The Chronicles of Ageron #1

Altor: The Shadow Rebellion

Rate this book
As appealing as the thought of being a Sorcerer-Guardian is to Ajay Samuels, the harmonious existence between all Ageronians and Earthlies leaves little reason for him to put his abilities into practice. Abilities that should set him apart from the rest of his kind due to his status as an Altor; the elite and powerful body of seven succeeding families of the original seven Sorcerers elected to oversee and govern Ageron.

His monotonous life begins to change soon after experiencing a strange dream, and following his most vivid of premonitions, he senses a danger he knows too little of to do anything about. The world as he knows it all but vanishes following the most unexpected of confrontations with a new and powerful enemy he has never before had much to do with.

On his quest for further information, Ajay is confronted with more than he could ever have envisioned, and he knows everything about his life is about to change; for the worse.

L.J. deVet is the author of the children's picture books James and his Boots and Teddy's Christmas Wish, and ALTOR: The Shadow Rebellion, a fantasy fiction novel for teens and young adults, also the first book in The Chronicles of Ageron.

Published in 2012, ALTOR: The Shadow Rebellion (The Chronicles of Ageron), a fantasy fiction novel for children, teens and young adults, was Louis's debut publication. The following year, Louis released his first children's picture book, Teddy's Christmas Wish.

Louis spent 2015 working on a new children's picture book, James and his Boots. Based loosely on imaginative adventures he and his cousin embarked upon during their youth, Louis adapted the story to present the limitless imagination of all children; something of which he has been exposed to as a teacher, and something he always strives to nurture as an author.

The novel started with a good premise. The prologue was definitely fantastically dark. I loved some parts of the book especially the training; they were a real page-turner.

I had some issues with the consistency of this book. It started great but suddenly went downhill, then became interesting again at the near end.

The characters were great. Specifically, Ajay's Consor, Zaniel. There were a lot of characteristics which he possessed, and humor is unquestionably one of them.

I definitely felt a Harry Potter vibe while reading this. The 'envelishing' reminds me of Harry Potter's 'floo powder' except without the powder. And Ajay's friends remind me of Harry Potter's friends.

The second book is honestly something to look out for.

I enjoyed the premise of this book, it has a unique story and I was delighted that I had the chance to read it.
I had a few qualms about it though, some of the describing for me was a little too in depth, much like something from Charles dickens, paid by word count. I also found it hard to believe that Ajay was as young as he was, I know it's difficult to write a character so young, when you aren't a similar age, but I definitely thought that I was reading something narrated by a 21 year old at least.

I think it's a fantastic start to Mr deVet's writing career and I would recommend it for perhaps younger teenagers, maybe those aged between 12-15. I feel a little mean that I won this book in the giveaway and didn't enjoy it as much as other books I have read, so I will be passing this on to my younger siblings as well as my younger friends for them to review.

Its been too long since I have stayed up at night because the book remains too good to put down. I would definitely suggest reading The Shadow Rebellion. Especially if you enjoy books like Harry Potter and even the Pendragon series. This book made for a truly enjoyable book!!!

Starts off with a prologue about a vision. The main character is Ajay Samuels and he is a guardian sorcerer. Their kind also has pale skin. (They must hate the sun, sunburn ouch!)He has three abilities, telekinesis, premonitions, and envelishment. (I wish I had one ability. Out of these three, I would want telekinesis. It would be so fun to be able to lift things without using hands!) The sorcerer can't use their powers for their personal gains.

Setting: Ageron is their country that all the normal humans don't know about. There is this cloak that makes humans pass through from one end of Ageron to the other side without knowing there was a country in between. Like folding one end of the Earth and the other end and stick it together.

We learn that his family died in an "accident". His father was Lucillius, his mother was Mirabelle, and his baby sister was Annabelle. His parents died when they were 26 and his sister was 6 months old. A jay was only 5 when his family's life were cut short. He was raised by his grandparents after this.
His family is an Altor, the seven family groups descendents of the first Altor. He has to govern the people when he becomes 18. (Those family jobs that gets passed on, I would hate one.)

Ajay's best friend is Zaniel Richards, also aka. as Consor(like training partner.)Consors either become best friends or soul mates if they are opposite gender.Zaniel is a arrogant person, not patient, and loves to train.
His other friend is Lorna. Looks like the next book will have romance. Can't wait. He likes her but.. the author doesn't describe the love feeling really well. He never acknowledge that he has crush feelings for her. The author needs to polish that part. (I read quite a lot of romance books, I had a crush on a guy once, I know that crush feeling.)

In Ajay's premonition, he hears about "It won't be long now. They will be here soon and when they are nothing will stop me. Nothing will stop me." Sounds like a antagonist speaking. Foreshadows that action is going to happen.
A Venator attacks Ajay in the bathroom. A Venator has dark and hollow-like eyes. They have a dark history and causes trouble. The Venators are trying to free their leader who is captured by the Agerons. A long battle only causes casualties. One side will win and the other will fall... Go buy this book and read it if you want to know.
Pros- good describing. Showing not telling.
Cons- A jay does not talk like a 15 year old. I know how 15 year old guys talk and even the mature ones don't talk to adultish.

One spoiler hidden

Altor: The Shadow Rebellion has a great premise, story and offers a great cast of characters; however, some technical issues made it difficult to read. Let me explain. Most prominent are the repetitive words and phrases that are throughout the story. In some parts, it felt similar to déjà vu, as if I went back a few pages and I am reading the same pages twice. For example, This is only one example though. There other phrases that are reused too often, such as, “I can’t help but,” as well as a few others.

Despite these technical issues, I, in fact, enjoyed reading this story. Altor: The Shadow Rebellion by L.J. Devet is a great fantasy story filled with magic, action, and has enjoyable characters. With a few tweaks here and there, I look forward to reading the second book from The Chronicles of Ageron Series. I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I received a free paperback copy from L.J. Devet for my honest review.

I enjoyed this book, the story was very interesting. I will definitely let my 10 year old nephew read it too.
The book picks up at around page 80 or so which was a little disappointing and hard to get into the book. There were unfortunately many sections of the book where the description was lengthy, and could have been skipped. I also found that some scenes tended to repeat themselves without bringing anything new to the story line.
For an authors first novel, I enjoyed it, and will look forward to the sequel as the story has the ability to grow even more.

"In the words of the immortal Farookh Bulsara (Freddie Mercury) it's magnifico-o-o-o-o-o-o". One of the top 5 books tha I've read for a year or so. The prose is magnificent, and, although the plot is complew, it's relatively easy to follow. I shall recommend this to everybody that I know. BrILLIANT. get it read,
