Tony Buzan was an English author, educational consultant, and pioneer of the mind mapping technique, which he developed to enhance learning, creativity, and memory. Born in Middlesex in 1942, he studied psychology, English, mathematics, and science at the University of British Columbia and later became a graduate student at Simon Fraser University, where he served as the inaugural president of the student society. Buzan was a strong advocate for mental literacy and radiant thinking, drawing inspiration from figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein. He authored or co-authored over 80 books, including the bestselling Use Your Head, The Mind Map Book, and The Speed Reading Book, and gained international recognition through his 1970s BBC series Use Your Head. Buzan co-founded the World Memory Championships, the Mind Sports Olympiad, and the Brain Trust Charity. His legacy lives on through his books, seminars, and iMindMap software.
Without doubt I learnt a lot reading this book and like the fact that I read it. But it is important to note that I didn’t like the entire book, but liked some sections of the book which I’m definitely going to use. I divide the book in to three sections for easy reference, the first few chapters were really interesting where you get to learn about your brain’s capacity, storage and marvels. It is amazing to know about this genius machine we carry within us. It is all about how you can use your brain without stressing and tiring it too much. In the second section, I found repetitive contents which were so boring to go through, this bit dragged a little bit as I constantly felt asleep while reading. Quite unusual as I go at one reading or long reading spells myself. I agree with some of the reviews which say that it sounds like an advertising campaign for the products and services of the author. Surely it does, but it’s only few chapters in the middle of the book. Final section again like the first, was very interesting and quite useful for work, study and life as well. Overall it’s a good read and especially the young student should give it ago, so they get their base right.
I like the whole concept of mind mapping, but this author really gets under my skin, with his supercilious nature.
If you, like me, like the whole concept of mind mapping, then give this book a go. The only thing I will say is: "Don't always believe what this author tells you," as some of his ideas have been refuted.
Apparently, the words of Tony Buzan: " The mind map is the, ' Most Powerful Thinking Tool In The Universe'," will draw you in and hopefully, have you believing everything stated in his book.
I beg to differ on this...the brain is the most powerful thinking tool in the universe!
Lots of Hyperbole to keep the readers interested🙄
I will say one thing though, this book has gave me a few ideas for designing mind maps, but I just wish it was written by somebody less...conceited.
I feel a 3 star review is very fair, given the fact that the author likes to go on and on and on and on about all his great ideas, and most of all, his: 'Mind Mapping Tool'. The tool he created, but can't he proved.
I guess you do get some authors who think they are so special and like us to know it.
My final thoughts are that, being a new student, in Higher Education (doing an Open University degree in computing and I.T), this book has come in handy for helping me design my first mind map, which was on my learning strengths and weaknesses list.
It has showed me the many central rules you should use before starting a mind map, including: using a central image or picture; using different coloured branches for each topic and using a single key image or word for each branch. These ideas where a massive help in showing me how to design my first mind map.
Only time will tell whether this simple, but effective idea will help me in my forth coming studies and help me to gain the certificate I so desire🤔
I think Mind Map is a wonderful invention. I have been studying my Physics lessons better because I have drawn a lot of Mind Maps to present my theory lessons. I totally agree with the effect of Mind Map. When I draw a Mind map, I have to read through my lessons very carefully, choose the key words and ideas to draw. Finally, with many colours and highlight, my Maps are more remarkable and I have remembered even the smallest details.
Now, I even draw a recipe for my mother by Mind Map. She finds this idea very interesting as well :)
He spent the entire book doing two things: elevating a simple brainstorming technique to a panacea for everything in the world; and selling us on this idea over and over and over and over again.
To get an idea how silly and wrongheaded the whole thing was, he concludes his book (written in 1994) telling us how we are on the cusp of a mentally literate (redundant.....) revolution, where intelligence will be the new mark of fame.
And Kim Kardashian is our cultural icon, while Donald Trump is the frontrunner for President.
This book is what happens when someone overthinks the simple concept/subject and tries to make a life long project out of it. I'm a fan of mind maps, not a fan of this book.
This book describes the concepts of mind maps; a tool that is supposed to revolutionize the way we live our lives. Mind Maps use knowledge about the way our brain works in order to efficiently utilize our brains and makes creative thinking and memorization, among other functions, easier.
The book, at least partially, is quite enjoyable. However, the concept of Mind Maps is, in my opinion, overrated, and the author is giving it far more attention than it deserves. Well, it is a book about Mind Maps, but that does not mean making Mind Maps the solution to every problem we face in life.
I got tired with the book towards the end, but in the beginning, it was quite enjoyable. Learning more about our brains, how they function, and how to utilize them better is something I enjoyed. However, looking at it that way, I would’ve been better off if I got one of Tony Buzan’s other books about memory or using our heads. It is likely to have more of what I wanted, and less of this Mind Map advertising.
I doubt I’ll get another of his books though. I like the subject of the brain and memory, but I will probably find other authors. Diversity is good in this regard.
Yazar her bölümde farklı şeylerden bahsediyor halbuki.
The single best resource I have found relating to mind maps and listed by practitioners as being "the one" to own. While much of the book is repetitive with regards to overall process of creation, benefits, etc., the scope and variety of examples, images, and exercises makes it an invaluable resource. If you are interested in the subject, this is the one to read, from the guy who developed the overall mind map concept over an extended period of time. I'm keeping this one at my office as a resource if any of you co-workers would like to check it out or borrow it.
Note: The book is no longer in print and you have to obtain it on the secondary market.
Mind Map - Tony buzan would be with you Step by step to how make your own Style mind Map & Talked about Mind Map usage in detail long explanation - Quite good book for one about start using Mind Map in his Life
I used to suffer from a lack of photographic memory. Hence, I searched to find a source of material to overcome it. Although this book explains how to do mind mapping but does not explicitly say why the writer has been the champion of memory in the world for several years. To put it precisely, the secret of achieving such a success is not released in e passage. Anyhow, it is a sort of reference in the field.
I had high hope for this book. Somehow Mind Mapping has always interested me but I've never really taken time to know what it entails. Recently I've been researching better ways to learn and take notes, and the time had come to actually know what the method is all about.
Well, I'm quite disappointed. The method itself looks simple enough, but I was very frustrated by the lack of substantiation of the method through evidence. The author often refers to his other books for details and there are instances where he actually cites academic studies, but much of supporting evidence consists of mere anecdotes ("hey, this guy tried this, and he really liked it!" kind of stories...). Things got so repetitious that I increasingly skimmed through toward the end.
In the end, I am not convinced if there is any substance to the whole method.
Written 25 years ago, I'd suggest that you read Chapter 29 first if you wish to get the taste of the writing style in the book. The author was writing about the future which is far from what we now know. If that sort of uncontrolled optimism is your thing, then this book may be for you. If not, then the entire book would feel pseudoscience-y.
The theory exposed -and practices proposed- in the first chapters sound indeed reasonable and useful. The author references many cognitive features (visual memory, associative networks, synesthesia...) that can help a lot in both reflective and creative thinking. However, the writing style is so annoying... The whole book is full of pseudo-scientific terms and sentences, claiming how miraculous "his" technique is and what incredible goals you can achieve if you adhere to the "radiant thinking" trend. Also, I felt that the author went around the same ideas and structure again and again, not as a way of helping you -the reader- grasp difficult concepts, but rather aiming to make the argument that Mind Maps can be applied in very different contexts (which is probably true, but looks like you don't need 300 pages to demonstrate it). Finally, the appendix contains some illustrations of "great brains" annotations (Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Picasso...)... none of them being a mental map, at least not in the way ape he describes in the rest of the book...
A book that changed my life because simply it changed my Brain ! I used to have a very bad memory, I always getting confused when note making or note taking ! It also give you a very productive and innovative way to be creative and to deliver new creative Ideas. Now, I can't attend any new training course without having my Ipad with the IMindMap App ! It's just Amazing, it will change the way of processing in your mind. I thank the God he drove this book for me in the beginning of my learning life.
If you pick this book up because you want to improve your mindmapping skills, be aware that there must be better books out there for this task. Much of the text in this books is occupied why the technique of Mindmaps is great and how you do it in general concept. For me, this made for a lot of skipped paragraphs. What I found great what the constant push for using Mindmaps not only as a structuring device but for creativity as well. Some of the examples have been enlightening for me and broadened my view on how to apply this tool. All in all, the book is not bad, just with way too much fluff
Vedle toho propaguje i další autorovy produkty, třeba software iMindMap.
From the preface: “By the early 1970’s artificial intelligence had arrived…”
In what world does this guy live in??? OK, so right off the bat I have an issue with accepting the author's expertise, because the above statement is just silly and now it is a number of years later. And I still wouldn't say AI has arrived. It also doesn't help that the author got a low marks from me on the other Mind Mapping book I read of his. You might ask - why did you read two of them if you hated the first? Well, mind mapping is a good tool. Most of what I know and how I use it I cobbled together over a number of years so I AM interested in polishing my skills. Theoretically, this author's work would be a place to find the bits for said polish. But no. Instead there is a lot more 'advertisement'-feeling, no content statements that just leave me wondering how he gets away with it. Statements like "While Mind Mapping, one is constantly on the verge of new discovers and new realisations." or "The Mind Map works in harmony with the brain's natural desire for completion or wholeness." I'd swear I have heard the same structure in the latter for many worthless nutritional supplements - "Super drug works in harmony with your body's natural blah blah blah" - get it?
Guess I'm not buying it and won't be opening anything more by this author.
Better than the Mind Map Handbook but then again I only gave it a 1.
