Highlander Conor McDougall takes Victoria Westcott captive after raiding her English home and killing her cruel husband. Not welcome by his clan, Victoria sneaks into Conor's chamber to convince him to take her with him to battle not understanding she may be in for a fight of her own.
Bestselling author Hildie McQueen loves unusual situations and getting into interesting adventures, which is what her characters do as well. She writes romance because she is in love with love! Author of Romance in Highland historical, Western Historical and contemporary, she writes something every reader can enjoy.
Most days she can be found in her pajamas hiding from deliverymen while drinking tea from her David Gandy coffee mug. In the afternoons she browses the Internet for semi-nude men to post on Facebook.
Hildie's favorite past-times are romance conventions, traveling, shopping and reading.
She resides in beautiful small town Georgia with her super-hero husband Kurt, an unruly boy Chihuahua Pepito and a spoiled rotten girl Chiweenie named Lola.
I am a huge Hildie fan from her Protector's series, so when I saw she had a new novella series I had to read it. It is not my normal genre. I actually only recently started to delve into the world of historicals and have found that I really like them. I am a bit torn as to whether or not I would classify this as a serial novel. It has some of the elements I like to see in them. It is short and has an over all story arc that they novellas take you through. That being said, from the two I have read so far, they also can be read as individual books because they have each focused on a different couple. Whatever I would categorize them as, I love them and plan to read them all as soon as they come out.
This installment did a nice job of setting the scene for the series. You have a young kidnapped woman who is treated very well. You know from the beginning that there is more to the kidnapping than meets the eye. Of course, because of the genre, you know it gets quite hot at times, but to me the story was more than that. I was so glad the second novella was written before I discovered the first. Trust me, you are going to want to get both. I hope the next one comes out today ;)!
This book (short story) has promise. It needs work. You start out in the middle of something and are left wondering what the hell happened. The interaction between Conor and Victoria is hot, heavy and awesome, but the whole book just felt incomplete. I understand it's a mini series, but there really needs to be more work done to each installment to make them worth while.
Steamy and hot. But the end!? Noooo! What happened? There's not enough information in the story. It was taken out of context, I want to know the benning and the end.
Victoria Wescott endures both physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her cruel husband. When the Scots come across the border and raid her husband's castle, she is actually relieved that he is killed, but her worst fears are realized when she is taken prisoner and brought north, all the way to the seat of Clan MacDougall, Highland home of the raiding party. Feeling unwelcome as the lone Englishwoman in a clan of suspicious and wary Scots, Victoria clings to the one person she has built a fragile trust with, Conor MacDougall. Their attraction to one another is undeniable, but Conor may have to marry for political reasons. And Victoria's brother, a privateer renowned for his ruthlessness, will not stand idly by once he learns his sister has been abducted and her husband murdered. Will Victoria and Conor find a way to be together despite his duty and his clan's mistrust of the English? Will the MacDougalls be able to avert a war with Victoria's brother and his forces?
This novella is an enthralling quick read with plenty of action that grabbed me right from the start. Despite some problems with editing, the writing is fluid and easy, and I read this story in one sitting in a single rainy afternoon. In addition to the main characters, Conor and Victoria, this novella contained a number of surprisingly well-drawn and compelling minor characters for a work of this length. Hopefully, they will make an appearance in future installments in this series--and I am very much looking forward to reading more of McQueen's work in the future. Anyone who likes historical fiction, particularly those who have an interest in Scotland, will enjoy this novella.
The history of the war between Scotland and England, how it affected the clans. This family has exuberant honor and loyal clan members. Victoria has experienced abuse, loveless marriage and yearns for happiness. As reading this book, I could picture the scenery, the characters; as in watching the story unfold. Now I'm going to read book 2.
This short read was fun, flirty and sexy! The characters were attractive and appealing. We got two romances for the price of one :) Lots of erotic moments which were hot and steamy. I found it light and entertaining. Not enough time to really get to know the characters on a deep level, but still an enjoyable.
I love Hildie's books. They are so much fun. Their is sexual encounters, playfulness, and male tension. They make you feel like you are right there. There are times when I wouldn't mind. Thanks Hildie
