When Morwenna Morgan defies her brother's orders and rescues a shipwreck victim from a Cornish beach, she doesn't expect an instant attraction to the injured stranger. This is the kind of man Morwenna can imagine falling for—not the unpleasant suitor her brother's forcing on her!
Except the stranger is Lord Rupert Melford—a government agent sent to entrap the Morgan family! He has to believe that Morwenna is part of a smuggling plot, but her sweet nature and devotion to nursing him speak only of her innocence….
Linda was born in Swindon. Her family moved to Ely in Cambridgeshire when she was nine, and Linda attended the local school but left at fifteen to work as a hairdresser in her father's business. She was married at eighteen and ran her own hairdressing business for some years before moving to Cambridge, although Linda has now moved to somewhere a bit quieter in Cambridgeshire. She started writing in 1976, combining this with helping her husband to run his antique shop.
Writing as Anne Herries, Linda won the 2004 RNA Romance Award and the Betty Neels Trophy. She lives in Cambridgeshire. After many happy years of taking their holidays in Spain she and her husband, now have a second home in Norfolk. Being only a short drive, they can visit for a few days at a time, which suits their busy lifestyle these days. They are only just across the road from the sea, and can see it from their windows. At home and at the sea they enjoy watching the wildlife and have many visitors to their gardens, particularly squirrels. Anne loves watching their antics and spoils both them and her birds shamelessly. She also loves to see the flocks of geese and other birds flying in over the sea during the autumn, to winter in the milder climes of this country. Anne loves to write about the beauty of nature and sometimes puts a little into her books, though they are mostly about love and romance. She writes for her own enjoyment and to give pleasure to her readers.
Supposedly a historical, dint sound too authentic to me.
A titled aristocrat in the British royal court is sent on a mission to save the throne from a murder conspiracy. The man comes to the Cornish coast, and promptly loses his memory and gets drowned in the sea !!
Now , who better than a naive, virginal heroine to pull him out of the sea and nurse him back to health. Yep, our angelic, altruist girl does that and errr, a lot more. She gives herself to give him, knowing fully well that the guy has a dubious background, doesn't remember a thing. He could be married for all you know !!
After all the tender loving care that he gets, he does get back his memory. He is a lord, a marquis, a something !! Oh, so now he decides that the girl is mistress material , cannot be wife. Thankfully he doesn't do it happily. He is rankled about it, but decides that way nevertheless. Decides to take her to London and set her up in a house as a kept woman.
Our virginal angel is OK with this arrangement ! Why ? Love you see. And another reason being, her rogue brother who is a co-conspirator in the king's murder plot. Sisters of murderers cant dream of becoming wives, so she settles for what she can get.
There are some encounters between the hero and the rogue brother, and the angelic sister is hurt in the turmoil. To add to the woes, hero'es nasty mummy comes calling and calls the angel names. Well, a mistress can only be called that, no ?
All the while, the hero'es conscience has been needling him. Reminding him that the virgin angel was pure as snow when it all started. So she really is a 'lady'. And definitely wifey material. By the time he comes to this brilliant conclusion, the girl runs away, after the mummy meeting.
Now, its time for the hero to pour his heart out. And profess divine undying love. Yep, and a baby is on its way. And a HEA.
The story was too rational, too much about proprieties. And less about genuine emotion.
Anyway, not a bad read. Just not good enough to remember. 3 stars.
