It’s a good thing Gabe Bristow lives and breathes the Navy SEAL credo, “the only easy day was yesterday,” because today, his life is unrecognizable. When his prestigious career comes to a crashing halt, he’s left with a bum leg and few prospects for employment that don’t include a desk.
That is, until he’s offered the chance to command a private hostage rescue team and free a wealthy American businessman from Colombian paramilitary rebels. It seems like a good deal—until he meets his new team: a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic, and an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses. Oh, and who could forget the sexy, frustratingly impulsive Audrey Van Amee? She’s determined to help rescue her brother—or drive Gabe crazy. Whichever comes first.
As the death toll rises, Gabe’s team of delinquents must figure out how to work together long enough to save the day. Or, at least, not get themselves killed. Because Gabe’s finally found something worth living for, and God help him if he can’t bring her brother back alive.

SEAL of Honor is the first book in Tonya Burrows' HORNET series, and romantic suspense lovers, you do not want to miss this story!
Gabe Bristow’s life as a Navy SEAL comes to a screeching halt – not because of terrorists or IEDs or any of the usual things associated with badass military men and their career ending injuries, but because of a car accident. He was lucky he didn’t lose his leg, but being left with a foot so badly messed up he’s forced to leave the teams, Gabe is struggling to accept the possibility of life behind a desk which, for man like Gabe, is the worst thing that could happen.
But then he’s made an offer too good to refuse: Head a private hostage rescue team to rescue a wealthy American businessman from Colombian rebels looking to make a bundle on ransom. Gabe recognizes this as a chance to continue doing what he loves most and thought he’d never be able to do again, so he reluctantly accepts. Everything is finally looking up until he meets his new team: “a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic, and an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses.” Then toss in the determined, impulsive, and far too sexy Audrey Van Amee, sister of the kidnapped man who wants to be in on the rescue, and Gabe finds he got more than he bargained for.
Romantic suspense is one of my favorite genres, but it’s hard to find an author who can do the genre justice. To make me a happy reader, there has to be a solid, gripping story, characters I can care about, the right amount of action – both in bed and out, and a happily ever after that leaves me with a contented smile on my face. That’s a lot to ask for, but Tonya Burrows pulled it off beautifully, and I’ll definitely be reading more by this very talented author.
My thanks to J.J. Bonds and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review. It was a pleasure!
Opening Line: “God help him if he didn’t make it to the airport by seven.”
Well hello lick-worthy cover! Romantic suspense lovers (and fans of Cindy Gerard) may want to check out Tonya Burrows' new HORNET series. Featuring a rag-tag band of (yummy) former military men who once they get the kinks worked out might actually be able to do the job. Unruly, unorganised, unprepared and underequipped, these misfits make up the newly formed hostage rescue and negation team of "Hornet". They’re all experts in their assorted military fields fields’ but they’re also just a little off, hence being available on a moment’s notice.
Within hours of being put together the guys find themselves on a plane bound for Bogotá Columbia. Led by our hero de jour Gabriel Bristow; a former Navy SEAL on involuntary early retirement after a foot injury sidelined him. Rather than park his ass behind a desk in Washington Gabe takes his best friend Quinn up on his offer to command a privately funded merc-for-hire group which keeps him in the adrenaline charged soldier game he loves. A minute to consider his new life would have been nice but, they already have their first mission; finding and extracting a wealthy businessman from Columbian rebels. This thrown together unit is of course nowhere near ready to go, never mind working together, they’re a mess and that’s what makes them awesome.
This is an action filled read that gets going almost immediately, introducing flighty artist Audrey Van Amee as the sister of the hostage whose invaluable Spanish skills see her becoming a somewhat distracting member of the team. We spend a bit of time getting the introductions out of the way of course (as this is a first book in the series) so there’s some info dumping. But I have to say Burrows did a great job of giving us just enough page time on each of the team members (and their troubled pasts) that I’m intrigued enough to anticipate the next book.
Burrows uses a fair bit of military jargon here, which I loved as it put me more into the story and I also appreciated the often hilarious f-bomb filled banter between the guys. Gabe and Quinn in particular have a very sweet bromance going. Where I had a problem was the melodramatic internal dialogue (mostly spouted on Gabe’s part) which seemed out of sync with the whole tone.
“Her pleading all but shattered his heart. He couldn’t deny her, even though every instinct screamed to get far, far away.”
The ending wraps things up very nicely, leaving us anticipating the next Hornet to have his story told and as Gabe seemed the least screwed up it seems sure we’ll get a tortured hero.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing who provided a copy in exchange for an honest review.
HORNET series is growing on me. I really enjoy this series although I did not read it in order. Miss Burrows proofs herself to be an excellent writer for military romance. What I like the most is the combination of the action and the romance. It has that perfect balance so the story line is enjoyable.
What I do not like is Gabe back and forth toward Audrey. I wish he can be more decisive like his leadership in his team. While Audrey, she is kick ass heroine. Their conversation is simmering hot. Although it is not sizzling, the simmering is good and enjoyable to be adding into the romance aspect.
I should give this book even more stars for the edible man on the cover! Lets all just take a moment and breathe in his male-ness and imagine all of the dirty things that we would do to him....
Need another second? Sure...
Okay, onto my review! This book falls squarely in the romantic suspense category, which really isn't my thing. I hate books that are too suspense-y. I get antsy and sweaty and nervous if I think my beloved characters are in jeopardy. However, this book managed to be a very nice read despite my lack of enthusiasm about the genre. I liked the heroine (Audrey), who I thought was sexy and take charge in a nice way. She wasn't whiney and passive, which I really appreciated. Gabe, the MC, was a hot ex-navy seal who really had me rooting for him. The chemistry between the two main characters was there and electric. To boot, I think the action scenes were great and the writing was on point.
What didn't I like? Well, for starters, I could tell that this book was trying to give teasers for what we would see in the next books in the series. Each member of the private hostage negotiation crew had his own set of deep seeded issues that were introduced, setting the stage for each of the guys to have his own book in the future. What I didn't enjoy about that was that the main plot got kind of lost along the way. It became too jumbled keeping track of each guy and his particular problems. I also thought that the book lost some steam with its length. I found myself putting it down and picking it back up days later because part of the book dragged and didn't keep my interest.
Despite a few flaws, this book was a very nice read in the romantic suspense category. A must read for those girls who are obsessed with hot military men and want a new series to follow!

With a leg injury, Gabe Bristow's career as a Navy SEAL comes to an end. At loose ends, he takes a position commanding a private hostage rescue team. Their first mission? Free a wealthy American businessman from Colombian rebels. His new team, though, is quite a hodge-podge of rejects from various government agencies and branches of the military. As if that weren't enough, he also has to deal with Audrey Van Amee. She's the sister of the missing man and determined to help rescue her brother. She's also the woman Gabe feels something for, for the first time in a long time. They're determined to make whatever is between them work, but that will be difficult to do if Gabe can't bring her brother back alive.
I have to be honest and say that this didn't grab me straight away. It took a while for me to warm up to this ragtag group and get into this story. Part of that may have to do with the fact that this is a first book in a new series, and, as such, there was a lot of information and introductions to get through. That's a difficult thing for any first book in a series, and this was no different.
Once the story began to pick up, though, the excitement factor kicked in, and I found the book hard to put down at that point. There is a very good balance of action and romance in this book. Everything seemed to fit within the context of the story. Gabe and Audrey have very good chemistry together. There are even spots of humor throughout which provided some necessary levity.
Tonya Burrows has a really fun, sexy, exciting new series on her hands, and I have a feeling each new book will only get better as she reveals more about each member of the team. For those who love romantic suspense, pick this one up and give it a try!

Lurved it! For all you Cindy Gerard fans, this will not disappoint. This has great dialogue, with little bits of humor thrown in; the plot's solid and easy to follow with great pacing that never lost it's momentum. Tonya Burrow's characters are full of personality and they all have their own demons to deal with, which leaves me eagerly awaiting the next book in the installment.
Enjoy!
A special thanks goes out to Elizabeth for finding this little gem. Thanks Lizzie!
Once in a while a book comes along, and after reading a chapter or two you know you are going to devour everything that the author has and will release in the future. Tonya Burrows is definitely in that category for me. After about 10 pages of SEAL of Honor, I knew that I had found my next ‘go-to’ series. No surprise really seeing as I love the Wilde brothers, I am however in the unenviable position where I will be in a constant state of anticipation waiting for each and every one of these men to now get their books.
First up - Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Bristow, former commanding officer of the American Navy, SEAL Team Ten.
And his team –
Travis Quinn Jesse Warwick Marcus Deangelo Jean-Luc Cavalier Ian Reinhardt Eric ‘Harvard’ Physick and Seth Harlan.
I fell a little in love with every one of these guys in this book, and I cannot wait for each and every one of them to get their own story.
Audrey Van Amee, is in Colombia looking for her brother Bryson, who has been kidnapped by a group of paramilitary rebels. Gabe and the rest of HumInt, Inc.'s Hostage Rescue & Negotiation Team are also in town for the same purpose. After a rather unconventional introduction the chemistry between Audrey & Gabe is undeniable, even though the circumstances are less than ideal.
You feel it too, don't you? From that first moment there’s been something between us. Chemistry.”
Well fuck it. He’d planned for Audrey to see him naked sooner or later after this mess was over, when involvement with her wouldn’t be considered unprofessional. Might as well be sooner, though this wasn't exactly how he’d imagined it going down. There was supposed to be kissing involved. Some licking. And groping. Lots of groping on both their parts.
A massive plus in this book for me is Audrey, I love a woman who has confidence in herself and has a kick-ass attitude to match.
”Could you shoot a firearm and no hit me if the situation came down to that?” “I was born and raised in the South, honey, but I’m no Southern belle. I shoot what I aim at.”... “But it’s still up in the air whether I’ll aim at you or not.”
Against the odds and in the face of adversity are always two great tropes for a romance to blossom in my opinion. I loved the way this couple gelled, Audrey balanced Gabe perfectly, with her bohemian artiness against his structured rigidity.
Gabe made such a striking picture standing there in the dying sunlight, dressed in a tux with his bowtie undone around his neck and a fatigued expression of pure concentration on his face, that she wished for her paints.
This felt good. This felt right. He could learn to love this.
It does and I agree, looking forward to more books in this series.
SEAL of Honor felt like a movie plot starring some hunky (or group of hunky actors, as is the case here!) actor parading through South America on a rescue mission. There was danger, lots of suspense and of course, a steamy romance!
Gabe Bristow is forced to take an early retirement from the Navy SEALS because of an injury. Being Lieutenant Commander was very much part of his identity so he doesn’t quite know what to do with himself until his best friend and former teammate, Travis Quinn, serves up an offer he can’t refuse. Not that he’s completely excited to become part of the HumInt Inc. Hostage Rescue and Negotiation Team, aka HORNET, a group privately funded, but he doesn’t want to sit behind a desk for the rest of his life either. So he agrees to become the man in charge, the Commanding Officer of their task force.
There is no wait time for action because they already have a time sensitive mission. A wealthy American has been taken hostage in Bogotá, Columbia and the FBI refuses to send in a team to rescue him. They’re hired by the insurance company to retrieve Bryson Van Amee before they have to pay out the hefty ransom. HORNET’S newly formed team of rag tag experts better get their act together quickly, because Van Amee’s life is in their hands, and time is running out. Another wrench in the works is Van Amee’s sister, Audrey who flies down to Columbia to look for her brother after getting no help from any government organization.
I wasn’t expecting to be thrown into this much action pretty much right off the bat! I was quickly clicking through the pages to find out what happened next! Gabe and Audrey meet in this adrenaline charged situation and it’s basically lust at first sight, but the dangerous situations that they’re thrown into causes them to rely and lean on each other in very intimate ways! His breath tickled her ear. “I have another injury that needs kissing.” She smiled into the gathering dark. “Do you?” “Mm.” He rolled her over and propped himself up on one elbow, bending down until his mouth hovered millimeters above hers. “Right…” He bussed his lips over hers, caught her lower lip in a gentle tug that she felt all the way to her womb. “…here.”
Oh, my!
The romance was sweet and spicy, and interspersed throughout this nail-bitingly suspenseful read. Even though I had my suspicions about who was behind the kidnapping plot, it still unraveled in a mysterious way and there were heart pounding scenes right up to the end!
This was a quick and entertaining read, and really didn’t feel like 352 pages long. You could easily get through this in one sitting. I think we’ll probably have stories coming centering on the other hunky members of HORNET, because this is book one in a series, and SEAL of Honor wraps up nicely. I think any sequels will be just as entertaining, because each member has their own troubled past hinted at, and I want to know their secrets!
A copy was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
Yes I did pick it because it had a hot cover!! Shame on me!!
It all started out really good
* Hot Navy SEAL's! * Alpha males * Packed with action * Promising plot line
Then it all went south for me
* All action not enough romance * Heroine annoyed me * The plot got a bit lost in the middle and * I didn't feel connected to the characters by the end
Which is such a shame as I really did think the start was promising and had potential!
I still think others should try it as I always think just because I didn't like it does not mean others will feel the same
I enjoyed the cast of characters, the humor, and the action/adventure part of the story (4 to 5 stars). The romance and sex between the H and h had an amateurish quality to it that threw off their chemistry (1 to 2 stars). This was a middle-of-the-road read for me.
Lt. Commander Gabriel Bristow is not looking forward to his forced medical retirement. A year ago, he was involved in a car accident and suffered a serious injury to his foot, leaving him unfit to return to duty as a Navy SEAL. He's all set to begin his boring Pentagon job when he's approached by his best friend and former SEAL teammate, Travis Quinn, to sign on to a private hostage rescue and negotiation team as the commanding officer. It didn't take much for him to cave.
The set up The first covert assignment is the rescue of wealthy businessman Bryson Van Amee who was kidnapped in Bogotá, Columbia. They're racing against time as the FBI special agent in charge of the official negotiation wants to pay the ransom. Gabe is convinced that Bryson will be murdered if they do.
The issues There were LOTS of issues, the first being Gabe's team. Individually, they represent the best at what they do but this isn't a SEAL team working in tandem. They're an undisciplined group and Gabe hasn't the time to properly train them. When they visit Bryson's apartment, they unexpectedly run into his sister, Audrey, and end up having to bring her back to their safe house and she's unwilling to leave. To make matters worse, they're not even sure who they're dealing with or where the kidnappers might be located, nor do they have the most ideal equipment to be operating in the jungles of Columbia.
The romance Audrey and Gabe get thrown into a situation where they're isolated from the rest of the team and are repeatedly trying not to get killed. While they definitely had an initial attraction, these circumstances just turned the heat up beyond boiling. She's a free spirit but no air head. He's a SEAL and a commander, used to be obeyed, so Audrey's tendency to apply her own logic and reason made for some tense situations. Gabe's hard to resist and Audrey's a good match for this alpha.
What works At first I was frustrated by all the mishaps due to the team's inexperience and lack of discipline but then found this to be the strength of the story. Their imperfections set them apart from being just another military-like op team. There are some unique members I definitely want to know more about and this team will never behave in an ordinary way. Gabe and Audrey work as a couple and they suffered some harsh situations. The story was unpredictable and I was never prepared for most of the things that happened.
Bottom line I like this story and what this series promises to be. Gabe is excellent as a leader and he's going to have his hands full with this team and Audrey. There's lots of action, twists and surprises. I enjoyed it from start to finish and am ready for the next one. If you like a lot of heat, both in the action and the romance, this book delivers. I really didn't want it to end.
Steam Meter: SC (Sexual Content: sexual activity with detailed description)
Usually I'm easy to please by a romantic suspense. Give me an alpha, hot, badass hero, a passable heroine that isn't too TSTL and thrown in a good suspense plot and I can guarantee I will enjoy it. But that's really not the case with SEAL of Honor.
It started off pretty good and I'm intrigued with the HORNET team. We have Gabe, the hero who had discharged from SEAL together with Quinn due to a car accident. I think it pissed him off that he didn't died in a war zone instead. Gabe suffered from a bad leg and had to walk with a cane, while Quinn's medical issue is much easier to hide in plain sight. Quinn persuaded Gabe to go private much to his reluctance. But the only other option is a desk job, which he despise more.
So they build up the HORNET team, which basically deal with hostage rescue mission. I like getting to know their team of misfit soldiers. We have an ex-FBI agent, ex-medical soldier, ex-CIA analyst and an explosive expert. All of them have a very distinct personality that definitely piqued my interest to read each of their story later. The funniest of the bunch of of course Jean-Luc, the Frenchman who can speak almost 20 languages and also a human jukebox. He can sing everything on the radio. Too bad, they said he sucks at it.
Okay, let's talk about the suspense. Due to this being a hostage rescue mission, there isn't a scenario of who-done-it, unlike in a homicide case. Thus, the suspense plot is not as strong. Gabe and his team were going about in Colombia, but I don't felt the sense of urgency in it. I also don't appreciate the fact that Gabe kept getting ambushed and captured. It kind of loss the kickass appeal.
On the romance part with Audrey, the hostage's sister, it was insta and flat. They met each other for the first time and felt an instant attraction. And within a day or two, they talked like an adult and acknowledged about it. The only thing that prevent them from jumping on each other is the fact that Gabe wanted to remain professional while they are still on a mission. I'm all for a good healthy communication between two person, but I did't felt invested in their romance or eager for the sex scene.
Even though I didn't root for the couple, the military stuff was well research and the action was pretty solid too. And Due to the fact that I like the supporting characters and can see some potential in this series, I will still try out Book 2.
I really, really like this new series by Tonya Burrows. It has taken me a long time to finally start it because I was deeply disappointed by the last book, Too Wilde to Tame, in the "Wilde Security" series. This series is off to a good start, especially if you like your heroes flawed and your heroines with backbone. The men of HORNET are cobbled together, not the cohesive unit that you have come to expect in book of this type (think author Cindy Gerard's books). These guys have different backgrounds, strengths, weaknesses and they all have attitude, but that just seems to make me love them all the more when the finally get it together and rote to baddies.
Gabe Bristow was career Navy. He wanted nothing other than to lead his SEAL team on their missions, but all that was stripped away by an auto accident that left him with a disability and a bleak view of his future as a desk jockey. Then he is offered the chance to command a private hostage rescue team and their first assignment is to free a wealthy American businessman from Colombian paramilitary rebels. Gabe is up for the challenge until he meets his new team: Jean-Luc, a drunk Cajun linguist, Harvard, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, Marcus, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, Jesse, a cowboy medic, Ian, an EOD expert as volatile as the bombs he defuses, and Quinn, a former SEAL and the only man Gabe really knows and trusts, with medical issues of his own.
This assignment should be a simply snatch and grab, but with a team that has never worked together and with several members with no military experience, that may not be the outcome. Add to the mix, Audrey, the very lovely sister of the captive businessman, Bryson Van Amee, and anything can happen. Especially as the sparks fly when Gabe and Audrey meet. Getting Bryson out alive turns out to be a complicated matter, but the ragtag crew pull is off and the only casualty is Gabe's heart.
Okay, so I normally don't write reviews - I just love to read & take advice from my fellow goodreaders. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Tonya Burrows Seal of Honor. I actually tweeted Tonya personally because I had read somewhere that this was her first published book. So I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. I read a lot of Catherine Mann, Cindy Gerard, Pamela Clare - all military romances, all of which are 1st class & I believe Tonya is up there with them. I think the book is gritty, thrilling, romantic & funny. Without giving the story line away - because I don't like spoilers. All the characters are strong and eventually (I'm hoping) will have their own book. First up is Gabe & heroine Audrey, he is a typical alpha military male with his issues, medical or otherwise, he is the leader of the new HORNET (rescue team) I absolutely loved Audrey, she was strong, witty, loveable and slightly psychotic - which had me laughing out loud (two pump chump - buy it & see). She came out with things that in other romance novels I wanted a heroine to say, she kept Gabe on his toes and in many ways she was alpha (but let him think otherwise)The storyline itself changed throughout and kept me interested. I really enjoyed all of it and I hope Tonya keeps the pace throughout the rest of the series.
Egads, this wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I DNF’d right around the 25% mark. Here’s what made me pull the plug:
1. The heroine, Audrey, is an artist. When her brother is kidnapped (who he’s kidnapped by isn’t really relevant. Just know it was your standard, run-of-the-mill romantic suspense novel baddie), what does she do? Well, she immediately drops her life in Costa Rica and journeys to Colombia to save him. By herself. Does she try and work with the FBI on bringing him home? Nope. Why do that when you can go to his apartment and start investigating on your own? Surely her skills as an artist will help her solve the crime, right? Ugh. Just...ugh. I have an absolute zero-tolerance policy regarding TSTL heroines, and at this point in the story, I’m side-eyeing Audrey REALLY hard.
2. Sequel bait. The hero’s elite team of ex-military/special forces/FBI hotties is just brimming with sequel fodder. Here’s what I have to say to the rest of the team, considering this isn’t their story: I don’t care about you. Any of you. Don’t. Care. Get off the pages so that the hero and heroine can take charge of the story like they’re supposed to in a romance novel.
3. Is it really that easy to develop a team of mercs? Seemed like it should be more complicated than that. And would a team that was developed, like, an HOUR ago really be ready to throw themselves into a high-stakes hostage negotiation? I’m calling bullshit on this one. 4. During their first real conversation together, Audrey is super flirty with the hero (I can’t even remember his name because he was soooooo boring) and asks him if he’s as attracted to her as she is to him. He reminds her that he can’t afford to be distracted since her brother’s life is on the line. I kind of had to agree. I’m thinking that if my brother was being held prisoner in Colombia by run-of-the-mill romantic suspense baddies that my main concern wouldn’t be forcing the dude helping me rescue him to admit his attraction to me. 5. The hero (again, the name of whom I don’t care to recall), practically as soon as he sees the heroine, feels that he needs to push her the hell away, because he just knows he won’t be able to keep his dick in his pants around her. Now, at this point in the story, she’s a total stranger. He has no idea if she’s even remotely interested in seeing his dick. I mean, she might be a lesbian or something. But our boy here is just so sure he’ll end up in bed with her that he can’t stand the sight of her. Wow. He really thinks very highly of himself, doesn’t he? Or, he just plans to take whatever he wants from Audrey. And those thoughts as I’m reading REALLY make me question if the dude I’ve been reading about is the story’s hero, or its villain. (Not a good thing in a romance, folks.) 6. At 25% of the story, Audrey says, “I’m a woman, duh. And a Southern woman, to boot. Manipulation is what we do best.” And...I’m out. Manipulation is what women do best? Really? Are we sure the author isn’t a misogynist old white guy? I was offended on behalf of all women by this quote. (especially Southern women)
So, long-story-short, this isn’t a read I can recommend to anyone. Well, except maybe the chick who was standing in my way at the grocery studying a carton of yogurt as if it held the answers to all of life’s mysteries. She can read this book. She deserves it. (And while I’m at it: It’s yogurt, lady. Just pick one up and move along so that those of us who actually know what we want can get the hell out of there and go home.)
(Side note: to the dude on the cover, I say: Nicely done, sir. Sorry you weren’t able to grace a book that I actually enjoyed)
This was a great book; I loved Audrey and Gabe together. The romance and suspense parts were perfectly balanced. Special mentions: I loved that Gabe was ready to move from DC to Costa Rica for Audrey. Usually, it's the woman who is expected to uproot her entire life for love. It was a treat to watch the unflappable "Stonewall" fall for Aud.
I'm excited to read more about the secondary characters. I may have found my next favourite author in RS, so I'm off to explore more from Tonya Burrows.
SEAL of Honor is a not-to-miss debut novel by Tonya Burrows. This up and coming author delivered an exciting story of ex seals that are die hard for life threatening adventures. I have a feeling this author will make her mark in the romantic suspense genre.
Ms. Burrows delivered a realistic alpha male of our time. And when I say, “of our time”, I mean men of this world that are protective, passionate, strong, sexy and skilled but also very human that pain, disability and death are all possibilities.
Gabe is an ex-SEAL who was injured and can no longer do his job. He has found a way to do what he enjoys, in a form of covert operations group called HORNET(Hostage Rescue and Negotiation Team). Their first mission is to rescue Audrey’s brother from Columbian kidnappers, which brought this book a whole lot of action and suspense for the team. Gabe, the sexy and very hot Gabe (who I pictured to look like the cover of this book) is the alpha of our time that I mentioned earlier. I love that despite his disability, he is still a very capable man. In this case, he was able to protect and not just by kicking ass and killing everyone, but by the sacrifice of getting his ass kicked by their abductors. It was not pretty. Let me tell you, this book had me at the edge of my seat as if I was watching a movie.
I was scared for Gabe and Audrey; the realistic scenes Ms. Burrows wrote are actual scenes that prevent me from visiting other countries. It is some scary shit. I am impressed Audrey had handled herself well, and she had the guts to go to Columbia to look for her brother to begin with. She is definitely no pansy heroine in distress who needs saving. She is without a doubt a ballsy heroine. Gabe and Audrey is a perfect match and boy did they get pretty damn hot together.
I am very excited about this series. Right off the bat, the HORNET members showed a lot of power, camaraderie, skills in the field and these men were so funny. When I think of them, I hear the music from Bad Boys the movie with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Well, because they are total bad boys. Ms. Burrows did a great job giving each member personalities that are very intriguing leaving readers wanting more.
The rest of the team are Jean-Luc, Jesse, Marcus, Harvard, Ian and Quinn. I am most interested in Jean-Luc who I think is a very passionate man and skilled with multiples partners from what this books tell us…team partners is what I mean. Making him a very good HORNET team of course. The set up for these men are there, but I think the next book might be about Quinn who is having issues staying with team. Sounds like big drama to me, I cannot wait to get more of this series.
Oh!!! Me encanto!!!
**Quickie review--full review to come closer to release**
I've been lusting after this book since the second I spotted it's cover and mmmm yeah it so lived up to expectations. Burrows totally won me over with her ragtag group of men and one hell of a heroine.
These guys are all a little bit broken, a little bit ornery and are all completely bad ass. I loved all of them and getting to watch them feel each other out and test boundaries as they head out on their first mission together as a private hostage rescue team.
The suspense moved along nicely and surprised me a time or two and the romance, while not the main focus of the story, was wonderful as well. A reserved Navy SEAL with a quiet strength and authority and a heroine with a backbone of steel and unbelievable courage that speaks her mind and rises to any occasion. Yeah these two kicked ass and had a great dynamic going.
Definitely a series that has me excited and that I'll be keeping an eye on.
***2/4/13***Hellooooo sexy cover! Sounds like it's going to be an interesting series!
The Utmost talented new author I'd very fortunately discovered.
It felted like Tonya Burrows has read all my favorite authors; Lora Leigh, Suzanne Brockmann, Pamela Clare, Cindy Gerard, etc...and took out all my pet peeves while creating this incredible story for my sole enjoyment.
Although SEAL of Honor is one of many ex-SEAL/military turned mercenaries hired out for rescue missions...it's still different. It is better, better plot, well developed 'flawed' secondary characters and it had not relied too heavily on erotic scenes to hold the readers' attention.

Throwing a bunch of alpha males together to make up a team of bad-asses and send them on dangerous missions is bound to have their fair share of problems: insubordination, egos, toeing the line, being disrespectful and not following orders. That alone already has me hooked on this series. Each member has their own unique story and temperament. I can’t wait to discover more about each one of them. But let us start with the fearless leader, Gabe. Oh, I do love that name.
Gabe was a Navy SEAL until a car accident forced him into medical retirement. Being a SEAL was his life. He lived and breathed it. The prospect of taking on a desk job at the Pentagon thanks to his father, the Admiral, has him sweating bullets, until his friend Quinn talks him into taking on the job as a mercenary and the new leader of Hornet. Piece of cake, right? Not exactly. Getting a bunch of strangers together to form a team and trust one another while making it clear that he’s in charge is just the beginning of his problems. His new team only has days to rescue kidnapped businessman, Bryson Van Amee. When it rains, it pours. Gabe never expected that he’d be dragging a civilian along in the form of a spunky and sexy Southern Belle package – Audrey Van Amee.
Audrey is a struggling artist living in Costa Rica. She witnessed her brother’s kidnapping during their Skype session and ultimately headed to Bogota to do some reconnaissance of her own.
Lucky for her that she bumped into the good guys first. How convenient that the team only had one member fluent in Spanish, and she was the other option. Naturally the impulsive, free-spirited, flighty, mouthy and capricious Audrey got paired with the leader who was so stiff (pun intended) that it would take all her feminine wiles to get him to cut loose a little. It didn’t take long before they were captured by a bunch of guerrillas, and Audrey got to see up close and personal just what it took to survive in the wild. It’s kill or be killed. But she let Gabe handle that part because her mama taught her that “violence breeds violence”. I half expected Gabe to say to her “If you want to live, do as I say”, but he never did. Instead he went soft when the water works came. I expect this is what he saw:
I liked irritatingly adorable Audrey. I enjoyed her mouthy comebacks and her spunky attitude when it came to calling Gabe on his BS. I’m a straight-shooter like her in many ways, so I identified with that side of her. What I didn’t like about her was her tendency to be incredibly naive of the dangerous situations they found themselves in and how gullible she was in certain areas. There were many instances I wanted to gag her. When they’re saved/taken hostage by Mena (this generation’s Hitler, according to Gabe), she was quick to beg Gabe to hear the man out because he claimed to know her brother’s whereabouts. I’m all for saving family, but if the expert says the man is bad news, he’s bad news and not to be trusted. Little to no sense of self-preservation.
Overall, I loved the plot and all the action. It was fast-paced and rarely slowed down except for the sexy times. Another thing I noticed and liked was whenever I questioned something, it got addressed at a later time. This story is told from multiple POVs. We have Gabe, Audrey, Bryson, the bad guys, the FBI negotiator, and the rest of Gabe’s team. I don’t mind that because I feel more connected to the story and the goings on when I’m allowed in their heads. The majority of the dialogues between Gabe and Audrey are pretty funny. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed during a sex scene before, but I couldn’t help it .
“Christ.” Gabe stopped moving to stare at her. “You’re like nitro. One touch and boom.”
She let go of his shoulder, soothing the bite with her tongue before grinning up into his eyes. “Yeah, I’m a two pump chump.”
Ms Burrows sure can write some really hot sex scenes! They get better with each sexual encounter. I definitely thought they had chemistry together, even if Gabe was the one trying to fight the attraction the whole time.
If there was anything I didn’t like, it was one detail. Before you read on, be warned, it’s a minor spoiler.
The ending was a little predictable, but I loved the visual of Audrey’s t-shirts that she made for the team. With that said, I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I hope there will be more of the same action packed suspense, humor and, of course, romance.

Gabriel ‘Stonewall’ Bristow had a starling career as a Navy SEAL until an accident left him unfit for military duty. Sick and tired of his father pushing him into a desk job, Gabe accepts leadership of a private hostage rescue team. His first mission? To rescue Bryson Van Amee, a wealthy businessman who was taken by Colombian rebels. After assembling a team of retired but deadly individuals, they head to Columbia where a simple recon run turns into a disaster and Gabe is forced to kidnap a woman...
Who turns out to be none other than the fiery and sexy Audrey Van Amee. Once Gabe explains the situation, she puts her foot down and demands he let her help with recovering her brother. Audrey knows just the right way to push the otherwise serious and controlled ex-SEAL, because not only does he agree but soon enough the two have a hard time keeping their eyes and hands off each other. Let’s just say Gabe’s “tactical moves” will have you reaching for the nearest fan and setting it on high.
Delicious tension goes on whenever Gabe and Audrey are near and your heart can’t help but start racing in anticipation. Like, will they fight or devour each other? Either choice sounds deliciously good. Audrey is more than a match for the deadly Gabe and he’s strong enough to ground her impulsiveness. But will Gabe let go of his control, long enough to realize what he’s found? Or will he stick to protocol and do what’s right? We’ll, you’ll have to read to find that out!
Tonya Burrow’s debut SEAL of Honor is a scrumptious mix of military action, humor and romance.
As mentioned above, HORNET’s first mission takes them to Columbia and Burrows does an awesome job of keeping the spice and color of the place while still focusing on her very American entourage. Great descriptions everywhere without weighting it all down. Also, I want to shout a big thank you for doing the Spanish lines and dialogue correctly. It irks me so much when authors drop a line in Spanish that isn’t right, as if they just Googled the phrase. So, yes, thank you for using Spanish correctly.
Burrows weaved this story mercilessly. It’s complication after complication for our heroes and the question always is, how she will up the ante? I don’t know how, but she managed to raise the bar every single time with every single chapter. It was just amazing. I’m more than excited to continue this series and find out more about the other HORNET members—Travis ‘Achilles’ Quinn, Jean-Luc ‘Rajin Cajun’ Cavalier, Jesse Warrick the cowboy medic, Marcus Deangelo the smooth surfer, Eric ‘Harvard’ Psysick, and Ian Reinhardt the volatile bad boy. In this first book, there’s more than enough detail about the other boys to leave you begging for more. And I. AM. BEGGING.
I believe that this is my first foray into military romance, or something like it. For the most part, I was entertained, and there was NOT ONE character whom I disliked. HumInt Inc.'s Hostage Rescue and Negotiation Team, or HORNET, has an eclectic mix of skilled men who I believe will each have their stories told. When this book caught my eye I thought it was going to have a similar feel as The A-Team (movie) and I was pretty excited about it. Now that I've finished it, I'm undecided if this romance subgenre is for me.
I know nothing about the way mercenaries or military men work but I have a feeling that this book was pretty well-researched. In fact, that might be where my feelings of indifference come from. There's a lot of technical and strategy talk that didn't interest me that much, so I found myself pausing every now and then. I just wanted to get to the romance! Then again, that's just me. I did enjoy the interaction between the team members. I loved Jean-Luc! And it might be too early to say but apart from Gabe, it's Quinn who's captured my heart.
Now, onto the romance part. As the story progressed I did find their romance to be sweet, albeit cheesy at times. Some of their dialogue just sounded unnatural. However, I thought that they make a great couple. The book provided a lot of steaminess even though the sexy scenes were limited.
Overall, I still found this to be an enjoyable read. There were a lot of funny moments especially Jean-Luc's moments. This is a perfect light read with plenty of likable characters, many of whom I've grown to care about and take interest in. I thought this was a great pilot to a promising series and I can't wait to read about the other men of HORNET!

Yes, I know all about you, Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Bristow, former commanding officer of American Navy SEAL Team Ten, bravo platoon, forced into retirement due to an injury sustained on your way to a training operation last year in Virginia
Yep, life isn’t good for Gabe Bristow right now. After forced into early retirement due to an injury, he’s offered to work as the leader to a hostage rescue team. Audrey watches in horror as her brother gets kidnapped and she does whatever she can do to help in the rescue team’s efforts. Gabe has enough to worry about as he fights off Colombian rebels and he now has to deal with the feisty Audrey Van Amee.
Two words to describe Seal of Honor is ACTION-PACK!
Wow, there’s a lot that goes on! It really did feel like you were experiencing an action movie. Once you think an obstacle is resolved, bam you are thrown into another one! There’s a lot of momentum and a lot of character build up too.
I really liked Gabe, he’s sexy, masculine and even with his messed up leg, it just makes you want him even more. I liked Audrey too, she’s sassy, caring and has a big heart. I thought the banter between Gabe and Audrey was great. It was funny with a slight sexual tension.
I wouldn’t call Seal of Honor too steamy, however, the few steamy moments were not to disappoint! I mean, I don’t know how horny I would be if I was in the jungle without a bath for days, but hey when in Rome!
This is the first book in the Hornet series and Burrows introduces the other characters a drunk Cajun linguist, a boy-genius CIA threat analyst, an FBI negotiator with mob ties, a cowboy medic and an EOD expert as volatile as the bomb he defuses oh my! Can we say swoon factor times ten?! I am excited about the other series and I like how each other person has a different background.
If you are into action pack reads, then Seal of Honor is PERFECT for you.

I completely slept on this book. I don’t normally pick up books like this because I love immortal heroes and sometime I feel like no one could compare but this book has completely changed my perception and I can now claim that I love the human heros just as much as the immortal ones. (just don’t expect me to give up my lust for fangs).
The cover is wickedly hot with a capital H and the merc’s in the book are hotter!!!! Once the book began there was a rush of action. The plot begins to take off; I fell deeply into the story quickly and found that I was dangerously attached to the characters. I loved them all. Gabe was all alpha and some, yes he had his issues but he was born to lead in the bedroom and his quest to help save Aubrey’s brother. But what was interesting to see that Gabe was not the only alpha male in the picture. No worries, because I have enough room in my heart to have them all. Lol, Aubrey was amazing, strong willed, witty, determined and contained the courage that is not normally seen in a heroine. Aubrey was hilarious, she seemed to give Gabe a good challenge from time to time which made it hard to tell whom had control over whom when Gabe and Aubrey both were commandeering the scene. The romance well, the romance was so hot, blazing hot that I lost all train of thought. Hehehe…. know you all know what I mean about that. I completely loved Tina Burrows writing style, the plot was riveting and the characters were dangerously loveable.
My Recommendation
I really, really loved this book and I am rating Seal of Honor 5 out of 5 Purple Rant Hearts and would recommend this book to anyone that loves a contemporary romance with non stop action and wickedly hot Mercenaries.
I had been looking forward to reading this one, so many of my GR friends have loved it, but sadly it didn't work for me. I had a hard time buying into the fact that these guys would so quickly for a merc group and then run off before working together or even doing any sort of paperwork. After 115 pages I am giving up. At this point I don't care if Audrey and Gabe make it out of the jungle, can't really understand their attraction or that they act on things while being kidnapped. The other guys in the group can't really keep me interested either. In the end this one just isn't for me.
