Swinging Gotham Big City, big New York’s jazz scene of the 1920s It’s the Roaring Twenties, and New York is exploding with jazz fever. Crowds flock to the nightclubs and dance halls in Harlem to see the likes of Louis Armstrong with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra playing at the Kentucky Club, or Duke Ellington at the Roseland Ballroom or the world-famous Cotton Club . Designed, illustrated, and edited by Robert Nippoldt, this award-winning book pays homage to this exceptional era, via an entertaining blend of illustrations, facts, and amusing anecdotes presenting 24 leading lights of New York’s jazz scene in the 1920s, complete with a CD containing some of their best tunes. The texts, contributed by Hans-Jürgen Schaal, give a vivid account of the club scene and the “band battles,” as well as the legendary recording sessions. A splendid read, a groovy CD—and not strictly for jazz fans only!
"Jazz: New York in the Roaring Twenties" by Robert Nippoldt and Hans-Jürgen Schaal offers a visually stunning and musically rich exploration of the iconic jazz scene of 1920s New York City. Nippoldt's illustrations and Schaal's prose vividly capture the atmosphere and personalities of the era. The accompanying 20-track CD provides a diverse selection of music, adding depth to the narrative. While the book may cover familiar ground for jazz enthusiasts, its high production values and engaging content make it a worthwhile addition to any collection. However, some readers may find the content lacking in new insights. Overall, "Jazz: New York in the Roaring Twenties" is a beautifully crafted celebration of jazz history that will appeal to both casual readers and seasoned aficionados.
Large in format if slight in content, a small overview of Jazz in NYC during the roaring 1920s, beautifully illustrated. More of a coffee table book than a history of this most vital period in Jazz music, it's a nice collector item as it includes some rare recordings.
This is such an interesting and well-produced book with beautiful illustrations and so much information. I was worried it would feel overwhelming but it’s really easy to absorb. Bonus points for the CD!
Spotty study of a selection of jazz artists in New York during the twenties. Doesn't even attempt to be a comprehensive history. Emphasis is on the drawings.
