Oh my goodness, I did it, I've reached the end of The Old Testament before the end of 2017 (just). Malachi is the very last book in The Old Testament, and apparently Malachi means 'messenger'. My favourite part of this book is near the end where it mentions The Day of the Lord, as it's so visually descriptive.

4:1-3 - "Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire," says the Lord Almighty. "Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. Then you will trample down the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do these things," says the Lord Almighty.

In January 2015 I set myself the challenge to read the complete Bible within a year. I discovered that was an unrealistic challenge, and decided to pick up my Bible as and when I felt ready to read more of it. Here is a link to all the reviews in my Bible challenge so far:

Sidenote: The reason for such vague and short and "eh" words on each of these books, is because I wasn't challenging the study of the Bible when I read these. I was challenging myself to read the whole Bible in a year because I knew it would be discipline to keep at it daily. I do, however, plan to pick up a book and study what it is saying. Those will be longer reads and more notes.

So here is my review from my "Read the Bible in a Year" challenge. Usually just snippets of thoughts and random things I liked about the book itself. Nothing in-depth.

So here is my review of Malachi.

Those who believe and follow will succeed. <3

Malachi is a short book of four chapters, but it packs a punch. Malachi wrote to the Jews in Jerusalem a hundred years after they returned from exile in Babylon.

The four chapters have six discourses between God and the people and leaders. God reproves them for not giving Him His tithes and for divorcing their wives. He then foretells the coming of another Elijah who will prepare the way for the Lord, who will come suddenly to His temple. Mal. 3:1

The coming of the Lord to the temple will not be all peaches and cream.

Malachi 3:2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.

This refining process will bear good fruit:

Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.

God prophecies of a faithful remnant to Him, and of the coming of the Day of the Lord. That day will be good for the faithful and a terrible day of burning for the wicked.

Malachi's prophecy closes repeating that Elijah will surely come before the day of the Lord.

4 chapters | book 39 of 39 in the Old Testament

🏁 AAAAAAAND that’s a wrap! I finished reading the whole Old Testament from beginning to end! I will do a separate post as a reflection but here are my thoughts on the book of Malachi.

The writing style in this book was a fresh take on “here is a word from the Lord” - uniquely it was turned into a conversation between God and His people. God makes a claim and his people ask how the claim is true and then God explains.
The people are kind of SNARKY toward the Lord so I felt like I was watching my sibling get in trouble and it was honestly kind of entertaining.🤭
For example -
God: “I have always loved you.”
His people: “Really? How have you loved us?”
🫣 (me: OOP!)
The Lord goes on to explain how He chose them over other nations.
‭‭Malachi‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/mal.1.2-3...

————

🔀 The theme of calling good things evil and evil things good, shows up again. I never realized what a huge theme this is throughout the Old Testament and how much God hates it.

“You have wearied the Lord with your words. “How have we wearied him?” you ask. You have wearied him by saying that all who do evil are good in the Lord’s sight, and he is pleased with them. You have wearied him by asking, “Where is the God of justice?””
‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2‬:‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/mal.2.17.NLT

————

🗣️ This whole conversation seems like the same thing someone would say today.

““You have said, ‘What’s the use of serving God? What have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the Lord of Heaven’s Armies that we are sorry for our sins? From now on we will call the arrogant blessed. For those who do evil get rich, and those who dare God to punish them suffer no harm.’””
‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭NLT‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/116/mal.3.14-...

Why should we serve God? The rich keep getting richer and evil people keep getting away with it all.
God’s answer:
“Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name. “They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child. Then you will again see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.””
‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The last book of the Old Testament is a prophecy laid against the newly restored Israel, back from the Babylonian Captivity.

As typical of human beings, God has just delivered up a great blessing to Israel, completely undeserved, yet they are ungrateful, even hostile to God. “I have loved you, says the Lord, but you say, 'How have you loved us?'

Israel is portrayed as clueless towards God's blessings and their own sins. “You have wearied the Lord with your words, yet you say, 'How have we wearied him?”

There is also the eternal complaint that the just don't prosper while the evil do, “You have said 'It is vain to serve God and what do we profit by keeping his command...rather we must call the proud blessed for indeed evildoers prosper and even tempt God with impunity”

It is a formidable perspective, but it is wrong. In the book, God emphasizes his sovereignty not only over Israel, but over the entire Earth, and warns his people about the inevitable judgment, when things finally will make sense, when the good will be rewarded and the wicked punished. “Then you will again see the distinction between the just and the wicked; between him who serves God and him who does not serve him. For lo the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble”

Patience is one of the keys to salvation, but we can only be patient if we know where we're going. The end of days was very far from the time that this prophecy was written, it may be very far from the present yet. Sometimes however God provides reminders that his words will be fulfilled. As the bridge from the Old Testament to the new, the book sounds the morality of a people that was unprepared to receive Christ, and would be ungrateful and hostile to him. The end of days may yet be far, but within a relatively short period of time of the books publication, the temple had burned down, and Jerusalem had been destroyed, “blazing like an oven...all the proud and all evildoers...stubble”

Revelations 🤯
‭‭Malachi‬ ‭1:4‭-‬5‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[4] Edom may say, “Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins.” But this is what the Lord Almighty says: “They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord. [5] You will see it with your own eyes and say, ‘Great is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!’

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭1:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[8] When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭1:14‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[14] “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,” says the Lord Almighty, “and my name is to be feared among the nations.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[2] If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2:11‭-‬12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[11] Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god. [12] As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob—even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭2:13‭-‬16 ‭NIV‬‬
[13] Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. [14] You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
[15] Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.
[16] “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[2] But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3:8‭-‬12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[8] “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. [9] You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. [10] Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. [11] I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. [12] “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭3:14‭-‬15‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[14] “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord Almighty? [15] But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it.’ ”

‭‭Malachi‬ ‭4:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬
[1] “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.

Malachi, the last book in the Old Testament.

I have come to prove this scripture, the Lord watches over His Word to perform it: Malachi 3: 101-12: Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. Health and healing belongs to me. Bless the name of Jesus!

The people of God should probably listen to the commands of the Lord and do them.As Heschel points out, in the prophets we see God seemingly angry at things in a disproportionate manner - he is angry at their divorces, at the way they profane the sacrifices, at the way they call evil, good, for the oppression of the worker, the widow, the orphan, the foreigner, for robbing God of tithes and offerings. For this he will bring judgement? It seems so. But maybe the Lord knows the things that really matter? And the end of it all is blessing, not curse. When we return to the Lord he will return to us.

Short book that chastises Jews for bad behavior. Chapter 3 has a prophecy of Jesus, and Chapter 4 is a vivid description of judgment day and punishment of evildoers. But the "sun of righteousness will be healing with its rays."

Here is the last prophetic book of the Hebrew scriptures, also called the Old Testament. It's last in time order, just three hundred-odd years before the birth of Jesus.

In it, Malachi rebukes Israel for their complaining and lack of faithfulness to God. This is shown by them divorcing their wives and also failing to tithe to support the second Temple. Still, there were some faithful Jews who spoke of God to each other. God recognized them and promised He would protect them as His jewels.

Malachi is best known for his prophecy of John the Baptist, the first century AD prophet who came before Jesus. From Malachi 4:

5 “See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

This is one of the prophecies of which the interpretation is not in doubt. Jesus Himself said John the Baptist fulfilled it.

Luke 7: (NIV)

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’[b]

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

Yet He also hinted there would be another Elijah to come.

Matthew 17:
10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished.

Did you catch that? Jesus said Elijah will come and also He said Elijah has already come. That implies two Elijahs at two times.

But we don't know who or when or where, so we don't know everything.

(LAST BOOK OF OLD TESTAMENT) - 3 chapters.

Final overall thoughts on old testament. That was quite a ride I have no regrets sacrificing my time to read it, it's pretty educational. I would recommend everyone to read at least some of it, even just book 1,2,3, 5 and the last book. No matter if you are religious or not.

Roughly 100 years after return from Babylon in exile. Temple has been rebuilt. Poverty, injustice, new generation of Israel is corrupted. Exile changed nothing, Israel is still bad. Bad priests, low quality animal sacrifices, adultery and divorces for no good reason.

People hoped for prophecies to come true and for Messiah to come.
Israel accuses god of neglect, where is the god of justice?
People stopped giving 1/10 of their income annually to a temple. Without it u won't get blessed by god.
Ends with telling people to basically remember the law of the Torah of servant mosses. 03:22

Basically Israel was redeemed by god, then they betrayed him by rebellion and breaking rules of torah.

Hope:
God will send a new prophet/messiah who will restore gods people and heal their hard hearts. 03:23 before the final day of justice or however they call it.
Arrival of Israelite accompanied by god, and restoration of new Jerusalem.
Ultimate return from exile.

Old testament/Torah is a tale of human condition, evil.

01:07-08
02:07
02:11-12 (Marrying daughters of another god)
02:13-16 (causing sadness to god with divorces) 02:17 - then having guts to ask what did we do
03:05, 03:08-10.
03:14 - uh oh .
03:18-19
3:21 - uh oh, wild.

Here are my personal notes from this book.

•I have always loved you.

•Right knowledge is essential to maintain right relationships.

2:14 “Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife your your marriage vows.”
-I was recently cheated on. 😭

2:16 “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty.”
-Breaks the heart, destroys relationships, violates the integrity of the family.
-Cruel social crime
-I personally believe that sometimes divorce is the best option. 🤷‍♀️

3:2 “But who will be able to endure it when he comes?”
-People’s wickedness must be burns away by the fires of divine testing

4:1 “The day of judgement is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed-roots, branches, and all.”

Audience: disillusioned, cynical, callous, dishonest, apathetic, doubters and skeptics, truly wicked.

Most Protestants know Malachi as the final book in the Old Testament. The last few verses reference both Moses and Christ (technically "Elijah," but Elijah in this case is sometimes interpreted to mean Christ, too).

In that sense, it's a perfect bookend to the "law" portion of the Bible, since it looks back to the exodus and Mt. Sinai while also looking forward to the "grace" portion embodied by Jesus.

This is one of the Bible's shortest books but still packs in a lot of subtext. It doesn't shy back from its punches against wrong . . . but it also offers a great deal of right in the form of hope and redemption.

In other words, it gives readers the Bible (and history itself) in a nutshell!

The minor prophets really have been a joy to read through.

A new favorite passage of mine that seems relevant for today is found in Malachi 2:17

There was a real lack of taking God and His holiness seriously. God is love - he loves everyone (surely). He won’t punish the guilty - let’s not call anything for what it is (sin). Malachi says this wearies God!
It’s a false statement and yet most don’t understand the ramifications and ways that it angers Him.

This book also just lays out that there will be those that fear him and those who are evil and arrogant. These will be caught up in the fire while the righteous will have their blessing in heaven.
Seems to be some prophecy to not only John the Baptist but to a type of Elijah that’ll come in the end times as well.

Last book of the Old Testament and the last prophet, Malachi, that God used to bring out His Word.
Malachi warns the Jews to come back to God and to follow His laws and decrees. God so faithful to His chosen people that He restores them. Today this applies to each one of us who have accepted Jesus as His Lord and Savior and repent of sins that we commit on a daily basis. Run to Him when lost and find Him to be waiting with open arms to receive you. Never let the enemy rob you of what is rightfully yours in Jesus.

The book of Malachi is the thirty-ninth book in the Bible, and it is the final book of the Old Testament. It was written by the prophet Malachi and is a book of prophecy. There are no identifying features of who Malachi was or what king he prophesied under, but there are hints that he was speaking to those who lived in Judah.

Evidence supports that Malachi prophesied to his people while they were under Persian rule. Due to their circumstances, apathy was present in the Jews after a hundred years back from exile. They did not believe that God loved them, and then they continued to sin. Malachi’s prophecies pointed out that Israel needed to take responsibility for her own sins and serve God as their ancestors had done.

This book shows that the people of Israel were still straying from God, despite almost a thousand years of history showcasing His blessings for faithfulness and the punishments for straying. This book points to the promised Messiah, Jesus, noting that without God’s help, sinful man will always fall short. Praise God for Jesus.

The book of Malachi sums up what the whole Hebrew Bible has been pointing to—God's people cannot be faithful to the covenant. They've failed again and again. And while God will deal with their sin, he will not abandon them. He promises to redeem a remnant and send a Messiah to fulfill his covenant promises.

Consisting of four chapters, the BOOK OF MALACHI was the final Book of the Old Testament. It raised a controversial issue about corruption in Chapter 2 but ended with a lifetime reminder. "But for you who fear My Name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings, And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture (Malachi 4:2)."

Almost 9 months later…last book of the Old Testament in my year of reading scriptures in chronological order. I am struck by how rich the historical context, God’s voice, human frailty, human violence, and human resilience shines through….hope for the future and God’s love, yet despair and exile. A pause in anticipation of Jesus ❤️
