Sherlock Holmes Remastered: A Study in Scarlet

Rate this book
The word Rache, written in blood on the wall at the scene of a murder, marked Sherlock Holmes’ introduction to the world. Published in 1887, A Study in Scarlet presented Holmes as a new type of hero, one who uses razor sharp powers of deduction and minute attention to detail to solve cases too hard for Scotland Yard. Sherlock Holmes’ brilliant insights and quick wit soon made him a legend. Due to his immense popularity, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle went back to his most famous character again and again, writing an additional 3 Sherlock Holmes novels and 56 short stories over the next four decades. This edition is not the original text. Rather, it is a remastered version that strives to make the classic story more accessible. While the vast majority of the text is original, hundreds of modifications have been made to make the story an easier, smoother reading experience for modern and younger readers. We hope these changes will allow a new generation to enjoy the brilliance of Sherlock Holmes.

A censored Sherlock Holmes story

By Charles van Buren on September 17, 2018

Format: Kindle Edition

Sherlock Holmes Remastered: A Study in Scarlet", should read Sherlock Holmes censored. Really. This ridiculous "editor" censored Arthur Conan Doyle! He removed things which might hurt someone's touchy feely, tender sensibilities. I am all grown up and life has tempered me into a steel spring (or something). Besides, my momma told me that I wouldn't like everything about life. I can deal with unpleasant portrayals of Mormans. I can even read Huckleberry Finn without weeping and wringing my hands.

It really bothers me that this pathetic, limp rewrite of a classic has 59% 5 star and 26% 4 star ratings. I decided to read some of those to try and understand what kind of person WANTS their literature censored. One of the first I read begins his Amazon profile, "I'n dude that loves to read and write." (Errors are in the original.) As I read more of the reviews, it came to me that the answer is probably that Amazon is again mixing reviews for different editions. Something which they do very often. So maybe all of those people didn't write positive reviews of this censored edition. I'm not sure about the "dude."

Skip this and read it as Doyle wrote it. If your feelings can't handle it and you don't understand all of the words, you probably shouldn't be reading adult literature anyway.

I read the Kindle edition of this bowdlerized novel.

Reading this was a complete waste of time. I wish I had realized that "Re-Mastered" meant someone had re-written the book. It wasn't until after I had finished the entire book and got to the section Leo Zanav wrote about what he had done to the novel that I really understood. He re-wrote it using more modern language and took out anything that might be offensive or misleading. He also dumbed it down. There were several times through-out the book that I wondered how this series became so famous while it was written so blandly. It turns out that it's Mr. Zanav that is so boring. I started the actual, "A Study in Scarlet" and found it was written better, that there is more detail, the characters have more realistic personalities, and the language is a dated - just like you would expect from a book written over a 100 years ago. Now I know to avoid the Leo Zanav versions of Doyle's work.

This is a re-written version because it is offensive to Mormons. However, I prefer my classics un-censored thank you very much. I'm a big boy, and I'll make up my own mind what to think about it.

Reader beware, this is not A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I received a Kindle for Christmas and was so excited about the prospect of free books and my introduction to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works that I completely failed to read the reviews on Amazon and see that "remastering" meant that this reteller/author/editor Leo Zanav took significant liberties with this book.

As a result the following has been added to my to-do list:
1. Shamefully remove A Study in Scarlet from my 'Read' list. Evidently, I didn't read the actual book.
2. Read A Study in Scarlet and compare.
3. Reserve my rating of Zanav's book until I've read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel.
4. Get "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" tattooed on the back of my hand.

This edition is not the original text. Rather, it is a remastered version that strives to make the classic story more accessible for modern and younger readers. Instead of being hired to retrieve letters from a possible blackmailer, this is a murder and revenge story going back 20 years in Mormon Utah.

If you haven't read the original A.C. Doyle story, than this is an interesting story. However, if you have it pales in comparison to the original.

I have read the original Study in Scarlet, but it's been a few years so I thought I would read it again. The kids and Brad (and I) have just finished watching the BBC Series Sherlock (FYI we skipped the 1st episode of the 2nd series) and the kids want more Sherlock, so they have been reading the books. I remembered that this one (which is the first in the Sherlock books) was quite offensive in it's portrayal of Mormons, so when Ryan and Jenna wanted to read it and I found this version (which many people complain about it being censored) I figured a watered down version would probably be best for them to read, and since they are reading it, so am I...

Still not my favorite Sherlock book, due to the treatment of the Mormons, but a good introduction to Sherlock.

Yep - the original is offensive.. Not sure I want it watered down or not.. Thinking I will read the original and compare notes. Have to say though, I know lots of Mormons and they are the sweetest, nicest folks I know - if I read a contemporary book that portrayed them even in this watered down way, I would have given the book a lower rating. But, it was a great read, they didn't know better at the time, and as such, it is a good historic
Glimpse into stereotypes, as well as history... Worth the read, especially as its free!

I liked it..... But I thought remastered is to develop story or some thing...But the writing style of Sir Arthur's was gone.....
The originals sounds good rather than duplicates...
A simple example is We do like movies in their Original languages, even if they are translated or remastered in our regional languages that won't feel good.....As same as This Bokk is... :P

P.S: No offense Leo Zanav

I thought it was a fine book. After I read I found out it was.. basically abridged. A few changes altered to mitigate offense and update language. A lot of reviews see this as a negative. For me it only makes me curious to read the original as well.

I doubt any major changes were made. It's a fun book and a fine mystery.

Easy to read and you get the meat of the story without trying too hard to understand the story. I enjoyed being able to read my first Sherlock Holmes story without feeling like I was back in high school having to analyze everything. Very interesting story as well.

I've read several of the Holmes stories but not this one...I'm glad now I have! A great introduction to such iconic characters and fun story twists with Holmes and "the gang".
