Jean-Michel Charlier was a Belgian script writer best known as a writer of realistic European comics. He was a co-founder of the famed European comics magazine Pilote.
So let's see: Blueberry is a prisoner of the US army, most of the Apaches are under close guard on a reservation, but a small band of warriors are free and being hunted by the army. All he needs to do is escape, reunite the small band of warriors--including their leader, Victorio, who, um, um, hates him--with the rest of the tribe, and then get everyone off the reservation and safely to Mexico. Piece of cake!
It's beautiful to watch the whole scheme unfold. So many plot threads have been leading up to this, the most satisfying conclusion of the series to date. Even the brief To Be Continued moment at the end of the volume doesn’t diminish it.
Blueberry remains one of the all-time great comic book Westerns. Highly recommended!
Story: ***** The intelligence of it is astounding. He knows all sorts of horse-war manouvers, fake outs, migrations over rough terrain and that sort of thing while constantly creating desperate measures against huge odds for his characters.
Art: ***** It's fantastic but it simultaneously makes me feel dumb because Moebius is A1+ yet I cannot grasp its splendour. It obviously showcases some of the best panels that I've ever seen but not at all to an effect of worship.
Coulour: ** It's all sunburned. It's like it's been sitting in the sun and has off-centered by a hair. Yellow and orange dominate.
Ghost Tribe is, to me, the most satisfying Blueberry volume yet. Mike’s stratagems go to the next level; he really can’t be stopped. I think the most enjoyable thing is you start to really see the other characters, i.e. Blueberry’s rivals, appreciating his genius. They can’t help it.
Great art but a plot that goes goofy at times. If you enjoy spaghetti westerns or John Ford westerns or John Wayne westerns or westerns, the art here will capture you. Page layout is changing compared to past volumes.
Blueberry outsmarts the US Military Command helps the apaches free their comrades and escape back to Mexico. Now he has to confront the Army and restore his name.
