Time flows relentlessly and so does the struggle. It does not take a break. If at all there is any change then it is in the form of high tide or overflowing. It is always on the side of worsening. Whenever there are more mouths to feed, a lot of people around this struggle reaches to peak. Whenever sharing land and food becomes inevitable, resistance is unavoidable. Confrontation is at its worst when someone tries to intrude our caste and our system and then tries to break through the impregnable walls of society. Those who are really able to speak, often blurt out their anger and antagonism through words. Those who are not able to speak out, reflect their love and hatred through actions, body language and so on. Once struggle starts, it takes a hideous form. Words appear to be deficient. Weapons take place of words then. Whenever there is a shortage of weapons, then often tusks and nails are used in place. Struggle envelopes everything.

About the author

Vyankatesh Digambar Madgulkar (Marathi: व्यंकटेश दिगंबर माडगूळकर) (1927–2001) was one of the most popular Marathi writers of his time. He became well-known mainly for his realistic writings about village life in a part of southern Maharashtra called Maandesh, set in a period of 15 to 20 years before and after India's Independence.

Madgulkar wrote 8 novellas, over 200 short stories, about 40 screenplays, and some folk plays (लोकनाट्य), travelogues, and essays on nature. He translated some English books into Marathi, especially books on wild life, as he was an avid hunter.

पंचतंत्रात आणि इसापनितीमध्ये प्राणी बोलतात आणि बोधकथा सांगतात. लहान मुलांसाठी मूल्यशिक्षण म्हणून ह्या दोन्ही अतिशय छान. पण मोठ्या माणसांचं काय? ६२ पानांच्या दीर्घकथेत व्यंकटेश माडगूळकर जंगलाचा कायदा सांगतात. आपल्या आजच्या ओव्हर प्रोटेक्टिव्ह आणि पॉलिटिकली करेक्ट जगात हा जंगलाचा कायदा इतका हिंस्त्र तरीही कमालीचा इंडिफरन्ट वाटतो.

आहे हे असं आहे, ते वास्तव स्वीकारून पुढे जाण्याची गरज आणि हतबलता दोन्ही इथे आहे. स्वतःपुरता अवकाश तयार करून ‘मी काय करू शकतो’ (सर्कल ऑफ कंट्रोल किंवा इन्फ्लुएन्स) ह्याच्याकडे बघण्याची एक दृष्टी हे पुस्तक नक्की देतं. कर्तव्यात कसूर केली नाही म्हणून हक्कांची entitlement जंगलात नाही. ही रूपककथा नाही, शेवटी तात्पर्य नाही. कुठेही नीतिमत्तेचे धडे नाहीत. वाचणाऱ्याने आपल्या वकुबानुसार आणि इच्छेनुसार कथेकडे बघण्याचं स्वातंत्र्य पुस्तक देतं. अर्थात मानव म्हणून आपल्याकडे नीतिमत्ता आणि मूल्यांचा विकास झाला तो ह्या जंगलाच्या कायद्याच्या कचाट्यातून बाहेर येऊन समाज म्हणून एकत्र राहण्यासाठीच्या नियमनासाठी झाला हे झालंच. तरीही इतर माणसांना, त्यांच्या निर्णयांना समजून घेताना आपण कुठून उत्क्रांत झालो ह्याची जाणीव असलेली चांगली, त्यासाठी हे पुस्तक नक्कीच मदत करतं.

पुस्तकाच्या अंती लक्षात राहते ती भाषा. जंगलाच्या कायद्यासारखीच सरळ, थेट आणि परिणामकारक. काही अनोळखी शद्ब असूनही भाषा प्रभावी आणि अर्थवाही आहे. “भाषेचं काय… अर्थ कळला म्हणजे झालं” असा भाषेबद्दल एक प्रकारचा अलिप्त अरसिकपणा असणाऱ्यांना हे पुस्तक जरूर वाचण्यास दिलं पाहिजे. स्वतः लेखकानेही प्रस्तावनेत भाषेला महत्व दिल्याचं ते अधोरेखित करतात. शब्दचित्र उभं करताना समर्पक शब्दांचा प्रभावी वापर कॅनव्हासवरच्या कुंचल्याइतका महत्वाचा मानला पाहिजे. हेच एक उदाहरण देतो,

“बोथरी शेपूट उभारून धावली. पातेयावर आवाज झाला आणि एका झुडपाआडून रानकुत्र्यानं झेप घेतली. ती झेप नेमकी बोथरीच्या अंगावर पडली. बोथरी पातेऱ्यात लोळताच कुत्र्यानं आपल्या पोलादी जबड्यात तिचा गळा घेतला आणि जबड्याचा चाप खटकन मिटला.”

ह्या छोट्याश्या कथेसाठी केलेला अभ्यास आणि वाचन बऱ्यापैकी आहे ते सुरुवातीला प्रस्तावनेतच स्पष्ट होते. लेखक म्हणतात,

“एकोणीसशे बावन्नपासून पुढे पंधरा वर्षे मी शिकारीच्या निमित्ताने कर्नाटकातील मासूर, यल्लापूर, गुंजावती, कोणनकेरी ही मोठमोठी जंगले आणि नंतर शिकार सोडल्यावर महाराष्ट्रातील ताडोबा, नवेगाव, नागझिरा, रेहेकुरी, मध्य-भारतातील कान्हा, आसाममधील काझिरंगा, भूतान सरहद्दीवरील मानस, दक्षिणेतील पेरियार, राजस्थानातील भरतपूर आणि रणथंबोर ही अभयारण्ये हिंडलो आहे. मासूर, ताडोबा, मानस व रणथंबोर या अरण्यांत भरपूर वानरे आहेत आणि मी त्यांचे निरीक्षण केले आहे. वानरे पाहण्यासाठी मी अबू पर्वतावर सात दिवस जाऊन राहिलो. सोनेरी वानरे पाहण्यासाठीच मी मानसला गेलो. ती इतरत्र कुठेही नाहीत. जंगलचा रंग आणि गंध, ध्वनी आणि स्पर्श यांचा अनुभव मी अनेक परीनी घेतला आहे.”

परिणामकारक ठरण्यासाठी पुस्तकाची पृष्ठसंख्या हा निकष असू शकत नाही. किंबहुना, ६२ पानात मानव-विरहित जंगलात खोलवर नेऊन, वानरांच्या आयुष्यातून वेधक प्रसंग घेऊन केलेल्या अप्रतिम कथेसाठी आपण व्यंकटेश माडगूळकरांची आभारच मानावे हे खरे.

काळाप्रमाणेच संघर्षही सतत वाहतच असतो. त्याला खंड असा नसतोच. असलीच; तर भरती असते, पूर असतो. जेव्हा-जेव्हा खाणारी तोंड भरमसाट वाढतात, गर्दी होते, तेव्हा-तेव्हा संघर्ष उचल खातो. जेव्हा अस्थिरता निर्माण होते, एखादी जात धोक्यात येते, बाहेरून परकं कोणी येतं आणि बंदिस्त टोळीत घुसू पाहतं, तेव्हा संघर्ष उतू जातो. ज्यांना बोलता येतं; ते हा राग, उद्दामपणा, ‘संघर्ष’ शब्दांतून दाखवतात. ज्यांना बोलता येत नाही, त्यांचे राग-लोभ, प्रेम हावभावांतून, स्पर्शातूनच सांगितले जातात. संघर्ष पेटला की, शस्त्रास्त्रं वापरली जातात. ज्यांना शस्त्रास्त्रं माहीतच नसतात, ते सुळे, नखं वापरतात. ‘संघर्ष’ सर्वत्र भरून राहिलेला असतो.

As the author states in the beginning of the introduction, he didn't think his works needed an introduction or a preface, and indeed his readers - or anyone who is familiar with Marathi language - in more than the colonial invader manner of contemptuous attitude used by most non-local residents of the state - are far too familiar with his work and that of his brother to require such a feature.

The introduction he writes is quite extensive, telling one all about primates found in wildlife in India - the varieties, locations, and the research done by various observers thereof, about the social lives of thise primates. He writes, too, about the book hed written before, about observing wildlife in a forest where he spent a few weeks alone in a state forest facility.

And in doing this, he generally gives the clue to what one must expect in reading this book. Its a novel based on social lives of primates, and he even shows the difference between the two ways of writing, that of a researcher documenting ones observations versus a novelist using an incident.

If one likes wildlife observation, or animals, or even trio's to the zoo, one is bound to like it - for the author's level of art is beyond doubt.

But if one is indifferent to any of it, or worse, can't imagine another trip to the zoo, one may rethink reading it. And one may not mind watching primates in a zoo, where they really play to the audience. But this is about reality, and the glimpse he proffers thereof in the introduction is grisly enough.

सुंदर

छोटंसं पण सुंदर पुस्तक. प्रस्तावनेत दिलेल्या माहितीमुळे, पुस्तकातल्या घटना relate करता येतात. पाहिलेली एकच गोष्ट प्रोफेशनल निरीक्षक आणि एक लेखक कशी लिहू शकतो ते प्रस्तावनेत दिलेल्या माहितीमुळे कळतं.

पुस्तक वानरांवर असल तरी ते माणसांसाठी प्रतीकात्मक आहे. सत्तांतरासाठी संघर्ष माणसात व वानरात काही फरक नाही. जंगलातील घटनांचा बारकाईने नोंद घेतली आहे.

Liked this story for the detailed observation, by the author, of a band of monkeys and the transfer of power from the old leader of this band to the new one. Each monkey of the band has been given its own personality and maintained throughout.
