Stars of the New Curfew

About the author

Poet and novelist Ben Okri was born in 1959 in Minna, northern Nigeria, to an Igbo mother and Urhobo father. He grew up in London before returning to Nigeria with his family in 1968. Much of his early fiction explores the political violence that he witnessed at first hand during the civil war in Nigeria. He left the country when a grant from the Nigerian government enabled him to read Comparative Literature at Essex University in England.

He was poetry editor for West Africa magazine between 1983 and 1986 and broadcast regularly for the BBC World Service between 1983 and 1985. He was appointed Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts at Trinity College Cambridge in 1991, a post he held until 1993. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1987, and was awarded honorary doctorates from the universities of Westminster (1997) and Essex (2002).

His first two novels, Flowers and Shadows (1980) and The Landscapes Within (1981), are both set in Nigeria and feature as central characters two young men struggling to make sense of the disintegration and chaos happening in both their family and country. The two collections of stories that followed, Incidents at the Shrine (1986) and Stars of the New Curfew (1988), are set in Lagos and London.

In 1991 Okri was awarded the Booker Prize for Fiction for his novel The Famished Road (1991). Set in a Nigerian village, this is the first in a trilogy of novels which tell the story of Azaro, a spirit child. Azaro's narrative is continued in Songs of Enchantment (1993) and Infinite Riches (1998). Other recent fiction includes Astonishing the Gods (1995) and Dangerous Love (1996), which was awarded the Premio Palmi (Italy) in 2000. His latest novels are In Arcadia (2002) and Starbook (2007).

A collection of poems, An African Elegy, was published in 1992, and an epic poem, Mental Flight, in 1999. A collection of essays, A Way of Being Free, was published in 1997. Ben Okri is also the author of a play, In Exilus.

In his latest book, Tales of Freedom (2009), Okri brings together poetry and story.

Ben Okri is a Vice-President of the English Centre of International PEN, a member of the board of the Royal National Theatre, and was awarded an OBE in 2001. He lives in London.

"When I looked round she had disappeared. I began, I think, to hallucinate. I saw the secrets of the town dancing in the street: young men with the disease that melted their faces, beautiful young girls with snakes coming out of their ears, I saw skeletons dancing with fat women."

A collection of six stories by Ben Okri, he is a different storyteller.

This was my second book of Okri. I had first read him in his Booker-winning novel, The Famished Roadand I loved that book. Mostly his characters sit on the fence, between the real and spirit world. Here in this collection too, he has heavily deployed the same adroitness. Stories of Africa, of Lagos and of Nigeria, and of another world, I say!

Writing is lucid and stories impact you, they are not as spooky somewhere yet their spirits can bring on some twitchiness. The stories are balanced and woven around the normal city and village lives in Nigeria. Wartime events, poverty, selling medicines by a salesman and bridges and city and jungles and all the worldly things but also the taste of myth and fables!

It depends on the taste, if you have a liking for the concept of a writer who writes modern age tales but in fairy tale style, with some horror, with some apparition, then I guess you may like the book. Stories are fast-paced and written in a very simple language and can find yourself tingling with eagerness and delirium.

This collection of short stories confirms that the surreal style of The Famished Road, which consistently blurs the boundaries between the material and spirit worlds, was not a one-off. This collection includes six stories, of which four rely heavily on the same technique. So we meet an unemployed man who flees the crumbling city into the bush and almost loses himself in the spirit world ('Worlds that Flourish'); a patent-medicine salesman whose product keeps sending him into the spirit world ('Stars of the New Curfew'); a singer whose unkindness towards his dying girlfriend draws after her ('When the Lights Return'); and a palm tapper who is thrown into the other world after a fall from a tree. Okri does surreal well, but it all runs together. Of these stories, Stars of the New Curfew was the funniest, longest, and offered the most trenchant critique of a world in which everybody is on the make.

The two other stories I found powerful. In the first ('In the Shadow of War'), a young boy discovers the eclipse of human decency in wartime. The other ('In the City of Red Dust') explores the grinding misery of poverty, the way it tears people's basic decency down, but also the way people can still give of themselves in a form of grace that transcends their degradation. It is not a hopeful story, but it does show the humanity and virtues of its deeply flawed characters.

The eponymous story in this book is a wonderful, surreal, searing tale of exploitation in its many forms. I wonderful read, even if the other stories didn’t quite work for me.

"When chaos is the god of an era....."

If we except the first story, "In the Shadow of War", which seemed slight and unworthy of the rest, STARS OF THE NEW CURFEW contains five topnotch stories by Nigerian author Ben Okri. To use a `national' adjective like that is sometimes to say everything and sometimes to say nothing. In this case, it is obvious that though you can take Okri out of Nigeria (he lives in London), you cannot take Nigeria out of Okri. The gritty, sweaty, illogical desperation of his characters, hanging on to life by hook or by crook in the slums of Lagos or provincial towns, is so vivid that so-called "magical realism" seems more like "realism". The smell of sewerage and dried fish, the clash of traffic, drums and trumpets, the spieling of patent medicine salesmen, the dust, the heaps of garbage, the roar of military trucks and aircraft drown out your disbelief. Okri is the Tutuola of the modern age, a more controlled, a more polished Yoruba tale spinner with none of the hopes of the more-placid colonial era when independence was only a goal. Published after 28 years of freedom, these stories reflect the chaos, the corruption, the lost chances and the waste of human abilities and natural resources. Maybe they are just stories, maybe they are a protest from the soul---what has happened to our Nigeria ? The military governor's birthday where one of the crazily zooming planes celebrating the occasion crashes into a slum----the competition of two wealthy families in a small town which takes the form of a money-throwing contest in which poor and unlucky fellow citizens abase themselves by fighting over notes and coins---the irony of a bewildered Rastafarian from the long-vanished diaspora, returned to preach and cry out "Africa, we counting on yuh !" in the streets of chaos and ruin. People live on their wits, people live at the expense of others' health and earnings, violence rules, the beautiful girl will die, life is cheap, yet dearly held for all that. The last story, "What the Tapster Saw", ripped from the same cloth as Tutuola's "The Palm-wine Drinkard", is a tale as told by the traditionally powerless to deliver subtle messages about affairs in the real world without pointing any fingers. It can be a message for Nigeria, it can be just the fantastic wanderings of a storyteller's fevered brain. These are wonderful stories, Okri is a worthy addition to the pantheon of Nigerian literature. "There are several ways to burn in your own fire."(p.191) Here they are.

The first (In the Shadow of War), third (In the City of Red Dust), and fourth (Stars of the New Curfew) stories were the best of the six. In these stories I found the surrealism added to the tenor of horror and social decay pervading the stories without overpowering them. The surrealism was grounded in the characters' own understanding/schema of the world around them: the otherworldly horror of chaos gods complimented the daily horrors of violence, poverty, and military dictatorship besetting the people. In the remaining three stories, while the surrealism is still rooted in characters' schema, I found the surreal dream sequences overpowered the story, with characters dream-visiting the land of the dead and returning over several pages. I wished these dream sequences were linked a little more to the characters' lives, as they were in the other stories.

А ако със спирането без всякакъв режим ток умират и музиката, и романтиката? В свят който господстват войниците, знахарите, страхът, суеверието и духове във всевъзможни психеделични превъплъщения. Но не могат да задушат почтеността, приятелството и любовта. Нигерия през 80-те в разказите на Бен Окри.

This book was actually published before I was born. How cool!

Sadly This one wasn’t a good one for me. It’s a collection of short stories- 6 stories actually and I actually only enjoyed reading ONE!

It’s a very bizzare book. I’m not big on books with unrealistic magic and just nothing substantial. Like the stories were so pointless it was a bit ridiculous. If you enjoyed this book, we need to talk because I want to know what’s really going on with you?

Excellent book of short stories about modern life in Africa, by an African. It's a bit demoralizing for those of us Westerners that have never lived in Africa--but there is a magical element to the book too. Utterly addicting. I'll share it with you if you can't find it at the library/book store, but I want it back!

பணத்திற்காக அடிக்கடி ரத்த தானம் செய்பவர்கள், 5-6 இராணுவ வீரர்களால் பாலியல் தாக்குதலுக்கு ஆளாகி உடலுறவை வெறுத்து வேறு சில இராணுவ வீரர்கள் தன்னை நெருங்குவதைக் கண்டு தன் மணிக்கட்டை அறுத்துக் கொள்ளும் பெண், நாட்டை ஆள்பவரின் பிறந்த நாள் கேளிக்கைகளை காணச் சென்று இறுதியில் வானூர்திகள் தூவிச் செல்லும் துண்டுப் பிராசார காகிதங்களை பசியோடு தங்கள் வெறுமை சூழ்ந்த மனைகளுக்கு எடுத்துச் செல்பவர்கள் என கொடுங்கனவாக உருவெடுக்கும் தங்கள் புற/அக உலகங்களின் பிழற்சியை முதல் முறையாக காண நேர்ந்த பின், ஒன்றிலிருந்து தப்ப இன்னொன்றில் சிக்கி, எவ்வுலகிலும் ஆசுவாசம் அடையமுடியாத இக்கட்டில் உள்ள மனிதர்களை இந்தக் கதைத் தொகுப்பில் பார்க்கிறோம்.

வெளிப்படையாக பெயர் குறிப்பிடப்படாவிட்டாலும் 'Laos' நகர்/ அதன் புறநகர்/ கிராமப்புற பகுதிகளே இந்தக் கதைகளின் களன் என்று புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம். மூன்றாம் உலக நாடுகளைப் பற்றிய தங்கள் கருத்துக்களை மேற்குலகு தகமவைத்துக் கொள்ள/ உறுதிப்படுத்திக் கொள்ள பயன்படும், அவர்களை வாசக இலக்காகக் கொண்ட எழுத்துக்கள் என்று தேசியக் கோணத்தில் இத்தொகுதியை ஒருவர் விமர்சிக்கலாம். அப்படிச் செய்வதெனில் 'The Wizard of the Crow' முதல் 'தர்பாரி ராகம்' வரையிலான நாவல்களையும் இதே கோணத்திலிருந்தே எளிதில் புறந்தள்ள முடியும். தொகுப்பின் களத்தில் வாழ்ந்தவர் ஒருவரே, அவரும் கூட தன் அனுபவங்களுக்கேற்ப மட்டுமே இந்தக் களத்தை பற்றி கூற முடியும் என்ற நிலையில் அத்தகைய விமர்சனத்தை இத்தொகுதி குறித்து அவசர கதியில் முன்வைக்க முகாந்திரம் இல்லை.

ஜனநாயக நடைமுறையற்ற அதிகார துஷ்ப்ரயோகத்தை, அதன்கீழ் மக்கள் நசுக்கப்படுவதை முகத்திலறையும் விதமாக நேரடியாகவோ அல்லது பகடியில் பொதிந்து வைத்தோ இந்தக் கதைகள் பேசுவதில்லை. "Everything shimmered like mirages in an omnipotent heat" என்று ஒக்ரி விவரிப்பதற்கேற்ப, எங்கும்/ எப்போதும் நிறைந்திருக்கும் வெப்பம், அவ்வெப்பத்தினூடாக அன்றாட வாழ்வை கடத்த முயலும் மக்கள் திரள், அத்திரளின் மூச்சடைக்க வைக்கும் வியர்வை வீச்சம், இவையனைத்தையும் மட்டுப்படுத்த முயன்று அதில் பரிதாபமாக தோற்கும் மின்விசிறிகள் என்ற மெய்ம்மையுடன் புறஉலகு உருவாக்கும் நெருக்கடி இட்டுச் செல்லும் சுய அழிப்பு பாதையின் - பாத்திரங்களின் அகக் கொந்தளிப்புக்கான குறியீடாக உள்ள - கானல் நீராக தோற்றமளிக்கும், மீன் மழை பொழிதல், நீர் பெருக்கெடுத்துச் செல்லும் சாக்கடைகளில் மிதந்து வரும் குழந்தைகளின் உடல்கள், மூன்று தலை மனிதர்கள், என்ற இணை உலகை முயங்கச் செய்கிறார். இத்தகைய மிக விரிவான காட்சிப் படிமங்களை ஒக்ரி உருவாக்குவது அவர் எழுத்தின் வெற்றி என்றாலும், அவற்றுள் அவர் பொதிந்து வைத்திருப்பதை வாசகன் கடந்து சென்று, அவனைச் சலனப்படுத்தும் காட்சி பிம்பங்களாக மட்டுமே இக்கதைகள் தங்கிவிட வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

'Stars of the new Curfew' கதையில் இதை விரிவாக பார்க்கலாம். இதன் கதைசொல்லி, முறையாக பரிசோதனை செய்யப்படாமல் சந்தைப்படுத்தப்படும் மருந்துகளின் விற்பனையாளராக உள்ளார். இம்மருந்துகளால் பல மோசமான பக்க விளைவுகள் உருவாகின்றன (குடல் புழுக்களை அழிக்க அளிக்கப்படும் மருந்து குடலையே வெளியேற்றும் அளவிற்கு சக்திவாய்ந்ததாக உள்ளது). கதையின் ஆரம்பத்தில் கதைசொல்லி மருந்து விற்கும் பேருந்துகளில் உள்ள கூட்ட நெரிசல், விற்பனை செய்ய அவர் செய்யும் கோமாளி சேஷ்டைகள், அவர் முதலாளியின் விசித்திர நடவடிக்கைகள் (விற்பனைக்குச் செல்லும் முன் அனைத்து விற்பனையாளர்களுக்கும் வலுக்கட்டாயமாக அவர்கள் விற்பனை செய்யும் மருந்தையே புகட்டுவது) என அவல நகைச்சுவையோடு
நகரும் கதை, கதைசொல்லி தான் விற்பனை செய்யும் மருந்துகளால் பலர் பாதிக்கப்படுவது குறித்த கனவுகளால் (முதலாளி இவர் உடலின் பாகங்களை ஏலம் விடுகிறார்) உறங்க முடியாத அளவிற்கு அல்லலுறுவது என வேறு தடத்திற்கு மாறுகிறது. பிறகு ஒரு நிகழ்வின் பாதிப்பிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க தான் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த நகருக்குச் செல்லும் அவர், தன் பால்ய கால நண்பர்களை சந்திக்கிறார். இரு பெரும்புள்ளிகளின் போட்டிக்களமாக உள்ள அவர் நகரில், மாந்த்ரீகம், அதைச் சார்ந்த சடங்குகளின் பின்னணியில் இன்னொரு யுத்தமாக ஒரு விழா நடக்கிறது. அதில் அவர் காணும் காட்சிகள் அவரைத் துரத்த திரும்பி வந்து மீண்டும் அதே மருந்து விற்பனை வேலையில் சேர்கிறார்.

யதார்த்தமும், அதிகற்பனையும் மாறி மாறி வரும் இந்தக் கதையில் முதல் பதிவாக அதன் காட்சிப் பிம்பங்களே நிற்கின்றன. ஆனால் வேறு வேலை கிடைக்காததால்தான் இதில் சேர்ந்ததாகச் சொல்லும் கதைசொல்லி, "Everybody seemed to need a cure for something" என்றுரைக்கும்போது, அவரது இயலாமையை மட்டுமல்ல, சிகிச்சை மனிதர்களின் உடலுக்கும்/ உள்ளத்திற்கும் மட்டுமல்ல, அந்நாட்டிற்கே தேவை என்பதாக புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம்.
மீண்டும் வேலைக்குச் சேர்ந்தப் பின் அவரைத் துரத்திய துர்க்கனவுகள் நீங்குகின்றன. ஆனால் "I had begun to see our lives as a bit of a nightmare. I think I prefer my former condition," என்று கதை முடியும்போது, தூக்கத்தைத் தொலைத்து, பயங்கர காட்சிகள் தோன்றும் கனவிலி வாழ்வைவிட அன்றாட வாழ்வு அதிகம் அச்சுறுத்துவதாக உள்ளது என ஒருவர் சொல்லும்போது, அவ்வாழ்வை வாசகன் எவ்வாறு புரிந்து கொள்ள?

கனவிலி வாழ்வை மேம்பட்டது என இவர்கள் எண்ணினாலும், இவ்வுலகை கைவிடவும் இவர்கள் விரும்புவது இல்லை. அதனால் தான் வாழ்விற்கும்/ இறப்பிற்கும் இடையிலேயான காலகட்டத்தை ஆன்மாக்களின் உலகில் கழிக்கும் '''Worlds that flourish' மற்றும் 'What the Tapster saw' கதைகளின் கதைசொல்லிகள் மீண்டும் நம் உலகிற்கே திரும்புகிறார்கள். வாழ்வின் விழைவே இவர்களை தாங்கள் அன்றாடம் சந்திக்கும் இடர்ப்பாடுகளைத் தாண்டிச் செல்ல உந்துகிறது. போலி மருந்து விற்பனை, ரத்த தானம், ஜேப்படி செய்வது என தார்மீக ரீதியில் இவர்கள் செய்வது சரி அல்ல என்று சொல்வதை விட, உண் அல்லது உண்ணப்படு என்ற விதியமைந்துள்ள உலகில் அவர்களின் தேர்வை இயல்பான ஒன்றாகவே பார்க்க முடிகிறது.

நனவிலிக்கும் கனவிலிக்கும் இடையிலேயான நடனம் 'When the lights return' என்ற கதையில் உச்சத்தை அடைகிறது. ஏட்டே (Edde) என்னும் இசைக் கலைஞன் தான் பிணக்கு கொண்டு கடிந்து கொண்ட , சில வாரங்களாக சென்று பார்க்காத தன் காதலியைப் பார்க்க நகரமெங்கும் மின்வெட்டு நேர்ந்துள்ள ஒரு பின்மாலை/ முன்னிரவு நேரத்தில் செல்கிறான். வாகனங்கள் கொஞ்சம் கூட நகர முடியாத போக்குவரத்து நெரிசலால், வீடுகளிலும்/ கடைகளும் ஏற்றி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள மெழுகுவர்த்திகள்/ விளக்குகளின் ஒளியில்
எங்கும் சூழ்ந்துள்ள புகை/ தூசியினூடே அவள் வீட்டிற்கு நடந்தே செல்கிறான். பெரும்பாலும் இருள் சூழ்ந்துள்ள அந்நேரத்தில் அவன் தன்னைச் சுற்றியுள்ளவற்றை பார்க்க ஆரம்பிக்கிறான் என்பது ஒரு நகைமுரண். குப்பைக்கூளத்தில் எறியப்பட்டிருக்கும் - திடீரென எழுந்து புரட்சி செய்யச் சொல்லும் - பிணம், பதாகை ஏந்திய தீர்க்கதரிசினி என அவன் காணும் காட்சிகள் அவன் மனத்தைக் குலைக்கின்றன. அதை கவனித்துக் கொண்டே இருப்பதில் இராணுவ வீரன் ஒருவனுடன் அவனுக்குப் பிணக்கு ஏற்படுகிறது. பின் அவன் எப்படியோ காதலி வீட்டை அடைய, கதை துன்ப முடிவு அடைகிறது. "It was as if a nameless instrument, whose terrible music is fashioned out of the extremes of human chaos, were being strained to cracking point." என்று அவன் எண்ணுவது அவன் நடந்து செல்லும் வழியில் காணும் ஒழுங்கின்மையை மட்டுமல்ல, இத்தொகுப்பின் அடிநாதமாக உள்ள அந்நாட்டின் எல்லாத் துறைகளிலும் பரவியுள்ள பெரும் சீர்குலைவின் பிரதிபலிப்பாகும்.


'In the Shadow of War' கதையில் ஒமொவோ (Omovo) என்ற சிறுவன் தன் கிராமத்தில் ஒரு பெண் குறிப்பிட்ட நேரத்தில் அருகில் உ���்ள காட்டிற்குள் செல்வதைக் கவனிக்கிறான். புரட்சியாளர்களுக்கு உதவி செய்பவரான அப்பெண்ணை ஒரு நாள் அவன் தொடர்ந்து செல்ல, அவள் இராணுவ வீரர்களால் கொல்லப்படுவதைப் பார்த்து பயந்து ஓடும் போது தடுமாறி விழுந்து மயங்கி விடுகிறான். மீண்டும் சுய நினைவு வந்து அலறும்போது அவன் வீட்டில் இருக்கிறான். அவன் அறைக்கு வரும் தந்தையுடன் அந்த இராணுவ வீரர்களைப் பார்த்து அவன் ஏதோ சொல்ல முயல, அவன் தந்தை இவர்கள் தான் உன்னைக் காப்பாற்றினார்கள் என்று சொல்கிறார். ஒமொவோ தான் கண்டதைச் சொல்ல ஆரம்பிக்க, அவ்வீரர்களை நோக்கி மன்னிப்புக் கோரும் சிரி���்பை உதிர்த்தவாறு அவனை படுக்கை அறைக்கு தூக்கிச் செல்கிறார் அவன் தந்தை. கதை இங்கு முடிகிறது. மகனைக் காக்க வேண்டும் என்ற அத்தந்தையின் நோக்கம் நமக்குப் புரிகிறது. அவன் கண்டது ஒரு கனவு என்றோ அவன் கண்டதை தவறாகப் புரிந்து கொண்டான் என்றோ அவனை அவர் சமாதானப்படுத்தக்கூடும். ஆனால் அதனால் சாதகமான விளைவு ஏதேனும் ஏற்படுவதற்கு வாய்ப்பு குறைவே. ஒமொவோவின் அக/புற விழிகள் திறக்கப்பட்டு விட்டன. அவற்றின் பார்வையில் செழித்து வளரப்போகும் உலகங்களுக்கான ('Worlds that flourish') அடித்தளம் அவன் அகத்தில் போடப்பட்டு விட்டது. இன்னும் சில காலத்திற்குள், இத்தொகுப்பின் மற்றப் பாத்திரங்களைப் போல, அப் புற/அக உலகங்கள் உருவாக்கும் நெருக்கடிகளை அவனும் தன் வாழ்நாள் முழுதும் எதிர்கொண்டிருப்பான்.

These stories feel alien and at the same time familiar. One is never very involved with the characters, but feels compelled to read on until the sometimes wryly hopeful, sometimes frightening finale. Okri's stories are all nightmarish in one way or another, yet also feel realistic and vibrant. I enjoyed these strange stories; they are unlike anything I have ever read.

Zes verhalen, het ene nog hallucinanter en gekmakender dan het andere. In elk verhaal is de wereld bedekt in een laag stof, vuil en groezeligheid, vieze geuren en bizarre wezens, de doden en de levenden krioelen door elkaar. De achtergrond van politieke onrust, militarisme en kolonialisme lees je tussen de regels door. Voor mij teveel symboliek en surrealisme, maar wel interessant om eens verhalen te lezen vanuit totaal andere perspectieven zoals van een medicijnverkoper, een werkloze bloeddonor, een palmboomtapper.

So surreal, felt like I was witnessing a bad dream reinvent itself over and over. It wasn't hugely clear that this is actually 6 short stories, and I thought there would be some sort of link that actually never came, if I'd have known that before I wouldn't have been a bit disappointed!

A very eye opening novel about power and class 'choosing whether to laugh or to weep' was a poignant phrase and rang very true to modern events and authoritative power in society.

An interesting collection of short stories all set in a somewhat chaotic Nigeria. All of these stories are shot through with magic realism. I enjoy the surreal approach he take but this won't be to everyone's taste. The stories throw a light on combat and day to day life. It's a good collection but not as fully realised as his longer works such as "The Famished Road".

A series of short stories set in the overpowering heat and poverty of Nigeria. In the collection Ben Okri portrays characters set in this backdrop and how they survive life among the mundane, blackouts, military curfews, the serene, the surreal and the violence
Okri's applies the full force of his imagination to true effect. His lyrical prose provides an absorbing and attentive read.

I'm rarely good at deciphering symbolism in stories, and most of this book is dreamlike wanderings in a sea of symbolism. While they don't do much for me, people with a mind for decoding and savoring this kind of stuff might find a lot to like.

I went into reading this completely blind, and it was definitely surprising! I don’t know if the stories are my kind of short stories, but they are phenomenally written and will definitely stick with me for a while, especially “worlds that flourish”.

My three favourite authors, who are widely revered as giants of world literature and have claimed numerous literary prizes to boot, are Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Haruki Murakami and Ben Okri. The literary establishment in its usual manner of boxing and labeling have tagged their writing magical realism, but the surreal actions described in their books, books like 100 Years of Solitude, 1Q84 and The Famished Road may be the reality in other climes.

Some tales tagged as urban legend which actually occur in some places may read as fiction when people hear it. In Benin City where I spent my university years, it is a sacrilege to go to the center of a market and try to bend and look through your legs. They say you would see that all who buy and sell in the market are not humans. In that position you would see some people floating, their feet not touching the ground. I never got around to trying it, but a close friend who came close said as he was about to try it, a woman appeared beside him and warned him not to.

Stories cut from this kind of cloth form the vortex in Ben Okri’s piercing collection of short stories ‘Stars of the New Curfew’. The 1991 Booker Prize winning author for The Famished Road tells tales which show an original imagination and a fabulist master at work. But, if you are wont to dismiss these tales as false and outright lies think again. In places like Nigeria, where people believe that witches exist and can fly into your room at will, and that in the forest, spirits and strange creatures live and commune, you know that Okri’s fiction may just mirror reality.

The collection opens with “The Shadow of War.” It tells the story of a boy, Omovo, who witnesses a horrendous attack on a strange woman in an unnamed village by 3 soldiers during a war. Tinged with magical realism that forms the coating of Okri’s writing, the woman is considered strange by the children in the village because they say she has no shadow and her feet do not touch the ground. And because she always goes deep in the forest. The soldiers, considering her a spy, follow her to the forest with Omovo tailing behind. The meeting of the 3 soldiers and the woman, with Omovo lurking in the bushes, leads to a shattering climax.

The second story starts pretty normal for an unnamed protagonist who has lost his job due to the austerity measures of a particular Head of State. From then on the story as well as his life turns on its head. He decides to flee the city for his village on a road trip and along the line he has an accident.

“When I was out of the wreckage I saw that the car had run into a large anthill. Thorns of the forest cut into me. I didn’t bleed. I came to a river. When I swam across I noticed it was flowing in a direction opposite to how it seemed. As I came out on the other bank the water dried instantly on me.”

Almost every animate and inanimate object in life is impregnated with stories and Ben Okri knows how to tell a good one. Not all the stories are magical realism or contain magical elements; the hero and his friend of ‘In the City of Red Dust’ sell their blood and pick pockets to earn a living. The story defines what it is to be a friend within the shambles created by evil rulers.

Scholars who have a bone to pick with Okri refer to him as a postmodern writer. The scholars have issues with how village life and the spirit world encroach into his works. It is possible what Okri is trying to show is that there is a thin line that separates the modern from the past.

In the next two short stories ‘Stars of the New Curfew’ and ‘When the Lights Return’ you see the line of the past and the modern merging together. The first one tells a tale of hustling in the city and the other tells the tale of inadequate power caused by NEPA and how it interferes with living as experienced by Ede the lead character.

The last story ‘What the Tapster Saw’ is more like a philosophical expose using transfiguration and communication with an alternate reality. You tend to see this kind of writing in Okri’s later works like Starbook.

Some of my earlier listed favourite authors have some motifs that repeatedly appear in their works. Murakami’s novels and stories contain cats, jazz music and alcohol drink mixes. Marquez’s works consist of solitude, Macando and La Violence (A civil war that occurred in Columbia.) Okri’s motifs are palm wine, transfiguration, civil war, talking animals and spirits.

Stars of a New Curfew is a good read for people who like books to be a mesh of everyday life and an in-depth look at what occurs beyond what we can see or what we refer to as real.

very good book of short stories. the writing is poetic and the stories are engaging and multi-layered. part mystical and part mundane they all chronicle the adventures of various people in nigeria where, more than almost anywhere else in africa, the imperatives of capitalist development combine and modify old ways and old modes of understanding and living. cities and rich governors stand side by side with witch doctors, herbalists and and the extreme poverty of the slums. i first heard of okri in Monsters of the Market: Zombies, Vampires and Global Capitalism and i see why david mcnally used okri's works throughout his own. very deep and very rich. from a marxist standpoint this whole book of short stories could be called a snapshot of combined and uneven development. this is what the theory means in terms of individuals living their lives in places like nigeria. very enjoyable reading.

"Zvezde novog policijskog časa" je mala zbirka kratkih priča/novela koja me je malčice smorila na neki neizreciv način, verovatno zbog atmosfere (svi su mladi, bez posla, zbog siromaštva prinuđeni da prodaju sopstvenu krv, da se prostituišu). Prosto, ne volim užasavanje nad svakodnevnom društveno - poltičkom torturom, pa ma koliko daleka da je.

Pisca sam odabrala kao predstavnika Nigerije jer mi se pored svih navedenih kriterijuma uklapao i u "čami na polici". Zapravo je reč o osobi koja je sazrela u Britaniji, ostavši posle studija u Londonu.
Nije da nije uspeo da mi dočara sliku siromašne afričke zemlje sa bizarnim dešavanjima koje su prateći element svake (vojne) diktature. Rekla bih i da je Okri solidan pisac (kao i svaki dobitnik Bukera), stil mu je ležeran, naginje ka svedenosti. Po malo je mračan, voli kafkijanske bezizlaze, tumara između košmara i jave, s tim što u prvom slučaju previše (za moj ukus, a u negativnom kontekstu) podseća na magični realizam.

Rečju, korektno, ali ništa više od toga.

This book got me into Ben Okri. The stories are trippy, vaguely political but only indirectly, and sparsely written in a good way. I like how he blends the unpredictability that you get from living in a place with a terrible government (Nigeria) with the unpredictability from living in a magical place (Africa, according to African mythology). At least, this is what I remember; it's actually been more than 10 years since I read this book...

A book of African short stories which wore me down quickly. Lots of nifty magic-realism and the extreme brutality of African military regimes make for a never-boring set of circumstances. But Okri's too-short, too-simple sentence structure drives me mad. An entire book of "Ngonko left his hut. He carried his knife in his belt. The air was still. The night was warm. He walked down the path," is more than I could take. Somehow this is "important" literature, but it stultified me.

I only read two of the stories in this collection (which is now out of print), but I was impressed with them. This is a new kind of magical realism than I've ever read before; maybe it has a different name when it comes out of Africa. Either way the language and imagery was impressive.

As I read these stories I kept on feeling like there was something I was missing. Why wasn't I enjoying these stories by a well regarded author? Perhaps Nigerian culture is too alien to me, but the absurd in the first few stories felt like a waste of paper.
