Allow me to summarize the plot for you:

There was an important whiney dude, a couple of horseys, a giant mushroom-headed penis, the brief appearance of a slice of key lime pie and then 2 dudes growling MINE! at the end. In other words:

But it's Mary Calmes so I liked it anyway.

Thanks for the BR Otila, Jen & JL!

No where near as exciting to me as Honored Vow, this was still a nice change of pace as we see a different point of view in the form of Domin settling into his new life.

This was full of politics, tribal conflicts, and more absurd werepanther laws. Be reassured that despite danger around every corner, as well as plenty of violent brutality, there was also some nice hot man smex and plenty of love to go around.

All in all, this really was quite a good spinoff to the crazy, fantastical, Jin and Logan show.

I really enjoyed this book. It was nice to spend time with Domin and Yuri.

I think Domin is my favourite character and I love him and Yuri together.

Domin is now semel-aten and it’s safe to say he’s struggling. He’s snappy and unhappy. His new job is daunting and he has no idea how he’s going to cope. But Domin has already been through so much. It’s changed him completely from the man he used to be. He is definitely the right man for the job he just has to realise that.

We also catch-up with Logan, Jin and all our favourite characters.

The story of Domin Thorne and Yuri Kosa.

I love this panther shifter series. Such interesting world-building and characters in this universe. In no way is this a standalone story. You have to read the series in order or you will be lost as to what is going on here.

Domin and Yuri are gorgeous together. I love that Domin knows what Yuri is to him and appreciates it and Yuri knows as well even if it takes him a while to realize it. Can I say though that Koren really needs a smack?

I love the Logan and Jin cameo. Perfection. Hello Ilia!

I don't want to let these characters go. I would love to see the series continue with stories of the Iusaaset. Fingers crossed! If you enjoy your M/M romance with a PNR twist and a unique concept for shifters this may be a series for you to try. Begin with Change of Heart.

Fun—and funny.

Nice to catch up with old friends.

Honestly: not much in the way of plot, but the banter is sometimes hilarious.

A fun addition to the Calmes shifter universe.

While Crucible of Fate, told entirely from Domin Thorne's POV, is not my favorite in the series, mainly because it has entirely too little Jin and Logan Church, and I felt like Domin is entirely too thick-headed at times, especially about how much he loves his mate, Yuri Kosa, it's an entertaining read that's a bit less brutal than some of the books in the series (looking at you Honored Vow), and there is still plenty of action before we get our happy ending.

Single POV, paranormal romance, with plenty of action, sexy times, and a sweet HEA.
"Youre mine," he whispered.
There was never any doubt.

I realize that there were some who complained the lore etc wasn't really fleshed out with the previous books in the series...But I enjoyed them regardless of that. With the fourth book in the Change of Heart series I felt like the story took a backseat to the history, etc. and it was like I was sitting through a history lesson I really didn't want or need.

But then Jin showed up. And it was all good for me from that point on.

05/16/24: Guilty pleasure reread ❤️❤️❤️

Kabore throwing Logan, Jin, and Ilia out will always be funny. 😂

I adore Domin Thorne and Yuri Kosa. Yuri for his unwavering loyalty to Jin and Logan and his unrequited love for Domin, and Domin for having the best character development in this series.

Of all the books in this series, this has all the most fun and amusing banters for sure. I find Domin's innate intelligence and leadership to be a great contrast to his cluelessness in all things politics. His Maverick ways would always be opposite to Logan's adherence to the laws but it's one of the reasons why this book was so good.

Domin finally meeting and holding Ilia was an 'awwwe' moment but my favorite part, as always, involved Crane who's clever enough to use his trump card to win a challenge. I have such a soft spot for that dear man. ❤️ And of course, Domin teaming up with Jin creating trouble will always be a beautiful disaster. Logan and Yuri seriously need to reign those two in half the time. 🤭

Classic Mary, with a first person hero and extensive world building, but also a demonstration of expanding skill. Domin's voice is growly, irritable, floundering and wise, and while the action and pacing is nonstop because that's what Mary does, the dynamic of Domin and Yuri is very, very different than the Jin/Logan dynamic. Domin *isn't* sure everything he does is right, and he does NOT commit to action first and take counsel later. He's wise enough to listen to the people around him and to do what's best for everyone else before thinking about his own ego. (As much as I loved Jin, that was Jin's big failing.) He needs his mate simply because that's what married people DO--they yearn for the other half of their souls. The sex is scorching, and the promise for new adventures is delightful.

There's not much to say here, except that I really enjoyed this installment. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the refreshing change in main character narrative. I'm a huge fan of Domin, and as such, I was chomping at the bit to get to this particular story. Obviously, it was well worth my early week marathon reading, because I smashed this baby out in a matter of hours.

Yes, this book has no plot. Yes, my eyes still kind of glaze over when they're talking about werepanther society and laws and shit. And yes, I think they're just pulling these laws out of their asses as they go along (and by they I mean MC).

Not as ridiculously entertaining as the first 3 in the series. Neither one of the MCs were sufficiently Jory-like but each had a sprinkling of certain characteristics. It was kind of Calmes-lite, but it was fun and funny. I enjoyed it.

Thanks for the fun BR, Rosa, Jen and Jenni!

So, a lot of what I questioned in my review of the last book was addressed in this one, so #Points! for that. But it still had issues...

Which means the story was probably a 3.5 Star read but because I was so happy to hear Sean Crisden narrating again, I gave it another half star for the audio. Gawd, I forgot how much I missed his voice.

Here I go again folks with the swoon-fest over this series, I know my reviews for this series are probably all sounding the same. Can’t help it my friends, I am in love with this series and i must shout it for everyone to hear!!

I love love love Domin and Yuri!! OMG OMG OMG!!! And what is surprising for me is i didn’t expect to love them this much. I went into this book a little heartsick and sad about no more Jin and Logan. While i was sure they would make the occasion appearance, I started reading this book missing them. Well I am happy to report that as I started reading Domin’s story my sadness turned to excitement and later I was swooning again!

Domin, had won the honor challenge and is now the semel-aten, leader of the werepanther world. After the corrupt rule of the former leader, Domin has his work cut out for him. Feeling overwhelmed and unsure of himself he sets out to bring them all into the current century. While this book was exciting and emotional and fast paced, it lack a little of the intensity I found in the previous books. It is not a criticism of this story, just an observation. I loved the banter between the characters, I enjoyed how Domin never took himself or his position to seriously, it never went to head. Domin was constantly seeking advice from the people he trusted, it definitely increased my enjoyment of this book. i found myself laughing more then in previous books in this series. This book contained scheming, danger, a visit from an ex and challenges to Domin’s position, and an appearance by Jin and Logan (OH YAY OH YAY).

What I also want to say is Mary Calmes definitely knows how to write a sex scene that draws me in emotionally. What I found in this book like the others in this series was an emotional connection i don’t often find. While of course reading hot sex scenes is always a good thing, when you can feel the emotions between two characters it definitely makes it 10 times better. And Domin and Yuri, like Jin and Logan had that deep emotional connection i was seeking.

I am so sad this is the last book for now in this series. I will be eagerly waiting for the next one, I hope I don’t have to wait long. This has been a hellva roller-coaster ride, and as I pull into the platform to step off, i do it with a huge satisfying smile on my face. Lord this was fun!!

Review posted at The Armchair Reader and is for the whole series up to this point.

3.5 stars

Change of Heart and it's sequel, Trusted Bond were my first introduction to Mary Calmes' work. As two (CoH & TB) of my very first reviews -- ever -- and in the first week at my gig reviewing at Jessewave, I hadn't quite settled into my own rating system. So I wasn't sure if my feelings and ratings would stay the same (then, 4.25 stars and 5 stars, respectively), because I didn't have much to compare them with. I hadn't even joined Goodreads at that point! It was later December of 2010.

I knew though, that if I were going to get caught up on this series and read the third book and the fourth, released just this week, that I'd need to read them all again. As much as I love a book, you have to understand, I very, very rarely re-read romance books. There are just so many that I have waiting to read for the first time that I rarely allow myself the luxury of going back to a favorite book. It has to be good, really good. So I was so happy to find out that I loved these books the second time around just as much as the first. And with a whole different arsenal in my possession -- better analytical thinking and also a much wider breadth of experience reviewing m/m in particular -- I found that I appreciated this series in ways I couldn't the first time I read it. But really, I just loved Jin and Logan again and I doubt they'll ever stop being one of my favorite couples.

I love Mary's work, and in the past I've said that her paranormal/fantasy work has been so so while I tend to adore every contemporary she writes (which is the opposite of how I usually feel about romances). But re-reading this series has made me change my mind about that. This is my favorite series of Mary's over all of them, and it is very paranormal.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this series, it works as a trilogy. The latest book, number four, deals with all of the same characters but with a change in focus from Jin and Logan to Domin and Yuri, two favorites from the first three books. It is a shifter world, focused on big cats and here's your class on werepanther 101. We meet Jin in the beginning of the first book and he admits himself to be a "reah". On the run with his best friend Crane (called a "beset", meaning a companion of a "reah"), we don't learn much about what Jin's identity as a "reah" means other than that he's extremely rare and everyone wants a piece of him, especially "semels". A "semel" is the leader of a pack or tribe and are always male. They all wish to find their true mate (a "reah"), which is always a woman, but they're so rare that most of them end up having to take a "yareah", or a chosen mate. Now you see why Jin is so unique -- he's the only male "reah" known in existence.

In typical Mary Calmes' fashion, they have enemies, lots of enemies. Everyone covets Jin so much, for his unique qualities and simply for the heart that pulls people to him which makes up a "reah", that they'll do just about anything to separate the two. The first three books follow the two as they travel the world making enemies and allies. Two of those are Yuri and Domin, from their tribe in Lake Tahoe. Yuri is Logan and Jin's "sheseru", the physical arm of the "semen" (Logan). He is in charge of security, specifically he is Jin's protector. Domin was once a "semel" just like Logan, but due to his bad choices lost his tribe and was assimilated into Logan and Jin's, becoming the "maahes" of the tribe, or the prince, whom acts as an emissary to the tribe. They have their own sub-plots during the series, only to be brought together at the end of the third book. Crucible of Fate takes over their story in Sobek, Egypt, their new home. But that is getting ahead of things!

There is something about these books that grabbed me and still hasn't let go. I could analyze and critique, but the basis of it is that I love these books. And even though there are books I love more than others (in particular, the first and third), I know now that I'll always love this series. She's taking it to places that I never, ever expected, but I love it. It isn't something that is just good, it is addicting, and I was sad when I finished Crucible of Fate.

With this last book in particular, I have to admit that I found it just a little disappointing. Right off there is an acclimatization necessary because it is the first story not about Jin and Logan. No matter how much I love Yuri and Domin, I was sad to say goodbye (even though they're still there, sometimes) to Jin and Logan. Of course, I warmed up to getting their own story, but Domin's voice is quite different and much more pessimistic, which took some time to get used to. All of that I could work with -- it simply takes time after you've been with another character's POV for so long. I did wish, however, that there was more romance in this book. So much of the love story between Yuri and Domin happens off page in the third book, when they're first getting together, and then in Crucible of Fate their lives are focused on more pressing issues. But I missed that connection. They were together in a minority of the book and if I didn't think that there would be another sequel coming (I see no reason it will stop here), then I'd be more upset. I'm hoping that with the way this one ended, that the next one will have them together for more time. And I'm certainly excited about the direction the series is starting to take for Domin, as well as getting to know quite a big part of the world that we weren't privy to before.

So, while I loved this book because I loved the series, I'm more excited about the next book than I am about this one. It was satisfying enough, but since my expectations from the series are so high, it didn't quite meet up. Also, reading directly after the third book made it difficult to live up to. Honored Vow, which I read for the first time in this read, I absolutely loved :)

So, please read this series! It is such a guilty pleasure read and there should be no negative connotations with that phrase here. It is simply that they are a pure pleasure to read and now that I know I'll love them again and again, I'll just have to make sure to read them all again the next time another book comes out.

So much better than Honored Vow which was just way too violent for me, but…well, I liked it actually, quite a lot…well, once I was able to just stop hearing blah blah blah with all the terms and names…so much to study before reading, lol! Good thing there is a Glossary!

Some stuff was just so different it at times felt odd, off, I dunno. Yuri? He turned into a marshmallow in this one. The challenges? Thank God no one was murdering innocent people like in the last one but these were like field day in elementary school. I know, there is no pleasing me. This has been pointed out already :) At least Jin was still running away from Logan so that felt familiar.

During the BR we were all trying to figure out who Jory was in this story and it kept going back and forth between Domin and Yuri, I think in the end I am saying both of them.

Oh, Domin’s ex? How the fuck is he even Logan’s brother? I hate him.

Overall I really liked it a lot.

I am scared to death to read the next one. Scared to death.

Thank you, thank you Otila, Rosa and JL for the Buddy Read!

I knew going into this book would be a disaster. It's not that it wasn't good, it's just that I simply do not care for Domin Thorne as a Semel-aten and I didn't like how changed Yuri Kosa become in this book. I didn't even recognize him from the previous books. He was like a new person. I also, had extremely bad thoughts for this book going in, simply because I hadn't gotten over how things ended in book #3; I was/am still mad as fuck. I didn't like, at all, how the family got separated. All that was built, just went away. And Jin Church and Logan Church would have to build everything up again. I also hated how people treated and talked about Jin, Ilia and Logan. Unacceptable. You should all know though, that I only read this one because I apparently needed to read this one to read the next one, which is about Jin and Logan, who btw, I want to read about.

Loved and loathed this book.

Loved because Domin finally go to be loved for who he is and that the station or title he holds. Loved because his mate finally got his man and all that involved.

Loathed because of what I am naming "The Mary Calmes Separation Stipulation", or now TMCSS for short.

But loved for all that this was. For all that Domin has gone through and become. For all that he realizes he is and how strong he is with those he trusts and loves beside him.

But loathed for one certain fucking panther who keeps showing up and who I want to strangle. There is a chance for minor redemption but I swooned over you once and only once dude. You fucked over a good man one too many times, I can't forgive and forget.

Anyway. This was a great addition to the series. I love Domin and his sekhem and their new path to breathe new life into ancient laws.

Going into this book I haven't had a clue that it will have a different pov than the rest of the series, but it was such a relief!
Although I love Jin, I probably don't have enough fingers to count how many times his relationship with Logan made me uncomfortable. Plus I felt like their story was over and I really didn't want to read about them having kids.

Domin and Yuri on the other hand...! Even if the plot was weaker, it was so nice to read about a 100% healthy and stable relatinship. Can't wait to see where the last book will bring me.

Let’s see… this one was mainly informative and highly laughable… and that’s being honest

“I’m sorry , my lord, it had to be done. I Know the semel-.netjer and his reah are like your family, but really, between the baby and the volume of their fights and their-“He cleared his throat .” other activities, they disrupted everyone here quite effectively. Your entire household needed them out”

description

This follows the story of Domin as the new Semel-aten of the werepanther world, right after the ending of the trials told in the third book…so we get to see ALL HIS TRANSITION to his new position
description

He has claimed Yuri Kosa as his mate, even though in that moment he wasn’t even sure of it.
I barely wanted to be parted from him. I would cut out my tongue before I admitted it to him. Confessing my heart was not something I did.

description
description

ok, the main characters here? is actually one, is only Domin…it also should be Yuri, but he´s absent almost the 70% of the book, so Domin will have to endure a few intents of assassination against him, an stubborn and bothering ex, and his adaptation to all the luxuries, authority and protection of his new tittle. But given that he has Logan as model to follow… he’ll be slowly discovering his own path to rule.
”Logan doesn’t depend on anyone; you don’t have that luxury.”
“He depends on you,”I reminded him.
He shook his head. “Not really. Logan can make decisions and not have to count on anyone. You’re more thoughtful that he is.”

But in the meanwhile … this was his answer:
You could have knock me over with a feather. I had completely missed it

This wasn’t even remotely close to what I was expecting… no passion, no action, no…nothing interesting except that…well the reason I was crying at the end of the 2nd book was a bit improved here, ‘cause looks like the characters weren’t absolutely agree with the decision at the end,so… we get to see at least one the member going back at Jin’s side.
description
description

We also have a glimpse of Jin and Logan, we actually get to read a whole description of Jin’s transformation from Domin’s POV… what else? I can only say that this is merely about Domin and everything he goes through in order to understand what he needs to do
The difference was like night and day-he could be feral one moment and the epitome of heart and home the next.

And still more...nope, this one's not Jin & Logan...it's...

Domin and Koren...nope, close but no cigar...Koren screwed it up again. This time it's Domin and Yuri and for as much as I have come to love Jin and Logan...a story of Domin and Yuri is just what the doctor ordered.

I really loved this one. it was nice to get a story that gave a different perspective to the werepanther world and the aftermath of events that occurred in the previous book 'Honored Vow' and yet still included a bit of Jin and Logan as well.

Sean Crisden was once again the narrator for this one and thankfully Crane lost of bit of his Fozzie Bear sounding voice so I definitely enjoyed things more. I love that Domin ended up with Yuri and not Koren.

Yuri proved to be the mate that Domin needed he's strong and supportive and his love for Domin is solid giving Domin the foundation he needs to become the amazing leader that his friend Logan believes him to be.

This one was just full of awesome and win for me. Definitely a favorite in this series.

Sometimes there's just nothing better than some comfort food and revisiting an old favourite. It's been nearly 2 years since I read the first 3 books in this series and Crucible of Fate was a wonderful reunion with the characters in these stories.

I find the writing in these books just flows like a gentle steam there's just a calming peaceful flow to everything. It's comfort food and the need for the familiar whatever it is Mary Calmes puts it onto the page and my mind and my heart soak it up and I always sigh contentedly when the story has been absorbed.

I really needed this I was feeling a little frayed around the edges and my brain needed to slow down focus and just enjoy.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

4.5 Stars

So Mary Calmes did that thing that sometimes terrifies me as a reader. She took a brilliant series and wrote a book that didn’t revolve around the characters that we have grown to love, the two people we think of as that series. This is Domin and Yuri’s story and whilst it is similar it is different. The same laws, the same problems but two very different panthers!

At the end of Honored Vow it became clear a plan had been hatched between Logan and Domin which would see Domin regain his status as a semel and not just any semel but semel-aten. Under Logan’s care and guidance during the last few years Domin is now a completely different person and was very much ready to rule his own tribe again.

With Yuri at his side as his mate Domin should have everything he needs but he finds being in charge again with so many responsibilities both difficult and terrifying. He is not the confident ruler that Logan is and as he tries to manage everything instead of using his team things start to get away from him.

Like the rest of the series Mary Calmes doesn’t ice over the violence that exists in the world she has built. Finally we get to see justice served to Jin and Crane’s fathers, in fact it is one of the first things Domin deals with on his return to Sobek, and it is both violent and swift. As Domin uncovers more of his predecessor’s failings it becomes clear that not all panther tribes are as loving or as safe as Logan’s and punishment must be dealt out when the harsh realities come to light.

We do get to catch up with Jin and Logan in this story, in fact Jin appears to once again save the day when his beset calls upon him to help. There is treachery in the ranks of Sobek, those who would like to see Domin’s death but there are also unexpected allies who are keen to see him succeed. Domin must relax into his role and trust himself and those around him if he is to become the leader people believe he can be.

Books 1 & 2 Change of Heart & Trusted Bond of the series were more romance and less about the intricacies of the werepanther society. Book 3 Honored Vow was a bit more of an immersion into the society but there was still enough romance to satisfy my HEA addiction.

This book (Book 4) is a total immersion into the werepanther society. If like me you were not paying attention to the society details in the first three books, then like me, you will be very lost in this book!

The author builds an amazingly intricate and complicated world but it was just too much work for me.....all I wanted was the romance.
