If success is determined by the number of friends one has, Kate Ryan had better make some quick. After being passed over for yet another partnership at a Miami-based law firm, Kate is just about ready to jump ship. While she works her butt off and gets nowhere, sycophants and suck-ups are quickly climbing the rungs to success.
The solution? Get on the same cruise as the man who can grant her the position she desires and make nice.
The problem? Her devilishly handsome colleague ends up on the same ship and has a different position in mind altogether.
In the end, Kate learns both how to seize her future with dignity and how to fall in love without a safety net.
Kimberly is a Canadian who lives in America, born to an English mother and an Italian father. She feels that having been exposed to so many different cultures, especially from a young age, has given her a unique perspective. Somehow everything she writes turns into some kind of a romance, usually with a few dashes of humor...and hopefully, her mother isn't the only person who thinks she's funny.
Kate is an associate in a law firm (smile) trying to become partner. Yes! I love Kate! She's smart, works hard and loves being a lawyer. :-) Unfortunately, sometimes hard work is not enough. She must learn how to suck up to the boss. ICK! No no no! It's refreshing and hilarious when Kate goes on the same cruise as her boss to become partner. She's so socially awkward! Love Kate!
While on the cruise, she keeps running into Max, also an associate in their law firm. Their relationship is different and wonderful. :-)
Honestly, Going Nowhere would get 5 stars excpept for one glaring weakness - the lack of character development. I wanted so much more background on Kate, especially. I would have happily read more if it involved some character depth and maybe an epilogue. :)
Unfortunately, it's the only novel I can find from this author. What a shame!
Kate and her friend April were just abit too...immature. I did like Max though and I think his solid, well together presence was what kept me reading until the end.
I have no clue what he saw in Kate and still don't now that I've finished. And considering Sam was meant to be running a law firm, he acted like some fifteen year old boy too and it was all just a little ridiculous.
I think if there had been less stupidity and more sweet moments, I would have really liked this.
This book was a bit difficult to rant. I liked it but at the same time I didn't like the heroine at all. The hero deserved so much better, she was always hot and cold with him and sometimes being mean when he didn't do anything to deserve that behaviour
Kate is a young lawyer who has to make partner or she will have to junk or adjust her neat, 15-year plan. To get there, her friend convinces her to go on a cruise that the boss will also be on (along with her lawyer friend Max). Things don't work quite the way she envisions, but Kate ends up satisfied and happy. This is a fairly well written chick lit book. However, some of the basic premises in the book are a bit far-fetched. A lawyer must work several years before making partner. Supreme Court justices probably have more and additional experiences than Kate could possibly have if she keeps on track with her plan. However, Kate, though sometimes rather immature, is a believable character. Still, there seem to be parts in the story alluded to by Kate that never did occur (she talks to Max about telling him about her past, which I do not remember happening) in the book. A lot of what happens on the cruise is very true to life and humorous. Besides Kate, her friends April and Max come across as rather likeable. However, her boss Sam is a real jerk, chasing after April, his admin, trying to get her into bed, planning a wedding after one good night with her, when, we find out, he is in a relationship with someone else. He also says and does things that no law firm partner would probably do. He does not seem to have the maturity or wherewithal of a law firm partner. I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a very easy and rather quick read. I hope this is the start of a series, because I would like to read more about Kate and Max and April. I received this book free from Library Thing to read and review.
Kate Ryan is an associate lawyer for a big law firm in Miami. She has fifteen year plan that she follows like religion much to the dismay of her bast friend April. Kate is hoping to make partner in her law firm but it isn't looking likely to happen. Max Walker, a fellow co-worker and secret crush, informs Kate that neither of them made the partnership short list. Kate is upset and confused by this because she believes she's doing all the right things to get ahead. April informs Kate that she doesn't know how to suck up is the reason why she's not making partner. April explains that not everyone plays by the same rules as Kate does. April's boss Sam Goldblum takes an annual vacation along with Max Walker. Kate hatches a plan to get Sam to notice her enough to put her into the running for partnership. Kate thinks her plan might work but she's not really sure at this point. Imagine Kate's surprise when she sees another side of Max but her response to him leaves much to be desired. Will Sam notice Kate? What valuable lesson will Kate learn? Will Kate admit her attraction to Max? Your answers await in Going Nowhere.
I loved all of the elements presented in this book! The characters were fascinating, real, likeable, honest, and sometimes laugh out loud funny. I felt that Kate was very approachable person that felt if you followed the rules you'd get ahead. I admired her work ethic and her stance on sucking up to bosses as well. Max is just absolutely yummy. I will definitely look for this author's work in the future.
This is a fun, quick novella that has you rooting for romance to blossom. The setting is on a cruise and the author managed to nail the atmosphere on the ship including the small staterooms, lots of food, drinks, ice skating, wild cab drivers on the islands and the wonderful karaoke night. If you have ever been on a cruise, you could laugh along with the journey of Kate Ryan knowing you have been in her shoes stumbling around an incredibly dark room, eating those free cookies that are all over the ship and getting your groove on while engaging in drunken dancing.
I hope this story continues on with the journey of Max and Kate as an official couple. I would also like to know what ended up happening with Sam and his stuffed dolphin/whale gift. Who gives a girl a stuffed dolphin?! With that being said, it was still fitting of his character.
I continue to enjoy this author's humor in her writing. If you haven't read her other book Beautiful Broken Rules, I suggest you go get it!
This light hearted romp moves quickly from office to cruise ship. Kate, a lawyer trying desperately to climb the ladder of success, abandons the idea of hard work for kissing up. Enter co-worker Max to offer contrast to the rude boss Kate is now trying to befriend. Though the end suddenly wraps up fast - this is a cute fast read. I recommend it for the beach this summer!
“Going Nowhere” a lovely way to go. I just really enjoyed this story and am hopeful for a sequel or series with one or more of the main characters. It remined me of how cooky my friends and I were in younger years, but how things always seemed to work out. To me it was the innocence of the 1970's meets "The Love Boat". Very enjoyable
