Caitlin Ross #4

The Parting Glass

Rate this book
In a town where every third person claims psychic powers, Caitlin Ross is a rarity: a genuine Witch. Though she hides her abilities from all but a few, Caitlin’s magic goes hand in hand with a compassionate heart, and she can seldom resist a plea for help. When a friend requests her aid banishing a Shadow Creature raised in an ill-advised spell, Caitlin promises to do whatever she can. And she means to keep her promise no matter the personal cost, even after her friend runs off, leaving Caitlin holding the bag.

Born in Scotland, Timber MacDuff grew up in America, where he apprenticed with a Native healer. Now ready to strike out on his own, he must complete a final test: locate a shaman on a dark path and remedy his horrific mistake. Timber’s quest leads him straight to Caitlin’s front door, and after a disastrous first meeting, they realize their goals are the same. Their best chance of success lies in working together.

With the Shadow Creature endangering innocents, neither Caitlin nor Timber has any intention of addressing their growing attraction. But Fate joined them for a reason. For a soul’s salvation, two stubborn spirits must surrender to love, changing their futures for eternity.

She remembers being in the woods one time with two others. Something about this frightened her, so she ran away. When she tripped over a rotten log, a large spider ran across it. She screamed, and the others laughed. Eventually, she made it back to the house.

She believes this happened at the lake house that was sold when she was three, but some have assured her that the house did not look like that and the event never took place.

***This review was done in conjunction with, and originally appeared on Author Alliance.***

Reviews can be difficult to write. There are books that are outstanding from a technical aspect, but leave me wanting for the story. There are stories that move me and keep me engaged from the first to the last, but are rife with editing errors or pacing problems or the like.

The Parting Glass was the best of all worlds and the worst of none. It's the story of Caitlin Ross, a witch, and Timber McDuff, a shaman. John Stonefeather, a local Native American man, is in trouble, and goes to Caitlin for help. Not long after this, Timber comes to town, searching out his own quest, sent by his teacher to do something...what...he doesn't exactly know.

I'm not going to tell you much more about the story itself. No, I'm going to talk about other things. You see, I went into this book cold. I'd read the summary, of course, but that's it. I knew it was part of a series. In fact, I knew it was the fourth book in the series.

I want happily ever after. I know that life isn't neat and tidy and doesn't always have those wonderful tidy little endings, but still, I want them. And I knew that this was the fourth book. It's not much of a stretch once you reach the 20% mark, to want Caitlin and Timber to get together and have that happy ending. But it's the fourth book. So I wasn't sure.

I was on pins and needles throughout the whole book (in a good way). The language, both that used to describe the magic and that of both Timber and Caitlin, was stunning. I could "see" Boulder through the words on the page. The individual characters, from John to Marilyn, to Gina, to Sage, to Zee, were dynamic and varied, each with their own talents and personalities. I want more of these characters.

Every time Caitlin and Timber had an up or a down, I held my breath. The danger made me nervous. The resolution felt right and true.

This is a book that will stick with you and characters you'll want to know better. **Edited to add after several hours: I'm still thinking about Caitlin and Timber. I'm worried about them. I'm hopeful for them. I want them out of my head, but they won't leave. This is the mark of a good book for me.

One thing that I didn't mention that I meant to...the author does a fantastic job of making her characters strong but not perfect. They do stupid things. They have insecurities. They are REAL people.

***Back to the unedited section: I will definitely be reading more of this series. Well written, well thought out, and well executed. Beautiful in every way. (Oh, and the fact that this is the fourth book? It's actually a prequel.)

I was so pleasantly taken away by this book. Katherine has a way of writing fabulously strong characters that never leave you, probably in the way they never left her when they first came to her. Superb writing and a great knack for story-telling, Katherine has put her soul in this book. Love the heritage of the characters, the ease with which they live their callings and use their powers, and of course the Celtic base. It left me moved, teary-eyed, laughing, swooning, angry, and on the edge of my seat. Can't wait to delve into the second book in the Caitlin Ross series! And here I go...

What do you do when you know your world is going to change irrevocably, and you have no idea what it may change into? Hmmm, sounds like any meaningful relationship I have ever had. What if the choice not to change means that your dreams may shatter and people might die? These are the questions faced by the two main characters in The Parting glass. If that isn't enough for readers of the Caitlin Ross series, this book is the revelation of how Caitlin and Timber met.
I'm a guy. I'm not supposed to go in for all that gooey relationship stuff. "Oooo, What a romantic couple. I wonder how they met?" That kind of stuff. Truth is, I'm nearly in love with both of Author Katherine Lampe's main characters, Caitlin Ross and Timber McDuff, so I was just as excited to hear the back story of their meeting and beginning of the most intriguing magical team EVER, as any smitten school girl.
What could be better than watching Caitlin's first reaction to seeing her Scots he-man? I'll tell you. Watching two very clever and powerful individuals navigate their way through the cold trail of a wounded man, combating amorphous and threatening spirits and ultimately performing one of the best healing rituals I have ever read. Fear, romance, danger, magic, sex (oh yeah, but you know, tasteful sex), heartbreak, and the thoughtful methods we have come to expect from Caitlin and Timber. This is a real keeper! Be sure you read the author's note and the deeply moving The Morning After Blues at the end of the book. It's well worth it!

It’s not an adventure type of fantasy book but a well-written modern fairytale about an almost ordinary girl - apart from the fact that she is a witch. The plot revolves mainly around her romance with a shaman of Scottish origin. It seemed to me that the author is more concerned with showing the sexual tension and love growing between Caitlin and Timber than with the investigation carried on by them. That’s why it is a fantasy book but rather for people interested in romances and incomparably better written 50 shades-kind of fiction (I’m not and maybe that’s why I had a feeling that there was too much talking about love, even sex scenes seemed to be more central to the plot than the whole investigation) – if you seek action, adventure, blood, violence etc. you would be rather disappointed. What I liked most about the book was the fact that the author incorporated into her tale the elements of Celtic folklore such as songs, legends or Gaelic language. It added some mysteriousness as well as authenticity to the story. I also liked the way the author interpreted the concept of modern witch – as a resolute, wise, commonsensical, independent woman whose magic is aimed at protection and defense, being rather constructive than destructive. To sum up, this is a beautifully-written romance with the elements of magic.

This is the first book I've read in this series and I really enjoyed it. Things I particularly enjoyed about it are the strong female characters, the main character's metaphysical shop, the Celtic theme, the writing style, and the mystery in the book. There is one point in the book where I was impatient for the story to get back to the mystery that suspense had been built up around but was then dropped for what felt like too long. But the pacing in the rest of the book was perfect. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal stories, Celtic themes, sexy big Scotsmen, magic, and steamy romance. This book has it all.

Okay. Maybe it's tacky for me to review a book that I wrote. But this has become my personal favourite in the Caitlin Ross series, and I thought I'd post a note to let you know how well it turned out, in my opinion.

This book was fun to write, and it's fun to read. The characters are great, the dialog is snappy, the settings well-realized, and the plot quick-paced. There's mystery and magic, conflict and romance. It's well-written, too.

Enough of blowing my own horn. Check it out and see for yourself.

LOVE this series, LOVE this book! It really gives good background on how the relationship began--a bit rocky, you might say? But what a match. Together, they are definitely stronger than each added to the other. Two strong people, creating something new--which is always a bit scary! Thank you, Katherine! And thank you for your description of how these stories come to be. I'll do my best to be patient as I await the next installment. Hey Caitlin? We're all waiting for you with love.
