అమరావతి కధలు సత్యం శంకరమంచి రచించిన తెలుగు కధాసంపుటి . అమరావతి గ్రామం, అక్కడి ప్రజలు ఇతివృత్తంగా రచించిన ఈ 100 కధలు మొదట ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి వారపత్రికలో సుమారు రెండు సంవత్సరాలు 1975-77 మధ్య ప్రచురించబడ్డాయి.ఏ కథా కూడ ఒక పేజి కంటే ఎక్కువ ఉండేది కాదు. అప్పట్లో ముద్రణ కాయితం కరువు ఉండేది. ఆ కారణాన,ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి పత్రిక ప్రస్తుతపు వారపత్రిక సైజులో కాకుండా అందులో సగం సైజులో అంటే చందమామ మాసపత్రిక సైజులో కొన్నాళ్ళు వచ్చింది. కారణమేమయినా, కథలన్నీ కూడ రచయిత చక్కగా కుదించి వ్రాశారు. అంత చిన్నకథలో కూడ ఎంతో కథా శిల్పాన్ని ప్రదర్శించిన రచయిత సత్యం శంకరమంచి అభినందనీయులు. శంకరమంచి సత్యంచక్కని తేట తెలుగులో, సరళమైన భాషలో గ్రామీణ వాతావరణాన్ని ప్రతిబింబించుతూ, ప్రజల వేషభాషలు, ఆచారవ్యవహారాలు, కష్టసుఖాలు, జీవన విధానం గురించి విపులం వ్రాసాడు .
ఈ కథా సంపుటికి 1979వ సంవత్సరానికి ఆంధ్ర రాష్ట్ర సాహిత్య అకాడమీ బహుమతి లభించింది. ప్రముఖ సినీ దర్శకులు శ్యామ్ బెనగళ్ ఈ కథలను హిందీలో ధారావాహికగా చిత్రీకరించారు. ఈ ధారావాహిక దూరదర్శన్ లో ప్రసారం అయ్యి ఈ కథా సంపుటి ప్రాచుర్యం మరింత పెంచింది. ఈ ధారావాహిక అమరావతిలోనే చిత్రీకరించబడటం విశేషం.


The stories are about the people of the village of Amaravati and were first published in the AandhraJoyti newspaper. The series ran for two years. They follow a typical Chekhovian style.The stories are heart warming and are about people (especially from andhra)encounter in their everyday lives.
There are 101 stories in this collection, each one having a simple picture drawn by Bapu. The foreword is by Mullapudi Venkata Ramana. These stories are work of imagination and fiction, and they are inspired by incidents and folk stories related to Amaravathi.The stories, along with the pictures drawn by Bapu are considered as one of the best Telugu short story collection of 20th century. This book also won the Andhra Sahitya Academy award in 1979.
Syam Benagal made a TV serial based on these stories with the name "Amaravati ka kahaniya".

About the author

Satyam Sankaramanchi (3 March 1937 – 1987) was a storyteller, born in the tiny village of Amaravati near Guntur City, in Andhra Pradesh, India. The stories he told wove a whole new world around the tiny village of Amaravati. His style was very similar to that of the Russian writer Anton Chekhov.

ఈ పుస్తకంతో ప్రేమలో పడ్డా. ప్రేమలో అంటే ఆలా ఇలా కాదు, రాధా కి కృష్ణ ప్రేమ లా.

ఎం చెప్పాలి ఈ అమరావతి కథలు పుస్తకం గురించి. ఇన్ని రోజుల తర్వాత చదివినందుకు బాధ పడ్డ ఇప్పటికైనా చదివినందుకు ఆనందం. నాకు నేనే చేసుకున్న గొప్ప ఉపకారం.

కొన్ని నవ్విస్తాయి, కొన్ని కవ్విస్తాయ్, కొన్ని ఏడిపిస్తాయి. అద్దం ముందు నిల్చోబెట్టి ఇదిగో ఇది నువ్వు ఇదే నువ్వు అని చూపించినట్టు ఉంటాయి. మనసుని పిండేసేవి కొన్ని, తేలిక చేసేవి కొన్ని. మన చుట్టూ జరిగేవే, మనలో జరిగేవే అన్ని. ఒక్కో కథలో మంచి వాక్యాలన్నీ రాద్దామని పెన్ను పుస్తకం తీస్కొని చదవడం మొదలెట్టానా, మళ్ళి కథంతా రాయడం ఎందుకని ఓ కథ తర్వాత ఆపేసా. పేరు అమరావతి కథలైనా ఇవి తెలుగువాడి కథలు, తెలుగు వాళ్ళు గర్వాంగా ఇవిగో ఇవి మా కథలు అని చెప్పుకునే కథలు.
రెండు గంగలు కథలో వర్షపు వర్ణణ ఇలా - సిగ్గుతో నవ్వినప్పుడు బుగ్గ మీద సొట్టలు చినుకు పడ్డ చోట చిన్న గుంట అంతలో ఆ గుంట మాయం. వర్షం లో కృష్ణ కలుస్తుంటే, కృష్ణ లో వర్షం కలుస్తుంటే వర్షం లో తానూ కలిసిపోయి చేతులు విప్పార్చి హాయిగా తడుస్తుంది. ఆకాశగంగ పనికట్టుకొని ఈ నెల తల్లి ని చల్లగా కౌగిలించుకుంటుంటే ఈ మనిషన్నవాడెవడు గొడుగు అడ్డం పెట్టనికి. కృష్ణాలో పడుతున్న వర్షాన్ని కళ్ళముందు నిలిపాడు మహానుభావుడు. ఏంటి గొప్ప వర్ణన.
ఒక రోజెల్లి పోయింది లో - పిచ్చయ్య గారు ఏవి సాధించలేదు తగాదాలు తీర్చలేదు, సమస్యలు చర్చించలేదు కానీ కాలనీ తెలీకుండా కాలంలో కలిసిపోయి బతికారు అది చాలదా? చాలడం లేదు చాల మందికి. ఆ చివరి వాక్యం చాలదు జీవితాన్ని సరిగ్గా జీవించడానికి.
వరద కథ లో - ఎన్ని వరదలొచ్చినా మనిషి మనసుని కడగా లేకపోతున్నాయి. సమాజాన్ని నగ్నంగా కళ్ళ ముందు ఉంచినట్టు లేదు.
ఇలా ఎన్నో ఒక్కో కథ ఒక్కో ఆణిముత్యం, చదివిన వాళ్ళకి చదివినంత.

An amazing cornucopia of storytelling goodness.

Sathyam Sankaramanchi beautifully sets Amaravati's sights and smells and sounds, with heartfelt portrayals of people from all walks of life. Not forgetting of course, Krishnamma the river that winds through Amaravati, bearing witness to it all. The stories are delightful, funny, show a great sense of empathy, and then there are some that hit you hard for the casual cruelty. The author doesn't shy away from the fact that not all stories get a rosy ending and yet life goes on.

Equally wonderful are the illustrations by Bapu that adorn each story. They are a mastery on their own.

All in all, a great read. Read them all in go, or read a story at a time over a cup of chai. :)

I would simply place this book next to Bhagavad Gita in the hierarchy of books a person should read.
What an impeccable way of telling the stories by Satyam garu. He can spun stories out of everything and one should be blessed to read this book.

ముళ్ళపూడి వెంకటరమణ ముందుమాట వ్రాసి బాపు బొమ్మలు వేసి మనకు ఈ కథల గొప్పతనం చెప్పకనే చెప్పారు. ఈ కథలని చదవడం, అదొక గొప్ప అనుభూతి. అది ఎవరికి వారు అనుభవించాలి.

ఇందులోని ప్రతి కథ, మనసులో ఒక నునువెచ్చని మాధుర్యాన్ని మిగిల్చి వెళుతుంది. అప్పుడే అయిపోయిందా అని నిట్టూర్పు వస్తుంది. మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ చదవాలనిపిస్తుంది. బాపు బొమ్మల్ని అదేపనిగా చూడాలనిపిస్తుంది.

I am probably reading this for the third time. Picked this up for the first time when I got to know about this in a speech of a famous director. This book holds a special place in my heart as I read it to my 90-year-old grandfather during the corona pandemic.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves short stories or is interested in Telugu literature.
Gem of a collection. The writing style is engaging and the stories are beautifully crafted, leaving a lasting impression on the reader.

My absolute favourite is the first story "Varada".

What I loved most about this book is how it captures the essence of our culture and tradition.

I can read this book 100 times and still never feel bored. Don't miss this if you know Telugu.

This book is a collection of 100 short and beautiful stories. The stories reflect the life of people in and around Amaravathi on the banks of river Krishna in those days. The author fills the stories with culture, traditions, superstitions, religious beliefs, caste system, poverty, hopes etc. of those people. With beautiful Telugu language occasionally filled with poetry, there is also a good moral message in each of the stories which is applicable even today.

The best Telugu book I've read so far. Read 3-4 stories before you go to sleep or over a cup of coffee instead of rushing through it. Spend a few minutes on Bapu's sketches, reflect at the end of each story, wonder at the characters, their priorities & how their lives are intertwined with Krishna, see the vagaries of life and be amazed at the whole storytelling

This book has to be on must-read list of telugu literature.
The stories themselves are so potent and laden with life and metaphors that they warrant nothing less than reverence to the writing prowess from the reader. Late Bapu Garu's sketches for the stories elevate them to another level altogether.

వీటిలో డ్రామా ఉండదు, థ్రిల్ ఉండదు, సస్పెన్స్ ఉండదు. ఉన్నదల్లా అనుభూతి.
ఆ మాటలు మనం అన్నట్టు, ఆ ఊసులు మనం విన్నట్టు, ఆ కధల్లో మనం ఉన్నట్��ు...అనుభూతి.
వర్షాన్ని కిటికీలోనుంచి చూస్తూ ఆస్వాదిస్తున్నట్టనిపించే హాయి. వర్షపు తుంపరకి మొహం తడిసినట్టు, ఇవి చదివి మన మనసు కూడా ఆర్ద్రమవుతుంది.

సత్యం గారి కథలు అమరావతి ఒద్దు మీద కూర్చొని సరదాగా సయాంత్రం బజ్జీలు తింటున్నట్టు ఉంటాయి. అక్కడ పెద్ద దేశ సంరక్షణ గురించి చర్చలు జరుగుతాయా అంటే లేదు, ఆలా అని ఉత్తి పనికిమాలిన మాటలు కూడా కావు. జీతివం లో కొన్ని రోజులు అన్నట్టు ఉంటాయి. కొన్ని బాగుండొచ్చు, కొన్ని బాగోకపోవొచ్చు, కానీ అన్ని మన కథలే అన్నట్టు ఉంటాయి. ఒక రోజెల్లిపోయింది అని పిచ్చయ్య గారి జీవితం గురించి చెప్ప్పినా, ముద్దులల్లుడు అని ఆ ఊరు అంతటి మనోభావాల్ని మామూలు భాషలో పలికించినా ఆయనకే చెల్లింది. మూడు పేజీలలో అంత ఉద్వేగాన్ని రేకేతించగలం అని తెలిసేలా చేసారు. ప్రతి కథ కి ట్విస్ట్ లు, కాంఫ్లిక్టులు అక్కర్లేదు అని రుజువు చేసారు. కొన్ని కథలు అలరిస్తాయి, కొన్ని కథలు ఆలోచింప చేస్తాయి, మరి కొన్ని అసలు ఈ పుస్త్తకం ఎందుకు పట్టుకున్నాం రా అని మనల్ని మనం తిట్టుకునేలా చేస్తాయి. ఏదేమయిన అన్ని కథలని మనం పూర్తి చేసేలా చేస్తాయి. సిరి-శాంతి, నిండు కుండ బొమ్మ, అదుగో-అల్లడుగో, ఇవన్నీ ఈ సంతత కి చెందినవే. ఆ కథలకి తోడు బాట గారి బొమ్మలు ఆ కథలకి మరింత వన్నె లు తెచ్చాయి. రేఖానువాదం అని ఊరికే అనలేదు. నాలుగు పెన్సిల్ గీతలతో కథ మొత్తాన్ని గుర్తు చేస్తున్నారంటే అది కళ అనే అనాలి. వేలం సరుకు, ఏడాదికోసారి పులి, బిందురేఖ, ఏడుపెరగని వాడు, ఇలా ఎన్నో కథలని పొదిగి అమరావతి కథలు అని ప్రచురించారు. తెలుగు సాహిస్తాం శిధిలావస్థలో ఉన్న సమయం లో ఇలాంటి సాహిత్యం అరవై సంవత్సరాల పాతదైనా అపురూపంగా కనిపిస్తుంది. మరీ ముఖ్యంగా మూడు పేజీలలో గుండెల్లో నిలిచిపోయే కథలు చెప్పొచ్చు అని రుజువు చేస్తోంది.

కధలకి ఆది, నడుమ భాగం, అంతం ఉండాలి అంటారు. సత్యం గారికి ఆ రూల్స్ వర్తించవు. నదులకి ఆది అంతం ఉండవు కదా! ఇక్కడి నది, పక్క ఊరికి వెళ్తుంది. అక్కడ్నించి పట్నాలు తిరిగి సముద్రం లో కలుస్తుంది. ఎండకి వేడెక్కి ఆకాశాన్ని అంటుతుంది. బోరున వర్షంగా కురుస్తుంది. ఇందులో ఏది ఆది ? ఏది అంతం? ఈయన కధలు కూడా అంతే! నిరంతర జీవిత ప్రవాహం లోని మచ్చు తునకలు.

వారానికొక కధ రాయాలని పట్టుపట్టి, రెండు సంవత్సరాలు కూర్చుంటే ఈ పుస్తకం వెలువడింది. ఏడిపించి, నవ్వించి, కవ్వించి, క్రోధపరచే కధలు. 3 పేజీల మించి ఏ కదా ఉండదు. 3 పేజీలలో ఇంత మంచి కధలు రాయొచ్చన్న విషయం ఈ కధలు చదివాక అర్థమవుతుంది. అమరావతి లోని పాత్రలని ఆధారించుకుని రాసారు ఈ కధలు. పేదరికం, చావు, వైధవ్యం, వివాహాలు, పిల్లలు, తల్లి ప్రేమ వంటి తీవ్రమైన అంశాలే కాకుండా, విందు భోజనాలు, పునుగులు, ఊర్లో కొట్లాటలు, అమ్మలక్కల గొడవలు, ఆవులు గేదెలు వంటి ఆహ్లాద కరమైన అంశాలని కూడా కలగలిపి అనర్ఘళంగా రాసిన వంద కధల పుస్తకం. అన్ని కథల్లోనూ పాత్రలు వేరు, కథానికలు వేరు. ఒకటి రెండు తప్పిస్తే, అన్ని కధలూ ముత్యాలే ! ఆ ముత్యాలన్నిటిని హారం గా కూర్చే దారం, కృష్ణా నది. ప్రతి కధలో కృష్ణ నీడ, అస్తిత్వం, తత్త్వం స్పష్టంగా కనిపిస్తాయి.

Actually a well going book comprised of several small stories that happens in a town in Andhrapradesh #amaravati. Must read book as some great tales are incorporated in this book and some stories are casual, normal. I bought this book on the suggestion of one of the top Tollywood directors. After reading it, you will come to know many Indian procedures that are forgotten by today’s generation. Must read for everyone who can read Telugu.
Note: just start with no expectations, then you will enjoy the book.

One of the greatest books I ever read.
It made me laugh, think,retrospect, cry, pray and most of all took me all the way to amarvati town.
All of these stories take you away from reality and fill your soul with gratitute,Joy,devotion and greatest of all content. The innocence of many characters which is intelligently depicted by the writer is truly admirable.

I am sure this is one of those books which I will keep revisting for the rest of my life.

Amaravati kathalu is my first telugu book. I felt this is a great book to start my journey in the telugu literature reading.

I love the way the book was compiled, an amalgamation of both happy and sad stories. This amalgamation makes you understand and feel life doesn't only have good times but bad times too.

A must read for every telugu literature reader.

The plot points are Krishna river, Siva temple and people from various communities. Satyam sankaramanchi gaaru writing is simple yet brilliant. It takes us back in time and place to Amaravati town.

what a book, so much nostalgia with each story. Took me back to my beloved Guntur district, especially to Amaravathi to the Amareswara Swamy, Venkatadri Nayudu, Krishnamma Talli.
