Juba viis aastat on Enn Padrik teadnud, et kunagi tuleb tal välja selgitada oma tütre surma tegelikud asjaolud. Ning nüüd ei saa seda enam edasi lükata. Selleks peab ta sõitma läbi suure osa Eestit ja käima koguni Prantsusmaal, et kohtuda paljude väga mitmesuguste inimestega, kellest ühed üritavad senini toona toimunut oma mälust kustutada, teised aga oleksid teda otsekui oodanud, et lõpuks ometi kõik südamelt ära rääkida. 71 books368 followersRein Raud was born in 1961 as the son of Eno Raud and Aino Pervik, both authors of popular books for children as well as novels and poetry. He graduated from St.Petersburg University (Japanese Studies, 1985) and defended his doctorate in the University of Helsinki (Literary Theory, 1994). In addition to novels, stories, poetry collections and essays, he is the author of numeorous academic publications in the areas of cultural theory and especially classical Japanese literature and philosophy, as well as a number of translations, mainly from Japanese into Estonian.

Mirstošais meklē atbildes par mirušo - tā laikam dažos vārdos varētu raksturot šo romānu. Caur citu cilvēku naratīvu kopumu par notikumiem, kas noveda pie četru jauniešu nāves, mēs kopā ar Enni šķetinam viņa meitas Annijas likteņa pavedienu. Kā jau noprotams, tad šī nav vieglā vai pozitīvā lasāmviela. Autors pietiekami meistarīgi mūs soli pa solim ved cauri jauniešu sevis un Dieva meklējumiem līdz neizbēgamajam galam. Manai gaumei brīžiem bija par daudz filozofiska un reliģiska satura muldēšanas viena vai cita tēla izpildījumā, bet kopumā kvalitatīva lasāmviela. Nevienā mirklī gan es šo nesauktu par spriedzes romānu (atsauce uz grāmatas aizmugures vāciņu), pārāk jau nu mierīgi un līgani mēs nonācām līdz patiesībai.

Sākumā traucēja tāds kā lasītāju informējošais stils un tēlu un situācijas psiholoģizēšana, kas likās ne visai ticama, kas vēlāk izvērtās ļoti labi uzrakstītā intelektuālā literatūrā, patika gan skaidrais, skarbais valodas stils, gan autora domāšana (jūtama viņa izglītība un kultūras zināšanu bagāža), gan aprakstītās tēmas - PSRS sabrukums, Eiropa (Rietumeiropa vs Austrumeiropa), reliģija, sabiedrība, brīvība...lasiet Raudu, latviešiem viss tur būs atpazīstams un mūsu literatūrā tam ekvivalentu pagaidām neatrodu.

Kaip pačiai patinka, kai kūrinio siužetas yra išsiskiriantis iš kitų, nebanalus, kitoniškas - tai "Rekonstrukcija" tokia ir buvo. Skaitant šią knygą nuotaikos buvo niūrios, slegiančios bei slogios...Kiek daug reikėjo tėvui turėti stiprybės, kiek daug turėti šaltų nervų, kad nepalūžti dėl dukters mirties bei prie tiesos išaiškinimo... Tik pačiai šioje knygoje buvo per daug Dievo bei tikėjimo temų.
Kai pagalvoju, kad su estų kūryba dar nebuvo tekę susipažinti, tad šis kūrinys padarė gerą pradžią - norėsiu ne tik perskaityti kitas Rein Raud knygas, bet ir susipažinti su kitais Estijos autorių kūriniais.

Autors šajā darbā ir pamatīgi iedziļinājies dzīvē apjukušu cilvēku prāta un apziņas samudžinātos labirintos, kas vēl papildinājumā ar sev taisītu voodoo stila lellīšu dedzināšanu uguns maģiskā rituālā vēl vairāk pastiprināja traģisko notikumu.
Es nolasīju šādu autora atziņu: jo vairāk meklēsi ticības apliecinājumus sev apkārt, jo mazāk ticēsi pats sev un ātrāk pazaudēsi pats sevi.
Un jā, paldies igauņu autoram par atzinīgajiem vārdiem Rīgas operas izrāžu augstajam līmenim (110.lpp.) :)

Enn Padrick, the narrator of The Reconstruction begins writing in a journal in order to catalog his private investigation into his young, adult daughter’s bizarre death: “I didn’t know it when I began, but I do now: I don’t want to blame anyone or anything; or if I do, then only myself. But I needed clarity. I don’t want to find fault; I want to find out—if I only can.” Enn’s daughter, Anni, had been living in a quasi-religious commune with three other friends, all of whom died in a fire on their isolated, Estonian farmstead. All four residents were found lying side by side in a second floor bedroom and each one of them had a small packed suitcase; a fifth suitcase was found in another room on the first floor, indicating that an additional resident had escaped this tragedy. Enn has been diagnosed with a fatal form of cancer and decides that he wants to spend his last several months trying to unpack the mystery of his daughter’s strange death.
The Reconstruction is divided into two parts, the first of which, entitled “Fish Tracks in Water” is taken up with Enn’s description of his early days at Tarfu State University where he studied Ecology and met his wife, Maire. I found the descriptions of Enn’s life in Estonia during the Russian occupation particularly fascinating. Rein Raud captures the general mood of what I would call a resentful acceptance of Soviet occupation through Enn’s memories of his earlier life: “I was a Pioneer and a member of the Komsomol (the Leninist Young Communits League) and hated the Soviet regime just like everyone else—not especially believing that it would even end, but also not of the opinion that it could be served with integrity.” Soviet rule lingers in the background of Enn’s life and has a great effect on his relationships, especially his marriage and his interactions with his in-laws.
Enn’s father-in-law had risen to an important rank in the Soviet hierarchy through the agricultural sector and enjoyed all of the privileges and perks to which he was entitled by the system. They lived in a nice apartment in a coveted area and Enn and Maire live with them for the first part of their married life and when their daughter is young. Enn has no ambitions to become a politician or work for the Soviet system like his father-in-law, so there seems to be some resentment on Maire’s part that her husband can’t provide luxuries for their family. When Anni, their only child, is a little older they do manage to get their own apartment through Maire’s father’s connections. Even though they are living on their own, in a different city, Enn’s obligation to his in-laws is still evident: “Life was hard during those final years of the Soviet Union, of course—shelves were empty, and if we hadn’t had Maire’s parents’ access to the privileged grocery stores, our diet would definitely have been much more meager than it was; but even that wasn’t so important.” The last part of this clause is particularly striking because, although he is still dependent on his in-laws and the old Soviet system, Enn is beginning to experience personal freedom as he lives apart from his in-laws and political freedom as the Soviet hold over Estonia is coming to its end.
As Anni gets older and the remnants of Soviet occupation fall away, opportunities are opened up to her and other Estonian youth that would have been unheard of a decade earlier. Anni graduates high school with honors and is number one on the university acceptance list for French studies. Anni moves to Paris and studies sociology and politics in that city for a few years. Part of Enn’s journey takes him to Paris where he discovers more about the nature of her studies and the types of people she interacted with while in Paris. Enn and Maire are proud of their daughter, but while reflecting back on those years Enn realizes that even at that point in her life he did not know his daughter very well at all: “What did I really know about my daughter at that point—about her as a person? I can honestly say: almost nothing.” Enn’s realization that his adult daughter was a stranger to him is one of the saddest and most poignant revelations in the entire book; it is only well after her tragic death that he begins to understand anything about her experiences and her life.
The theme of religion and how we each deal with our own mortality pervades Rein’s narrative. Enn is facing the end of his life due to a chronic illness as he investigates his daughter’s death. He doesn’t adhere to any particular religious beliefs but he feels that being a good person, the best that he is capable of, is important for him during his final days. Gaining a deeper understanding of his daughter feels like, for him, the good and right thing to do. The second part of the book, entitled “Birchback” is mostly taken up with Enn’s interviews of Anni’s friends as he tries to piece together her final year of life on the religious commune. Birchback was originally the home of an artist named Joel and his wife Veronika. They decide to open up their estate, which is a former farm and homestead, as a type of retreat where people can come and do workshops and practice self-reflection and self-improvement. There is no specific brand of religion that any of the residents at Birchback practice, but there are many discussions about the benefits and dangers of religious beliefs, especially when devotees take their spiritual practices to an extreme.
It is not unusual for young adults who are trying to figure out their place in this world to have some type of an existential or religious crisis. The scattered and confused characters at Birchback who do strange things in the name of religion, like shaving their heads and taking a vow of silence, become a symbol in the book for the crisis of faith and mortality that happens for Estonian youth after the Soviet occupation. Estonians were forbidden for so long to practice any type of Christianity that when they are faced with a freedom of religion, many young people like Anni and her friends experiment with different and unusual types of spirituality. After Enn comes to a better understanding of the strange and tragic path his daughter’s life had taken, he reflects on the role that religion can play in the life of a person who is having a vulnerable moment:
As far as I understand it, experts on religious psychopathy often say that the tendency to turn to religion is simply a human trait that some have and others don’t. Something like musicality or mathematics skills. That’s complete bullshit. No one is protected from it. Someone simply appears in your life at the exact moment you’ve hit a dead end, presses the right buttons (comforting some, questioning some, or simply being near others,) and then even the most rational mind, the most cheerful spirit is capable of withdrawing from his or her former principles.
One final theme that should be mentioned which pervades The Reconstruction as well as Raud’s previous book The Brother is that of familial relationships. Both of Raud’s novels are very different in plot and writing style, however, each story thoroughly explores the different and pivotal roles that family members play in our lives. Raud delves into relationships between siblings, spouses, in-laws, children and parents with careful attention to detail and imagery. Through Enn’s investigation into his daughter’s life, we are reminded that relationships are never easy and we can never become complacent with or take for granted a person that is truly important to us.

Man bija jāpārguļ ar sajūtām un pārdomām, lai varētu ko pateikt par šo darbu.
Šoreiz tā nu ir sanācis, ka atsauksme nāca lēnu un smagi - sākums maldinoši bezrūpīgs, bet tēma smaga - ticība un "lēciens tumsā", kolektīva pašnāvība. Kā vārdā?
“Rekonstrukcija” ir salipināta no cilvēku atmiņu stāstījumiem, kur vienojošajam elementam vajadzētu būt Annijai, bet to satur kopā Annijas tēvs, kas uzmeklēja cilvēkus, lai runātu par Anniju pēc viņas nāves. Es nesajutu Anniju. Man emocionāli pietrūka viņas klātesamības, lai justu līdzi tam, kas notika. Es jutu līdzi tēvam, kam droši vien bija sāpīgi dzirdēt lietas, ko viņš nav zinājis par savu meitu.

Pasirašydamas Rein Raud sakė, kad man šita knyga nepatiks, nes ji visai kitokia nei Brolis. Buvo ir teisus, ir neteisus - knyga tikrai kitokia, tačiau man labai patiko. Toks savotiškas detektyvas, besivystantis ramiu (estišku?) tempu.

romāns kā atpakaļejošā plānošana. seku dekonstrukcija, lai rekonstruētu cēloņus. diezgan sāpīga izrēķināšanās ar savu pieļauto pagātni. un taipat laikā - skats no malas uz visiem tiem, kuri cenšas izrēķināties paši ar sevi.

Vispār lasāmais labs, valoda raita, stāstījums aizraujošs, beeet nu garie, pārgudrie teksta blāķi par ticību, reliğiju un pašizziņu mani neuzrunāja ne tik cik melns aiz naga. Tādas lietad vairāk uzrunā agrā jaunībā, tomēr tad, man ir aizdomas, pārējais stāsts būtu vienaldzīgāks.

Knyga labai maloniai nustebino ir labai patiko. Nors knygos pagrindinė tema sunki, bet šalia visų filosofinių įžvalgų, netrūko ir santūrios ironijos. Tikrai skaitysiu ir kitas autoriaus knygas, nes "Rekonstrukcija" visiškai įtraukė :)

Kartais su gyvenimu tenka tiesiog susitaikyti - priimti jį tokį, koks jis yra, kad ir kaip tai būtų skaudu. Man ši knyga apie tai. Apie sugebėjimą žengti tą žingsnį, kuris nežinai, kur nuves.

Peale raske haiguse diagnoosi saamist otsustab loo peategelane Enn pühenduda oma tütre, Anni, surma uurimisele. Anni võttis 5 aastat tagasi eraklikus kommuunis koos kolme kaaslasega endalt elu ning isasüda ei suuda surmaga silmitsi seistes selle mõttega leppida ning hakkab asja omal käel uurima, et mis Kaskedetaguse talus tegelikult juhtus.
Raamatu esimeses pooles tutvustab Enn oma eksnaist, Anni ema, ja tolle perekonda, et lugeja saaks aimu Anni lapsepõlvest. Seejärel hakkab isa otsima neid inimesi, kes nooreks naiseks sirgunud Annit tundnud olid, sest tuleb välja, et vanemad ise tegelikult tihti peale oma lapsi eriti hästi ei tunnegi. Ja viimaks leidub ka keegi, kes Anniga saatusliku lõpu eel väga tihedalt seotud oli ning omamoodi usklikest koosnenud kommuunielu Ennule kirjeldada oskab. Loo puänt oli minu jaoks küll ootamtu, aga just seda ma raamatute juures ju armastangi. Kuulasin seda audioramatut ja ekstrapunktid lähevad kindlasti ka Tambet Tuisule, kes selle köitva loo on väga mõnusalt linti lugenud!

... ei ole oluline, kas see, mida me usume, on tingimata tõsi... Oluline on see, milliseks see meid teeb. Ma ei suuda hukka mõista ei tahtmist enda vastu jäägitult ausaks jääda ega kompromissitut soovi minna lõpuni. Aga kohe, kui nende taga tõstavad pead halastanatus ja põlgus - ning kui mängus on mõni jumal, noor või vana, ja ükskõik kui ilusat ligimesearmastust jutlustav, aga selline, kes meid jäägitult endale nõuab, siis juhtub see tingimata -, on minu jaoks piir ületatud. Ainuke usk ja lootus, mida minul on vaja selleks lühikeseks ajaks, mis mul järel, seisneb võimes muutuda kas või pisut paremaks inimeseks kui ma praegu olen.

Rein Raud's The Reconstruction is a two-fold examination of the narrator's life & marriage and then the life of his daughter who had died by suicide. The narrator's early life had been under the Soviet Union's post-World War II occupation of Estonia. Elamus. Pealtnäha tundub, et tegemist on sellise klassikalise krimisugemetega looga. Vähki surev isa püüab teha rahu viis aastat tagasi kummalistel asjaoludel surnud tütre Anni lahkumisega. Et mis ja miks siis ikkagi juhtus. Saame teada, mis juhtus, miks jääb igaühe enda lahti mõtestada. Mõtetes läheb isa tagasi enda lapsepõlve, ülikooliaega, Anni emaga abiellumise ja lahutuseni. Kõik tundus olevat okei, aga mingil hetkel Anni muutus, jättis pooleli edukad õpingud Prantsusmaal, liikus kummaliste sektantide seltskonnas kuni traagilise lõpuni välja. Võib vaid arvata, et katalüsaatoriks oli rumal samm asetada end uurimistöö nimel teatud seltskonna kingadesse, mis midagi temas pöördumatult paigast ära loksutas.
Raamatut on nimetatud usuvastaseks teoseks - mina seda nii ei näe. Praktiseeriva kristlasena mind ei häirinud äärmuslikud näited erinevatest religioonidest - see kõik on ju olemas. Olin isegi aastaid kirikust eemal, sest samastasin neid inimesi Jumalaga. Lihtsalt igasugune organiseeritud religioon (või mistahes organisatsioon, partei, kogukond), konfessioonist sõltumata, meelitab ligi võimuhulle manipulaatoreid, nartsissiste ja psühhopaate, aga head on ikka kordades rohkem. Ehk paraku ei saa Jumalat samastada tema järgijatega. Laias laastus nõustun autoriga (lause lõpuga siis, tõde on ikkagi mulle oluline), et "Mu meelest ei ole oluline, kas see, mida me usume, on tingimata tõsi … Oluline on see, milliseks see meid teeb."
Teine raamatut läbiv teema oli mu jaoks peresuhted, et miks need vahel kiiva kisuvad või on sellised nagu on. Minu vanemate põlvkonnal ja põlvkondadel enne seda ei olnud kombeks väga isiklikke suhteid lahata, rohkem jäeti rääkimata kui räägiti - et ehk laheneb ja läheb kuidagi. Vahel lahenes ja läks, aga sageli mitte. Kus leida seda tasakaalu ameerikaliku kõige väljaladumise ja lõputu heietamise ning eestlasliku reserveerituse vahel - kes teab. Mul oli tunne, et Anni peres elasid kõik kuidagi oma elu - oli küll pere, aga puudus pereelu - ja ega see tema vanemate Ennu ja Maire peredes teisiti olnud.

Audio, loeb Tambet Tuisk (Libby'is olemas Keskraamatukogu kaudu - sinna üldse mitmeid eestikeelseid audioraamatuid ka tekkinud). Võin vist julgelt soovitada just kuulatavat versiooni.
Lugu on siis selline, et üks isa otsib vastuseid oma tütre surmaloos. Aga pigem nagu filosoofilisi kui kriminaalseid. Kui tahta kriminulli, siis jääb raamat ikka igavaks vast, eriti esimeses pooles.
Ma olen nüüd mõned varasemad Rein Raua raamatud lugenud (tervitused autorile, kui seda loba siin jälgib :D!) ja teadsin, mida oodata. Ja see mõjus ainult hästi. Mulle täitsa meeldib see stiil ja tegelaste loomine. Kas see viib kuhugi? Noh, võib-olla isegi rohkem kui ma julgesin oodata. Oli nagu lõpp ka.
Aga võib-olla mul oli lihtsalt tuju kuulata ära mitmete inimeste lood.

Neskubėjau skaityti šios knygos, gal istorija būtų stipriau paveikusi, jeigu ją būčiau skaičiusi be pertraukų kitoms knygoms.
Rašymas man patiko, veikėjai subtilūs ir charakteringi. Istorija keista, ypač pabaiga. Iš esmė pabaigą žinoma jau nuo pirmų puslapių, bet per visą knygą išlieka mįslė, kaip gi iki to buvo nueita. Nueita buvo tikrai netradiciniu keliu. Ar mane tai įtikino? Kalbant apie pagrindinio veikėjo dukrą - taip, kas dėl kitų - ne. Žmonės padaro keistų dalykų, ypač veikiami grupės, bet vis tiek dėl kitų veikėjų, kurių likimas buvo kaip dukters, man sunku patikėt, kad jie galėjo taip pasielgti.
Knygą tikrai rekomenduoju kitiems, manau, bus labai įdomi diskusija ją aptarinėjant su knygų klubu.

Ladusa teksti ja loomulike dialoogidega 2-osaline põnevusromaan, mis on mõnusalt pikitud intellektuaalsete diskursustega. Esimene osa kirjeldab arvustamata perekondlikku tausta, inimesi, nende omavahelisi suhteid ja läbielamisi. See tekitab kaastunde isa vastu, kes avastab, et tegelikult pole ta oma tütart kunagi õieti tundnud, ning paneb pöialt hoidma tema tõeotsingutele. Jutustuse teine osa rekonstrueeribki ülimalt kaasahaaravalt loo, mis vastab isa küsimistele. Põnev, julm, ootamatu.

Rein Raud on virolainen kirjailija ja Japaniin erikoistunut kulttuurin ja kirjallisuuden tutkija. Rekonstruktio on Raudin ensimmäinen (mutta toivottavasti ei viimeinen) suomennettu teos. Se on koskettava tarina, jossa yhden henkilön kertomat pienet tarinat kietoutuvat Viron lähihistoriaan.
Enn Padrik on kuolemansairas mies, joka diagnoosin saatuaan alkaa selvittää tyttärensä Annin viisi vuotta aiemmin tapahtunutta kuolemaa. Anni kuoli uskonnollisessa joukkoitsemurhassa taitelilijatalossa Viljandimaalla. Neljä nuorta aikuista löydettiin palavasta talosta kuolleina. Päidensä alla heillä oli pienet matkalaukut ja käsissä kirje, jossa sanottiin heidän olevan valmiita astumaan jumalansa eteen. Isä yrittää ymmärtää, mitä tapahtui, mikä ajoi tyttären kuolemaan.
"Tämä tarina ei kerro minusta", sanoo Enn Padrik, mutta lopulta kirja kertoo juuri hänestä. Tavallisesta miehestä, joka piti työstään, eteni normaalia vauhtia, mutta oli vailla mainittavaa kunnianhimoa. Avioliitto Mairen kanssa, jonka vanhemmat olivat sen verran hyvässä asemassa, että heidän kauttaan Enn ja Maire saivat pieniä etuja Neuvosto-Virossa. Anni oli perheen ainokainen, ihannelapsi. Aikuistuessaan hän lähtee opiskelemaan Pariisiin. Siellä kuitenkin tapahtuu jotain. Anni keskeyttää opintonsa ja palaa Viroon, jossa hän lopulta ajautuu taiteilijataloon, jossa hän ajautuu kohtalokkaaseen tekoonsa.
Enn etsii käsiinsä ihmisiä, jotka olivat tunteneet Annin ja kyselee heiltä tämän asioista. Keskustelujen yhteydessä alkaa auki keriytyä tarina, jonka edetessä Enn tajuaa, kuinka kauas tyttärestään hän olikaan ajautunut. Tapahtumat etenevät hiukan salapoliisiromaanin tapaan, mutta kyseessä ei ole dekkari. Kyseessä on matka, jolla Enn Padrik yrittää rekonstruoida Annin kuolemaan johtaneet tapahtumat. Samalla hän käy läpi omaa elämäänsä tietäessään kuolevansa pian. Enn Padraikin tarinan edetessä avautuu näköala kolmen sukupolven arkielämään Virossa.

Lopulta ihminen voi mennä äärimmäisyyksiin, missä tahansa asiassa oli kyse aatteesta, uskonnosta tai ilmastonmuutoksesta. Rekonstruktio sisältää paljon filosofisia ja uskonnollisia pohdintoja käymättä raskaaksi ja hylkäämättä juonta. Dialogi on sujuvaa ja aidon tuntuista. Se voitti vuonna 2012 Viron Kulttuurirahaston vuosipalkinnon, joka vastaa merkittävyydeltään Finlandia-palkintoa.

I knew very little about Estonia when I started reading The Reconstruction, but visited the country part-way through and started to get more into it after learning more about Estonian history. However, I then lost my way with this novel a bit. Being more familiar with Estonia might have helped, I expect. Whilst I felt invested in the stories of the narrator, his daughter, and a couple of other characters, there were too many others whose journeys and philosophies I struggled to follow or care about. Taking breaks from reading then made it harder to pick up the threads. Still, I was glad that I persisted to the end. The impossiblity of this father getting a clear, single answer to explain his daughter's life and death - or of anyone getting those answers about anyone else - came across powerfully. The father's experience was less intellectualised than other characters' so easier for me to connect with. I particularly liked two passages, one in which he describes the feeling of leaving a foreign city:
And the other reflecting on longing:
I am leaving, but this city will remain, with its people and its sounds and its rhythms, and the fact that it will be left without me once again makes no real difference to it. The faces of passersby, which just a couple of days earlier belonged to people with whom you shared that large space, now seem to retreat behind a border. That space is still theirs, but it's like you no longer exist in it anymore.
And the other reflecting on longing:
Longing is incapable of accepting the empty space, which the world's onward grind should refill as time passes. Rather, it screams out against any kind of touch - wordless, thoughtless, pointless, simply in unadulterated pain. Longing lies near in graveyards, but it is covered by a rug of silence. The scream isn't gone, but it has flowed out from the heart - beneath the green pines, between the sandy paths.

Huvitav, et viimasel ajal on see juba teine raamat, mis tütre surma uurivast isast räägib (Fitzeki "Teraapia" samuti). Aga see on hoopis teises stiilis, mitte mingi põnevik. Pigem oma elu lõppu ette teadva (kasvaja viimane staadium) inimese katse enne surma veel oluline teada saada. Sest kaotada pole enam midagi. Isegi, kui talle midagi rääkida ei taheta, leidub alati neid, kes kasvõi eneseteraapia vormis on nõus rääkima hingelt ära midagi, mis neid kaua on vaevanud.
Raamat on lugu tütrest, kes läks algul Eestis, siis Prantsusmaale õppima ja sattus seal olukordadesse, mis tema saatust täielikult muutsid. Seda muutsid aga ka inimesed, kellega ta kokku sattus. Raud on osanud neid karaktereid väga hästi välja joonistada. Parim näide on minu meelest tegelane nimega Android, oma ettekujutustes samastasin teda ühe Laseringi poe pikajuukselise ja musta riietatud sünge müüjaga. Selle raamatu filosoofia võibki peituda selles, et meil võivad olla suured unistused ja kõrged põhimõtted, aga elu nullib need ära. Elu saab justkui valesti elatud ja mingit kustukummiga paranduste tegemise võimalust enam ei ole ega tule.

Quite a unique book, I would say. On the surface, You could call it a detective. However, there is a bit more to it. The underlying topic is the topic of truth and belief. In that sense, this book reminded me of The Name of The Rose by Umberto Eco. Both books delve into the question of how important it is to know the truth and how the truth is relevant to every individual. Are ones personal belief more or less important than proven facts. Both books explore this topic by using religion as an example. Interestingly, neither book answers the question and leaves it to the reader to decide.
Going back to Rein Raud - this book is dark and melancholic, yet captivating. For sure an interesting read. The main character is quite an ordinary man, or maybe below ordinary. He is a low achiever, mostly just interested in art and comfort. However, there is certain serenity about him, that makes him a compelling character to like.

I read The Dalkey Archive edition translated by Adam Cullen, but since it isn't listed here, I chose this edition to add to my list.
Good mystery, a bit slower pace than most of the mysteries I read, but I enjoyed it. It's told in the stories a father seeks about his daughter's death as he comes to terms with his own impending death (not a spoiler). Interesting characters. I've been reading up on Estonia lately and thought I would try some fiction.

Estų autoriaus psichologinė knyga, pasakojanti ką reiškia sirgti onkologine liga, žinoti, kad miršti ir būti tuo periodu vienišu. Kita nagrinėjama problema yra vaikų, gyvenančių nedarnioje šeimoje, besiskiriančioje ar jau išsiskyrusioje šeimoje vienišumas, negalėjimas spręsti savo problemų. Tada ir atsiranda "tikėjimų", tokių pat nesuprastų draugų, atsiskyrėlių komunų paieškos ir net savižudybė.

Lieliska grāmata. Lai arī pašā grāmatas sākumā ir skaidrs, kas būs beigās, tomēr interese neatslābst ne mirkli. Notikuma saturs un virzība liek vēlēties vairāk izjust galvenā varoņa emocijas un attieksmi pret notiekošo. Bet to autors ir atstājis pašam lasītājam. Gaidu nākamo tulkoto Reino Rauda darbu.

Rein Raua kirjastiil on tavapäraselt sümpaatne ja intelligentne, kuid sisulist haaravust ja tihedust napib. Lugesin täpselt poole peale, leidmata enda jaoks ühtki head põhjust edasi minna. Hõreda-, aeglase- ja laialivalguvavõitu.
