Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
I'm so glad that one of Claude LeFrancq's "Collection B.Detectives." was translated! It's such an interesting series of adaptations that includes many of Europe's famous sleuths like Sherlock Holmes, Arsene Lupin, Monsieur Wens, Routabille, Edmund Bell, Edgar Wallace, Abbe Brown, Nero Wolfe and even does Fantomas. I have four of them in French and recommend all to Francophones based on the examinations I perform on every album when they arrive.
The art of this one isn't top-notch but it suits the story well- which is a tense and engaging read!
A visually entertaining interpretation of Conan Doyle's short story with a more traditional view of Holmes and Watson.
It is one of Conan Doyole's more surreal stories and is magnificently interpreted by G Clair as Holmes battles against his arch-enemy, thought long dead, Moriarty.
It all begins as a man is found collapsed outside Holmes' residence and this leads him into a gambling den and an encounter with an invisible man. All very exciting stuff and well worth a read.
I gave this book 4/5 mostly due to the illustration. I loved it! Excellent work from G. Clair - simple lines but the forms are come out very elegantly, great balance between detail and abstraction, nice camera angles - very nice work.
