be an interesting one. She writes a fine romance/suspense story.
Betheny and Clefe was always together,( atleast in her in mind) until he left Beartooth, Montana on a football scholarship, until an injury brought him back.
Now she is determined to get him to notice her, if Ginny doesn't get in the way. But Ginny has hervown secret the reason she did not go back to school.
Not long enough to be billed as a novella but still it will whet your appetite with this short teaser that gives a glimpse into the full length book it introduces, I know I now want to know what happened to Ginny West.
This was a really good start, but I didn't realize when I purchased it that it was only 32 pages long. I wished it was longer, but now I can't wait for the rest of the series to find out what happens. This is just a teaser.
This was very well written. B J. Daniels weaves a great story. This story sets up her next book in the series, "Unforgiven". It is a short 32 pages, and is designed to introduce you to the characters and the plot. it will definately make you want to go out and get the rest of the series.
As always s I was riveted with the story and the characters. BJ Daniels has the gift of keeping you in suspense but also giving you a hint on the next peril or rescue. Loved it!!!
